The Namatjira Collection To celebrate the era of Albert Namatjira (1950’s) the Ngurratjuta Iltja Ntjarra / Many Hands Art Centre and The Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education have created limited edition fashion garments. This is the first time that the Ngurratjuta artists designs have been printed onto fabric. “With this project our aim is to create landscapes of our country in the traditional watercolour style and exhibit them as unique three dimensional wearable works of art.” The artists: Hubert Pareroultja, Kwementyaye (Peter) Taylor, Gloria Pannka, Lenie Namatjira, Mervyn Rubuntja & Kevin Namatjira each painted a large circular watercolour on paper. Using these designs, eight limited edition circle skirts were produced. The watercolours were scanned using LuxLab facilities and then digitally printed on fabric in North Carolina USA using Eco-friendly printing, and water-based inks. The printed fabric was then individually constructed into 50’s style circle skirts by seamstress, Bernice Bristow. The skirts will be custom made to order with a maximum edition of 10 (of each design).
