The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse The town mouse lives in a big house on a busy street.

2

A rich man and his family live there, too. They often have dinner parties with lots of delicious food.

At night, when the family are in bed, the town mouse comes out to eat the delicious food.

3

One day he decides to visit his cousin in the country.

4

The country mouse lives quietly in a small, simple house. “Hello!” says the country mouse, “Come into the kitchen and eat with me!”

5

“I have cheese, bread and apples simple food, but very good!” “Thank you!” says the town mouse. He looks at the table and thinks, “What poor food!” But he eats for an hour.

6

Then he says, “Come with me to visit the town. Our food is delicious! We have meat and fish, chocolate and chips, exotic fruit and ginger biscuits.

7

The next afternoon they arrive in town. They are hungry after the long journey.

8

“Can we eat?” asks the country mouse. “Well, yes.” replies the town mouse, “But not now. Just wait until midnight”. “Midnight?!” the country mouse is surprised.

9

At midnight when the house is quiet the mice go into the dining room. There is still lots of food on the table.

“Try the chicken and potato pie.” says the town mouse, “It’s my favourite! The chocolate and honey pudding is delicious too!” The mice start eating. 10

Suddenly they hear a noise: “GRRR!” “Oh no!” says the town mouse, “It’s the dog! Quick, follow me!” And they hide behind a clock.

11

At last the dog goes away. The mice return to the table and start eating again. But suddenly they hear another noise: “MIAOW!!

12

“Oh no!” says the town mouse, “It’s the cat! Quick, follow me!” And they hide on top of the bookcase.

13

At last the cat goes away. “Now we can eat!” says the town mouse. “Well” replies the country mouse, “I can’t eat! I have no appetite now. This house is too dangerous the people, the dog, and the cat! I’m going back to the country!”

14

“But the food here in town is so good!” says the town mouse. The country mouse shakes his head and replies, “It’s better to eat simple food in peace than rich food in fear. Goodbye!” And he returns to his simple, peaceful life in the country.
