ccording to a recent article in spanish newspaper ABC titled “Perú, cuna del punk” or “Peru, cradle of Punk” the author explains the unusual and untold story of the possible true origins of this musical genre. Personally, I don’t think the sex pistols were ever influenced by this band or had Los Saicos in mind when they chose to rebel against everything and produce the trademark sound of anarchists worldwide, but the music this

band produced in the mid 60s proves that even the most original ideas have an unexpected precedent.

Los Saicos were the greatest and most original Latin American garage rock band of the 1960s. They released six singles (and no LP) between 1965 and 1966, all songs being originals which was also a first for South American bands of the era.

In the late 1960s, a stream They were not aware of US garage rock or of the wilder British bands like the Downliners Sect; but, even though they listened mostly to the best-known British Invasion bands, they came up with a wild garage/surf sound that is unlike anything else recorded in Latin America at the time, and perhaps only paralleled by the Sonics in North America. They were also probably the only garage band anywhere to have been the most successful pop act in their country, as they were in 1965. Their anthem “Demolición” was one of the biggest radio hits of the year in Peru.

Los Saicos as some true pioneers in music. Los Saicos, who released all but one single through the small DisPerú label, unleashed “Saicomania” and led the way for dozens of bands throughout Peru. They have become legendary and many myths were created around their short existence and mysterious disappearance. Recently they revealed that they sim-

ply decided to stop playing and began to live “normal” lives, with two Saicos (lead singer Erwin Flores and bass player César “Papi” Castrillón) eventually moving to the US and still living there. Sadly, Rolando Carpio passed away in early 2005. Pancho Guevara still lives in Lima. In 2006, the surviving Saicos reunited in the Lince district of Lima for some commemorations but have not played together in public since 1966.

Punk Rock is a rock music genre that developed between 1974 and 1976 in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. Rooted in garage rock and other forms of what is now known as protopunk music, punk rock bands eschewed the perceived excesses of mainstream 1970s rock. They created fast, hardedged music, typically with short songs, stripped-down instrumentation, and often political,anti-establishment

lyrics. Punk embraces a DIY (do it yourself) ethic, with many bands selfproducing their recordings and distributing them through informal channels. By late 1976, bands such as the Ramones, in New York City, and the Sex Pistols and The Clash, in London, were recognized as the vanguard of a new musical movement. The following year saw punk rock spreading around the world. Punk

quickly, though briefly, became a major cultural phenomenon in the United Kingdom. For the most part, punk took root in local scenes that tended to reject association with the mainstream. An associated punk subculture emerged, expressing youthful rebellion and characterized by distinctive clothing styles and a variety of anti-authoritarian ideologies.

The Clash English rock band that formed in 1976 as part of the original wave of British punk rock. Along with punk rock, they experimented with reggae, ska, dub, funk, rap and rockabilly. For most of their recording career, The Clash consisted of Joe Strummer (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Mick Jones (lead guitar, vocals), Paul Simonon (bass, backing vocals, occasional lead vocals) and Nicky “Topper” Headon (drums, percussion). Headon left the group in 1982, and internal friction led to Jones’s departure the following year. The group continued with new members, but finally disbanded in early 1986.

I.R.A.is a Colombian hardcore punk band from Medellín, Antioquia, formed in 1985 by David Viola (at present, guitarist and vocalist of the band) and some of his friends that have already left the band. It is one of the old est bands that still exist in Medellín, thanks to the perseverance of David Viola. Its long career and recent tours in the United States have made i tone of the most important and popular punk bands in Medellín and Colombia. In their songs, they talk about, and criticize, the actual situation of Colombia and the world, and also about the life and feelings of people in this situation.

History I.R.A. was formed in 1985, under the name S.I.D.A. (“Sucios y Desordenados Anarkistas”) (“Dirty and wild Anarchists”), by a group of friends that used to meet in the park of El Poblado in Medellín. The band was formed at that time by: Yoryi on the drums, José R on the bass, José Juan on the guitar and Viola as the vocalist. They started rehearsing in the house of a friend, but were

so on thrown out because of the noise and disorder of the public hat attended; they then began tore tone of the first rehearsing places that existed in Medellín, where the quality of the sound was bad. Still, it was one of the few options that the band had in order to continue. In 1986 they changed the name of the band to I.R.A. (“Ideas de Revolución Adolescente”) (“Ideas of Adolescent Revolution”). By this

time, they had already found other places to rehearse in friends’ houses and abandoned places, but those were rehearsals with little or no public, hoping to avoid problems. In 1989, the band had its first performance; it was in the La Visitation neighborhood of Medellín. The same year, the band records in Chava Bluss Studio sits first work: Barkizidio, a 7” EPwithninesongs.

I hate Botero A punk rock outfit from Bogota, Colombia, Odio a Botero was founded by guitarist Jaime Angarita and vocalists age Rene in 2000. Both Angarita and Rene had been well known in the cities’ punk rock circles, having been a part of the earlier bands Defenza and Basura. Eventually, after having gone through a number of drummer changes (bassist Alejo Pinzon settled in early, and second vocalist Carolina Cantor was in the group by 2001) which finally ended in 2005 by the appointment of Gregorio Merchan, the group was ready to work on recorded material, and emerged from the studio with the EP Omar Nelson in 2002. A fulllength, Odio a Botero, followed in 2004. Their next release, the Lechoneria Manson EP, was a huge hit, eventually selling over a million copies, and cemented the band’s reputation and place in their home country. 2007 would see Odio a Botero return to the fore, when they released their second full-length collection, Kill the Cuentero.

Often regarded as the first punk rock group. Formed in Forest Hills, Queens, New York, in 1974, all of the band members adopted stage names ending with “Ramone”, though none of them were actually related. They performed 2,263 concerts, touring virtually nonstop for 22 years. In 1996, after a tour with the Lollapalooza music festival, the band played a farewell show and disbanded. A little more than eight years after the breakup, the band’s three founding members, lead singer Joey Ramone, guitarist

Johnny Ramone, and bassist Dee Dee Ramone, were dead. The Ramones were a major influence on the punk rock movement both in the United States and Great Britain, though they achieved only minor commercial success. Their only record with enough U.S. sales to be certified gold was the compilation album Ramones Mania. Recognition of the band’s importance built over the years, and they are now regularly represented in many assessments of all-time great rock music, such as the Rolling Stone

lists of the 50 Greatest Artists of All Time and 25 Greatest Live Albums of All Time, VH1’s 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock, and Mojo’s 100 Greatest Albums. In 2002, the Ramones were voted the second greatest rock and roll band ever in Spin, trailing only The Beatles. On March 18, 2002, the Ramones—including the three founders and drummers Marky Ramone and Tommy Ramone— were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
