Design Build - Option Studio

Process Work

This project was done during the Spring semester of my senior year, and was undoubtedly one of the best experiences. Every spring, students are given an option to explore areas outside of their major and work with other disciplines in the Design College. This particular studio, Design Build, was the first “hands on experience I had with design and major construction. Our site was chosen by the instructor, Bruce Bassler, and was located just down the street from Campus at the Baseball/Rugby fields. The site was empty, and recreation services needed a pavilion for seating, hydration, and to give the space a sense of gathering or community outside the fields. Our team of 22 designed, fabricated, ordered, and built everything from the ground up - and all within the 16 weeks of the semester. I worked specically on the bench, having had some experience in dealing with dimensions of furniture. It was a very difficult but enjoyable project, through which I learned a lot about construction, complications with drawings, and how to work as a team to be most efficient.

OFFICE DESIGN: STEELCASE

This was a project sponsored by Steelcase, a solo competition between hundreds of applicants at several schools across the country.. Steelcase provided the floor plan along with several guidelines for the space, needs of the client, and details about the company. The office site was a suite in Austin, TX that was soon to be home to a company called NEXT that aims to help entrepreneurs start their businesses and create new ideas and opportunities within our economy. Because of this model of growth and production, i chose to follow a concept for the office that involved functions of the human body. In the body, each time new connections are made through nerve synapses connecting in the brain, a new idea is conceived. These connections can be related to the interpersonal connections between employees and entrepreneurs within NEXT. Each time a team of two or more meet, a new idea is created... making these communication opportunities vital to the success of the company. The spatial planning reflects this concept in adjancency of spaces, each “owned space is directly across from a group project zone or enclave. This facilitates communication within employees either in larger groups or in 1-on-1 collaboration. all large public spaces are evenly dispersed throuhout the office, as are the private offices or personal workstations.

ASSISTED LIVING & MEMORY CARE

Vistas of Panama Assisted Living & Memory Care Facility Panama Pacifico, Panama

This project was the first introduction to healthcare design in our program. Set in the panama pacifico development that was once an Old US Airforce base, our site was close to several neighborhoods and newly developing amenities. We were required to create a facility from the inside out that would be suitable for at least 15 assisted living units and 7 memory care suites. We started by designing a layout for the apartments, and then created the building by fitting them together. The center includes several amenities including a dining center, Cafe Sol, salon, gym, laundry, convenience store, and more. The motivation behind our project was to integrate the building with the beauty of the natural environment around it by incorporating daylighting and natural cooling techniques. We also used several paint colors as bold wayfinding devices, allowing residents with detiorating conditions to still have independence in transportation and direction.

RETAIL DESIGN : ROME SEMESTER **Concept Statement: The concept for our store was to mimic the qualities of a honeycomb. The idea behind using the honeycomb was to create individual, intimate spaces within our given space. Like the Honeycomb, the boundaries are transluscent, Allowing one to see through the dividers into the “cells beyond. This will give our customers an idea of how the furniture collections would relate to one another in their own homes as they see them interacting in the store.

This particular project was a Semester-long project focusing on Retail Design, and was also completed during the four months I spent in rome. Set up as a project to introduce the idea of international communication, I was assigned two partners back at Iowa State. They were to research the brand, Restoration Hardware, who was to open a flagship store in Rome. We worked with the proposed site, seen to the right.

Our site in Rome, within the city center walls. Currently home to the ducati cafe. Near the ancient ruins of the old senate building, the store opens up on a busy piazza.

LUXURY RESIDENCE

The objective of this project was to introduce high-end residential design, and the furniture, fabrics and aesthetic that this particular field encompasses. Building on a site in a gated community in Wayzata, MN, we were to optimize the views and take advantage of the rich natural surroundings. The client given to us was described in great detail, and we were to include all of the personal expectations of the couple within this two story luxury home. The budget was $5 million, and every interior design decision was left to us. My partner and I chose to emulate the Rococo design period within our space, in accordance with our client’s requests and incorporated motifs from this movement in the style

ARTWORK TO INTERIOR

Given the painting “Whirl” by Kenneth Noland, the project objective was to create an interior space based on the emotions and shapes found in our analysis of the piece. Evolving basic 2D shapes into an idealistic sculpture, we then chose an existing room on campus in which we were to implement our design. This model was created using the “shell” of the Pride Lounge in the Memorial Union at Iowa State, chosen because of the floor to ceiling windows and natural light through the north facing side. The redesign concept was ours to select, as long as it was cohesive with the existing surroundings. This space is designed to be a secondary library reading room where students can check

TOOL In this project, we were assigned a tool to replicate using only strathmore and string. There were many techniques used in the construction of the paper tool, the bowl of the ladle was stitched while the handle was woven, also adding to its strength. A tool “pattern was another requirement of the project, teaching us how to reconstruct 3D objects by breaking them down into 2D components that could be used to recreate the tool easily.

SPACE CONTAINER Out of the tool pattern pieces, we were given the task of creating a somewhat abstract object that displayed a new characteristic of the shape(s) looking nothing like what it was used for within the tool. The idea was to contain space, and using repetition and uniformity, this container came to life by wrapping the ladle piece around itself.

Through my studies at Iowa State University, I have worked to develop my skills as an Interior Designer, both artistic and technical. I enjoy being creative with my work, and am also interested in several Different aspects of the Interior Design profession. I am passionate about getting to know people; how they live, think, and interact with each other. Improving the quality of life for those in adverse situations is a driving force behind my desire to design, and design well. Each semester, we have worked to develop an exposure to many types of designing interiors. The projects within this portfolio are all personal designs, some created in a group of students, and others individually.
