ES. What are your views on the digital trends in MICE Fareedaindustry?Cassumbhoy.
When I joined the MICE industry it was easy to see an industry ripe for digital transformation, with lots of legacy solutions in place. Whether it is at the operational level, or in marketing tactics, there is a lot of effort and investment happening in the MICE industry, but it is always worth asking – are we really transforming the way we do business? Or are we simply translating things into a digital format. In that regard, we have a long way to go. Especially when you think of the MICE industry is an industry of industries, we interact with all types of businesses, and the opportunities are all around us. ES. How can technology help the industry going forward?
Fareeda Cassumbhoy. In terms of Metaverse, as a ten-year trend, the applications are still taking shape in exciting new ways every day. One way to think of the metaverse is as a conceptual framework that enables more offline to online hybrid experiences – that is good for our industry which is increasingly shifting towards hybrid events….
Fareeda Cassumbhoy. Efficiency, agility, Data-Driven intelligence, improved experience The key to an enjoyable experience being customer-centric but only data-driven, deep customer understanding can allow agency and brands understand the What, How and Why, behind customer actions and help the great the best ‘When’ to deliver the most relevant brand activations that drive meaningful conversions. ES. What is your take on multiverse and its various dimensions that can align with our industry?
partner for exhibition & event services. A few years before I joined, our leadership was already sounding the call to Go Digital, but my role represents a formal and concerted effort towards Digital Transformation. The scope of the transformation includes building backbone infrastructure of the entire digital operations, develop digital products and services, design new Digital Business Models.

ES. What are some of your takeaways of virtual shows?
Pico has helped our clients create unforgettable in-person brand activations for half a century. The ingredients are the same and the focus on the individual remains no matter if it is offline, online or in the metaverse. What Metaverse brings is a chance to know the customer better, their tastes and interests -even before they know themselves- making each event more impactful not only to our clients but also to our customers. Metaverse is also where we want to bring our measurement capabilities into the future. Leveraging on the shift to virtual during the covid period
ESG is the need of the future. It is the trend that we see the world moving towards. As we see from Millennials to Gen Z, sustainability and our ability to survival have become increasingly the top concern from first to developing countries. There is a need to do meaningful ESG, not just making a brand statement, and ensure that ESG is not just the responsibility of one individual, one team or department but a program that touches all corners of not only PICO but also our client's business and industries.
translating their programmes and content into digital format. It was easy to see that people simply do not have the same stamina for screen time, and it is harder to engage compared to face-to-face. We slowly saw the durations decrease as organisers realised so-called online attendees are not actually paying attention at all. It has become more apparent when the audience is not engaged – or worse – that the organiser has not successfully found the right audience at all! Data and its impact on all aspects of experience deliver, such as measurement & programming, cannot be more apparent. However, we were also able to use data to verify to identify so common event best practices that stays true even beyond just virtual events. This allows us to create our Pico ExQ™ – The AI Accelerated Analytics Calculator ™ to provide relevant data insights such as: 1. Keeping agendas around 5 hours 2. September being best time for events 3. Online events tend to have better attendance at the mid of the week whereas in person events tend to increase in attendance as the weekend approaches ES. What dimensions can Data Analytics, CRM and ESG play in respect to virtual shows? Fareeda Cassumbhoy. The trap to avoid falling into is to think that – “more data = better insights”
Although the bar is higher for engagement, the data that is available is potentially more detailed, but it really comes down to Experience Design – if the organiser is not clear on who they trying to reach, and what they want that person to take away from the experience, then no amount of data can help.
I see this as part of general trend of brands moving away from attention to focusing the overall experience of the customer. Brands who are consistently focused on providing new value to their customers, rather than chasing the latest trend.
We are already seeing these trends today. Custom design virtual experiences that are designed for platforms like Zoom, using its native functions and interface design to create unique team bonding moments. On the other hand, the blending of the virtual and the physical such as the recent Australia Open NFT campaign, is creating a completely new way for the virtual audience to be engage.

CRM, with the emergence of blockchain and NFT (nonfungible tokens), is on the verge of a renaissance period. The 1:1 nature of the NFTs, it allows brands to access and engage their customers directly through their wallets. This will no doubt increase the quality and creativity of CRM content making CRM more personal and fulfilling for customers. All of this means that there will be an increasingly need for better data analytics for transparency, accountability, and ongoing ES.optimization.Whatare the big upcoming trends you foresee in the virtual events and something that has impressed you in this Fareedadomain?Cassumbhoy.
ES. What are the emerging opportunities and threats in MICE Fareedaindustry?Cassumbhoy.
With the growth of virtual events, our concept of ‘event’ is changing, online seminar to me seems like an outdated term, which may go away, like teleconference, and telecommuting. One can imagine the landscape threatened by disruption, but I prefer to see a new landscape of opportunities. Currently, anyone can organise an ‘event’, anyone can grow an audience. For instance, online learning platforms and content are much more engaging than the typical online seminar. What this means is that data analytics will become ever more important to understand not only what our customer are doing but how they are feeling – their entire experience with the brand. Therefore, I created the Pico ExQ ™ A.I. algorithm to measure the iQ of the experiences the PICO was creating for our clients. The biggest trend that I see facing the industry is complacency. As other sectors of advertising head turn more data and trackability, the MICE industry is still at is beginning stages of our transformation journey. However, as the end point and starting point of the customer journey, the MICE industry has the best potential to begin the crack the multi-dimensional layers of human experience.
ES. What message would you like to share with the industry? Fareeda Cassumbhoy. If you cannot measure, you cannot understand. If you cannot understand, you cannot improve. Experience Analytics is the key differentiator.

Manoj Thapa. To tell you the truth, I am an accidental hotelier. I was very keen to join Indian Army and did cleared my Combined Defence Service exam and went to Allahabad for SSB. Unfortunately, I couldn’t clear it because of knee injury. As destiny would prevail, through one of my father’s friend who was security officer in Hyatt, I got to know about JET training program in Hyatt Regency Delhi. I did my one and a half years training with them and continued working for twelve years reaching the designation of banquet sales Whilemanager.Iworked in Hyatt, I experienced the very essence of hospitality. I think since then I got attracted towards the hotels and finally ended up as a hospitality professional. Today, I have over 35 years’ experience in the industry and in this long span of time I should say that I am fortunate enough to get ample opportunities to work with major hotel brands including four years at The Claridges Hotel and Resort New Delhi, three years at Svelte Hotels and To Manoj Thapa, General Manager, Nest Jaipur

ES. Are there any fascinating tidbits about the hotel that you could share? Maybe some background information? Have there been any special events on the property? Manoj Thapa. Nest Jaipur is a modern property with a tinge of royal Rajasthani architecture. Aiming to impress the visitors from the point they enter the property, we kept a vast 9 acre open before they stepped in the lobby. The wide open space at lobby cum reception is designed to make our guests feel that they are at the perfect place for vacation, staycation or an event. The strategically arranged modern furniture in classy pink settings is targeted to make the space comfortable for casual and semi-formal meetings. Darpan, the spectacular gathering space of the property, inspired by Abhaneri Stepwell is adorned with 18000 pieces of mirror which reflect the top and give a feel of a stepwell. Since the very day of the inception, the hotel witnessed many mega events such as destination weddings and corporate events. In one of the corporate event in the month of June, cricketer Piyush Chawla and Bollywood star Suniel Shetty marked their presence and even tried few shots on the field.
ES. How are hotels maximizing the opportunities now that travel is back? Manoj Thapa. Hospitality is all about special experiences which create great memories. A hotel should be capable of catering its guests with such experience as they want their hotel to be an escape into another world with luxe ambience, comfy stay, delectable food, personalised service and unforgettable memories. We at Nest Jaipur are closely working with our marketing team to highlight the premium services with luxury stay we are offering to our customers in their regular communication to visitors and on social media. For offline marketing strategy, we are engaging with a lot of travel agents, event planners, and wedding planners along with participation in major travel and hospitality events. As social media and online reputation is equally important, we stay active on facebook and insta with our lucrative offers and services. In addition to regular practices, we are also reaching out to social media influencers like bloggers, youtubers, instagrammers, etc.
ES. In addition to guest behaviour evolving continuously, the pandemic has accelerated it. In the course of your experience with your guests, what behavioural changes have you observed?
Personal Suites New Delhi and five years at Four Points by Sheraton New Delhi at the airport. I took care of operations and standards, strategy and business growth, guest relations and community outreach while serving as the general manager of these hotel chains. I am a self-motivated person that keeps me going in every phase. I always prefer to have half an hour for contemplating the things I have in hand at both professional and personal level and accordingly act to execute. Also my disciplined lifestyle and being from an Army background supports me to excel by putting my full energy at work.
ES. Would you like to share any message with the industry? Manoj Thapa. Since we are in the hospitality sector, we should be committed to our guests and our prime focus should be on creating memorable experiences for them to retain them forever.
ES. What has been your approach to ensuring consistency when it comes to service? Manoj Thapa. We are in the business of serving guests where experience is the key. With acute competition around, the best way to set yourself apart is to offer unparalleled experience with consistency in service. Having said that, since you are dealing with human intervention, it is more often that the detailing falls through the crack and consistency erode. To avoid that, we ensure that we set our brand standards and ensure every individual go through it extensively. Staff training is beefed up at every level and wherever required, a cross exposure is enforced among support department. To ensure consistency each customer is treated like a loyal, long time valued guest in every interaction with the team. Standard operating procedures are followed in every task performed by the team member.
ES. How do you overcome the difficulty of planning and executing the events? Please share your experience on some of the events you've recently hosted at your venue. Manoj Thapa. I am an organised person by nature and that helps me a lot when I lead an event organising team. I personally meet with the guest to understand the requirements and strategize accordingly. Also we have all the essence required to meet the demands of guests like conference rooms, banquets, dedicated internet lines for conferences at a very economical pricing and high speed internet available in every corner of the hotel. Out of several destination weddings being hosted at our resort where many have shared their memorable experiences on trip advisor as well on our Instagram page, one specific incident was of Mr. Dipesh Mehta from Mumbai who actually came to book spill over rooms in our resort. However, he was so much impressed by the hospitality rendered to him and the eye for detail during the course of finalization that he shifted the entire groom side stay and functions in our hotel. Our team core value of constantly be present and active in establishing relationship played a major role.
ES. How do you balance work and leisure to be at the top of your Manojgame?Thapa.
ES. What novelties shall we be expecting at The Nest Jaipur Luxury Resort this year? Manoj Thapa. We will soon open our Bar along with a highend spa. The upcoming spa will be a 4000 sq. Ft. of complete rejuvenation space including a well-equipped fitness centre. Apart from all of this, our rooftop bar BARSAAT would be a state of the art restro-bar featuring remarkable interiors and some wide varieties of national and international brands. The work on the restro-bar is going on full swing and we are hopeful to open on fall of 2022.
Manoj Thapa. People are travelling a lot but with an alert in their minds. They are cautious and aware like never before and completely following new travelling norms. They are preferring hotels with contactless services, stringent safety protocols and a higher standard of operational excellence to ensure their safety.

Pallavi Mehra. There is a crying need to have more female in leadership positions in order to not only bridge the genderequality gap but also to enhance efficiency and productivity across industries. Studies have underlined that companies with female leadership at the top have performed better overall. It’s an established fact that women Head of States have tackled the pandemic situation better than their male counterparts. The general perception now is that women leaders are pragmatic and decisive with a clear vision.

ES. What are the benefits of having a more diverse workforce, especially in senior management positions?
ES. What were the key career experiences that really shaped the way you are now as a leader? Pallavi Mehra. There’s been some learning at every step of my career journey spanning over the last two decades. My first job at the airport working for United Airlines taught me how to be a resourceful individual in a challenging environment through customer service, working odd hours, handling unforeseen situations, keeping and maintain calm and most importantly, working as a team. Along the way, I have been fortunate to work with quite a few industry stalwarts and leaders who have corrected me, encourage me and inspired me, teaching me how to be fearless and resourceful, observant and learner, problem solver, deliver results and impacts and so much more.

ES. What have been some of the major milestones in your career? If you were able to share any of them with us, which ones would they be? Pallavi Mehra. The outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic and the consequent lockdowns and shutdowns, disruptions, mayhem and the logistical constraints everywhere where unprecedented. So was the total shutdown of economic activities globally. Never before did the world witness the total shutdowns of factories, industrial sectors, transports of every means. There was extraordinary confusion surrounding the resumption of businesses. Be an agent of change. The problems never solve on their own. Overcoming that hesitation and giving a restart to physical events and face to face meetings in early 2021 was so much bigger than what meets the eye. We were the first to do that paved the way to the resumptions of exhibitions and events, not only in the country but also globally. In March 2021, we executed buyer-seller meets for our Jewelry portfolio clients where we used the hotel rooms as exhibit area. We invited select buyers from the cities where these meets were conducted. This was followed by SATTE 2021 that was widely hailed as the first international standard travel expo to take place anywhere in the world. The show gave industry, stakeholders and businesses, trade, confidence to open to travel and tourism. The show galvanized the industry like never before, playing the role of catalyst in helping the industry overcome the pandemic induced challenges and garnering support from private sector stakeholders, industry bodies to Government of India. Almost all Indian states participated in the edition. Despite the absence of scheduled air travel, international destinations that could come, came. The footfall during the event days were overwhelming.
ES. On another note, we would like to know about your hobbies, what keeps you busy when you are away from work?
ES. What is the best part of your job?
Pallavi Mehra. Mt ‘me time’ is very important to me. It helps me rejuvenate and recharge. I also love to pamper myself once in a while, bury in a good fiction and spend time with friends over a nice meal or coffee.

ES. What is one of the hardest challenges that you’ve come up against and what did it teach you?
Interview August 2022
Pallavi Mehra. The havoc that Covid-19 pandemic created was extraordinary and unprecedented. It tested us as individual, as colleagues, as industry stakeholders, as leaders, and in so many more ways. Our decision to bring exhibitions and events back to venues in the midst of a raging pandemic was the hardest thing. But so was the industry response. It was equally unexpected and overwhelming. Cliched as it may sound, but it taught us in spirit and not just in letter, ‘When the going gets tough, the tough gets gets going.’ We, at Informa Markets in India, proved to be one hell of a team that gave the events and exhibition industry, across the globe, confidence to get back to physical shows sooner than

Regarding significant accomplishments made over the years: Early in my career, I was given the best outstanding performance & best employee award when I was tasked with leading, overseeing, and directing others on a significant project. And in another situation, I was assigned a supervisory position where I was expected to provide advice, assistance, and direction to other official leaders. This was a key turning point in my career and a learning opportunity for me. The most significant accomplishment of my career was to use strategic bidding to win some prestigious international conferences for India. In addition, I successfully completed an offshore project without any prior knowledge of the subject and received laurels from the management, and, most importantly, pushed myself to pick up the intricacies of the trade on my own.

Vibha OrganizationsBhatia. from all over the world are taking practical steps to connect with their customers, create more positive experiences, generate more value, deepen loyalty, and build long-term relationships for the future. While trade shows used to be primarily business events, they have evolved over time in tandem with changes in societal values. Instead of simply "going to do business," there is a stronger social component that is being augmented by digital technology. As a result, exhibitions are evolving alongside, rather than against, the online landscape. Therefore, I believe that digital technology has had a significant impact on how exhibitions are organised and accessed these days. Exhibitors, for example, no longer require a storage room full of leaflets and catalogues because product information can now be sent digitally. Making events sustainable has also become essential for success in today’s exhibition and conference industry. Today, the registration process for both delegates and participants for exhibitions has been completely revamped and made more sustainable,
Vibha Bhatia. It’s harder to think of an industry that serves as a better demonstration of the transformation society has undergone over the last two years than events and exhibitions. But the industry quickly adapted to the situation, and virtual events sprung up in their place. In fact, the way the industry adapted to the situation makes it stand out from others quite dramatically. However, organisers are eager to resume doing what they do best—bringing people together in one place to enjoy, celebrate, or learn about the things that are important to them—now that constraints on gathering in person have almost been lifted. Everyone is aware that something fundamental has changed, therefore it's fair to say that there isn't really a sense of things "going back to normal." And it is obvious that the industry's future will be greatly influenced by the lessons learnt from the pandemic. Even though virtual events have been great when it comes to maintaining connections during the pandemic, there’s certainly a keenness among event organisers and marketers, in general, to get back to organising in-person events. I think the exhibition market will expand more quickly and experience a pleasant qualitative shift in 2022 and beyond. The exhibition industry's trends are always changing, and they may change even more quickly in the future. In order to give customers or visitors the "Experience," the exhibition sector will increasingly adopt the newest trends and ES.technologies.Whatare the benefits of having a more diverse workforce, especially in senior management positions?
Vibha Bhatia. A diverse workforce has several advantagesincluding people from various backgrounds and perspectives can promote better decision-making, more innovation, and increased workplace engagement. Additionally, it might enhance a business's reputation and make it simpler to draw in top employees. Diverse workforces provide companies a competitive edge and help them perform better. This strategy can encourage innovation, boost creativity, and aid in business growth. Diversity of thought implies diversity of leadership. A management team of five people from various backgrounds, for example, has a better chance of developing ideas that cover a broader range than to a management team made up of only one category of individual (same age demographic, sex, background, etc.). Diversity entails different trails of thought as well as access to a wide range of cultural and personal experiences. This is also known as "thinking outside the box." A diverse workforce and management team prevents a company from becoming stuck in one way of thinking. Another advantage of diversity in leadership is that it improves relationships with employees. When they see themselves represented in leadership, most employees feel a stronger connection to their company. Vibha Bhatia My most difficult challenge to date was being asked to manage the accounts process as part of a company project in Sri Lanka (for one of Asia's largest apparel manufacturing companies) because the team leader in charge of the process had to leave the project in the middle. I was required to travel to Sri Lanka to map their AS IS AR and AP processes, and because I did not come from a financial background, it was difficult to understand the requirements and confirm the effort required. I hesitantly requested one of my senior colleagues for assistance. She was extremely helpful, kind and made me understand the fundamentals of the mapping process and methodology. She also gave me a few accounting books to read before I left for the site and made sure I had all the support I needed onsite through regular phone calls and emails. I consider myself extremely fortunate to have had her support and guidance. She exemplifies female leadership; she engaged with me by educating me on the subject, and I emerged victorious. Her name is Poonam Masand. She currently works as a Director for GENPACT India. This experience taught me that (a) one should never be afraid to ask for help and (b) anything is possible if you just put your mind to it and maintain a positive Eoutlook.S.What does a normal working day in your life look like? Please take us through the course of your day from the time you wake up till the time you retire to bed.
Vibha Bhatia. I start each day by going over my schedule to make sure any calls or meetings I have are top of mind and I get any prep work for those done first thing. Then, I usually answer my emails while I’m still fresh. This way, I can reply to clients and get everything organised at the start of the day. I then look over my to do list and get started on the projects that are my top priority. I spend most of my day taking stock of the projects. I find that I am most creative and happy in the morning, which is why I like to do my brainstorming and team follow ups right away. In the afternoon, I find I’m more social and high energy, so I channel that into connecting with clients. Usually, I’ll have two or three scheduled or unscheduled calls with clients for our exhibitions. Depending on what time I’m done with that, I usually spend the remainder of my day on focused work, whether that’s doing analyses of ongoing or completed projects or putting together proposals and presentations ES. What one piece of advice would you give any aspiring female business leaders reading this?

The programme brought together exhibition industry professionals for in depth discussions about their perspectives on addressing the critical agenda of increasing inclusivity and diversification in India's exhibition sector. The event also helped attendees understand the impact that female leaders can have on organisations, as well as the impact that leadership roles can have on the women who hold them. It also explored the distinct qualities that women leaders bring to the table, with the goal of developing initiatives to inspire future female leaders and raise industry awareness about intentional and unintentional bias during the recruitment and appraisal processes. The event also featured open and candid discussions on topics such as work/life balance, flexibility, resilience, burnout, fears, strengths, and failures, among others. We intend to host a number of similar events in the near future in order to engage, educate, and empower women in our industry.
Vibha Bhatia. First, decide what you want from your career and be specific and focused on how you intend to achieve it. You can't get what you want if you don't know what you want. Take some time to reflect on your own abilities and strengths. From there, devise a strategy for achieving your career goals Finally, keep in mind that no woman has ever achieved leadership without taking some risks. It's natural to be wary of what you don't understand or are unfamiliar with. However, don't let fear keep you from pursuing a great idea or objective. Don't be afraid to try something new or challenging!

Insights MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENTMESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT SUNIL MORE INDIAN EXIBITIONS, CONFERENCES & EVENTS SERVICES ASSOCIATION 38 | www.exhibi onshowcase.com Asia’s Most Comprehensive Media Pla orm For MICE August 2022
It is very heartening to see that the exhibitions and events industry is returning to normal with an enhanced pace. On a lighter side, my industry friends are finding it difficult to promote their services in their own industry events! Well friends, the start of my journey as IESA President was hit with a road block called the CoVid. I was just a few months into the Presidentship when it happened. And IESA had to direct its limited energies that it could extend to the Government bodies and people. We all felt that this period will end soon and believe me, many of us were planning events by the end of 2020. However, CoVid kept lingering for another year and still pops up here and there. If we recall, this industry has seen a lot of ups and downs during the past two or three decades. Two such tragic incidents apart from the recent CoVid pandemic, which came to my immediate mind are the aftermath of assassination of Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi and the terrorist attack on Mumbai, when the organisers of industry shows happening during those periods went through tremendous stress. Those two incidents affected a few organisers but CoVid was all encompassing in its effect on the industry. The times were different and the industry was not so big then. As an officer in the electrical industry Association, IEEMA, my first brush with the organisation of our exhibition, ELECRAMA in Godrej Complex, Mumbai was in the year 1990. It was then mandatory to get TFAI (now ITPO) approval for exhibition organisation and we got the same after assuring the then TFAI Chairman, late Mr Yunus Mohammed that we will organise the next Show in Pragati Maidan! It was a blessing in disguise since we could not have organised it in Mumbai due to riots in 1993. Delhi was calm though and we could organise ELECRAMA successfully in January 1993 in Delhi. From then, I was involved with each ELECRAMA Exhibition till the year 2012 and witnessed it grow from strength to Butstrength.Ivividly remember the meeting where the decision of the first ELECRAMA exhibition was announced in the IEEMA executive council meeting. Mr KK Nohria, then IEEMA President and MD of Crompton Greaves Ltd., before requesting members to participate, placed on the table, a cheque of Rs 5 lakhs from his company towards participation. The industry leaders were of a different breed then! And since then IEEMA followed the tradition of allotting space on priority based only on receipt of advance payment! As we all have witnessed, the industry has evolved over these years. The technology revolution - be it software solutions, communications or computerisation of systems - has played a significant role in organising and managing the events. In the Nineties, most of the work was done manually. Those days, we used to have a calligraphy artist for writing names on badges, certificates etc. The designs and creatives were done by the artists and even the hoardings and outdoor advertisements were painted. software tools are now available to design and print making life easy for the artist to fine tune the designs to the exact requirements of clients. Most of the planning and execution of the projects was done on paper. Over these years, various management softwares were developed for inviting, promoting, registering, thus streamlining the management processes. The stand construction industry also saw gradual change with pre-exhibition construction time shrinking from 8-10 days to 3-4 days. The industry had to graduate from on-site stand construction to modular and easy to build stands. The freight handling was a little difficult with trucks and other vehicles entering the exhibition halls then and it was difficult to convince exhibitors to use mechanised equipment like forklifts and cranes. Now all - organisers, exhibitors
as I mentioned earlier has played a great role in changing the face of the industry. Nowadays, data mining, data acquisition, exhibitors and visitors management, visitor tracing, feedback and post Show research etc are all done with the help of software solutions and apps. We have interactive software for making payments, selection of stalls and hybrid events. He computerisation and paperless operations during exhibitions has also helped in sustainability. Use of environment friendly products while constructing stalls, modular constructions, reusable stand designs etc help is on the rise. Coming back to IESA, we initially planned a lot of new activities like preparing industry standards, organising training programs, assisting members in taxation issues etc. However, with changed times and particularly looking at new initiatives by the Government, we at IESA will have to have a relook and start afresh. While the IESA leadership team is looking at the options, we feel a single decision which will make the industry vibrant is the Government recognising and giving it an Industry Status. We believe such status will help industry in getting attention of the Government in resolving its issues.
One more area of concern is the supporting infrastructure, which is not only lacking in 2 and 3 tier cities but even in large metropolises; be it roads, transport or labour. However, this industry has the capacity to rise through the ashes as it has demonstrated during the past couple of months. And I have complete faith in the industry that it will not look back.
ES. How do you view the relevance of sustainability in our industry. Is it important for a country like India to look at this aspect right now or it can be dealt with in future.. If yes, what can be Sunildone
ES. How do you see the role of technology in our industry Sunil More. Technology as I mentioned earlier has played a great role in changing the face of the industry. Nowadays, data mining, data acquisition, exhibitors and visitors management, visitor tracing, feedback and post Show research etc are all done with the help of software solutions and apps. We have interactive software for making payments, selection of stalls and hybrid events.
The event industry has a spiralling effect on the economy. The industry not only provides employment to people but supports travel, tourism and hotel industry apart from providing exchequer revenue through taxes. The Government therefore needs to look at the industry in totality and not in isolation. The industry status, if granted to the industry, can help in presenting a complete picture thereby helping the Government in evolving a policy for its development. Though this industry demand is pending for quite some time, the Government has taken a number of initiatives for all industries, which are also helping this industry. Some of them are; skill development programs, special assistance to MSMEs through loans, payments etc. The buoyancy in the Economy is also helping the industry.
More. The computerisation and paperless operations during exhibitions has also helped in sustainability. Use of environment friendly products while constructing stalls, modular constructions, reusable stand designs etc help is on the rise.
and service providers have realised that mechanisation is faster and cheaper. The power supply connection was a headache then as wires and cables were joined and taped. It took a long time to educate the contractors to use malefemale joints for connections, MCBs and ELCBs instead of iron clad switches etc. No functional exhibition halls were available then and most exhibitions took place in industrial shades where basic facilities like underground trenches for running cables, water and compressed air were missing. I remember we had to either lay them on the floor or take them 20 feet above. Even registration centers, food courts, clean and hygienic toilets etc. were nonexistent then. Today, we are fortunate to have good exhibition complexes like, new halls in Pragati Maidan, Delhi, BIEC in Bengaluru and IEML in Greater Noida to name a few, providing a world class experience to exhibitors and Technologyvisitors.
ES. If you have to give some advice to industry professionals on how to be successful in this industry, what would be those lines of wisdom?
ES. What are your upcoming plans Sunil More. As I said, IESA is having a relook at its services to find a niche for itself in the changing environment post CoVid. The leadership team is meeting shortly to deliberate on a way forward to service its membership.
Sunil More. This industry is way different from other industries and I am happy to see that a number of young people are joining this industry. There are a few specialisations arising with the changing needs and one can make a career here as an anchor, software specialist, creative artist, a sales guy, or an operations expert. The timelines are very stringent in this industry and timely delivery of products and services is of utmost importance. So my advice to my young friends is if you are sincere, hardworking and passionate about this industry, do join. You will find an umpteen number of people who have risen from ranks to lead their respective organisations with their passion to serve this industry

The most prominent are in the field of new technologies applied to the automotive industry and urban mobility, machine tools, medical equipment and health technologies, and security and emergency equipment, among others.
ira de Barcelona is making a strong entry into the Chinese trade fair market with the management of two international venues: Xuzhou Greenland Huaihai International Expo Center and Nanchang Greenland International Expo Center, thus reaffirming its strategy of expansion abroad by entering the Asian market, a strategic market for economic reactivation. It is doing so hand in hand with one of the world's leading construction companies with which it has signed a joint venture, Greenland – Fira, to design and promote fairgrounds in the country in the coming years. Thus, although Fira has previously coorganised a number of events in China and on the Asian continent, it will now be responsible for the commercial, technical, logistical and operational management of venues with a total exhibition area of around 240,000 m², which have been designed as key tools for the economic development of their cities and the region. The two facilities are back to holding trade fairs after the recent stoppage caused by a new wave of Covid in China and plan to organise around forty events this year. The first of these, the International Motor Trade Fair, held from 2 to 5 June in Nanchang, has joined the restart of fairs throughout the country, with efficient preventive measures. The 170,000 m² venue this year plans to hold 25 trade fairs, including the Laboratory Equipment and Material Exhibition (August), the National Traditional Chinese Medicine Exhibition and Conference and the International Exhibition of Communications and Electronics Industry (October), as well as the National Education Equipment and Technology Fair, considered one of the most important in China. The new Xuzhou venue, which will open at the end of 2021, has 66,000 m² of exhibition space and is expected to grow to 136,000 m² in future phases, and will host around fifteen trade fairs.

he Hong Kong Exhibition & Convention Industry Association (HKECIA) , has welcomed the decision of the HKSAR Government to reduce hotel quarantine for inbound travellers from seven to three days, followed by four days under medical surveillance at home. Reducing the number of days for hotel quarantine will help ease the burden on Hong Kong residents returning to the city and incoming international travellers. However, inbound visitors are not allowed to attend any exhibitions held in event premises, e.g. trade fairs, exhibitions, conferences, etc, during the four days of medical surveillance. The new arrangement and the reduction of number of days for hotel quarantine thus will make no difference for the exhibition industry. Mr Stuart Bailey, HKECIA appreciatesthecommented,Chairman,“WhileHKECIAGovernment’s direction of relaxing restrictions, our members and the exhibition and convention industry urge the Government to implement quarantine-free travel as soon as possible. During this interim period, we hope the Government to relax restrictions for business travellers and allow overseas exhibition organisers, exhibitors and buyers with the Amber Code to run and attend exhibitions at event premises with their face masks on and appropriate social distancing and preventive measures.”
