The Research Center The Arabic Language Institute King Saud University Introduction he role of universities and well-established scientific institutions is not confined to education. Their role extends to cover other important objectives, such as activating scientific interaction and stimulating mental activities, which eventually result in the advancement of societies. The Arabic Language Institute at King Saud University is a good example of such institutions. It offers different consultative and scientific services that participate in the advancement of the Saudi society.

T

The Research Center at the Arabic Language Institute (RCALI) is one link in the chain of the Deanship of Scientific Research at KSU. Its general mission is to serve scientific research via collaborating with researchers and experts in the fields of language and language teaching. This mission is a continuation of a long tradition at KSU, more than fifty years, of assisting research and researchers. This long tradition always stimulates the Unit to activate its role in offering consultative and scientific services in order to build the nation and the human civilization. This site intends to acquaint the reader with RCALI at King Saud University (KSU) and the services it offers in publishing scientific research in different fields such as, linguistics, teaching foreign languages and other educational domains. Its publishing service is governed by the scientific publication guidelines of KSU and is open to all male and female researchers from KSU and from other institutions as well. Khalid A. Addamigh, PhD Director

Historical Background The sublime decree number (18935) issued on 25/6/1394H comprised, in its second clause, the main mission of RCALI. To accomplish that mission, a number of experts in Applied Linguistics have supervised the Center since its founding, about 33 years ago. The resolution of the Council of Higher Education number 2/10/1419H issued on 6/2/1419H stated that all research centers at the Saudi universities seek to accomplish the general objective regulated by the “unified bylaw of scientific research at Saudi universities” which has been approved by the Custodian of the Two Holly Mosques by the royal decree number 7/B/4403 on 2/4/1419H.

Objectives The Center offers its consultative and scientific services to all researchers from KSU and from other institutions who are interested in the fields of language and education. The objectives of the RCALI can be summarized in:  participating in accomplishing the general mission of the Arabic Language Institute in serving the nation  encouraging scientific research via assisting members of staff and other researchers  offering consultative services in related fields  encouraging research projects from institutions other than KSU  refereeing and publishing books, research papers and other research projects  carrying out research projects inside and outside KSU RCALI, also, holds a collection of books, periodicals and articles related to linguistics, teaching foreign languages and education in its internal library. Interested members of staff, students and other researchers can benefit from this collection by visiting the internal library.

RCALI Services The services offered by the RCALI vary depending on the interests and needs of the researchers. Nevertheless, they can be divided into three categories: 1. Offering Consultation One of the important functions that the center offers is the consultative service for the scientific issues related to language education. To accomplish that mission, the center depends on some of language experts in the institute itself and sometimes from other institutes inside the University or outside according to the regulating system. 2. Carrying out Research Carrying out research in different areas related to language education is one of the fundamental duties of the Center. These research projects can be from within the Center itself, from other departments at KSU, and from institutes outside KSU or even outside KSA in accordance with the regulating system. 3. Publication The center supervises publication of scientific research. A researcher can apply to publish his/her research project before or after conducting it. If the application is successful, the Center sends the research to be refereed and then publishes it within certain publication series.

Publication Criteria and Instructions at RCALI All research papers published by RCALI are refereed in accordance with the regulating system of KSU. The Center accepts research projects according to the following criteria: 1. The research project should be in line with the regulating system and policies at KSU. 2. The subject of the research should be related to linguistics, teaching foreign languages or education in general. 3. The research should follow the principles of scientific research. 4. Within the text, references are pointed to by using the family name of the author, the year of publication and the page number in parentheses and separated by a comma. References are to be listed at the end of the reseach paper in alphabetical order according to family (last) name of the first author followed by the rest of the information in accordance with the APA system. 5. Authors should submit an original hard copy of the research paper together with three other hard copies and one softcopy in either a Microsoft Word format (.doc), or a Portable Document Format (.pdf).

6. Authors should submit a short abstract written in English and another one in Arabic of up to 200 words each (+/- 10%). Each should include: The title Author/s and the institutions they belong to The objectives, population, methodology and scope of the paper as well as the results achieved.

Summary RCALI operates under the umbrella of the Deanship of Scientific Research at KSU. It seeks to assist researchers in different fields related to language and linguistics. The overall aim is to participate in building up the nation and the human civilization. Finally, the Center invites all researchers to benefit from its services.
