The Phantom Ship is a novel by Frederick Marryat. It’s about a young man named Philip Vanderdecken.
Philip’s father was the captain of a ship called the Flying Dutchman. This ship became cursed because the captain made a promise to sail forever.
Now, the Flying Dutchman is a ghost ship that can never reach land.
Philip wants to save his father’s soul. To do this, he must find the Flying Dutchman and break the curse. He travels around the world, facing many dangers, and meeting strange people.
Philip is brave and determined, but it is very hard to find the ghost ship.
In the end, Philip finds the Flying Dutchman and… you can read the story and discover what happens!
forever: per sempre ghost ship: nave fantasma (to) reach land: approdare
curse: maledizione facing: affrontando
The ship was ready to sail for Europe and Philip Vanderdecken went on board. He did not mind where it was heading. He just wanted to go far away from Terneuse, from the memories of his wife, Amin, and her death.
GLOSSARY heading = (to) head for: dirigersi far away: lontano
Amin was a victim of the Inquisition. Her death was so unfair that he started to doubt the goodness of God. Because of her cruel death, now he believed only in the relic of the True Cross, which was hanging from his neck. That piece of the True Cross was the only thing that could make him join his Amin, his father and his poor mother and so put an end to his pains and find peace in another world where hate did not exist.
Inquisition: Inquisizione
goodness: bontà
relic: reliquia
True Cross: Croce di Cristo to join: ritrovarsi con qualcuno/a hate: odio
Philip was standing at the rear of the ship when somebody touched his elbow. “Long time no see.”, said the well-known hateful voice of pilot Schriften. He looked like a gargoyle, and his only eye was sparkling, as ever.
“Many years have passed, many vessels have been sunk, and your father’s Phantom Ship has taken many lives.” said he.
Philip looked at him and replied: “I hope our next meeting with him will be the last! I wish he would find peace forever!”
Shriften answered with emphasis: “I hope he will follow his destiny and sail until the Day of Judgement.”
rear: parte posteriore elbow: gomito hateful: odioso sparkling: luccicante
have been sunk: sono affondate I wish he would find peace: Vorrei che trovasse pace
The ship was sailing off the southern coast of Africa. The morning was beautiful, the breeze was light and steady, and the vessel was sailing with a wind at the speed of about four miles an hour. The Captain thanked the Holy Saints for this favourable weather.
