INTRO DUCTI ON
“The universe is full of magical things patiently waiting for our wits to grow sharper”. So wrote Eden Phillpotts, English author and playwrite. The quote is sometimes attributed to Irish poet William Butler Yeats and at other times to philosopher Bertrand Russell, but the sentiments remain the same, both powerful and inspiring. The world, or universe is indeed full of magical things, and the journey towards finding them is an exciting and fulfilling one, but when the author writes of them patiently “waiting for our wits to grow sharper” he does not mean that everything that can be created already has been! The challenge is not to simply find what is magical and already created: The challenge is in being able to create something that is new, exciting and equally magical. Creating the environment in which our wits “grow sharper” is a key challenge for all educational institutions since the ability to be creative or innovative is not something that can happen through direct instruction. The learning environment must be exciting and challenging, and must provide opportunities for students to develop their capabilities where they can succeed and fail in equal measure, but learn from the experience to express their new and original ways of viewing the world. Raffles believes in creating such opportunities both on and off campus, and the students are challenged to stretch the boundaries of their abilities whilst, at the same time, developing the skills required to be successful in the international world of the creative industries. Raffles students do not disappoint, and the quality of the work they produce is indeed magical in both its conception and delivery. I would like to congratulate all of the graduates and express my sincere wishes for a successful and rewarding future. The Graduate Exhibition Book is an outstanding tribute to these students and their work, and is a testament to the dedication and skills of their teachers and mentors. The ongoing challenge is to retain a passion for learning, and to recognize that the sharpening of our “wits” is not an overnight thing – it is a lifelong process and one that is filled with magic, inspiration, ongoing creation and joy.
