location downtown sudbury, on

the design for the mid-rise multi-use timber building complex developed through researching the process in which downtown sudbury was developed and how it evolved over time. the intersections and axis of junction creek and the railway have imposed a divide between the downtown and the surrounding neighbourhoods of sudbury. in order to bridge this divide, the design reinforces the intersections of downtown sudbury to introduce a sense of community for demographics that downtown lacks. geared towards families, renters, and students, the complex includes 2 and 3 bedroom apartments and 3 bedroom lofts as well as programs such as a market, bowling alley, and cafe to stimulate social interactions. implementing pedestrian streets from the extensions of the existing roadways informed the buildings configurations, while creating outdoor activity nodes including an exterior market, central outdoor skating rink or splash pad, and a children’s park.

location downtown sudbury, on

situated on the edge of downtown sudbury, the northern breweries building was built in the early 1900’s and has since become abandoned. based on site analysis and research, the conceptual design of the gallery is to create a community microcosm by celebrating the history of the building, its typology, and implementing moments of discovery and transparency. by separating programmatic requirements into public, semi-public, private spaces there was opportunity to have moments of reveal from one gallery to the next. the temporary gallery located on the ground floor has a reveal to the second-floor experimental gallery. as the visitors head up to the second floor the permanent gallery is exposed. light plays a role in choregraphing the movements of the users between the gallery spaces with changing moments of direct and diffuse light.

through historical site analysis, it was realized that since the development of copper cliff as a mining town, there are been disconnections between communities in the town as well as between copper cliff and the city of sudbury. the driving concept of the copper cliff early learning centre derived itself from this history of disconnections in order to bring a stronger sense of community in the town. the form of the building was manifested through observing of the local community of little italy and how they responded to the landscape by focusing on the voids that the streets create and abstracting them into programmatic clusters, ultimately creating a village within a village. the roof is an abstracted form of the local rock plays with the scale inside the early learning centre. the roof dips for child sized nooks, adding an additional level of comfort. the conceptual design aims to create a comfortable and familiar space for children to grow and play.

the design was inspired by the idea of a cluster of bunkies, where each has their own function while having a connection to nature. the mcguire’s were looking for a design that

year summer 2020 team individual tools rhino, illustrator location south bay, manitoulin island, on 30

minimally impacts their site and the existing trees that protect their site from the strong winter conditions. the bunkies were designed to be off grid summer housing, with a sleeping cabin for the 3 children on the far left, an outhouse and outdoor shower located at the back, a sleeping cabin for the parents in the middle, and an outdoor kitchen to the right. they wanted to emphasize outdoor living with the bunkies, having a central place that connects the cabins visually to eachother while framing interior views of the lake.

the objective of the ice station was to design a space that provided skaters with a sense of shelter and warmth on the ramsey lake skating path. as a studio group we investigated a form that mimics the movement of the marks skates leave on the ice. to achieve this form, two walls follow the smooth curves that skates

when approaching the assignment ofcreating an inhabitable object located at sudbury’s farmers market, the team looked at the meaning around eating locally and the culture that surrounds markets. with the avid discussions about the climate crisis broadening, the push for eating locally has increased but the use of singleuse plastics is still evident in the marketplace. ultimately,
