Winter break for students
Dear Parents, This edition of SummaRISe celebrates the events that have enriched our curriculum in November, including one national event, two Innovents competitions, charitable work supporting our community, art, cultural and sporting achievements and individual examples of excellence. Congratulations to all of the students featured and all those who took part in these events. I would like to thank all of the RIS parents who supported the school during our recent DSIB inspection by responding to the parent survey, and/or attending meetings with the inspection team. DSIB takes the parent survey very seriously, as they should, because the impact of much of what we do as part of school improvement must be evident on your children’s progress at school and should be evident to you. DSIB also evaluate parental engagement with the school and the number of parent responses is an important indicator of that engagement. Thank you for taking the time to complete this. During inspection, the visiting team observed learning flourishing in FS, and a vastly improving school with very good policies and practices throughout. Their full report will be published in 2019 and this will be shared with the RIS community in full. There are areas of the school they would like to see us develop, including the careers service and the upgrading of some facilities, and we will take those recommendations on board and act on them immediately. Overall, the outcomes were very positive. One further area of concern for us remains student safety at drop off. The area in front of the main school entrance (Gate 1) is not a drop off point for students arriving by car at the start of the day. There is a dedicated area for this at the rear of the school, away from the main road. It is a major concern for us that parents are dropping children at the side of the main road and expecting them to cross a public road, often weaving around other cars doing the same thing. We have acted on this to prevent the practice in front of the gates and subsequently, parents have continued to do this but further up the street. This is not safe and may result in the total closure of the front gates in the morning, significantly impacting the small number of children living in front of the school who do safely walk to school and cross the street with full visibility, accompanied by our security staff. Finally, as we look towards the coming weeks, a reminder that the last day of school this term is Thursday 13 December. There will be some special events during the last week of term and learning will continue around them so please ensure your child’s attendance right to the last day. School will finish at 2:35/2:40 on 13th as normal. RIS teacher CCAs finish on Thursday 6th December. Thank you once again for your support this term, I hope you enjoy this edition of SummaRISe and don’t forget there is much more available to see on the RIS Facebook and Twitter feeds. Sincerely, Tim Richardson Principal
