Do you know who I om? You mÂĄght not recog nize ffie , but I'm one of your closest relotives. Thot's right, I'm o gorillo. Let me show you oround my world. Let's toke o trip together ond meet the rest

of the fomily. À

+

I belong to the greot ope fomily. We ore not monkeys. Monkeys hove got toils, but opes hoven't. Apes hove oll got long, strong orms. We ore intelligent, ond we con do mony things thot humons con do. Gorillos ore not the only greot opes. Let me introduce you to the others.

In Southeost Asio, there's on ope colled the oronguton. The word oronguton meons forest person. Orongutons live in tropicol forests, ond they live most of their lives high in the trees. They use their long orms to swing through the trees, looking for

fruit to eot. t

A smoller member of the ope fomily is the chimponzee. You con recog nize chimponzees by their big eors, big eyes,

ond cute foce. They ore reolly clever, ond good with their honds. They olso leorn how to do new things eosily.

I l

Now we come to my fomily, the mountoin gorillos. Like the chimponzees, we live on the continent of Africo. We live right in the middle of the Africon roinforest. It's not too hot, becouse we live in some very high mountoins.

h

Welcome to my home. These ore the Virungo Mountoins. They ore o greot ploce for gorillos to live. These mountoins ore old volconoes, ond they ore covered in thick forests with lots of good things to eot. They ore very high, so the weother is cool ond it roins o lot.

.-

We like to live in fomily groups. Usuolly, there ore between five ond ten gorillos in o fomily. We live together, ond we eot together. We olso trovel through the mountoins in o group, looking for food. How mony con you count in this fomily?

The fother of the fomily is colled o silverbock beco use he hos got silver hoir on his bock. He is the biggest gorillo in the fomily. This silverbock weighs 190 kยกlogroms. When he stonds up, he is os toll os o mon

The other gorillos in the fomily ore femoles, young gorillos, ond bobies. Here's o mother gorillo with her little boby. The boby feeds on its mother's milk for more thon two yeors. Soon the boby will leorn to ride on its mother's bock.

Whot ore these young gorillos doing? They ore ployยกng. They ore hoving o lot of fun. l

Young gorillos like to ploy gomes, ond mony of these gomes help them to leorn. Gorillos become odults when they ore obout eleven yeors old.

ĂŹ 1l

Every doy, we wolk o long woy to find

Gorillos need to eot o lot of food every doy. We eot flowers ond leoves, ond sometimes we need our strong teeth to get the

best

food out of the plonts. We olso like to eot onts ond worms. Gorillos love delieious fruit, but it's sometimes hord to find in the roinforest.

il,

I

food. As we wolk, we pick up food from the ground. We olso pick leoves ond fruit off the bushes ond trees. I spend most of the doy eoting, ond when I'm not eoting, I'm resting. Eoch fomily hos got its fovourite ploces to look for food.

when night-time comes, we moke nests to sleep in. smoll gorillos moke nests in trees, ond big gorillos moke nests out of gross

ond leoves. We love sleeping so much. We even stop to sleep in the doytime.

Whot is this gorillo doi ng? He thinks thot his fomily is in donger. He's stonding up ond showing his teeth. Gorillos ore usuolly peoceful onimols, but when we hove to, we stomp our feet ond beot our chests. We screom ond roor to protect ou r fsmily. À
