T

he world of Exhibitions is fascinating indeed! Go to any exhibition, and chances are you will come out learning new, interesting facts about the industry it caters to. Every exhibition houses some fabulous, eye catching booths, with names of representing brands leaving a lasting impression on the minds of the visitors. Exhibitions are in, when the goings are good. But exhibitions make even greater sense when there is a downturn and the business is struggling for fresh customers. That’s why I keep saying, the significance of exhibitions is quite misunderstood. It is like that unsung hero which comes to the rescue, quite unexpected. As a matter of fact, exhibitions are now capturing as much as 20% of annual marketing budgets of B2B companies. A word of caution though: Prepare well before exhibiting your brand. Understand the nuances of exhibiting effectively otherwise it will be of little use. The state of infrastructure, sadly, is disheartening. With the kind of cross-functional revenues it generates besides massive employment generation, the Indian Exhibition scenario looks ignored. China holds around ten times the number of exhibitions held in India. As a general trend observed, there has been a direct proportionate relationship between growth in Exhibition industry and the GDP of several economies across the world. Despite the challenges, the organizers are brave enough to put through and still be benefited. Besides, the number of exhibitions held annually is also increasing. It remains a fact that if proper infrastructure is promised, Indian Exhibitions can become world class& truly stimulating. Infrastructure here refers to amenities like Good Venues & convention centers, proper taxation guidelines and licensing rules, to name a few. In this issue we bring together a collage of issues relating to the exhibition industry. It’s an interesting mix of articles that will keep our readers absorbed all through. There are interesting bits on the new international shows. There is a ISO standard of Exhibition and we have talked about it. The case study revolves around in-depth analysis of the electronics industry. Our readers will get knowledge about the benefits of In-Premise marketing at the exhibition. Bangalore, as an inbound MICE destination is captured. We have poured some light on the significance of post event analysis and as usual the reviews of exhibitions held last month are also included. Happy Reading!

ELECTRONICS INDUSTRY

T

he electronics industry, especially meaning consumer electronics emerged in the 20th century and has now become a global industry worth billions of dollars. HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENTS: The Indian electronic industry has its origins to the year 1965 with an orientation towards space and defence technologies. This was rigidly controlled and initiated by the government. This was followed by developments in consumer electronics mainly with transistor radios, black and white TV's, calculators and other audio products. Colour television soon followed. 1982 was a significant year in the history of television in India when the government allowed thousands of colour TV sets to be imported in the country to coincide with the broadcast of Asian Games in Delhi. The period between 1984 and 1990 was the golden period for electronics during which the industry witnessed continuous and rapid growth. CURRENT SCINARIO: In recent years the industry is growing at a brisk pace. The demand in the Indian market is expected to touch $400 billion by 2020. The largest segment is consumer electronics segment. Under modified special incentive Package scheme , the government will provide up to Rs. 100 billion in benefits to the industry during the 12th five year plan (2012-2017). India's production constitutes only about 1.3 % of the global electronics hardware production of $1.7 trillion.

Hence it is miniscule by international comparison. However the demand in the Indian market is growing rapidly and investments are flowing in to the augment manufacturing capacity. The consumer electronics and durables industry is currently poised at about Rs. 340 billion. India is also an exporter of a vast range of electronic components and products for the following segments. • Display technologies • Entertainment Electronics • Optical Storage devices • Passive Components • Electro-mechanical components • Telecom Equipments • Transmission and signalling equipments • Semiconductor designing • Electronic manufacturing services(EMS) CHALLENGES IN THE INDUSTRY: Major challenges facing the Indian electronic manufacturing market are the infrastructure that needs to be improved at the earliest possible. There are also some problems that

ISO 25639:2008: International Standard for Exhibition Industry

A

n ISO standard was launchedto bring greater transparency and consistency to the exhibition industry worldwide by providing internationally agreed terminology and statistical methods, thus reducing the potential for misunderstanding and disappointments between organizers and exhibitors. ISO 25639 : 2008 was the first International Standard for exhibitions, shows, fairs and conventions. Highlights: ISO 25639 ensures conformity amongst all players in the industry. ISO 25639 thus aims to facilitate communication within the industry on the whole. By enabling industry members to provide more reliable and

structured data, the dissemination of this data becomes easier. It consists of two parts, respectively addressing exhibition terminology and statistical methods. ISO 25639-1: Exhibitions, shows, fairs and conventions –Includes terms and definitions often used in the exhibition industry. It is intended to facilitate a common and universal interpretation of this terminology, facilitating understanding between industry players. It is also intended to help improve professionalism and raise standards for the exhibition industry and to serve as a guideline for industry players to be more discerning with regard to the various statistical data released on

exhibitions. ISO 25639 -1 groups terms into four categories: • Individual and entity, which lists and classifies the various types of people involved in the exhibition industry • Type of event • Physical item, which describes the various components such as size of the exhibition, type of facility, associated print material etc. ISO 25639-2 : 2008 : Exhibitions, shows, fairs and conventions — Measurement procedures for statistical purposes, provides standard measurement procedures to increase confidence in statistics related to exhibitions.

Many national exhibition industry associations have used ISO 25639-1 and the Standard has gained international recognition and acceptance. The Global Association of the Exhibition Industry (UFI), a leading worldwide association for exhibition organizations, has aligned its terminology and measurement procedures according to ISO 25639. UFI, which represents 587 member organizations in 85 countries, said the Standard is a useful reference to clarify definitions with its stakeholders, especially those from outside the exhibitions industry..

AN ROI BOOSTER E

xhibitions are one of the best ways to get in front of your customers and prospects, but how do you decide which shows are best? How do you budget for them, how do you decide what kind of display you need, and how do you make sure you get back more than you put into it? Whether it’s exhibiting at an Exhibition or hosting a targeted gathering, what a company wants to achieve in terms of return on investment, or ROI, seems to influence its decision to take on either option or both. These targeted events allow us to build relationships and foster new ones in addition to creating an atmosphere that is beneficial for everyone who attends. Sponsors find new clients, attendees meet new suppliers and Exhibitors benefit through new sales and showcasing product. The advantage of tradeshows, and the reason we still do them, is the possibility to meet a lot of different customers in one place. Exhibitions continue to be a great way to get new customers as well as to see existing customers in person. Exhibiting companies need to do their part to make sure to get the ROI they need – participating in best “your

industry shows”, setting objectives clearly, taking the appropriate sized booths in relation to the goods they wish to show, staffing the booth with the best sales team and making sure that every minute the booth is open is spent actively courting prospective buyers with information that is meaningful to them.

T

he event is over and the guests have gone home. While you may be eager to put your planning documents and files away and move on, right after the event is the time to evaluate your success and discuss opportunities for future event improvement Act Soon After Your Event Memories of event details fade quickly in light of current issues and responsibilities, and staff &volunteers may change from year to year. Don’t wait too long to conduct an event download. If possible, hold a meeting the week after the event so that you can have your analysis and action plan completed within the month following your event. Prepare Financial Reports Achieving your fundraising goals is key to event success and you will want to know as soon as possible if you met your goals. If you are using an event software, a variety of reports are available to report on event expenses and revenue, and to what initiative the revenue can be attributed. If you’re not using a software, you may need to put your expenses and revenue numbers into a spreadsheet. Your financial reports will help you to evaluate your fundraising success by answering these questions: • Did we achieve/surpass our fundraising goal? • Did our expenses stay within budget? • What is our net revenue? • How does the revenue from this event compare to last year’s revenue? • Where did your revenue come from (sponsorships, ticket sales, Booth Sales, live auction, special Innovations, etc.)? Meet with Your Core Team Invite your staff, event committee, and most involved volunteers to a download meeting. Make sure you set aside enough time for discussion. Create an agenda prior to the meeting and set a productive tone where

candid feedback is encouraged. Cover every aspect of the event, being careful to note which topics hit nerves in a positive or negative way so you can keep the meeting upbeat. Topics to discuss: • Venue • Entertainment • Food and beverages • Timeline for communications, invitations, etc. • Invitations and other printed materials • Auction segments (silent, live, funda-cause, and item evaluation) • Table arrangements • Volunteer assignments • Registration • Check-out and cashiering • General event flow and timing • Opportunities for improvements • Successes and failures at the event Generating Solutions with the Event Team At the meeting, start taking the steps necessary for improving next year’s event. For every major stumbling block, brainstorm with the team, then delegate someone to use that input to generate a list of possible solutions.

Ask that person to research the issue, review the brainstorming ideas, and develop a plan of action. Finalize the evaluation To complete the evaluation process, make files or binder sections for the materials you have created, including: • Financial report • Evaluation meeting minutes • List of stumbling blocks and possible solutions • Interview notes • A copy of the survey to guests and a summary of responses you received Be sure to back up any electronic files (including your software database) to a disk or flash drive and pass them along as well. Event evaluation can be challenging but is essential to next year’s success. Using this process will give your next event a valuable boost.
