Note from the Editor

By Maria Fernanda Molinari Spring is in the air. It is the season to put away all the winter stuff, make changes in our houses and get ready for all the things summer has for us, even here in Miami where we can't tell exactly when does winter season begins or ends we hit the gym more often, wear brighter colors and show a younger much lively spirit. Our "In Brickell Life & Style Magazine" was born in winter and as this summer approaches we are making changes as well adding new sections like the music review of new releases by Leslie Ames a peruvian reporter and music producer for more than 20 years, the monthly exclusive cocktail recipe by Carlos Bruno and the so commented make up section by Maria Laura Carrizo make up artist to the celebrities. To spruce up, add color and a younger spirit to

this issue we feature in our cover the talented pop singer and writer Sindy Rush who's latest single "Get you Drunk" has obtained 200,000 views in You Tube in less than a month, song she'll be performing in her concert at Kukaramakara Brickell this month. From ABC Family Network arrives Sara Hulevitz who is going to give us an inside view of her tv show about women's health, wealth, wellness and fashion "Legal Fashionista" all this while we celebrate this year the Actor's Playhouse 25th anniversary with six exciting Mainstage productions. As I said... "Spring is in the air". I hope you enjoy reading this issue as much as we did making it. I see you next month with more exciting new sections. iN

LAURA’S BRUSH

what types of make up should i use? We can start by applying a primer; this is a relatively new product that is used so the foundation lasts longer. (It’s not necessary, but worth a try). The objective of the foundation is to make your skin look perfect, or close to perfect. There are different types of foundation: Liquid, cream, hydrating with tint, loose powder and compact powders. The color of the foundation has to be match as closely as possible to your color skin, it as to have the same pigment tone of your skin.

If your skin has yellowish tones, don’t use pink tones. The liquid foundations can be light or have a dense consistency depending on the type of coverage needed and are very easy to apply. The cream foundations may have moisturizer and cover the skin greatly. As the name implies, it is a moisturizer that has a pigment to cover up imperfections. A lot of these foundations besides having moisturizer they also have sun block.

By Maria Laura Carrizo With this product we eliminate two steps: Sun block and foundation. They are ideal for people who don’t like wearing make up , don’t have the time for it and don’t require much to cover up their imperfections. There are two types of powder: loose and compact. There’s a special type powder that looks like the compact powder, but if applied with a sponge and a little bit of water they turn creamy and can substitute the foundation. You can use the powders the same color of your skin, or transparent or translucid. I prefer the second, but if you only apply powder without foundation then it will be better to have the powder the same color of your skin. Lastly, we will talk about concealers. They come in various sizes, shapes and colors, as far as texture, there are liquid, creams and bars. The liquid concealer is the most widely used on dark circles, it has a medium coverage and is easy to apply. The cream corrector and bars have a denser coverage and are used in different colors when the dark circles are more pronounced. iN

• 10 to 15 before applying foundation or powders clean your face and apply moisturizer. Wait 10-15 minutes to apply your make up, this will help make your skin look more radiant. • Do not try foundation on your wrist, try it on your face and neck and try to go to natural light to find the correct color. • If the compact and loose powders are used incorrectly they could add years to your face. If used well they could be your best allies. • Compare different brands of foundation, ask for a sample and try it for a couple of days. • The thick consistency of a foundation could make wrinkles and lines of expression more visible. • If you use the wrong foundation color, the foundation will be visible and it wont match the color on your body. • To make the coverage better, you can use loose powder on top of the foundation. • The foundations with color don’t have much sun block; they should only be used when we will not be exposed to the sun. If you will be exposed, make sure you apply extra protection. • Not everyone needs concealer, you only use it when there are specific necessities. If the dark circles are soft, you can cover them with the same foundation.

Sindy rush

Sindy Rush

By Alex Aime

Every star deserves to twinkle. The time for local artist Sindy Rush (Sindy Espitia) to shine is rapidly approaching. Her passion for music started at a young age in her native Colombia; where she studied guitar, piano, and singing. As a child she listened to Bon Jovi and Guns and Roses. Her move to Miami, FL was just what she needed to jump start her career in the entertainment industry. Miami being a haven and vacation hot-spot for many of the accomplished superstars of our time was a blessing in disguise. Sindy began to network and work with some of the top producers and artists, including Cash Money artist Kevin Rudolf, grammy award winning producer Scott Storch, and was casted as a vampire in the future film “The Bleeding along side DMX.

During the week, Sindy spends her time in state-of-the art studios writing away her life experiences and catchy tunes to keep improving her content and express her emotions to her ever-growing fan base. Alongside her older brother/producer, Jimmy Jamez, the bass and speakers blast with quality week in and week out and what is released is tantalizing beats that give hope to two young individuals working nonstop for a career filled with success. With the guidance of her brother, Sindy makes her daily routine of creating beautiful music a family affair. Being around her brother, gives her the opportunity to receive instant critiques on her music from a source who knows her best. With many future projects in the works along with talks of being an opening act in a nationwide tour for a major recording artist next year, there are many reasons why we should keep our ears and eyes open for the sound of the next and upcoming artist from our own back yard: Sindy Rush. iN

Pregnancy & Your Oral Health

By Dr Marta Gainza

C

ongratulations! So you are pregnant or planning on having a baby. A lot of preparation goes into the anticipated arrival of your baby. Eating healthy and prenatal vitamins are a major part of your preparation. But where does your oral health come in? Studies show that poor oral health can associated with low birth weight babies. Wise tails tell of pregnancy destroying the mother's teeth. This is not entirely true. Potential stomach acid damage to the enamel surface can be managed. In many cases, when a pregnant patient presents with a dental emergency, there was a preexisting problem that had not been addressed. In many cases there are issues that may be identified and resolved prior to a pregnancy. Whenever possible, it is best to avoid an emergency during pregnancy. Gingivitis is an inflammatory response of the gingival tissues (gums). Gingivitis can be associated with redness of the gum, swelling, and gingival bleeding. I many cases the patient has calculus built up.

Calculus is plaque (includes food and bacteria) that was not brushed or flossed away and your saliva calcified it. The presence of calculus irritates the gums and your body's immune system reacts with an inflammatory response of the gums. Gingivitis can flare up and worsen during the added generalized inflammation a woman experiences during pregnancy. The taste of blood can also be an issue for some moms. A good cleaning prior to pregnancy is advised. On occasion, there may be a sub clinical infection, that is an infection that is present but that has not gotten to the point of resulting in symptoms, but with the pregnancy it can flare up and be associated with pain. A toothache or oral infection while pregnant is not part of the pregnancy experience you want to have.

If you are planning on getting pregnant... You should have a complete check up and cleaning with your dentist. If you are planning in vitro fertilization (IVF), make your dental visit a priority. Don't wait until two weeks before the IVF in the event there are issues that require multiple dental visits to complete. Managing gingival inflammation (gingivitis) associated with bleeding gums is best managed prior to pregnancy, so the bleeding does not worsen during pregnancy. If your dentist identifies issues that are infections waiting to flare up, you should get that addressed prior to your planned pregnancy. There are cases where a pregnant patient comes in with an emergency of an an infected tooth she had been advised prior should have had a root canal or extraction.

Also if there are teeth that your dentist has told you are at significant risk for fracture, it is best to manage the problem prior to pregnancy.

If you are already pregnant... If you have a dental emergency during your pregnancy it must be addressed. Your dentist will require a written clearance from your OB/GYN. In a dental emergency any necessary xray will be taken and local dental anesthesia will be administered. Proper shielding apron is used in all cases for xrays. A dental xray is directed to the tooth and not the abdomen, and provides the dentist with necessary diagnostic information for your treatment. Dental anesthesia is administered for your comfort for the procedure, and does not harm the baby. For infections, since an infection should not be allowed to continue untreated, the patient will likely be placed on antibiotics. As long as your pregnancy is stable, and OB/GYN has cleared you, you may have a regular dental cleaning during your pregnancy. Any elective treatment will be deferred until after you have the baby.

Nausea and pregnancy... Acid can damage the surface of your enamel. The stomach acid from nausea and vomiting should be followed with brushing. At the very least a good rinse to removed the stomach acid from your mouth. Brushing is the ideal. Sometimes, moms are bothered with the taste of tooth paste. Sometimes it the foaming of the toothpaste. You can try a gel that tends to foam less than a paste. If that does not work for you, instead of toothpaste, you can also try dipping the toothbrush in a bit of mouth rinse and then brush. Cinnamon is a flavor most expectant moms will tolerate. If all fails, then just brush with a wet toothbrush. If you tend to experience vomiting throughout the day, then try carrying a toothbrush with you. You might also ask your dentist about disposable toothbrushes which come both unpasted or pre-pasted.

Contribute to your overall health by paying attention to your oral health. Having a baby is a wonderful life experience. The design of the creation of life is truly a miracle and it is a blessing. Information on how to care for your baby's oral health will follow. iN

Consequences of a criminal conviction on immigration

By Sara Shulevitz As a criminal defense attorney who is a former prosecutor and da former public defender in Miami, a major issue in criminal cases is a defendant’s citizenship status. Before a defendant can plea to a criminal offense an attorney must be aware of the defendant’s legal status in the country. If the accused is not a citizen of the United States, a plea to a felony or any crime of ‘moral turpitude’ can subject a defendant to deportation. What are these offenses? Aggravated felonies such as murder, rape, sex offenses, arson, robbery, gran theft felony drug possession or dealing, felony DUIs involving death or serious injuries etc subjecs one to deportation. Additionally, any crime of ‘moral turpitude’ also encompass several misdemeanor offenses that may seem minor. Pleading to these cases either guilty or even a no contest plea can have serious immigration consequences. Petit theft, domestic violence cases, battery or assault, certain DUI cases etc. may subject one to deportation. Even a plea to a withhold of adjudication counts as a conviction for immigration purposes, subjecting a defendant to possible deportation.

Even sealing or expunging the case is still viewable by INS – Immigration and Naturalization Service. Therefore, if one is not a citizen of the United States, they should consult with an attorney before making any decision in resolving their criminal case. This article is just a very brief overview into a very complex subject and one should discuss the intricacies of their specific cases and charges with a competent attorney. Please be aware each case different and one should consult with a competent criminal and immigration attorney. iN Please feel free to contact me at dasarashul@aol.com

By Maribel Pedrozo Men are like bears, the less attractive and more manly, the more attractive. The English writer, Mark Simpson, created the term Metrosexual and now the opposite is the Retrosexual man. But who are these men? What do they do? Characterized for investing the least amount of time, money and effort in their personal appearance. Once in a while they allow their significant other to select their clothes for a special ocassion. Their look is defined as manly without being macho style.

Characteristics -Enjoy being hands-on when changing a tire, doing home improvements and making a BBQ. -Avoid shopping for trendy clothes and only buy what they need and it is usually a casual look. -Do not cover their gray hairs. -A spa will only interest them for a massage or simple facial. -Always pay the bill and behave like true gentlemen. -Feeling clean and smelling good is all it takes to satisfy them. -Are good providers and offer a sense of protection. Some of these men are: Javier Bardem, Richard Gere, Benicio Del Toro, Jorge Ramos, Matthew Mconaughey, Russell Crowe. Maybe the metrosexual man is in danger, whose great icon is David Beckham. I personally do not believe so. Both trends are growing. The cosmetics, beauty and fashion industry continue to grow worldwide.

Actor's Playhouse celebrate it's thSilver Anniversary

25

Actor's Playhouse celebrates its 25th Silver Anniversary in 2012-2013. Like the little engine that could, the company opened in a Kendall strip mall in 1988, survived Hurricane Andrew in 1992, then renovated and restored the historic Miracle Theatre into a three-stage performing arts center in 1995 in partnership with the City of Coral Gables. One of 22 major cultural organizations in Miami-Dade County, and the largest self-producing company for Mainstage and Children's Theatre in South Florida, Actors' Playhouse has made its mark by providing artistic excellence, building community partnerships, and developing a

new generation of theatre supporters through entertaining and engaging programs. Over the years Actors' Playhouse has been nominated for 256 Carbonell Awards and has brought home 71. Its Children's Theatre is continually acknowledged as "Best of the Best" with the Kids Crown Award presented by South Florida Parenting Magazine, and its leaders are recognized for their business and artistic excellence. "Actor's Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre is one of our most prized cultural institutions in Miami-Dade County, producing outstanding theatrical and educational programs for the community," said Michael Spring, director of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs. "We are extremely proud of their stellar achievements over the years as one of South Florida's leading and award-winning theater companies."

Actors' Playhouse will produce six exciting Mainstage productions to celebrate their 25th Anniversary in 2012-2013. Opening the season October 10 - November 4 is Stephen Schwartz and John-Michael Tebelak's Godspell. Based on the gospel according to Matthew, a revival of the 1976 show is currently running at Broadway's Circle in the Square Theatre. Next comes award-winning composer Jason Robert Brown's The Last Five Years, an intimate musical told from the perspective of a husband and wife whose marriage is coming apart, playing December 5 - 30. Other Desert Cities, the funny and searing play by Jon Robin Baitz (the creator of TV's Brothers & Sisters) that received universal acclaim in its off-Broadway debut at Lincoln Center Theater and is currently playing on Broadway will be produced at the Miracle Theatre January 16 - February 10. And then, March 6 - April 7, comes the first South Florida regional

{

production of In the Heights, the vibrant Lin MirandaQuiara and AlegrĂa Hudes musical set in Manhattan's multicultural Washington Heights neighborhood. The Fox on the Fairway, another farce by Lend Me a Tenor playwright Ken Ludwig, follows May 8 - June 2. It's a charmingly madcap adventure about love, life, and man's eternal love affair... with golf. One more great show is yet to be announced and is sure to guarantee that this season is the company's best yet! "The last twentyfour years have proven our continued commitment to excellence," said Artistic Director David Arisco. Season twenty-five will feature hilarious comedies, poignant musicals and dramatic flair, our trademark eclectic mix of the best professional regional theatre has to offer. Â My sincerest gratitude to all who have helped this organization reach its Silver Anniversary." iN

Subscriptions for the 25th anniversary season range from $185 for previews to $435 for Gala Opening Night subscriptions. To become a part of the Miracle as an Actors' Playhouse subscriber, call 305.444.9293 or order online at www.actorsplayhouse.org

By Leana Astorga Astorga.leana@gmail.com @leanaastorga Florida is not only known as a sunny paradise, ideal for vacationing and letting loose, but also as the second largest hydroponic marijuana-producing state after California. The hydroponic gardening is a specialized home horticulture process that can grow plants much faster, without the need for large amounts of land or open fields such as in a traditional nursery. The latest police raids against these drug crops to mostly private homes have shown that the majority of arrestees are Cuban rafters, newcomers to the country. In fact, the U.S. DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency) has data connecting these drug traffickers to Cuba, where they are investigating networks from Havana that will hire and send to Florida these caretakers to oversee these illegal plantations. Sources indicate that these traffickers rely more on the Cubans than any other immigrant group, because they do not have any problems with immigration documents once they make the 90 miles journey and are very adaptable and resourceful. This type of marijuana crop is harvested quarterly. The income to the caretakers oscillates from $25,000 to $35,000,

"I have seen numerous homes with hydroponics crops, but there was one that impacted me greatly. Living inside this home, where the marijuana was grown, was an entire family including a two-year old child and one infant just months old" said Miguel Gutierrez, freelance cameraman with years of experience in filming news segments around the world. The United States is the leading country in the production of this type of marijuana, a situation that worries the authorities. "People should be alert of their surroundings and watch for signs so as to provide tips and help the police investigate. They should alert investigators immediately if they see something strange in a house or a neighbor's garage, such as minimum movement of people, machinery noise, and constant lighting. These houses are a ticking timebomb said Alvaro Zavaleta, spokesperson for the Miami-Dade County police department. "In most houses where marijuana is found, we also find firearms, body armor, vehicles to transport the drugs, and a lot of cash" commented Alvaro Zavaleta. During one of the largest raids in the past few years, authorities confiscated nearly 10,000 plants, with a street value of approximately $50 million, assuming the drug sells for $5,000 a pound. There is no solution in sight to this growing problem. In fact, state and federal officials are unable to mask the reality that marijuana use currently exceeds the alarming levels of the sixties. Compounding this problem is the financial crisis that has hit the country since 2008, with high levels of unemployment holding at 8.2% nationally, which is pushing many more people to join the club of the so-called "gardeners of marijuana." iN

mdna

ith the exception of clothing, Madonna has never been an innovative and trend setter, rather always been known for being on the penultimate fashion. With the revival of electronic music, it was not a surprise that the new album of the pop diva, MDNA, an allusion to the drug MDNA, better known as ecstasy, follow these guidelines. he single "Give Me all Your Luvin '" supported by Nicki Minaj and rapper MIA appears as the more commercial proposal of her twelfth album, the same we have heard ad nauseum with these desperate chorus of cheerleaders. In higher level appears the ballad "Masterpiece" from the soundtrack of Madonna's film "WE" which is highlighted by a melody accompanied by a delicate acoustic guitar. n his new album, the singer of Michigan does not shy away from achieving their personal life, with lyrics like "Try to be his wife, diminished myself and swallowed my life" in "I do not give an A" a clear allusion to his marriage with filmmaker Guy Ritchie. Despite this small sample of humanity there is not much of Madonna here. Or what is expected of her.

Covered

ot only the selection of the songs in "Covered" are mediocre but the interpretation of them shows no imagination. Usually when We think of the R & B singer that thought translate into a hoarse voice, rough and warm singer. ut Gray disappoint us this time giving us an album too adult and without sensitivity or empathy for the songs. With the only exception of "Maps" originally by Yeah Yeah Yeah, the rest of the covers that make the album of the artist's Ohio are lacking grace and even failure. As is the case of her version of "Creep" by Radiohead.

CHEERS The exact origin of the martini is unclear

Numerous cocktails with names and ingredients similar to the modern-day martini were first seen in bartending guides of the late 19th century. One popular theory suggests it evolved from a cocktail called the Martinez served at the Occidental Hotel in San Francisco sometime in the early 1860's, which people frequented before taking an evening ferry to the nearby town of Martinez. Alternatively, the people of Martinez say the drink was first created by a bartender in their town.Another theory links the first dry martini to the name of a bartender who concocted the drink at the Knickerbocker Hotel in New York City in 1911 or 1912 by Carlos Bruno carlitosbruno@hotmail.com
