COMPETITION ENTRY science museum and exhibition hall I participated on the team for this project, a 22,000 m² science museum and exhibition hall in Fujian, China, in June, 2010, with Michael Maltzan Architecture. This project was a proposal for a competition that the office had entered in partnership with a firm in China. The proposed site for the science museum, in Fujian, China, lies near the border with Taiwan, in an area that is undergoing intense development encouraged by the Chinese government. The science museum would be just one of a number of large, institutional buildings recently completed or currently in construction in the immediate area. The formal concept of the building was three roughly triangular program blocks arranged to form a larger triangu-
lar building, with the gaps between the three blocks forming a large, spectacular lobby/atrium space in the center of the building. A translucent glass skin, broken up by an irregular grid of mullions created an alluring, textured skin. A team of 5 developed this project. I helped to design the skin pattern with 1 other team member. I also helped to develop the building entry, as well as the system of circulation bridges connecting the three major blocks of program on all 5 levels of the building. I incorporated the different elements of the design developed by all members of the team into one digital model, making adjustments where necessary, and created renderings of the overall building as well as several specific views of the interior spaces.

COMPETITION ENTRY world expo pavilion I worked with a small team on this project, a 6500 m² thematic pavilion and exhibition hall, in September, 2009, with Zago Architecture. The pavilion competition was in anticipation of the 2012 World Expo in Yeosu, South Korea. Yeosu is a peninsular city on the southern coast of Korea. The coastline wrapping around 2/3 of the city’s perimeter inspired the expo’s theme: the Ocean. The competition brief called for a thematic pavilion to establish Yeosu as a “blue city” and highlight best practices for ocean stewardship. At the time, the studio was exploring a unique interest in the accident as a means of generating form. We decided to combine this interest with the ocean-themed requirements of the brief. a major problem for today’s oceans, and that artificial reefs are an effective, if expensive solution to this problem, we proposed a building that was orchestrated as a years-long, slow-motion “accident” that slowly collapsed into the sea. Once fully submerged, the pavilion would become an artificial reef, helping to rehabilitate Yeosu’s harbor by providing habitat for sea creatures. During the long decay, the pavilion would constantly change its shape, collapsing in an unpredictable process producing unique and significant formal qualities. An underwater glass bridge would be constructed after submersion that would allow visitors an intimate view of the sea life in the reef as well as a glimpse of the final accident-generated architectural form.

institutional building addition I participated on the team for this project, a 12,000 sf brain imaging and research center on a major university campus, at Michael Maltzan Architecture in the spring of 2010. There were several significant challenges that presented themselves during the design process. The first and most obvious challenge was the site itself. Conceived as a relatively small addition to an existing cluster of buildings, the brain center had to be designed to keep a precarious balance between the old and the new. As designers, we were interested in proposing a progressive architectural scheme. However we also recognized the importance of maintaining an appropriate relationship to the existing site, which had
been built in the 1970’s in a nondescript corporate style. The second major challenge we faced was in negotiating the competing desires of a heterogeneous client group. The direct client, a prominent neuroscientist, supported our efforts to propose an innovative, progressive design. However, the university required that we adhere to the campus master plan, which severely limited our design palette and significantly reduced the area of the site we had to manipulate. The competition between these varied client interests required from us a swift and open design process, in which we worked through potential ideas and schemes very rapidly, justifying each scheme with strong argumentation.

Massing and program studies eventually convinced both us and the clients that the most appropriate and efficient scheme would occupy two levels in the courtyard created by the existing cluster of buildings. We designed a multitude of schemes to present to the clients, creating sketch drawing sets and building 1/4� models of each scheme to fit into a large site model. My role on the team was as intern. I built all the models, working quickly with museum board and foam core. I did several of the drawings and diagrams and some scheme renderings, and assisted with the design. I also helped the team formulate and document the architectural and programmatic arguments used to present to the clients.
My work constituted a significant part of the materials presented to the clients at meetings. This work required a great deal of patience and flexibility, as designs would often change and require new documentation as late as the night before scheduled presentations. Client disagreements prevented the project from progressing past the concept design phase during the period of my internship. However, some of the schemes we created for this phase were still quite complex, with complicated massings, as well as glazing and circulation systems. These pages represent just a small sample of the drawings, diagrams and models I produced while working on this project.

SCHEMATIC DESIGN commercial and residential project I worked on this project, a 60,000 sf commercial and residential building between October, 2009, and February, 2010 at Zago Architecture. The project was located in Detroit, Michigan, adjacent to the still new Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD), and was intended to be part of a general renewal of the Midtown Detroit neighborhood. The building was conceived as a CMU masonry building, with 16 commercial units on the bottom 2 floors and 32 residential units of varying sizes on the upper 3 levels. The building was also expected to provide some storage and administrative space for MOCAD. The project’s situation in the economically devastated city of Detroit meant that sticking to the modest budget was
an important concern to all. The building is therefore somewhat sober in form. The art of the design lies in the complexity of the plans and the care given to details. The plans combine duplex units accessed from different levels to form an interlocking, zipper-like pattern in section. The plans are orchestrated to provide each type of unit with unique amenities, such as balconies, roof decks and extremely generous square footage. As a junior designer, I was responsible for generating the bulk of the schematic design drawing set, as well as building process models and design assistance. I also created diagrams and renderings presented to the Detroit Historic Preservation Society for project approval.

SCHEMATIC DESIGN residential addition and renovation I worked on this project, a residential addition and renovation, in 2006 with Adam Wheeler Design. The clients owned a modest ranch house in the Cheviot Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles. They wanted to add a second storey to the house to create more space for their growing family. The upstairs addition was conceived as a discrete children’s area of the house. The program called for two children’s bedrooms, a play area, and a guest/nanny’s suite on the second floor. The ground level was to be transformed into a more serene “adult space,” with the master bedroom, office, kitchen and entertaining areas. The project scope also included a significant kitchen remodel.
We studied different massing and shaping schemes, searching for a solution for the second floor addition that would meet the programmatic needs of our clients without overwhelming the existing house. We also looked for ways to transform both the existing house and addition to unify the two parts and create one coherent building. As junior architectural designer, my responsibilities for this project included generating a set of as-built drawings, contributing to multiple design schemes, and building models. With guidance and supervision, I also generated and coordinated the schematic design drawing set for this project.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT commercial building components I worked on this project during the fall of 2013, with StudioTBD. This historic (1891) building on Colfax Street in downtown Denver was undergoing a major renovation to accommodate a new bar/café that on the ground and belowgrade floors. The scope of studioTBD’s contribution to this renovation was the design of several building components, including interior and exterior guardrails and a “light-band” element that was intended to serve as a unique identity marker as well as a way-finding element at the street level. As job captain for this project, I was solely responsible for the design and detailing of these pieces, which I did with some supervision from the studio principle. The budget for the light-band piece was very limited,
so conservation of materials and labor were both important considerations during the design process. The light-band was designed as a series of 4’ long bent sheet metal panels with integral concealed LEDs spilling light downwards onto the surfaces of the panels. The angled planes would reflect the light in a slightly different direction, creating an interesting effect of light and shadow. The panels were sized carefully for easy and efficient fabrication from standard 4’ x 8’ stock materials. A metal brake would be used to form the required bends. A custom perforation pattern developed for laser cutting into the metal was an optional addition to the design, should the budget permit.

Metal guardrails were required at the exterior at 3 lightwells set into the sidewalk against the front facade of the building as well as interior railings at the stairway between the ground and sub-grade floors of the bar. Both sets of railings were designed as assemblies of readily-available stock metal profiles. The exterior railings were designed as an updated riff on the existing, although somewhat deteriorated iron picket guardrails. 1/2” pickets are supported by structural tube steel horizontal supports that stop short of forming a perimeter frame, only lightly touch the WT post at the center of the span. The interior railing design was driven by a tactile discovery made on a visit to the metal fabrication shop, when a sample piece of woven wire mesh produced an interesting, oblique effect when skewed by hand. Panels of woven wire mesh, skewed accordingly, were secured in frames assembled from stock steel bars and angles. These framed panels are supported at intervals by WT posts. The perimeters of the frames surrounding the panels are unfinished, exposing the edges of the wire mesh, “revealing” the assembly.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT residential addition with photovoltaics I worked on this project, a small residential addition, in 2006 with Adam Wheeler Design. The clients, who owned a modest mid-century modern home in Long Beach, CA, wanted to build a small solarium adjacent to the master bedroom at the back of the house. The solarium was intended as a peaceful space for relaxation and reading. The project design was thus inspired by traditional the Japanese tea house, as a quiet space for meditation and contemplation. The clients had an interest in sustainable design, and we agreed to design the solarium roof as a site for photovoltaic panels to provide teh house with solar energy. We selected integrated photovoltaic roof shingles and subsequently angled the roof of the solarium to optimize sun exposure.
The angle of the roof was also carefully designed to minimize the impact of teh connection to the existing roof eave. As a junior designer on the project, I took a lead role in researching and creating an economic and environmental argument for the photovoltaics. I gathered information about the household’s typical energy usage, the production capacity of the photovoltaic shingles and the roof area necessary for the appropriate number of cells. I also researched the cost of installation, as well as the tax incentives provided by local, state and federal government to encourage solar energy. I also contributed significantly to the design, and, with supervision, generated and coordinated multiple drawing sets for the project.

CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTS residential renovation I worked on this project, a residential renovation, in 2006 with Adam Wheeler Design. The house, located in Huntington Beach, CA, was spacious, but felt cramped because of excessive partitions in the kitchen, living room and dining room. The clients liked to entertain, and wanted to use their house to exhibit revolving artwork exhibits, and to throw gallery opening-style parties. They wanted to open up the entry, create an open floor plan, and create a wood deck in the front of the house that could be accessed from the living room and would be a seamless addition to their entertaining area. The centerpiece of the renovation was a custom-designed fireplace and hearth that would sit at the center of the
kitchen, living room and dining room area, providing subtle spatial definition for those three areas. The project also included a significant kitchen remodel. As junior designer, I generated the as-built drawings and assisted with design through all phases of the project, from pre-schematic to construction documents. With supervision, I prepared and coordinated all the drawing sets and incorporated details and notes from the structural engineer into our drawing sets. I also found and established communication with the custom fireplace contractor and helped coordinate communication between the general contractor and the fireplace contractor. Construction on this project was completed in October, 2006.

CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTS historic facade restoration I worked on this major historic facade restoration of the Williamsburg Savings Bank Tower - a 37 story major historical landmark in Brooklyn, NY - during the summer and fall of 2012 at Lawless & Mangione Architects and Engineers. Built in 1929 and recently converted to condominiums, the solid masonry Tower suffered from significant facade deterioration, and water chronically leaking into dozens of interior units. My firm was hired to perform a complete survey of the building facade as well as an investigation of the leaks in order to determine the cause of the infiltration and make recommendations to to restore the building to a water-tight state. We produced the construction documents and administered the construction contract.
I was involved in this project from the earliest stages, and worked directly with firm principals on the building survey and leak investigations, including multiple water tests (including some from suspended swing scaffold), facade probes and interior and exterior observations. I assisted firm principals in determining the required scope of work and, with their supervision, designed required details and produced the construction documents for the project. I also prepared all documents for submissio to the City of New York’s Landmarks Preservation Committee. The project was complicated by the building’s numerous terrace setbacks, height and exposure, as well as the unusual thickness of the solid masonry walls.

building envelope & bulkhead restoration I worked on this project - a building envelope and bulkhead restoration project of a postwar cavity wall residential co-op on the Upper East Side of Manhattan - during the spring and summer of 2013 at Lawless & Mangione Architects and Engineers. The firm was initially hired to perform a thorough exterior conditions survey of the building and report our findings to the co-op board of directors. The building survey, for which I was responsible, showed some minor deterioration of the building facade, but major deterioration, and potentially dangerous structural damage, was discovered at the bulkhead on the main roof. Severe cracks (larger than 1/4”) and other signs of damage had formed in several of the masonry piers
and concrete members forming the enclosure surrounding the building’s water tank. With supervision, I determined the recommended scope of work, which included complete demolition and reconstruction of a significant portion of the upper bulkhead, as well as structural concrete repairs. I developed details for the required repairs and produced the construction documents for the project, including working with the Structural Engineering department to incorporate structural concrete repair details into the drawing set. I was also responsible for bidding this project and helped the clients’ evaluate the bids to select a contractor.
