Izghawa Compound
Type: Compound Residential Location: Izghawa, Doha Plot area: 7153 m2 Landscape area: 4289 m2
The generous plot size of the project allowed for a collaboration between the architecture and the landscape architecture departments, facilitated towards enhancing community living in compounds. Villa layout maximizes shared communal spaces throughout the site. Residents of the sixteen villas will share one building and four outdoor areas; the club house, kids playground, two sitting areas, and an open grass area. The concept of the design aimed at distiguishing the shared and private spaces through visual cues. The shared spaces were given irregular forms to contrast the formality of the private backyards. The common areas aimed at creating a sense of community for residents of the compound.

06 pm
Generally, the sun analysis of the site indicated the lack of shade in the northern area of the site. Shared area 1 got the least shade through out the day and required special attention in choosing the appropriate shading technique. The southern areas of the site were completed shaded by 4 pm throughout the year.

The most apparent spaces on site were the private backyards and shadred spaces, some of which were seperated by rows of areas apporiate for linear planting of palms and shade trees. The analysis of traffic on revealed discontinous pedestrian paths, which as a reslut will incourage user to walk along the road on site. the shared car predestrian path would include traffic calming structures and to allow for a safer pedestrian

To visually define spaces as shared or private, two diffrent forms were to represent the two types of space. The formal backyards reflected the vernacular forms of the villas, while sculptural and diagonal forms defined th shared space. the sculpurals and irregualar form of the Plumaria contrasted the facade of the villa. Liener planting in backyards paralled the faces of the villas. The irregularity of the shared spaces is gradual to represent the different age group of entended use. Area’s A and B are to be used by minors, and are full of visually simulating forms and colours. Areas C and the grass space for adults and are of a subdued design. The central road is to be paved and segmented by speed bumps to insure the safety of adults and kids while moving between thier private and shared spaces.

The playground included a sunken terraced rubber area with play equipment, splash pad, and custom designed stepping stones. Elements of adventure’s playground were incorporated to allow for formal and informal play and accommodate a variety of age groups and abilities.
The two seating areas offer various shade opportunities, and water features. Along with dense trees around borders, the confortable microclimate welcomes residents throughout the year.

Private backyards The compound has 2 typical backyards. Despite the difference in size, both gardens accommodate outdoor seating and sufficient space for planting. The light wooden dividers will offer privacy and support climbing plants. Built-in seating is provided along edges in shaded and semi shaded areas. One fruit tree in each back yard of differnt varities can spark conversation and shared fruits among the residents. The private landscape design is simple and uncluttered allowing residents to customize their outdoor living space.

PR003 Proposal for AL KAABI VILLA AT PEARL – Landscape Proposal
Al Obaidan Villa
Type: Private Villa Residential Location: Oniza, Doha Plot area: 2000 m2 Landscape area: 1450 m2
The traditional architecture and clients’ emphasis of family living shaped the design of this site. The sizable front and back yards presented sufficient space for a central garden, kids play area, and small gardening facilities. The central garden was shaped with symmetrical geometric hedging, paving, and water fountain to resemble an Islamic garden, which can be viewed and contemplated from the house and central pergola. The seating area under the pergola is adjacent to the playground to enable child monitoring. The back yard is a productive area of the landscape, as it contains raised planters of edible plants to be used in the adjacent kitchen. Overall, the designed aimed at embodying the Islamic garden. Plants around the site contained symbolism with reference to the Quran, and edible fruits such as mango’s and lemons. The site provided space for Islamic traditions such as grade tending, and contemplation.
Qatar University Road Type: Road, Public Art Location: QU, Dafna, Doha Length: 2000 m Project area: 120,000 m2 Road area: 45,000 m2 Landscape area: 75,000 m2
This project is part of Qatar University initiative to promote the quality of education and efficiency of services, as outlined in its wide strategy development plan 2010-2013. Currently, Qatar University’s architecture embodies the local character of Qatar as seen in souqs, mosques, forts, and palaces. The proposed transportation plan is composed of a primary road, and two secondary roads which connect the new male and female gates to the facilities on the Qatar University campus. A roundabout will be located in the middle of the primary road at a centralized location on the campus. The design of the hardscape, softscape, and public art sought to reflect the university efforts for innovation. Side walk width designed for comfortable pedestrian movement. The road lined with palm trees providing shade for pedestrians and framing the road for drivers. Native plant species were specified as an initiative to promote and enhance their use in the region. The roundabout’s location and size was ideal for a landmark public art sculpture. The in-house designed sculpture is a threefold Golden ratio spiral made of Stainless steel and supported by thin steel rods. The sculpture sought to push engineering limits represent the science and art of education on the Qatar university campus
