INTERVENTION IN THE CONSERVATORIO DELLA SVIZZERA ITALIANA ACADEMIC PROJECT, USI - ACCADEMIA DI ARCHITETURA, FALL SEMESTER 2015 LOCATION: VIA SOLDINO, LUGANO TEACHER IN CHARGE: ARQ. ANTONIO CITTERIO

The intervention appeared as an answer to the increasing demand for space and specific facilities of the conservatorium. The brief specified the rearrangement of the 19th century building and consequent solving of technical issues, and the enlargement of the complex that will also meet the needs of the community around.

The concept of the project was brought up as a need to clarify the typology of the preexisting U shaped building, originally built as an seminary, that despite the clear intention of facing inside towards the “courtyard” created instead a space that became totally disregarded and ultimately unused. This motivated an intervention that was capable of reviving the latent cloister typology, and offer the conservatorium a common foyer space between the studying space and the new performance area that would be open to the public. In that sense, the new volume is placed in a way that becomes capable of defining and closing the composition and with a glass facade that mirrors the old building and visually completes the “cloister”.

URBAN ART CENTER ACADEMIC PROJECT, FAUP, 2015 LOCATION: AVENIDA DA PONTE, OPORTO TEACHER IN CHARGE: ARQ. GRAÇA CORREIA RAGAZZI

The plot is a controversial site of the city of Porto, left undefined for years, where a big rock outcrop stands. The project for the Urban Art Center searches for a solution able to deal with the huge height differences in the plot and the current limit indefinition of the avenue, that will have Álvaro Siza building on the other side.

The proposal focused on creating a plane facade that keeps the building undisturbed from all the movement in the avenue, and at the same time filters and absorbs the city dynamics into itself. The option of dethatching the facade´s concrete plane from the building had as main purpose the light and views control, seeking an inner building dynamic, that lives of the constant circulation happening simultaneously at different levels. The building acts like an extension of the city that meets it in the upper and lower level, enabeling connections between the avenue and the old historical center above. For that to happen some of the old buildings on the plot are repurposed as access points, integrated in the new building system.

COLLECTIVE HOUSING ACADEMIC PROJECT, FAUP, 2014 LOCATION: FRANCOS, OPORTO TEACHER IN CHARGE: ARQ. LUÍS VIEGAS

The project derives from a first phase of work in a urban plan for an undefined area of the city of Oporto. The proposal answered with different density buildings concerning the characteristics of the site. The presented building is a study on typology and the relations between the public and private spaces.

Located in a corner of the plot, the L shaped building tries to define the existing neighborhood while solving the transition between the highway and the metro station. This duality of realities called for a different expression of the two volumes and its in their intersection that the acess is granted. The cohesion in the language of the building it’s achieved by the detached access gallery, that runs through the project. More than a functional element, it becomes a device of design capable of generating a different ambiance, in a game of light and shadows with galleries that “communicate”. The main volume, elevated from the ground, tries to explore the permeability with the surroudings, both visually and spacially, where the public and the private context meet, coexist and define each other.

INFINITE HOUSING ACADEMIC PROJECT, FAUP, 2014 LOCATION: ----------- CONCEPTUAL PROJECT TEACHER IN CHARGE: ARQ. LUÍS VIEGAS

The project arrises from a conceptual exercise on dewling typologies, aiming for a deeper analisies on the common ways to build and inhabit. The proposal focuses on the topics of maximum density and access to the building and how it affects neighborhood relations. The project trys to combine the characteristics of individual access and singles access buildings, creating a hibrid. This subversion of typologies is donne in an attempt combine the best aspects of both models and eliminate weaker points as the waste of space on multiple individual accesses and the usual lack of natural light in the staircases. The facade is almost a metal courtain that allows a certain homogenization and abstractation that reenforces the focal point of the building that are the entrances. The creation of a “device” of common access to all homes, allow for an nearly antagonistic speech, where the individual accesses are placed together, becoming almost as if the “bowels” of the building were exposed; the machine that makes it all work.

CULTURAL CENTER AND RESIDENCE ACADEMIC PROJECT, FAUP, 2013 LOCATION: RIBEIRA(DOURO RIVER SIDE), OPORTO TEACHER IN CHARGE: ARQ. RODRIGO COELHO

Located in an historic part of Oporto, the plot belongs to the old trading harbor, now used as a parking lot. The brief asked for a cultural center and a residence as well as the rearrangement of the public space, creating connections between the city and the waterfront.

The proposal focus on the idea of a long and low profile building that rises and extends itself throughout the platform and able to control the public space. The option for an irregular and oddly shaped building with no windows represents the search for an abstractation and the detachment from the traditional housing behind it, avoiding in that sense disrupting the landscape when seen from the river and the other margin. The building takes advantage of the inflection in the street to insinuate the entrance that gradually goes underground searching for an ambiance of its own and leaves the surroundings to the public. The volumetry twists and turns configure and actively create public space, enabling and emphasizing the connection between the city and Douro River.

MODULAR CAFETERIA ACADEMIC PROJECT, FAUP, 2012 LOCATION: OURO (DOURO RIVER SIDE), OPORTO TEACHER IN CHARGE: ARQ. ANA ALVES COSTA

The plot is on Douro river side, next to an old and currently disabled shipyard, the aim was to build a cafeteria and a small pier that would stand on the water. The building had to respect a module of 2,5x2,5 meters creating different paths to make the transition between the city and the river, allowing people to go near the water.

Taking advantage of the configuration of the street the project becomes a natural flow of the already existing path by the water, continuing it with a ramp that leads right to the cafeteria. The modulation is clear in the conception of different spaces, and especially concerned with the control of the views. In that sense the building is set apart from the wall to enrich the experience of wandering through it. The sights range from more interior, enclosed and personal spaces, to framed or full views of the river. By using simple plans and axes the building becomes able to control and enhance the users perception of the river in a very rare moment of contact with the water in Oporto city .
