LATEST NEWS FROM THE WORLD OF TRADE ASSOCIATIONS

The year 2019, in a way, can also be termed as the year of acquisi ons in the Indian exhibi on industry. NuernbergMesse India, Messe Muenchen India, Messe Frankfurt, Reed Exhibi ons India and Messe Dusseldorf India were the frontrunners in the acquisi ons race. Domes c organisers who had built niche, industry focussed shows over the years, got a good deal for their hard-work, zeal and passion. Brand UBM was dissolved and Informa Markets in India emerged, though the UBM India leadership and core team remained unchanged. While other industry associa ons hosted their annual events, IESA did not have its annual India Expo Shop in 2019. In 2019, India came into the global exhibi on industry's limelight because of new venue development and capacity upgrada on of the exis ng exhibi on venues. The IICC project in Dwarka, New Delhi being managed by the Korean giant Kintex, the over Rs. 4000 Crores re-development of Praga Maidan into IECC, Special membrane coa ng of Hall 4 for rain immunity at Bombay Exhibi on Center, New Hall opening of BIEC, CIDCO's faceli in Navi Mumbai, Upgrada on at Hitex and a host of capacity upgrada on ini a ves by IEML, puts India on radar to host interna onal events of repute in the near future. In 2019 we also saw India Expo Mart (IEML) and Bombay Exhibi on Center star ng their own events and exhibi ons. With this development, most of the purpose-built exhibi on venues in India now have also become exhibi on organisers! For Jammu and Kashmir, 2019 was a year of massive changes with defining firsts and lasts. On October 31, Jammu and Kashmir transi oned from a state into two union territories -- Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. The move was in accordance with the Centre's August 5 announcement withdrawing the state's special status under Ar cle 370 and bifurca ng the state into union territories. With this development, we see the poten al of emergence of some MiCE centres & new events in these regions in 2020. As we move into the new year, we bring to you some predic ons about the Indian exhibi on trends in 2020: Sustainability – With growing pollu on, there will be a greater emphasis on sustainability in our industry. Exhibi on Venues will make genuine efforts to address this cause and they will have to lead from the front. At Exhibi on Showcase, we see a potent need to develop an alterna ve for flex brandings as

flex has irreversible nega ve effects for the environment. Although fabric is very expensive as compared to flex, but it is impera ve to discard the use of flex. Industry Associa ons, MNC organisers and Venues will have to take a lead here. Kudos to BIEC for having already taken a lead in this regard! Acquisi ons – Domes c organisers will benefit from the acquisi on culture in the industry. Those domes c organisers who have built their shows from scratch, have a personal connect & goodwill in their respec ve industry have be er prospects. Experien al – Exhibi ons will become more experien al. A endees will feel more informed and educated about the shows they are a ending. On floor ac va ons will rise and the exhibitors that will employ story telling through emo ons by use of latest gadgets will witness more conversions. Conferences & special events alongside exhibi ons will increase. Focused Events, New Topics – Shows on newer topics, niche industry will emerge. Even small tradeshows will have good poten al provided they know their target markets. Embracing The Tech – Organisers, Venues will embrace technology to pace ahead in the race. Use of social media, Ar ficial Intelligence, Big Data will be made to augment growth. Experience & Educa on –People with either proven experience (exper se) with passion or skilled in MiCE will be in top demand. People ma er most and good teams can make all the difference in our industry. Well, at Exhibi on Showcase also, we had a very even ul and exci ng year. We received a wonderful recogni on of being a sincere, authen c and independent voice of the Indian exhibi on industry by Messe Muenchen India. On a personal note, I received a special acknowledgement in 'India's Top Influen al Leaders in MiCE' awards. Some of our achievements in 2019 are: Exhibi on Showcase –We became Asia's most read magazine on exhibi ons. Our online news portal was accessed from subscribers across the globe. Our social media ac vity saw a steep rise and we made sure that we provide you the latest news through various new age pla orms like FB, Linkedin, Whatsapp and Youtube. We captured informa ve and engaging interviews of industry leaders and we also made hundreds of informa ve video capsules. We also reached global audiences through email newsle ers! We also launched a special ini a ve to promote the work of stall designers in India. Exhibi on Excellence Awards – The EEA ini a ve got much bigger and transpired into a mega ini a ve for the Indian exhibi on industry. EEA got unprecedented support from industry associa ons and government bodies. The landmark EEA2020 is set to reach even greater heights! At EEA2020, we have for the first me, incorporated award categories for the Corporate exhibitors. India MiCE Youth Forum – A special ini a ve to connect youth with the industry was launched in June 2019. The event was held in Amity University. Students from various colleges par cipated in two different contests and were also given the much needed awareness about the career prospects in MiCE industry. India Exhibi on Directory – The fourth edi on of the annual directory was published and circulated among the corporate, PSU's, policy makers and the stakeholders of the exhibi ons and events industry. The bookings for the India Exhibi on Directory 2020 are now open for PRINT + ONLINE pla orms. Exhibi on Industry Coffee Table Book – The annual Coffee Table Book showcases the champions of Indian exhibi on industry and is distributed at pres gious na onal and interna onal forums and presented to policy makers. The winners of EEA are highlighted in this book each year. MiCE Showcase – To promote the world of Business Tourism, a new magazine and online portal was launched in 2019. MiCE Showcase is distributed to PCO's, Tourism Boards, Corporate, Hospitality industry and MiCE industry stakeholders. Associa on PSU Buzz – A special tabloid was launched to promote the work of industry associa ons, trade bodies, professional associa ons and PSUs in India. This tabloid is distributed to policy makers, corporate, exhibi on organisers, event venues, PCO's, trade & professional associa ons in India. At Exhibi on Showcase, we already have a lot of upcoming ini a ves in 2020 and I thank you for your trust in us. We will con nue to serve the Indian exhibi on industry with passion & purpose in 2020. With this, I wish all our readers, adver sers and partners, a very happy, healthy and even ul new year 2020.

Exclusive Interview

Exhibi on Showcase talks to Mr. Sudeep Sarcar, CEO, India Expo Center & Mart At the time of going to the press news was also out that Sudeep Sarcar has been elected as the vice president of the Indian Exhibition Industry Association. Excerpts from the interview;

“We

are the only venue to have

hosted five of the eight largest associa on events in India and all set to host some of the biggest events in 2020, including ELECRAMA, AUTO EXPO - The Motor Show, IHGF, IGC

2020, India ITME and PRINTPACK etc.”

Exclusive Interview ES. At the outset, please accept our congratula ons for your recent accolades at various na onal level forums. Can you share what makes IEML excel in delivering excep onal level services? Sudeep. It is a ma er of enormous pride to receive the pres gious “Best stand-alone Conven on Centre Award 2017-18” from the Government of India. We have also received many more awards such as the “Brand Excellence in Hospitality Sector” from ABP News and The Exhibi on Excellence Awards. At IEML, we believe in sustainability and are consistently working towards achieving industry recogni on. For us, it has always been about teamwork with our listed service partners. We support our event organisers at each and every level through single point of communica on. We stress upon pre and post event services to gain trust of our clients.

ES. With an even ul year already, what are your upcoming plans ahead? Sudeep. We are the only venue to have hosted five of the eight largest associa on events in India and all set to host some of the biggest events to take place in 2020, ELECRAMA AUTO EXPO-The Motor Show IHGF PRINTPACK India ITME

Other Major Events CPhI & PMEC Renewable Energy India Expo ACREX

We have also successfully organized a series of our own events like the India Interna onal Hospitality Expo (IHE) and Ayuryog Expo. The year 2020 shall see the third edi on and second edi on respec vely of the above-men oned events. We are contributing to the exhibi on market with new ini a ves and events. Next year, we may even be able to host you in our very own hotel within our campus. ES. Gr. Noida is poised to become a key des na on. Can you throw some light on 'Des na on – Gr. Noida’? Sudeep. Greater Noida - integrated township is shaping up to be one of India's smartest ci es. India Expo Centre & Mart was built in the NCR's most modern urban development centre. This planned city is a fast-developing centre of a rac on. The city is well connected with metro and roads (8 Lane Expressway) with an abundance of green areas and fresh air. It is free from traffic conges on. Greater Noida already has five-star hotels and other facili es such as Shopping Centres, Deendayal Upadhyaya Ins tute of Archaeology, Buddh Interna onal Circuit and Golf Courses. There are more than 5,000 guest houses in the vicinity making it convenient for exhibi ons and visitors for affordable accommoda on. ES. With sustainability being the buzz word and rightly so, what can our industry do to be in sync with this cause? Sudeep. Combining all the ideas and buzz is not enough for the sustainability issue to move an inch. It requires innova on and challenge that asks for correct ac on and correct prac ces. The MICE industry must follow United Na on's global sustainability standards. All the venues should work towards the UN's Sustainable Development Goal. All the discharge from the venue, whether wet, recyclable or metals and plas c, must be reduced as it adds to the total levels of pollu on in the area in a ma er of days. ES. How can your venue support the sustainability theme? Sudeep. IEML is totally commi ed to long term environment sustainability and consistently strives to follow the environmental best prac ces of the industry. We comply with all applicable statutory requirements of UPPCB/MOEF and support the green ini a ve commi ed to the preserva on of environment. For instance, vermicompos ng and rainwater harves ng is a regular phenomenon at IEML. Within our facility we use ba ery driven vehicles and have 3.5 MW capacity roo op solar power. ES. Can you take us through the growth story of IEML in the recent two years? Sudeep. The last two years have been very encouraging for all of us in the events industry. We triumphantly hosted number of large events/conferences like ELECRAMA, AUTO EXPO - The Motor Show, IHGF, IGC 2020, India ITME, PRINTPACK, PETROTECH, COP14, RE-INVEST, INDIAPLAST etc. We took a bold step by se ng up ACTERM - Academy of Conven on, Trade Fair, Event Research & Management - the only ins tute to teach professional educa on in Trade Fair, Conference and Events, in 2018.

Exclusive Interview 2019 was a very busy period for India Expo Centre & Mart as we were fortunate to have hosted concurrently four events in the month of January. Revenue had increased by 27% in 2018-19 over the previous year. You would be glad to know that IEML now enjoys the status of “Event Organisers”category. We also received several awards and recogni ons like the “SATTE Ini a ve Recogni on Exhibi on Venue of the Year during - SATTE Awards 2019” by UBM India as well as “Best MICE Venue - 14th Annual Interna onal Hospitality India & Travel Awards - 2018” by DLK Publica ons Pvt Ltd among other awards. ES. What are your thoughts on domes c organisers and their concerns? Do you think there should be an associa on to voice their concerns? Sudeep. Domes c event organisers are mostly industry associa on and individual event organisers. The industry is s ll at its growth stage and therefore I believe if I compare them with global organisers then the domes c industry holds more growth poten al. Some tuning as per interna onal standards is desirable.

The domes c events are price compe ve and are partnering with industry associa ons and interna onal organisers to enhance the scale and quality. They are expanding to mul ple loca ons (including er 2 and 3 ci es). Domes c event sector is fragmented but highly promising and there is a need to address their issues at various pla orms.

Such prac ses are effec vely followed by other industry segments such as ICPB, IESA & EEMA through their local chapters. IEIA can play the same role but right now it is focussing on the much - needed interna onal alliances. We can have separate windows to quickly take up the domes c issues.

ES. What are your thoughts on Service Providers and their significance? There are independent associa ons working for them. What do you feel about this? Sudeep. One of the biggest reasons for our success is a strong bond with all our service partners. Being able to listen and act towards addressing their interests is very crucial in our business. At IEML, we have recognised IESA & EEMA members through special features such as entry access, parking and dedicated rooms with internet connec vity and emergency medical assistances etc. With the incremental increase of opera ons and expansions of our industry segment, a federa on is required to jointly address the concerns of the en re MICE industry. The travel segment already has one. Its me for us to act and create one of ours as well. This will help be er representa on to the authori es as compared to going solo. At IEML, we are se ng up an IEML advisory board to create deeper engagement with the stakeholders of the industry.

ES. As a venue that has now also started organising its own events, what do you feel about this new perspec ve? Does ge ng into the shoes of an organiser help you understand their requirements be er and hence raise your service standards? Sudeep. I totally agree with you on this point. Ge ng into the shoes of the organiser gives us be er understanding and planning of the issues in hand. That has always been the prac ce at IEML since Shri Rakesh Kumar, Chairman IEML is also the Director General of Exports Promo on Council of India, that organises the largest show on Handicra s and created India Expo Centre & Mart through Public Private Partnership model way back in 2004. ES. With many B2C events being organised at IEML successfully this year including spiritual discourses, what do you feel can be a ributed to the success of these events? Is it because of the be er connec vity now or just the sheer brilliance of this venue that draws crowd from far and wide? Sudeep. There are many factors that contribute to the success of events. For instance, event a endance is dependent on things like the nature of the event, followed by venue facili es, connec vity, marke ng & promo ons etc. in that order. Credit for connec vity must go to Noida Metro Rail Corp & the Greater Noida authority. Further IEML – A state-of-the-art facility has interna onal standard infrastructure suitable to both B2B and B2C type of events and forms our core competency. The sheer value of IEML services speak for itself and hence the success of any type of events organised at our venue. It is they - the “Event Organisers” who made the venue a success story. Full credit goes to them. ES. You sit on the board of IEIA as well as ICPB, what according to you can these associa ons do to make this industry prosper. What ma ers do you feel should be addressed and taken up to make the Indian exhibi on industry a be er place to work. Sudeep. I sit on the board of IEIA as well as ICPB in the capacity of both event organizer as well as a venue. Both these associa ons serve to connect the loop that forms the events sphere. They must act as a representa ve of the Indian MICE industry at domes c & interna onal events. I feel they should take forward industry grievances and proposals to the relevant government authori es. Both associa ons must fulfil their core objec ve of being a 'guiding force' of the industry and provide opportuni es to each industry player, whatever their area of work. I feel the associa ons organise networking pla orms among industry players, such events accelerate knowledge transfer and protect and promote common interests of members. While both associa ons research and provide industry reports annually to keep track of what is happening, I feel these must be more frequent, even quarterly, as this will allow us to adjust and cater be er to the issues that face us.

All interna onal organisers have atleast 1 of their events at BEC In the last 10 years we have tripled our revenue In the last 10 years we have doubled the number of exhibi ons at the campus 190+ annual events makes BEC the most ac ve campus in India

ES. BEC hosts events round the year. Can you please share what draws so many events at your venue? Krishna. BEC offers organisers a 3 fold advantage:1. SPACE - It is the largest air-condi oned exhibi on center and many exhibi on related facili es readily available within the campus. It also has one of the city's largest banquet halls. 2. FACILITIES - The facili es at BEC extend to a state-of-the art kitchen which can cater to any number and any type of cuisine required, to ample parking space in a city like Mumbai which makes BEC a sort a er venue. This allows for an organiser to concentrate on the task at hand because many of his requirements are taken care of. 3. LOCATION – located on the Western Express Highway and within a few km distance of both the domes c and interna onal airports with over ten 5-star hotels close by, BEC is conveniently located for organisers, exhibitors and visitors alike. Furthermore we look forward to the Metro playing another vital public transport value-add to our venue. ES. As BEC is the busiest MICE venue in this region, are you considering moderniza on of the venue at par with the other global venues of repute? Krishna. BEC certainly has plans to grow and modernise the venue. In a phased and planned manner the work has already begun. Over the last 2-3 years we have already added a new banquet hall, an 11000 sq mtrs pillar-less exhibi on hall. Construc on on another new hall will begin in 2020. We have also constructed a 23k sq modern kitchen to cater to all types of cuisines that our event organisers may require. In this step wise manner we will con nue to modernise the campus and keep in step with what our clients need and require. ES. As we understand that BEC is a part of Nesco and contributes but some part of your revenue stream. How much importance then, do you allocate to BEC or your event venue business? Do you think it is an important pillar for you? Krishna. Each of Nesco's ver cals is important and contributes to the overall growth of the company. BEC, is infact a very important and fast growing segment of Nesco and every effort is made in terms of man-power, modernisa on and growth of the ver cal to keep it relevant for its clients. Further, with BEC extending its facili es beyond just exhibi ons and opening up to B2C events,

socials, MICE and other avenues; there is immense poten al for growth and we certainly are assured of its growth. ES. According to you, what is the significance of exhibi ons and what role a venue like yours can play towards this cause? Krishna. Exhibi ons are the business backbone of any country. European countries and America have well recognised this very early on and the governments there give a lot of importance to these ac vi es. Asia is now beginning to emerge as a strong player in this area and of course has immense poten al. We have seen a significant growth in the number of exhibi ons in the country and on the Nesco campus and needless to say this will only grow as interna onal players eye Asia more and more; and the domes c market too con nues to grow. Venues like BEC have to and do recognise this poten al and our expansion plans are being made with the purpose to ease and help with this growth. We also recognise our role as exhibi on community members and will strive to find ways to assist organisers and other community players with facili es and support and be a strong part of this growth story. ES. As we understand that Mumbai is hit by torren al rains and it can have a nega ve impact on the exhibi ons, are you having some plans to tackle this issue? Krishna. In Mumbai, the concerns raised due to the rains are certainly major and need tackling from the highest government offices in the city. Because the whole city's infrastructure needs an overhaul to ease the daily problems faced during that season. But having said that, we at Nesco have decided to resize our en re drainage system including mechanical pumping systems to ensure that we are well equipped to combat the onslaught of water. ES. How are you looking to tackle the traffic issues Krishna. Traffic management is being handled with utmost care during all exhibi ons. This includes the need of collec ve efforts of the concerned authori es and local management. Events and exhibi ons in any area of this city will result in more than regular traffic movement and will have to be managed well from within the venue and from the outside by the authori es. We at Nesco recognise this concern and have closely been in touch with the traffic authori es to follow all rules laid out to effec vely manage the parking and vehicular movement. Addi onal efforts being taken are: Ÿ Dedicated parking areas within the Nesco Campus Ÿ Addi onal parking facility within the Nesco IT park area Ÿ Surrounded by Lodha Parking ground and SRPF Grounds that are used for parking Ÿ Addi onal area taken from Railway authori es to increase parking area during large format exhibi ons Ÿ Ge ng organisers to have a required number of traffic wardens to manage traffic Ÿ Having adequate staff for traffic movement around the exhibi on venue Ÿ Following local traffic authority instruc ons for effec ve traffic management

Change Is Unstoppable How Linkedin ‘Events For Planning’ And Greta Thunberg Might cha(llen)nge The Face Of Trade Shows & Events.

I

n the past two years, there have been many discussions about the future of exhibi ons. In today’s global social, poli cal and environmental uncertainty, governments and high authori es are no longer trusted to create condi ons of stability but directly pointed as the ones to blame. Global economic growth con nues to be weakened by rising trade barriers and increasing geopoli cal tensions worldwide. According to the IMF’s World Economic Outlook Reports, global growth is forecast at 3.0 percent for 2019, its lowest level since the financial crisis of 2008–09*. The outlook is not quite bright even for our industry. We can be sure, there will be cha(llen)nges. But how to prepare? Sustainability Considera on of sustainability and the green environment are cri cal if you want to be around in the near future. We are all aware of the alarming environmental state of our planet and everyone is more than ever involved in environmental protec on. Global major companies understood this progress fast and, on the whole, swear by sustainability. You can’t avoid it. The rising crowd around Greta Thunberg is testament to this. Show that you care. Ÿ

Ban plas c material in food & catering services (cutlery, cups, plates, straws, any plas c bags and wrappings, etc.). Not only will you preserve the environment, but you will also be highly acclaimed by the public. As an example, Germany adopted a return

60 | December | www.exhibi onshowcase.com

policy on plas c/ glass bo les a long me ago; when you purchase a drink in a bo le, you are charged for the bo le but will be refunded once you bring the bo le back. Ÿ Start waste sor ng. Provided that the city where your show is held has further waste recycling facili es, be sure to invest in bins for specific waste. Ÿ Think about how to replace stands and carpe ng for single use only, how to save on water and electricity and on other energy-related ma ers. Ÿ Support the environment and its regenera on. Install gardens or beehives on the top of your venue’s roofs. Some good examples to follow: Messe Munchen, comba ng the ex nc on of bees and Rai Amsterdam, where all electric power is from renewable energy. Digital innova on A lot has been said about digital innova on and how it simplifies tasks for you and your audience. AI is beginning to have a real impact on our produc vity and even though we can s ll not completely rely on it, its use is highly beneficial. Most of us will agree that the best in digital innova on is instantaneous connec vity. You can reach your audience everywhere and any me. Linkedin has recently launched a new feature called ‘Events for planning’, invi ng people to face-to-face mee ngs and events. You can now instantaneously create a physical appointment (events) with the person (people) on the other

end. Linkedin is owned by Microso and has the privilege of holding millions of useful data on ANY industry. They have a big advantage, their database is constantly updated by its own users. Imagine how easy it is for Linkedin to reach the crowd of their choice! When we are s ll struggling to get to new accounts, for Linkedin it’s a ma er of an algorithm. Have you ever thought of Linkedin organising its own events, invi ng the top of the top specialists on any given subject? Would you consider this par cular online social media as an offline poten al threat to our industry? When I graduated in 2007, Kodak asked me for an interview in their Paris offices. I remember how amazed I was seeing the tall building of around 40 floors situated in the busy part of Paris, near Gare de Lyon. They greeted me with a warm smile but I could hear a great regret in their voices, telling me that not so long ago, the whole building was only for Kodak employees. With the widespread use of digital cameras, they now owned only one single floor. There is no need to men on what happened to digital cameras next and some stories about mobile phones. Inspira on Don’t stay with your crowd, get inspired by others. Look around and see what other industries are doing. Hire mo vated people from outside the industry, they can learn from and they will teach you. In the end, events, trade shows and exhibi ons: it’s all about people doing business when mee ng face-to-face.
