I firmly believe that the greatest outcomes in architecture can be obtained in a multidisciplinary environment, in which the designer draws inspiration, information, knowledge and experience by a collective and actively shared source. That is the main reason I am motivated to apply for the MSc programme, as its core values support the multidisciplinary approach of training. Studying at TU Delft has been a major aspiration of mine since the beginning of my academic years as a student, as the University holds a great reputation amongst both students and in the professional world. The specialization I find most captivating is Architecture. Actually, I consider architecture as a very powerful and influential tool – not necessarily to directly change the socio-economic landscape, but to facilitate the impact society longs for. Treading on uncharted paths is something seemingly uncomfortable, but in my conviction, the willingness to step into the unfamiliar can only produce constructive results – after all, experiments lead to new discoveries. In my final thesis at TU Delft I would probably engage in one of the following themes. Firstly, since crises around the world have yet to be resolved and steps towards their complex solutions are taken at a slow pace, humanitarian architecture is still very relevant. Moreover, as the environmental distress caused in the planet is almost irreversible, exploring new design concepts for floating structures to not divert water, but to integrate it in the process seem very appealing to me. Lastly, I am intrigued by the idea of exploring materiality and new ways to reuse waste collected in landfills. Researching new methods of taking advantage of something seemingly useless and uncovering its potential, fascinate me. My interest in the social and humanitarian aspect of architecture peaked in my final student years and led me to the development of my final thesis entitled “Floating Canopies: a Humanitarian Approach in lake Volta, Ghana”. Throughout the design process I realized how much I was fascinated by the idea of creating something out of near-to-nothing, employing sustainability and low cost strategies as well as being in a constant dialogue with the local landscape. In my conviction, architecture is where the union of society, realism, poetics and aesthetics takes spatial form. I consider that the programme offered at TU Delft corresponds fully to my ideals, interests and objectives and studying in a University of this caliber would provide me with the necessary foundations to realize my true potentials to the fullest capacity.

The subject of the studio was the international competition for the new Axel Springer Media Campus in Berlin, that took place in 2014. The project tried to answer the following questions: How can a building become responsive, porous and penetrated by the public? How can the obsolete design formats for the standard working environment be left behind? What are the spatial relations necessary for this new formula to work? The concept was simple: a distinct division of users: the employees and the public. That juxtaposition translates to the fluid “feminine” form living in the heart of the building intended for public use and activities, and the clean structure of the rest of the office building, intended for the employees. The critical areas are those in which the public and the staff meet: the fluid form comes in touch with the office building and in there, important programmatic scenarios that mix the users together take place. In nature, often within a body can live another living organism. For that reason, the project was named “Parasight”.

This academic project asked for an intervention on the façade of a vacant building husk, located on Tsimiski Street in Thessaloniki’s central zone. During the studio facades from various architectural case studies were examined, and through that process students created parametric mechanisms to fabricate new facades to be applied on the building husk of Tsimiski Street. The location holds great significance for the area, as Tsimiski Street is one of the most heavily visited streets in the city and is a major shopping district during the day, as well as an nighttime recreational destination. The project proposes a new fragmented facade that takes advantage of the site’s location and features and creates an “embossed” texture that produces a 3d light effect on an otherwise flat and uninteresting total of façades on the surrounding building blocks. The main objective was to create a mechanism that fabricates the shadows within the building itself - the inner imprint of the façade. To improve on the light entering the building – to augment it. For that reason it is named “The Fr/augment” f r / a u g m e n t [fragment + augment ] fragment: shard, piece, chip augment: amplify, improve, heighten

PROJECT RECOGNITION @ VIA EGNATIA: DESIGN SYNERGIES IN THE URBAN CONTEXT [exhibition at conference]
B Y T H E S T U D I O ’ S F A C U LT Y
This academic project takes place in the area of the most historical and important axis of Thessaloniki, the “Egnatia Street”. The objective was to locate the defficiencies of the area as well as to realize the true potential of the abundant inactive and unexploited elements of the local urban reality. Utilizing those inactive elements, new pockets of public space are created in the third dimension - having a massive impact on the urban life of the area without making immence alterations on the urban landscape. It proposes a new route on the ground level passing through arcades and penetrating the urban blocks, the conversion of blind side façades into vertical gardens and vertical activity spaces [graffiti walls, climbing walls and more], as well as a new network of routes and public event areas on an upper level with the creation of air bridges, connecting the inactive terraces of the area’s buildings with the same height. It is all about utilizing the inactive.

THE LIQUID BRIDGE: the new slussen
subject in diploma:
09EX13: Specializations, Insights, Experimentations: Interfaces: The Constitution of Transition type: academic, bridge design collaborators: 3 member group project role: designer, researcher, group director, model maker contribution: concept, diagrams , drawings [all sections], axonometric/render location: Stockholm, Sweden semester: 9th semester / 5th year year of completion: February 2016 supervisors: Ioannidis Konstantinos - kioannidis@arch.auth.gr
The project takes place in the area of Slussen in Stockholm, where there is an urgent need to replace the water and transport infrastructure as well as to create a new pedestrian and bicyclist bridge. The main goal was to solve, with its own geometry the problem of transition as well as to offer a variety of experiences and sensory stimuli with the scuptural qualities of the bridge. The bridge creates a diversity of spatial ambience to the user: from a dramatic tunnel reminiscent route, to an open air observatory overlooking the area, offering a unique panorama of the city. The fluid form of the bridge with its hollow spaces provides a number of activities, such as a permanent exhibition of contemporary art supported by the City Museum that resides in the area, a loft right above the exhibition with free wifi spots and a seating area, a cafĂŠ below the peak of the observatory and an open air plaza.
It is all about combining the practical purpose of a bridge with a range of spatial poetics.

The main material used is timber - a familiar texture with a long tradition for the architectural vocabulary and culture of Sweden. The bridge is contoured vertically, with some of its contours being glass – allowing natural light into the tunnel. The glass contours multiply towards both ends, giving the impression of the bridge floating midair. The entire structure is supported on multiple slender pillars, suggesting the bridge is an art piece that is exhibited on and framed by an aquatic backdrop.

The subject of this thesis was a floating modular system that can accommodate a number of functions and is applied in areas that are affected by a humanitarian crisis - in this case at lake Volta, in Ghana. One of the objectives was to create a network of clusters along the lake’s coastline, that can host various programmatic scenarios to support the communities living in proximity to the areas. Additionally an important directional design axis was to create “mobile” floating architecture that can be detached and moved to other locations in case of an emergency.
1.
The project’s focal points were the resiliency and flexibility, the attention to the local materiality and the vernacular architectural vocabulary, the community participation, the social impact and the long term regional development. It is all about combining the vernacular with the contemporary.

Lake Volta was chosen as it has a significant population living in close proximity. It is the largest artificial water reservoir in the world in terms of surface area (~7.8km2) and was created with the construction of the Akosombo dam in 1965. Ghana is located above the Equator and has a tropical climate. The coastal area of the lake was mapped out and the main points of interest such as towns, small villages and small settlements were located. Subsequently, according to the project’s strategic plan, 40 hubs / network knots / ports were stationed, that would include one or all of the proposed function so that a cluster of uses would be created. These clusters are in service of the population living approximatly up to 40km from them, so that the maximum number of people can reach them. A new network of safe and monitored aquatic roads is formed on waters that are already easily navigable and utilized for fishing, transportation and tourism, adding to the diverse usage of the lake.
