3 Pros & Cons About Studying Abroad So you just finished high school, you’ve got your cert and you’re only too happy to finally savor some freedom. For those who want an exciting tertiary education, studying abroad will give you the maximum amount of new experiences that cannot be achieved through local education. Perhaps you have a few countries in mind - like dynamic Australia, scenic New Zealand or even vibrant Asia. Whether you plan to head to further your studies in the cool Pacific or exotic Asia, it will be a very good idea never to underestimate foreign terrain.

Singapore is a very safe country. And I heard that Raffles Design Institute had a famous jewellery class, so I decided to come here. Previously, I was studying in Indonesia at Surabaya International School and I was looking for a Jewellery Design school in Korea and other countries. Most people suggested that I go to Raffles Design Institute at Singapore which is very near Indonesia.

RCDC Fashion Design Graduate Scores Job with Renowned Couturier This is what you need to know about fashion designer, Zuhair Murad:

resourcefulness for students to look for their own answers and opportunities.

Nationality: Lebanese

Raffles also adds several other opportunities for students to meet field professionals such as:

Label can be found in: Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America Design range includes: Haute couture, ready-to-wear, accessories, and eyewear Celebrities who wore his creations: Jennifer Lopez, Taylor Swift, Shakira, Katy Perry, Beyoncé Knowles, and many others.

On Thursday, 9 June 2011, we received big news through email from Robert De Giovanni. He is the Programme Director of Fashion Design and Fashion Marketing of Raffles College of Design and Commerce, Sydney. One of his students, Natalie Rizk, landed a full-time job with Zuhair Murad! Natalie got the opportunity for her big break through a school assignment. She had to email a fashion house for her project. After exchanging several emails with a designer there, they became friends. When there was a job vacancy with Zuhair Murad, Natalie was offered a full-time position! And Natalie Rizk became one of our many Raffles legends who realised their dreams of being a fashion designer. For those who are not too familiar with the world of fashion design…

Creations feature: Imaginative use of colours and fabrics, modernised inspirations of Grecian goddesses and Egyptian princesses. In a nutshell, he is one of those super fashion designers who have their collections on popular runways like Milan Fashion Week. And any designer who works for his label will earn a lot of credibility on their résumé. Not to mention, gain a lot of opportunities to build up his or her portfolio. There are many ways to taking your first step and approaching a couture house. Here is how our students at Raffles meet the right people: Studying at Raffles offers students plenty of opportunities to land jobs before graduation. Success depends on the student’s determination, skills, and also a bit of luck. While working on assignments, students are allowed to contact industry professionals for information. And this builds

Interned at Prada: RCDC Fashion Marketing Student, Michelle Johnson The good news is: consistent good performance in school will reward you at this point. Being an expert in your field of studies can make you a valuable resource at your internship company.

• Guest lectures by experts working in the industry.

• Course-related field trips, like to fashion exhibitions. And also to fashion shows like the Tokyo Girls Collection in Japan.

• Fashion-related competitions. Ou students are always encouraged to enter competitions to meet like-minded designers and rub shoulders with key people in the industry.

• Graduation fashion shows. All graduating fashion design students of Raffles have to prepare a collection for their graduation show. These pieces will be put on the runway to be judged by influential people in the industry.

• Plenty of fashion shows. Our fashion students around Asia Pacific practice their skills by designing for real fashion shows! Some are done for charity, some are big gala events where students are invited to design, and the good ones participate in internationallevel fashion shows in Raffles’ name.

“Through Raffles Program Director, Robert De Giovanni, I was able to secure industry work experience at Prada Australia in their PR & Advertising team which later developed into a coordinator role following my degree completion.” Michelle wrote in a testimonial.

In Michelle’s testimonial, she wrote: “Raffles provided me the option to study Fashion Marketing in an open learning environment. The course was designed to broaden ideas about the industry and also give an opportunity to relay what was learnt on a practical level. One of the significant advantages of the course was being taught by industry professionals who gave invaluable insight into the fashion world and business environment.” Preparing for an internship

Students can gain commercial experience at Raffles

Ultimately, everyone goes for an interview at a company alone. The good ones will be awarded with a position – Simple as that.

Every bachelor degree student at Raffles is required to undergo an internship. It is considered a graded module that is necessary for program completion. Students who wish to free up more time for their final year may choose to take their internships during their advanced diploma year.

Internships are not open exclusively for college students, so competition for placements can be a challenge. The best way to stay ahead of competition is to have as much exposure to your field of study. For a fashion marketer, skills in trend-spotting, fashion styling, and a sharp business sense will take you far.

No one can really predict with accuracy the kind of experiences you can get from an internship. Possibilities and probabilities are endless. Unless of course, you have field contacts who can give you insider stories. Because of this uncertainty, some students look forward to it while some dread it.

Enrolling into a fashion marketing course is an ideal way to qualify you for the job. And build your portfolio too. A good fashion school will be able to provide professional guidance for your skill development. Not to mention, school is a great place to make new friends and learn from mistakes. Failure on the job

can be costly. Fashion marketing students at Raffles, including our college in Sydney, learn about the industry though a balance of theory and practical classes. To make classes interesting, students are taken on course-related field trips to places like fashion shows, exhibitions, or boutiques. This ensures maximum immersion and exposure for students to develop realistic ideals on what fashion marketing professionals should be like. For Michelle, the Fashion Marketing course at Raffles helped her to achieve direction in her career, “The highlight of the course was interacting with various design students and going on a variety of excursions that defined my career direction and laid the groundwork to achieving success in the industry.” After Graduation With her knowledge and experience in the fashion industry, Michelle plans to tap into the luxury fashion market, “This year, I am in the process of launching a premiere online fashion boutique in New Zealand stocking luxury Australian and International labels – something I never thought possible without the support and knowledge learned at Raffles and the industry contacts passed on by Robert.” Look out for her works at Mishka Boutique! http://www.mishka.co.nz/
