About the event Gabii sa Kabilin (GSK) or Night of Heritage is a special annual event, where people visit museums and heritage sites in one night. From 6 pm to midnight, guests enjoy cultural shows, exhibits, children’s activities, contests, food fairs and other activities. To get to the participating sites, guests walk or ride buses and tartanillas (horse-drawn carriages). GSK is an adaptation of Germany’s Lange Nacht der Museen or Long Night of the Museums, which has become an anticipated event in more than 120 cities in Europe and South America. Cebu launched the first Gabii sa Kabilin in 2007 and has remained the only metropolis in the Asia-Pacific region to hold such an event. Gabii sa Kabilin is held every last Friday of May to celebrate the Philippines’ National Heritage Month and International Museum Day, which falls on May 18. From three museums in its first run, Gabii sa Kabilin has expanded to 33 participating museums and heritage sites and 30 featured sites this year. In 2012 the Cebu City Council, through an ordinance, designated every last Friday of May as Gabii sa Kabilin. The event is initiated by the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation, Inc. (RAFI) Culture & Heritage Unit. It is made possible through the cooperation of participating museums and heritage sites, government agencies, local communities and private organizations. This year Gabii sa Kabilin will take place on May 31, 2013.
Tour Mechanics Guests use the Gabii sa Kabilin ticket to gain admission to sites listed in this guide that they select to visit during the event. They may go to as many sites as they want. They can also use it to get free unlimited rides in Gabii sa Kabilin buses and tartanillas (horsedrawn carriages). The ticket is worth P150. It is only valid for use on May 31, 2013 from 6pm to 12 mn. Children age seven and under, accompanied by adults, get free admission and rides. The City Walk segment of the event covers participating and featured sites in Cebu City’s downtown district. Shuttle buses connect the downtown district to museums and heritage sites in other areas. Programs and activities of museums and their schedules are subject to change without prior notice. For museums with limited capacities due to space and safety restrictions, admission of guests will be regulated. Museums and heritage sites are responsible for the descriptions and programs listed in this guide.

MESSAGE Outside the four walls of the classroom and beyond the pages of history books, museums tell best the story of our nation, our world, and perhaps the entire humanity. As repositories of objects with cultural, religious, scientific, and historical importance, they have the ability to impart cultural education effectively and play an important role in the development of society. Likewise, our historico-cultural resources serve as attraction to tourists, who in turn provide economic returns and leverage for safeguarding such invaluable assets. For the past years, the Department of Tourism has been working closely with the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc., (RAFI), together with the growing list of participating museums and art galleries in Cebu City, for the Gabii sa Kabilin program which intends to jumpstart local interest in art and culture. The challenge for all of us is to turn our historical and cultural museums and structures into exciting destinations of the 21st century—a place where scholars, writers, teachers, artists, students and people from all walks of life converge for continued search for knowledge. Our vision is a Filipino nation united and empowered by a deep sense of pride in its own identity and cultural heritage. My warmest felicitations to the people behind this initiative. Thank you for helping us keep the rich culture and heritage of our nation alive. Mabuhay!
