Rafael Palombo Introduction

Introduction As a mid-level Interior Designer at Kiko Salomão Arquitetura, I have spent the past five years leading high-end projects for national and international clients, primarily in the residential sector. During this time I have acquired solid project management skills and innovative creative flair, being this creative-practical interaction what I am most passionate about my work and it would be a tremendous privilege to be part of the sensible and singular team of your company. I’m fascinated by the idea of simplicity and how minimal living offers a sense of liberation. It eliminates the trivial and emphasizes the simple beauty of the functional. Therefore I am interested in structuring spaces rather than dressing them. Creating comfortable spaces that make us feel human, through tactile, solid and warm aesthetic, a spatial composition where you carry the memory of details and the feeling of materials. I particularly enjoy stressing the beauty of the raw material in order to sharpen the senses, as Nietzsche wrote, ‘all evidence of truth come only from the senses’. Throughout my work at Kiko Salomão Arquitetura, I have participated in a collaborative and entrepreneurial work environment, where I took initiative and ownership for the projects, operating as the company’s number one person when regarding interior design and decoration matters. I am able to plan and coordinate all phases of a project, having recently delivered two residential projects in the USA, where, besides having extensively collaborated creatively, I also managed order scheduling and delivery and stocking logistics. These involved establishing an international network of suppliers, travelling with the clients to New York City to select and purchase all the furniture and decoration and afterwards I oversaw on site the moving in and handed the keys to the clients. Reforming conservative ideas motivates me daily to become a better creator, building a dense repertoire and refining my curatorial skills to match the specifics of each project, appreciating and further developing the research process. This constant search for the new gives me a wide knowledge of materials, finishes and national and international designers and brands, always being up to date with the market launches, having attended different fairs, like ISaloni and ICFF. To the practical side, I am involved in personal projects where I can develop my own ideas through craftsmanship and DIY approach, thoroughly exploring the constructive details, having recently delivered a residential interior design project in São Paulo where I designed some pieces of furniture and made their executive projects by hand. In addition, and also seeking this interaction between design and hands-on production, I started a creative and practical collaboration in a mentoring relationship with São Paulo’s most traditional brass fabricator and, as result of this engagement, I created a pendant light, in which I am working on currently. My professional experience brought me greater perception and showed me the importance of time management and organization in the creation and development of a project, having I structured the internal system for interior design in the company’s network, which today is the standard for new projects. I have strong work ethics and I am deeply involved with each step of a project, being able to work under pressure, solve complex problems and deliver the work on time and to a high standard, don’t minding the long hours to meet tight deadlines, all in order to deliver a detail and finish oriented project. I would very much like to have this opportunity to collaborate with your world-renowned firm which I believe to share the same values and that is highly in line with my aesthetic approach, and I am also intensely interested in contributing with my visual communication sensibility and my open and exploratory approach towards new ways of thinking spatial design with your team. My curriculum detailing my professional background is enclosed for your review and please expect my call on Tuesday, June 2nd to arrange a convenient time to discuss. Sincerely, Rafael Palombo

TA Residence With New York City as background, the intention behind this project was to set up an open apartment, bringing together social, dining and work areas, expanding the perception of the space and taking advantage of the singular views of the city while revealing its functionality. Designed for a young couple who had just moved into town, the project reflects their easygoing personalities, serving as an escape from the hustle of the city and providing an atmosphere that comfortably accommodates small gatherings, where the details and selection of materials were thought in order to express a pleasant simplicity. With a lean program and following the couple’s aesthetics orientation, a precise selection of contemporary furniture is complemented by a few exclusive pieces designed specifically for the project, such as the kitchen counter and the bedroom nightstand, where their exceptional collection of art, combined with a careful combination of textures, result in a cozy and comfortable residence.

Pendant Light Mixing materials that are not usually seen together, this pendant relates the coldness of the metal and the warmth of the Japanese paper, thus generating a comfortable light while maintaining a contemporary design. Composed of three independent parts coupled together, its nucleus is a custom LED printed circuit board which is fastened to the metal frame in which the paper-coated acrylic shade is attached by means of magnets, the piece is hung from a suspension cord that is tied to a metal canopy, where the LED driver is located. Following a minimal aesthetic, the light fixture is currently under production in collaboration with a couple of local fabricators, enhancing the dialogue between designers and makers from different disciplines and generations, evolving the community aspect of the design world in SĂŁo Paulo.

897 Residence A widely renovated duplex penthouse filled with design furniture selected from shops, design galleries and antique dealers around the world, the project has a chic essence without breaking away from the contemporary style, where darker hues convey the owners’ personality, a young couple with two daughters who likes to receive friends, thus having the apartment an active nightlife. Extremely exclusive, the luxury is in the project’s high personalization and I was responsible for the creation and development of all furniture designed in-house, also participating directly in concept generation and in the selection of all furniture, coating materials and fabrics, decorative lighting, styling pieces and decorative books, including travel to New York with the owners for the purchase of all these items, being responsible from quotations until delivery and control of budget and quality. Ultimately, I co-coordinated the styling and photo shoot and the project was published by Casa Vogue Brazil magazine, issue 351, in November 2014.

BP Coffee Table Conceived to be a remarkable piece and the focal point of the space, this coffee table created for the dark-hued living room of the 897 Residence follows the aesthetic guidelines imprinted on the project, where the selection of furniture composes a sophisticated setting. With the idea of having an element that would lighten up and anchor the room together, since the other furniture is loose from the ground, a light colored raw block of stone was sliced and shaped in order to give the table the desired visual weight in a way that would not sink the whole surrounding. Custom built in a Brazilian granite, this piece was fabricated according to the highest standards and I was responsible for its creation and development, from sketching, material research and coordinating the executive project to meetings with the executors to assess design solutions until final delivery.

Monolith It all began while watching again Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece, “2001: A Space Odyssey”, where an imposing structure provides a connection between the past and the future, a fearsome element that can pose a threat when intimately contemplated, but that in reality has been accompanying and influencing the evolution of man. This understanding made me associate the meaning of the Monolith unveiled in the eponymous novel by Arthur C. Clarke with my conception of the human relation to art, which is linked to the history of man and the world, and sometimes can be understood as something intimidating, but that in fact when experienced free from any judgment, it dialogues with our society, stimulating its progression. This reflection gave rise to this proposal for a permanent pavilion in Inhotim, an open-air gallery set amid botanical gardens in southeast Brazil, where, through a time and space apparently without goals or intentions, offers a moment dedicated to contemplation and self-knowledge. As a monolithic volume that appears to have fallen from the sky and now rests in the middle of the forest, the secluded solid block is composed of a sequence of timeworn iron sheets embraced by the landscape in its surroundings, where two openings indicates the ways inside. Thought of as a trajectory of self-perception to be followed, a narrowing tunnel gradually transitions the exterior into the interior, where the imposing proportion leads to reflective thinking and materiality forces presence and the perception of the space. The upper patio is a readjustment space, where contact with the outside world is resumed, in which a large modular skylight emerges from the ground, becoming a translucent plaza that at night is illuminated from the inside out. Access to the pavilion is through a thicket path that marks the beginning and end of this course that offers the opportunity to expand one’s own consciousness, being aware of the very essence, as Hermann Hesse wrote, “The true profession of man is to find his way to himself.”

Counter The first element to come across when inside the TA Residence, this counter was created with the intention of shortening the boundary between art and design, acting as a functional sculpture made up of a set of basic geometrical shapes. Following the aesthetic guidelines adopted for the project and serving as an extension of the kitchen countertop, and also acting as a dining sideboard or even accommodating small meals, the piece was created to gather various situations and assume several roles in order to favor the fluidity of space. Composed of three solid blocks of sandstone apparently arranged at random, the smaller base is retreated, clearing the entrance of any visual obstacle, while the larger one is on the opposite side, structuring the entire top, which rests delicately over them, conferring an unexpected lightness to a piece entirely made of stone.

19505 Residence The sea was the starting point for the project of this apartment standing by the sand and surrounded by its own terrace, which has the terrazzo floor with large hand broken marble pieces as major particularity and makes use of its unique luminosity and views as main elements of design. Minimal in its essence, light hues are the backdrop for this home that is filled with contemporary furniture selected in shops around the world and also designed exclusively, which I was responsible for their creation and development. I also participated directly in concept generation and in the selection of all furniture, coating materials, fabrics and decorative lighting, including travel to New York with the owners for the purchase of all these items, being responsible from early quotations until final delivery and control of budget and quality. Lastly I travelled to Miami to setup the apartment, where I handed the keys to the owners and coordinated the photo shoot that was later published by Casa Vogue Brazil magazine, issue 369, in May 2016.

With a clean design and still quite decorative, the beauty is in the details, such as the small gap between marble and brass, and the slight curves that connect the legs to the top, making this piece a favorite of fellow interior design practices, such as international design firm Yabu Pushelberg. Exceptionally well crafted with local partners, this piece was fabricated according to the highest standards and I was responsible for its creation and development, from sketching, material research and coordinating the executive project, to meetings with the executors to assess design solutions until final delivery.

Conceptual 2017 95m2 Amazonas River AM Brazil

Victoria-amazonica The Brazilian folkloric tales inspired this series of floating cultural centers forming an eco-friendly route along the Amazon river with the purpose of bringing back to life the country’s indigenous traditions and increasing conscious tourism in one of the most important natural destinations on the planet. With all profit to be invested in the preservation of the local communities, each pavilion is dedicated to a different tale and this one is based on the legend of the Giant Water Lily, which tells that on the banks of the Amazon River, the beautiful women of an Indian tribe gathered to stare at the beauty of the Moon, dreaming of becoming one, since they believed it would be so if they touched it. The young Naiá took the river trails hoping to fulfill her dream and found the Moon quietly reflected on the water’s surface, thinking that it had come to allow her touch, Naiá plunged into the river and disappeared, being transformed by the Moon into a giant flower that spreads over the water to receive the its full light. The largest water lily in the world, the victoria-regia is a native plant of the Amazon River basin with large round leaves and an upward-facing border that can withstand heavy weights and when it blooms has a slightly pink with red rims white petal. Incorporating the mystical quality of the legend and the physical aspect of the aquatic plant, my proposal hovers upon a structure in its shape, where an overlapping cover forms the silhouette of a waning crescent moon, protecting its interior. Reached only by boat and resting on a floating structure, the entrance to the pavilion forces a short leap over the water mirror, as Naia’s diving, that borders the inner perimeter of the anchored vessel. Intending to make it disappear amongst its surroundings, the chosen elements resembles the Indian natural habitat, bringing together locally sourced materials hand crafted by the native community within a contemporary aesthetic, thus connecting itself to the current social context, in order to shine a light in the country’s popular heritage.

Design 2016 111 x 70 x 49 cm Terrazzo

Side Table Located below a window at the height of the treetops, the design of this side table refers to the casual seating of the bleachers, where one can sit and lean against the wall, being created as a hybrid of table and bench, maintaining its support function while allows it to take part of the layout as a seating spot. With basic geometric shapes, the formal simplicity draws attention to its materiality, adding the tactile experience as an essential part of the design and giving a new meaning to a rather common material. Bringing the main corner of the living room back to everyday use, the mixed-use piece is composed of three independent modules built in terrazzo slabs and slightly loose from the ground, thus facilitating new arrangements according to the needs and giving the solid blocks a lightness feel, as if they were floating in space.

Styling 2012 515m2 São Paulo SP Brazil

910 Residence Having just moved in to their newly renovated apartment, in which the owners opted to follow a singular project that would meet their desire to escape the conventional and have enough room for their art collection, that features works by artists such as Julio Le Parc, Geraldo de Barros, Marina Abramović and Carlos Cruz-Diez, there were a few furniture and decor pieces still missing to complete the project, so a master styling was organized for the purpose of photographing the residence, where I was responsible for documenting the status in which the apartment was, map the critical points and draw up a plan on how to fill those gaps. This included the research of various furniture, decorative pieces and artworks that matched the project’s concept, and logistics coordination, in order to have it all arranged for the photo shoot, that was later published in Brazil by Wish Casa magazine, issue 14, in November 2014, and also in the same year by German publishing house Gestalten, in the book “The Chambers of Curiosity”.

GP Sideboard Placed between an invisible door and a wall, this sideboard designed for the dining room of the 897 Residence confers a visual lightness to the restricted space, camouflaging itself on the wall where it is fixed, attending its functional purpose and allowing a pleasant circulation around it. In line with the elegant concept of the project, the piece has a simple design, with a brass sheet coating the edges and top of a thin wooden base, where the straight front limits its advance and the angled sides allows the piece to breath in its extremities. Made to measure according to its surrounding, this piece was fabricated according to the highest standards and I was responsible for its creation and development, from sketching, material research and coordinating the executive project, to meetings with the executors to assess design solutions until final delivery.

Scenography 2017 275m2 Vitória ES Brazil

Endgame Originally developed for my bachelor’s degree thesis, I return to the project for a scenography proposal for the play “Endgame” by Irish playwright Samuel Beckett, which depicts a context of calamity, where the characters are survivors adrift who succumb through a monotonous wait for the end of existence, this way conceiving a new study as means of reflection over the personal transformation that I have undergone since my graduation. Through an extensive research on the author and the historical context in which the work was written, I choose not to break with Beckett’s original ideas, following the guidelines of the set design’s brief description by the author in an effort to bring the work to a contemporary setting. This resulted in a scenography proposal for an alleged production of the play at the inauguration of Cais das Artes, a theater with project by Paulo Mendes da Rocha and Metro Arquitetos Associados, in the coastal city of Vitória, located in the Brazilian southeastern state of Espírito Santo, and opening scheduled for 2019. Unlike my previous proposal, I am even more radical about minimalism, forcing aesthetically the literary style that Beckett assumed, and instead of reinforcing the misery aura after World War II, the scenery acts as a neutral backdrop, breaking with the visual aspect inherent to the play and letting the human roughness set the tone of disgrace. Resembling a real place removed from our reality, the characters are taken away from a common spatial notion by the monumental scale of the space, where light tones attenuates the tactile quality of the materials, leaving the set with a neutral emotional load where gentle forms makes for a softer atmosphere, opposing the dissatisfaction portrayed. My attempt is to create a space of transition that relates existence and absence through the contrast between light and shadow, where the scenario becomes a sublime waiting room for the characters’ final redemption, where they can find inner peace and then move on to their next stages, since for them the end is imminent, but it can be a long wait.

“One day you’ll be blind, like me. You’ll be sitting there, a speck in the void, in the dark, for ever, like me. One day you’ll say to yourself, I’m tired, I’ll sit down, and you’ll go and sit down. Then you’ll say, I’m hungry, I’ll get up and get something to eat. But you won’t get up. You’ll say, I shouldn’t have sat down, but since I have I’ll sit on a little longer, then I’ll get up and get something to eat. But you won’t get up and you won’t get anything to eat. You’ll look at the wall a while, then you’ll say, I’ll close my eyes, perhaps have a little sleep, after that I’ll feel better, and you’ll close them. And when you open them again there’ll be no wall any more. Infinite emptiness will be all around you, all the resurrected dead of all the ages wouldn’t fill it, and there you’ll be like a little bit of grit in the middle of the steppe.”

Design 2015 60 x 40 x 13 cm Wood Aluminum

Nightstand Emerging from a stone and felt coated headboard wall where its mounted on, this floating drawer was designed to clear space in the contained master bedroom of the TA Residence, where emptiness was needed in order to provide visual comfort to the compact room. Following the functional and minimal concept behind the contemporary residential project, the nightstand was created as an element of the bedroom’s structure, where it serves as support and storage area while consuming minimum space, thus allowing the materiality of the room to stand out. The simple aesthetic outcome is strengthened by the precise thin edge of aluminum coated in wood veneer, which frames the entire front of the indented drawer, where the handle is carved on, accentuating its functionality and conferring the piece a subtle and light appearance.

Residential 2016 288m2 Miami FL USA

15795 Residence Created from the owners’ will for an uncomplicated project, the double height ceiling living room is the great attribute of this getaway apartment facing the sea, which has a fluid project with simple solutions that impart a minimal and relaxed concept. With no major interference in its structure and valuing natural light and the ocean view, few elements, plain materials and a selected composition of contemporary furniture provides the apartment the expected comfort, which still counts on a few exclusively designed pieces, such as the dining room mirror and the living room side table, where I was responsible for their creation and development. I also participated directly in the selection of all furniture, coating materials, fabrics and decorative lighting, including travel to New York with the owners for the purchase of all these items, being responsible from early quotations to budget management until final delivery and quality control, traveling to Miami to setup the apartment, where I handed the keys to the owners.

Design 2016 180 x 180 x 6 cm Mirror Aluminum

OM Mirror Created to fill the large dining room wall of the 15795 Residence, the challenge was to design a piece that suited the scale of the space, with a remarkable concept and easy to execute, following the minimal concept adopted for the project. Exploring the shape of the square, as well as Josef Albers in his series “Homage to the Square, the final design consists of a sequence of three decreasing squares, each one acting as an independent mirror and wrapped in its own aluminum frame. Custom made to act as the main decorative piece of the dining room, this piece was fabricated according to the highest standards by local partners in Miami and I was responsible for its creation and development, from sketching and material research to coordinating the executive project and meetings over the phone with the executors to assess design solutions until assemblage.

Residential 2016 150m2 São Paulo SP Brazil

DG Residence Sober and relaxed, the main task of this project for the remodelling of this urban apartment was to unravel its layout, tying together entrance hall and dining and living rooms, integrating all the space and increasing its fluidity. Created for a young couple who had just purchased their first residence, a casual design with no major structural interference was proposed following the lines of a comfortable minimalism, where the existing elements were worked in order to gain new textures, as the walls, that received a porous paint specially developed in collaboration with the construction team. The selection of furniture and art works was made exclusively of contemporary national designers and artists, valuing the current Brazilian scene, where I also designed some pieces specifically for this project, as the living room’s daybed and the dining room’s sideboard, that were already completed in this first phase, leaving for a second moment the production of other special pieces, as the living room’s rug and coffee and side tables.

Sideboard Cabinet, bar and sometimes a DJ table, this multipurpose piece designed for the DG Residence was created to meet the storage needs without compromising visual calm, creating the link for a smooth transition between living and dining rooms, where it also serves as support during dinner parties. Following the project’s informal concept, the wall mounted sideboard is composed of two opposing volumes, where the horizontal block up holds a vertical cupboard that rests, as if mistakenly positioned, on its top. Custom made to meet the specific needs of the owners, this piece was fabricated according to the highest standards by local partners in São Paulo and I was responsible for its development, from sketching and material research to the executive project and meetings with manufacturers to assess design solutions until final assemblage.

Residential 2017 under construction 825m2 Itatiba SP Brazil

03 Residence Conceived to stand out from its neighbouring peers, but still integrating itself with the surroundings, this house located inside a countryside condominium separates living, intimate and service areas into a set of three individual barns, where a disorderly disposition expresses the desire to break from the traditional conception of a country house. Aiming for a country coziness, the interior design project was originated simultaneously with the architecture and follows a contemporary style seen through rustic lenses, counting on an accurate selection of furniture purchased in shops around the world and also designed exclusively, by which I am responsible for their creation and development. Besides participating in the creation of the concept and color schemes, I am also directly involved in the selection of all furniture, coating materials, fabrics and decorative lighting, being responsible from quotations to budget control and delivery to the warehouse, since construction is scheduled to be completed in December 2017.

Design 2014 300 x 70 x 55 cm Wood Brass

HI Sideboard Addressed by a rational approach where functionality was key to deliver a well thought out TV and media unit that combines usefulness with a simple design, the sideboard has easy access to cabling and enough space for storage while maintaining an attractive exterior, following the concept behind the home theater it was designed for. The fine workmanship is seen through the subtle details, like the wood vein running in different directions and the brass handles that stretches to the floor, supporting the entire wooden box. Made to measure in order to accommodate specific equipment, the piece was fabricated according to the highest standards and I was responsible for its creation and development, from sketching, material research and coordinating the executive project, to meetings with the executors to assess design solutions until final delivery.

Residential 2016 200m2 SĂŁo Paulo SP Brazil

154 Residence Incorporating the grand terrace to the living area was key to the project for this extensively modified city apartment conceived for a single man in his mid thirties who cherishes national design and desired a casual and comfortable home, a cozy place to always return, given the constant travels. Following a sober and masculine concept, the bright dwelling had all the structural adjustments made by the developer while the building was erected and the original proposal features a stripped-down selection of furniture from Brazilian designers and a range of pieces designed in-house, for which I was responsible for their creation and development until the executive project. In addition to participating in the creation of the concept and color schemes, I also got directly involved in the selection of all furniture, coating materials, fabrics and decorative lighting, but as, unfortunately, the project was not concluded, we have no record of the final result and the designed furniture, neither control over what was actually purchased.

Design 2014 300 x 70 x 55 cm Wood Brass

SM Sideboard A refined design guided by its function, this sideboard was made to serve as support and meet the need for extra storage space for everyday objects as well as valuable items, thus counting on an electronic safe inside. Robust and at the same time delicate, the chosen materials relates to the concept behind the master suite for which it was designed for, maintaining an elegant exterior with exquisite details, such as the brass insertions running in different directions and the exclusively produced handles. Especially made to accommodate jewellery and other specific items, the sideboard was fabricated according to the highest standards and I was responsible for its development, from sketching, material research and coordinating the executive project, to meetings with the executors to assess design solutions until final delivery.
