This project tries to reveal what has existed from the past but covered by modern infrastructure through a new way. It is the operation of metaphorical system and code transformation. Urban environment contains any fragments in the surrounding , people’s memory , and atmosphere floating in the air .

1, Fragmentary Urban Condition
In realistic life, time in urban is continuous. However, memory and perception is formed of countless fragments. In daily life, environment is originally seen as background. If we consider some things to be separated, the other will be whiteness. Street light, bustling of cars, red wooden door mar be the scenery to home of some people.

2,Concealment Of Environment City is developed so rapidly that a lot of elements of the past are covered by modernization. Human behaviour and activity also has been hidden for long time by concrete and skyscrapers.

Tea Factory as the site It used to produce tea for over 100 years but closed a few years ago. It was a hollow shell, a forgettable area, a covered history in the city. I try to redefine it as a tea place where we can place our own
memory and share it with people. As time releases from the tea, people’s memory is intervened again.

New Tea Place Mark of elements Not every but some of that on objects play an important role as making condition of objects change. Some objects show the appearance of fragments in architecture systems. The dotted area is mark of water. It shows flat platform. Gray area is arcade of buildings. Black slashed area is shadow of passing place.
I try to redefine it as a tea place where we can place our own memory and share it with people. As time releases from the tea, people’s memory is intervened again.

3, Nuance On Objects 1F & 2F Overlapping Plan & View Angle Electrical machine on the wall, tubes under roofs, or dust and fell leaves on the windowsill like a hint or a clue let people have a chance to know strangers’ life in the architecture. This is nuance, changing the condition on objects.
view angle 1. :When the sun prevail :When a cloud passes by :The originally transparent glass becomes much more reflective. The opening far away is printed mottled texture of the wall. Shadow of people overlaps on trace of time. :The glass chair appears.

:When it is the sun shower on the way to home , suddenly facing this empty stage , we stand at veranda and wait for the rain left. :During the no man performance, it highlights the presence of the door. We are even aware of the existence of home.

4, Metaphor In Reality
Through making fragmentary objects be independent of urban background, these objects will not only have characteristic of material because of human behaviour or social activity in the past. Meaning or symbol has been existed in objects, which are composed to be a surreal environmental network waiting people to discover that.

view angle 6. :Cloud_Tea Room As the sunshine passes through the cloud, shadows see themselves, and people disappear.
view angle 5. :Meditation space Close the door, then it is too silent to hear anything but your own breathe. The cloud in the sky passing through the one-meter-width space, we find a piece of sky between existing roof and new roof. At the moment, the cloud only belongs to us.

5, Metaphor In Text
In the world of poetry, it selects fragments of text and combines with whiteness. When people are reading, they experience symbol and perception beyond what they can feel in the realistic world through the unfamiliar language system on the base of familiar logic.

And from then on I bathed in the Poem / Of the Sea, infused with stars and lactescent, / Devouring the azure verses“azure” in Rimbaud’s The Drunken Boat symbolizes eternity, which is the color of the ocean mixed with the sun.
The wall along Jia-dong stream metaphor the mirror. Mirror covers something but reflects reality.When the rain falls, the wall, as the container of stream water, symbolizes Jia-dong stream with time overlapping.

Strong sunlight, cloud, rain, fog, floods, sunset, wind ,influence of people ,etc. - these immaterial factors intervene space change the condition of objects. These ’outsiders’ make fragments be the space which is a dynamical network. The identity ,area , atmosphere of space also change at the same time.
In between daily and non-daily situation of the space is continuously re-defined by non-material things (like sunlight, rain, sounds, smells,etc.) and urban elements.

Metaphorical Operation
With occasional events , elements condense to be the poem. These fragment of scene, through association of symbolizing, the perception what people feel and consider in the poem casts on people again.

7, Independent Spatial Elements Formed To Be Code
Making object to be independent of architecture system, doors are no longer the addition of walls. Elements, as the code, when environmental situation changes, signify of code will transform.
Some objects, which are hint of activities in the building or the way people live, are selected. For example , the project keeps the patio at its original place , but some part of objects beside it too crowded or broken are removed and intervene new object. This patio is independent of these elements and its identity can be changed with the time. When it is sunny, the patio means skylight ; when it rains , the patio becomes water wall, which make the space becomes a stage, a theatre at once.

Nuance Effect
That is, the new way to decide an architecture is through objects and its ‘meaning’ or ‘metaphor’ in the environment which we never consider in the reality . Any object is independent of the others.
A window, a door , or a wall can not be just for function or module , but make it be a code or a mark to discover what we’ve never seen or forgot. These redefine people’s perception to the space with perceiving condition changing on elements which are fragments of city, architecture, and object.

8, New urban public area
The continuously changing_ reality built of real and unreal Change of time leaving on things, our consciousness catches fleeting glimpse. With overlap ping and transforming of perception, people try to look for the reality hidden behind the daily life.

The project was aimed to produce organic systems In contemporary architecture. It was an experimental design which I transformed concept from material of snow to make a balanced e n v i ro n m e n t w i t h re s i dents & tourists in Jiufen .

Snowanbulism = Snow + Somnambulist = wandering in the space coexisting noisy and quietness The nature I observe was snow. It can stay on any shape in the world.

The Ambience If you stay in soft snow, whisper gradually disappears. If You stay in hard snow, foot steps echo. Decrescendo of sound, Gradient shadow is flickering.

Design Site
Houses are built along the mountain. When it’s foggy,there are layers of height. So is the light. There are various types of density in different layer. It is so much noise in the site; it is crowded, but bustling. The programmes of residence & business are put together. So people always disturb each other, and they don’t have enough open space to relax.

Acoustic Place
I analyse these four kind of snow , and found four kinds of element that form the different snow. Transforming these four kinds of element to different medium of interface, I recompose these interfaces to respond the quality of element in snow .
After that , I create different composition of interface that can affect the sound and make it form acoustic effect of absorbed or reflected sound.

To make noise & quietness balanced . To gather people. To be memory & regeneration.
To make a balance between dwelling & tourists , I create a theatre & community centre for them . It is like condition in layers of glacier , surface of that is soft , and the under was hard.
I use the feature of material to place the program and to let people sense they were in the snow because of the change of the sounds.

Like the environment in snow, the theatres , using solid material, are in the inner part, having loud sound , being echoed and close; surrounded by communication space, using perforated panel, like cafe. . The outer part of the open space is quiet gallery; the interface of that is transparent.

I tried to consider my design with theory of synergy , producing a conceptual prototype , changing parts of prototypes and then composed all of them. I used these prototypes to be an airport where people could sense the direction through the space in.

Original Idea
‘‘What Is The First Chapter Of Travel ?’’ In the initial part, the function of an airport was studied by me and the other student. After we asked the question as an inspiration of design, we started our individual work.
Foreseeing the possible activity as first chapter of travel. I consider the theory of transparency to be a way of creating interface.

Essence of airport : The medium of current condition before fast changing. Some traditional airports are just designed for transportation . I consider airport as the first chapter of trip.
Unlike linear space of traditional airport , I think new LCC can break up the limitation. People can go where they want to go by intimation of space .

Perception The composition of different percentages of perforation as well as the shape and curve structure enable the light produce multiple sorts of atmosphere. Unconsciously , people a r r i v e a t t h e b o a rd i n g gate.

My concept is to change p e rc e p t i o n o f p e o p l e , which can be changed by design . If the sense of sight and consciousness is connected with symbol of possible activities , people may know where they want to go or where they are going to reach.
