News Buzz Digital technology will boost administrative revolution to give a fillip to growth : Amitabh Kant Mr. Amitabh Kant, CEO, NITI Aayog, while addressing an interactive meeting on 'The Business of Government: Learnings from Global Experiences’

T

he quiet administrative revolution that has been taking place in the country during the last two years will receive a shot in the arm by the increasing use of digital technology which in turn will give a fillip to growth. This was stated by Mr. Amitabh Kant, CEO, NITI Aayog, while addressing an interactive meeting on 'The Business of Government: Learnings from Global Experiences', organized by FICCI with the support of NITI Aayog, Bharti Institute of Public Policy of ISB and the IBM Center for The Business of Government on 11th May, 2017. Mr. Kant enumerated the various initiatives of the government to change the 19th century mindsets, where archaic rules and regulations were the order of the day and move into the 21st century through vast and transformative decisions. He said the government has moved away from inputs and processes to focus on outcome targets of various ministries. Outcomes are now monitored regularly through a dashboard, an IT user interface, created by NITI Aayog. Any deviations from the assigned outcome targets are brought to the notice of the PMO, which then suggests appropriate remedial steps. Mr. Kant said that the government has leveraged technology to link up all

States with the Centre through 'PRAGATI' (Pro-Active Governance and Timely Implementation), an integrative and interactive platform for addressing the common man's grievances and monitoring important programmes and projects. Under this initiative, the Prime Minister links up with all Chief Secretaries of States and Indian ambassadors overseas to monitor projects online once every fortnight. This initiative, he added, was breaking all walls between the States and the Centre. He cited the example of the speedy approvals accorded to 191 of 197 railway projects for the States. He said that India was passing through the biggest technological revolution which will make data analytics critical for delivery of service to the people. Leakages in government schemes are now vanishing and in due course all benefits provided by the government will go straight to the intended beneficiary's account. Mr. Sidharth Birla, Past President, FICCI, in his address, pointed out that the platform was organized to engage with the Government's administrative machinery to discuss best practices in effective delivery and governance. For sustainable delivery and improved productivity and performance, there is an urgent need to build capacity in administrative

machinery. “We need to deepen appreciation of the urgency of implementation of administrative reforms. The opportunity cost of inaction needs to be highlighted as inefficiency of government is the single largest cost imposition on the nation,” he said. Prof. Rajendra Srivastava, Dean, Indian School of Business, said that it was the business of government to nurture and make commitments to human capital, be pro-active and forward looking, anticipate with speed and adjust to developments in the external environment. Above all, he said, there was a need for resolve to do the right things even if there was a personal cost. Mr. Daniel J. Chenok, Executive Director, IBM Centre for The Business of Government, in his remarks, said that the Center's mission was to do research and interact with academics across the world for determining actionable steps for citizens' engagement in the design, production and delivery of public services. He said in the last two decades, the Centre has interviewed 600 government leaders in the US and the rest of the world and produced 350 reports. Academics worldwide use the Center's research to teach and added that the Center would continue its collaboration with the NITI Aayog, ISB and FICCI. 21 . www.exhibitionshowcase.com

Interview

Mr. Vivek Shukla Director (Marketing & Projects) – Afairs Exhibitions & Media Pvt. Ltd. Q. Please tell us about the Admissions Fair? A. Admissions fair which was organized for the third time in New Delhi in Pragati Maidan has now become an annual event and large no of students specially class 12 appeared students. Under one roof they get to meet relevant universities and college not only from Delhi/NCR but various other parts of India like Mumbai, Puna, Banglore and Jaipur and many other places. The fair is a one stop solution for gathering information about various undergraduate and post graduate programmes and they also get to meet the renowned career counselors to get right guidance which are non biased and transparent. Q. What were the highlights of the show? A. We had invited India's renowned career counselors like Praveen Malhotra, Pratik Bhargav and Mahesh Sharma who helped class 12th students to understand the journey and process when it comes to enrolling into a college. Besides, there were interesting zones created where the students and parents could engage in discussions with the experts. One of those was Career Café, to give a very relaxed kind of feel to the students and to convey to them that career can be discussed and decided over a cup of coffee too. At Career Cafe, each table was kept for a specific career field (law, media, engineering, medical and many others) and you could go up to the career table of your choice and talk to experts over a coffee. This is to change the approach people have towards education because we are dealing with youth and they very sensitive and emotional. Q. How has admissions Fair evolved through the years? A. Afairs Exhibitions was started in 1995. Ever since then, we have only been doing education-related shows. We knew that education is one of the most important segments so we

explored this options. Now, we do around 56 exhibitions in India and around 19 exhibitions overseas throughout the year. We have another major show called the Great India Education Fair. This show is aimed at driving foreign students to India, showcasing our country's strength in education to overseas market such as South Korea, Thailand, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and many others. These are the areas we are already operating in. Q. Not many trade show organizers are into Education – related shows. Why does this field interest Afairs Exhibitions so much? A. Education is very dynamic and this excites us. Every year is a learning year for us as we keep on introducing new brand of programs. But the best part is that every year you get fresh students who are appearing in class 12th. So our consumers are young. They are open to explore and consider different options. Their enthusiasm and excitement has made our journey of over 20 years so smooth. Q Do you also promote government education schemes through your fairs? A. At present we are not promoting any government scheme for education. Its a private initiative supported by semi-government and public universities. As far as government is concerned, I feel that they can seriously take a call on this because at the end of the day we are showcasing India in front of thee other foreign countries. And when students from abroad come to study in India, a lot of foreign currency reaches India. So if government supports such initiatives then Trade Show Organisers like us would be able to take greater responsibilities. Q. Where do you see India when it comes to Educational Trade Shows organised globally? A. India is such a destination that it

can not be ignored anymore when it comes to trade or even education because we have a unique kind of cultural diversity and because we are a knowledge-based economy. Enough we have gone to various countries like UK, USA, Russia, etc. to persue education. Now its time for us to have students coming from other countries to study. With the efforts of various private players, now we are equipped with great infrastructure, facilities and well established world class universities in India be it Asoka University or OP Jindal University or Shiv Nadar University. A lot of Chinese and Thai students have already been coming to India to study. These people get a lot of exposure studying here. Q. What is next for Afairs Exhibitions? A. After doing so many education fairs our company has got into various international business consulting space. Taking it forward, we want to enhance their experience when it comes to delivery of education or a class room environment between teacher and student. Today every one is looking for experience that is the reason why people now prefer going to a multiplex than a cinema hall because the experience of watching a movie is important. Similarly, universities are also building good infrastructure to give the students the finest environment which is very conducive. This helps them to get better engaged with the environment which will inturn lead to better productivity. 25 . www.exhibitionshowcase.com

discussions that had raised several questions on the righteousness of the decision to bring down three 'heritage buildings' including the Hall of Nations, the Hall of Industries and the Nehru Pavilion at Pragati Maidan and all the scepticism about whether the project will be able to reach its completion on the proposed time i.e. 2019, this press meet has re-enforced people's trust on India's one of the first and leading trade show venue ITPO and on one of the most efficient reconstruction and town planning experts NBCC.

Amidst all the debates and

Interview

Mr. Anoop Kumar Mittal CMD – NBCC Q. In your opinion, what is the significance of Exhibition Industry in India? A. I feel that our country, unlike European countries, lacks the realization of the fact that Exhibition Industry is actually important for the economy's growth. For a country with population of 1.300 billion, we have only a few good venue facilities to conduct these shows. We need more world class Exhibition and Convention Centres. The redevelopment of Pragati Maidan venue is our small attempt in achieving this goal. This is just a beginning and I am sure that once this project gets completed, it will open avenues for other cities also. Q. Kindly elaborate on the Pragati Maidan venue redevelopment project. A. We are currently working on the project of redevelopment of Pragati Maidan venue in which 7000pax Convention Centre and Exhibition Centre of 12lack sqm in seven buildings. All the buildings will be

centrally air conditioned. There will be 5-6 Amphitheatres ranging from 1,000pax to 3,000pax. The entire complex will be developed into a Green Complex. The project is aimed to be completed in 2years time i.e. by 2019 and the total cost involved is 2200Crore. Q. How challenging a project is Pragati Maidan redevelopment for NBCC? A. Every redevelopment project is unique and has its own challenges. The challenges involved in such projects vary from getting the venue vacated from its current occupants to dismantling the existing structure. For any project, including Pragati Maidan, the dismantling phase is usually the most challenging one. This phase itself comes with numerous challenges because these projects are generally implemented on very old structures or buildings and therefore we don't have access to their architectural plan or details about the material that has been used.

Q. Apart from this project, what are the other projects that NBCC is looking forward to? A. There are a number of redevelopment projects that NBCC is undertaking for the Government of India and State Governments. In New Delhi, there are seven colonies that we are re-doing including Naroji Naga, Netaji Nagar and Sarojini Nagar. Apart from this, we are also handling a redevelopment project in Agartala and few other State Governments like Rajasthan is in discussion with NBCC. Q. What is the need of redeveloping a venue? A. Every constructed structure has a life span after which the structure weakens and becomes unsafe for further use. All the building that go a redevelopment process are either the ones that were constructed many years ago or has gone outdated in terms of architectural design and technology. Thus these buildings have to be redeveloped to ensure safety and to keep in pace with the changing times. 27 . www.exhibitionshowcase.com

Many feel that the show could have done better if the organisers had done some effective marketing. Few other believe that the current situation of the Power Market is not very good which is being reflected on this show too. "The show is good but we feel that that organisers should give clear instructions to the exhibitors about how should we go about right from entering the venue." - Ms. Lisa Cai, JET Inc. "We have been participating in Power-Gen from past 4 years and I am seeing the show shrinking each year." - Mr. Dharmendra Chauhan, Dy. Looking at the history of participation it is clear that the show had managed to win the loyalty of its exhibitors in the past as many of them have been associated with the show for more than 8-10 years. But, probably because of the difficulties facing power sector and due to the lack of some marketing strategies the show is not losing its loyal exhibitors. But hopes are still high for the coming editions as both the Organiser are leaders in organising trade shows in this sector.

Mr. Avnish Seth, Exhibition Director Interads Exhibitions Pvt. Ltd. Q. Would you please briefly tell about the show - Power Gen. A. Power- Gen has completed its 21st year and this was the 13th edition in a row. The show had around 160 exhibitors. There were companies dealing with heat exchangers, boilers, turbines and manufacturers of valves, pumps, etc. This is supposed to be the world's largest brand in the industry of Power Generation, Distribution and Transmission. We have been doing the show in Pragati Maidan from a very long time because this venue is the power – hub, plus it is favorable for good networking and connectivity.

Q. Can you throw some light on your company – Interads Exhibitions Pvt. Ltd.? A. Interads had started in 1996. In the beginning, the company used to organize only one show i.e. Power-Gen but now we have expanded upto 15 other shows out of which we have 8 to 10 annual shows mainly on infrastructure like water, railways, airport, oil and gas. Gradually we have entered the food industry also. Q. According to you, what is the relevance of exhibitions to the power industry in specific?

A. Exhibitions are a great platform for any company to project and showcase their work. For instance, if we consider Power-Gen, we invite all the major power plant players, independent, manufacturers, suppliers, distributors, and buyers of the industry. We also invite the key-decision makers who can inculcate and induce the industry related knowledge and awareness about latest technologies too. We provide them maximum networking and business meeting opportunities so that they can connect and grow their business.. And that's what exhibition are all about.

Drink Technology India Becomes an Annual Event as of 2017 Drink technology India is going to be organized for the first time in New Delhi at Pragati Maidan, from 26th -28th October, 2017 together with IndiaPack and Pacprocess India, formerly International PackTech India.

D

rink technology India, one of the fastest growing show for the beverage, dairy and liquidfood industry in India, is switching to an annual format and will be held at various locations in the future—every two years in Mumbai, and alternating between New Delhi and Bangalore in the years in between. The objective of these regional spin-offs is to address the beverage, dairy, liquid-food sectors and their respective packaging industries in a more demand-oriented manner. Alternating between Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore will make it possible to better address and support customers in specific target groups in the various regions of India.

Bhupinder Singh, CEO of Messe Muenchen India, is looking forward to this new challenge: "The foundation of the beverage industry in India is Mumbai, which is why dti will still be held here every two years. But in the years in between, we want to strengthen the presence and the range of attractions for our customers in India. Having dti alternate between New Delhi and Bangalore allows us to bring its know-how to all of India and address specific needs in different regions." Markus Kosak, Exhibition Director of drink technology India, feels that this

new configuration has plenty of advantages: "Moving into northern and southern India satisfies the best prerequisites for serving India's entire beverage, dairy and liquid-food industry. By continuing to develop this platform, not only are we giving our customers access to new potential, we are also making new networking opportunities available. In doing so, we give the beverage, dairy and liquidfood industry in India added value. The Indian subcontinent is still a dynamic growth market for the beverage, dairy and liquid-food industry. This growth is being driven by societal change and significant economic growth in India. 31 . www.exhibitionshowcase.com

India generates 1,00,000 metric tonnes of waste per day India alone generate more than 1,00,000 metric tonnes (MT) of solid waste every day, which is higher than many countries' total daily waste generation, Mr Y.S. Chowdary, Minister of State, Ministry of Science & Technology said at an ASSOCHAM event held in New Delhi.

Large metropolis such as Mumbai and Delhi generate around 9000 metric tonnes and 8300 metric tonnes of waste per day, respectively”. India suffers from inefficient and insufficient waste infrastructure and also from increasing rates of solid waste generation per capita. Issues of service quality and waste quantity need to be handled together. Besides, the infrastructure and technologies, we must also concede that we have not addressed the issue from a systemic perspective,” said Mr Chowdary while inaugurating an ASSOCHAM Conference on 5th National Conference & Awards on Waste to Wealth. He also said that the management of solid waste through collection, processing, transportation and disposal in India is the responsibility of urban local bodies (ULBs). ULBs are responsible for segregated waste collection, transporting waste in covered vehicle, processing, recyclables, separating domestic hazardous waste and disposing inert material in sanitary landfills. But most ULBs in India struggle to provide efficient waste management services due to financial problems, lack of infrastructure and technology, and a lack of involvement from the private sector and nongovernmental organisations. “We all generate waste and we want the government to handle the waste generated by us. When I say that, waste management is a totally public funded or government funded activity. This is not the case in many parts of the world. That has to change, as the burden can't be local government or urban local bodies,” said Mr.

Chowdary. Mr. Chowdary further said that the Indian government has taken up a number of initiatives to augment the country's waste management infrastructure. Under the Jawaharlal Nehru Renewal Mission, the government of India funded 49 solid waste management projects in various cities between 2006 and 2009. “Solid waste management was made a priority in the National Mission on Sustainable Habitat, which is a part of India's National Action Plan for Climate Change. At present, the Central government has been implementing Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, a cleanliness campaign emphasising waste management at different stages of generation, collection, and disposal”, added Mr. Chowdary. Another national level initiative aimed at improved waste management is the Smart Cities mission under which 100 cities will be provided with significant funding to improve civic services infrastructure. In smaller cities, the Central government has started a partner scheme, the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation, aimed at improving urban infrastructure. State governments also provide financial support to ULBs to

improve their waste management system under various schemes and programs. As a result of these initiatives, many Indian cities have taken steps towards implementing good solid waste management practices aimed at community-based waste segregation and collection, public-private partnerships and investments in modern technology. “It is high-time that we realize waste management is not only essential from a public welfare perspective. It can also contribute to economic growth, if the recycling industry is promoted alongside eco-industrial production. Such an integrated approach would put India at an advantage while managing its growing solid wastes”, pointed out Mr. Chowdary. We should work towards addressing the role of informal sector in solid waste management, and introducing economic instruments in waste management, said the Minister.

René Kamm, CEO of the MCH Group, will be the Chairman for the Summit. Work on the programme is already underway to deliver an attractive mix of sessions and networking opportunities. René Kamm, states: “It is a challenge to put together a great programme for such an event, but I am confident that, together with the UFI team, we will bring together just the right people for just the right topics.”

The Global CEO Summit is an invitation only event for CEOs and Clevel executives from international exhibition organisers and venue operators. The number of participants is capped to allow for an intimate atmosphere. The programme provides a mix of panels, interactive sessions, and a broad scope of networking opportunities.

after two joint editions, and continue to work with UFI as an event supporter. “It's been a unique journey to have this special partnership between tfconnect and UFI. But right now, there are so many exciting projects going on in tfconnect's business fields that we have to put our focus elsewhere – making it no longer possible to put the time and energy needed into the GCS”, says Trevor Foley, tfconnect Managing Director.” “We know the Summit is in excellent hands with the devoted UFI team, and we will continue to support the event. And, sorry all gossipers out there – No, we will not launch a parallel event instead”, Foley adds.

“We understand Trevor's decision, as we see how busy he is with his company. We are sad about tfconnect stepping down, but also very happy that our collaboration for the GCS will continue in a different form”

The numbers clearly indicate London's growing competitiveness as a global tech centre with more than 3,00,000 jobs and a £56 billion turnover. The figures were revealed in a study done by Airfinity, an event data provider.

Though the current total sponsor revenue is around £5 million, it could more than triple if these small and mid-sized events optimised their efforts to partner with the right sponsors.

But the analysis also reveals that the majority of events are free and they rely solely on sponsorship for revenue. Only around half of the events manage to secure monetary sponsorship. Sponsorship – in the provision of free food, drinks and venues – is popular as a model but both event organisers and sponsors fail to capture the maximum value of

Rasmus Bech Hansen, CEO and cofounder of Airfinity says: “Events are the heart of the tech community and this report shows that it is alive and kicking like never before. But there is still a lot of unfulfilled potential and the industry remains nascent. As an example, a myriad, of great events with attractive audiences go unsponsored. With no revenue, these

events are probably not sustainable long term. It's time for events and corporates to leverage the current momentum and take the tech event industry to the next level”.

his was another decade of great success for the association meetings sector. ICCA captured 12,212 rotating international association meetings taking place worldwide in 2016, which is clearly an all-time record for ICCA's annual snapshot of immediate past year's meetings data.

“More than five decades of doubling every ten years” Globally, the number of association meetings has doubled in a decade: from just under 6,000 in 2006 to over 12,000 in 2016. This means that the trend of exponential growth, as identified in ICCA's advocacy report “A modern history of international association meetings: 1963-2013”, published at ICCA's 50-year anniversary in 2013 (available on www.icca50.com). The market share of the Middle East region has grown even quicker: from 100 to 255 in a decade. This growth of over 250% is the largest for any region in the world. The estimated total number of participants in the Middle East has grown from just of 100,000 in 2007 to an average of almost 200,000 in the last 5 years. Most meetings were about medical sciences and technology. The amount of technological meeting is higher than in

other parts of the world ICCA opened its first first part-time Regional Office in the Middle East in 2013 and has deployed numerous activities to advance the association meetings market in the region. ICCA CEO Martin Sirk said: "This trends helps illustrate why ICCA took the strategic decision to open up a fulltime Regional Office in Dubai at the start of 2016. The association sector is taking off in the Middle East, driven by growth in an educated, professional middle class, a desire for professional education, standards and accreditations, and an understanding by international associations that this is a market of great long-term potential, both for growth in membership and for building business for their members based outside the region." ICCA is the global expert in international association meetings and has collected data on these meetings since 1963. For almost as long as there has been an international association meetings sector, ICCA has been there alongside, in all regions of the world, to observe and carefully record its growth. In the

world of international meetings, international comparison reports of other meetings market segments on a global scale are lacking. Most countries are still struggling to obtain even a partial picture of the current size and impact of this complex and fragmented industry. Due to lack of global figures on other meeting segments, they are often mistakenly perceived as the destination rankings for the meetings industry as a whole, even though they only cover a narrow segment of the total meetings market: To be included, meetings must be organized by associations, must be held on a regular basis, have at least 50 delegates, and rotate between at least three countries.

CEIR Publishes Second Attendee Floor Engagement Tactics Report

T

he Center for Exhibition Industry Research (CEIR) announced today the release of Part Two: Exhibitor Inbooth Tactics – Use of Exhibition Organizer Digital Tactics and Other Services, the second report in its newest series on attendee floor engagement. Exhibitors are the core of any exhibition and they are what draw attendees to the exhibition floor. The ability of exhibitors to attract qualified attendees to their booths and deliver attendees the engagement they seek can make or break the success of an event. To support exhibitor success in this area, issues to consider are: Which digital tactics do organizers make available to exhibitors to help them achieve in-booth engagement goals ? Ÿ Do exhibitors use them ? Ÿ Which of these digital tactics enjoy high attendee use ? Ÿ Which other organizer services are offered to exhibitors and used by them to help maximize attendee engagement ? Ÿ

This report provides answers to these questions, providing insight into what is offered and which are most popular. “Attendee engagement in an exhibit booth is a moment of truth,” said CEIR CEO Cathy Breden, CMP, CAE. “The ability for exhibitors and attendees to fulfill their engagement expectations influences interest in participating again in the future. It is critical that

organizers partner with their exhibitors and provide tools to help them succeed in this area. This report provides guidance for both organizers and exhibitors.” Results in this report indicate a gap between organizer digital tactic offerings and exhibitor usage. Is this gap a missed opportunity to maximize outcomes for exhibitors and attendees? Ninety-four percent of exhibition organizers offer an array of digital tactics while only 62 percent of exhibitors use one or more of these offerings. Exhibitor training is offered by a minority of organizers. It is a longstanding challenge for organizers to persuade exhibitors to participate and this study affirms low exhibitor usage. Given the critical role exhibitors play in impacting attendee satisfaction, experimenting with offering a variety of exhibitor training options is key. CEIR Senior Research Director Nancy Drapeau, PRC advocates, “Given that this research finds most exhibitors, 74 percent, train booth staff in-house, organizers need to think about creating exhibitor training tools that in-house trainers will want to integrate into their internal training activities. Perhaps incentives for exhibitors that take up the training opportunity is another way to increase participation.” This 22-page report inventories the most popular exhibition organizer digital tactics, which are most commonly offered, used by exhibitors and which of these are found to enjoy

high attendee use. It also inventories the array of other organizer services that help support exhibitor in-booth attendee engagement efforts. In addition to total results, this report identifies unique differences by exhibitor by industry sector, the extent of exhibition activity and other key demographics. Exhibition organizer differences are also reported by exhibition size and regional scope of exhibition participation.

Interestingly, each of these factors struck just when we were scheduled to have a show! We had to even cancel our show in Kolkata due to the overall situation facing the industry in the month of December last year. However, we wanted the sector to keep the faith and morale, and so we persevered with two of our biggest shows in Chennai and Kolkata within the first four months of this year, and we have turned it all around very strongly! The shows have garnered record-breaking performances in terms of exhibitor & visitor participation much to the surprise of the sector, and they have come all out in support of our events. There is a lot of takeaways here, in terms of the resilience and positivity that we displayed, and the professional and flawless manner in which the shows were executed in such a short time. We see various positive and innovative initiatives being taken by the industry players for upgrading and supporting each other. One can also see a major difference in the way trade shows are being organized now. This has grabbed the attention of even the International market, enabling them to see great business opportunities in India.

Q. How does UBM India see the Indian Exhibition Industry?

Q. In your opinion, what is the relevance of the Global Exhibitions Day and how are you planning to observe it?

A. It's been around 11 years since UBM entered the Indian Exhibition Industry.

A. June 7, which is being observed as the Global Exhibitions Day, is a big day

A. The Exhibition Excellence Awards is a much needed initiative and does make a difference to the industry because the Exhibitions & Conventions domain in India is yet to achieve industry status. While the importance of the Rs 10,000 Crore expo business has been comprehended by organizations and the government alike, there aren't many tools by which the innovations and excellence in the space can be measured or recognized. The show, which brings in an international renowned jury panel and is wellsupported by trade bodies is keenly contested, coveted, and closely observed by key stakeholders within the domain and beyond. “ Being a Chartered Accountant & with a degree in Law have helped in providing me a broad overview of Business decisions ” 47 . www.exhibitionshowcase.com

Exclusive Interview

Mr. Ganesh Kumar Murugan , Co-Founder & CEO 16Works Q. Our readers would like to know you closely, so kindly give us a brief introduction about you and the role you play in the company - 16Works. A. Let me introduce myself as a technoentrepreneur for the past 6 years with 16 Works. I have been in the software and technology business for 18 years now, working for some major conglomerates to start ups. It is all about the passion in building solutions and services brought me here to 16 Works. I am the CEO and the cofounder of 16 Works responsible in building the key technology stacks of the company and building a market presence for the platform globally. Q. When did you enter this industry? How has been the experience been so far? A. We started working in this industry from 2012. I have worked across multiple industries like banking, insurance, automotive and media but the challenges posed by this industry is really something that keeps you on your toes. It has been a fantastic learning experience for the past 5 years with every day being a new day for me and my team. This industry has some tremendous potential and talent which is not explored and recognized. We feel this is the right time to be part of this growing industry. Q. Kindly brief us about the history of your company, telling us about when was it established, what was the market scenario back then and major milestones it has crossed. A. We started this company in the year 2011 in Mumbai. Before we could get an office space, we had signed a project

from Spain, literally our first project was delivered working from home. Later we worked with few media and publishing houses in London, Paris and in the US before we actually started focusing in building some technology stacks for the exhibition business. It was only at 2013 we started providing full-fledged services and solutions to the exhibition industry. When we entered this market there were players who were already deep rooted in the industry providing relevant services, so getting an entry to work with an organizer was definitely a big challenge. It was at this juncture, India's leading exhibition organizer gave us an opportunity to work with them in one of their show. That became our first entry in to this industry and then there was no looking back, today we are a 50 member team with offices in Mumbai, New Delhi, Chennai and Hyderabad. IN the year 2015, we expanded our horizon to the global market by starting to work with clients from South East Asian geographies. Q. How does 16Works 'redefine experiences' through its services? A. Our continuous innovation in services and solutions have always been our USP within the market. Gone are the days where the organisers operated using traditional methods. Today organisers are more knowledgeable and also very open towards new innovation and experiences for visitors. This gives a better platform for us to innovate new technologies and services and redefine experiences of our customers. Q. Kindly tell us about the latest technologies you have introduced or

adopted in your work. A. Organisers have always worked with technology partners who provide bespoke or standalone solutions for specific requirements, there was never a need for an integrated solution for the exhibition industry. FINGOH – our proprietary technology platform is a 360 degree integrated solution that meets the demands and requirement of an organizer from all perspectives. There are multiple modules within Fingoh platform that can provide a seamless integration of data and information for the customer. Some of our modules include database management, online registration system, telecalling applications, project management, exhibitor manuals, sales and account management. Q. How does 16Works ensure the safety of its services in the age of cyber theft and data manipulation? A. Firstly we understand the confidentiality of data at the very core level. Before we implement systems to project, we make sure we educate our employees about the importance of data privacy and also data protection of customer data. Every employee within 16 Works sign a NDA with regards to data protection. Secondly with regards to the systems, our servers are hosted in a more secured hosted environment. Every customer has a private cloud to manage the data and information generated within an application. Our applications also restrict people from extracting data in any raw formats like excel sheets etc. Protection of customer data is the most critical component of our SLA with customers, so we take utmost importance in the protection of data. 48 . www.exhibitionshowcase.com

Exclusive Interview Q. Which all industries do you serve and who are your major clients? A. We work with few leading exhibition organisers in India, Singapore and also in UK. Due to privacy policies we are not supposed to disclose our client names and their projects. But we do work with some fantastic group of large corporations from UK, Europe, US and Singapore and also with their Indian offices, standalone companies who do large shows in India. Q. Would you please name a few major projects you have handled till now, elaborating on some of the most interesting or challenging projects out of them? A. I think most of our projects are interesting in its own way, few are exciting and challenging and few are very monotonous. In recent times we have built online pre-registration systems using payment gateway integrations for multiple clients. Back office application integration for some large exhibition organisers with multiple events under multiple market sectors. One of our key challenging project was to cleanse and build a database management system for a leading exhibition organizer in India. It took us 8 months for us to consolidate, cleanse and then structure a 5 million size database spread over thousands of excel sheets. After completion of this project the customer is very happy to get a complete insight and intelligence about their data. Q. Kindly take us through your course of day from the time you wake up to the time you go off to sleep. Please also share if you take out any time for recreation, hobbies, family. A. It is very important to follow a disciplined life style and routine to keep thoughts and action very positive. I have a very hectic travel schedule in a month, I prefer to travel by early morning flights so the day also starts very early for me during travel. I like to have a hot cup of lemonade with honey to start my day. I limit my time in

reading and responding to emails in a day through scheduled time slots, so that I'm not diverted by emails. My dad heads the finance, strategy and human resource at 16 Works, so my first discussion in the day starts with him. Most of our discussions are very casual and not very formal as we have a complete open office environment. In the evening, I like to spend some time playing few sports if time permits. I was used to the habit of working late in the nights, but off late for the past few years I'm practicing to hit the sack early. Weekends are mostly with family, it is very important for entrepreneurs to spend time with their families in the weekends as it keeps us refreshing and also sometimes kids teach us new lessons and thoughts to innovate. Q. What is your take on Global Exhibition Day? How are you planning to observe it this year? A. I think Global Exhibition Day is a fantastic initiative from UFI, I think initiatives like this will definitely bring a lot of attention to this industry. Last year on the same day we were busy on a set up, so had to celebrate it on the show floor, fortunately this year also we have an event coming up in Hyderabad during the same day. So we are happy that we will be celebrating GED17 on the set up days. Q. Your company had won an award in the 'Innovation In Services' Category at the Exhibition Excellence Awards 2017. How do you see this recognition? A. Well I would like to sincerely thank the jury for their consideration. I would like to dedicate this award to my team who had worked relentlessly for the past 3 years to bring us here. We are very proud of having some fantastic customers who gave us all the leverage to innovate and implement our products and services during their shows. Without their support it

wouldn't have been possible for us to be here. This award was not just because of a small group, there were a lot of support from our customers, vendors, competitors, industry friends and family members. Last not but not the least, we take this award as a lovely gift from the almighty. Q. What do you have to say about the Exhibition Excellence Awards initiative? A. It is a fantastic initiative done by exhibition showcase team, these kind of initiatives will create a great platform for companies to compete and innovate every year. We appreciate the fact that they have introduced awards not just for the organisers but also for the service providers like us to be recognized in the industry. It is now our responsibility to keep up the recognition and do better next year to make our presence more important and vivid. We will be very happy to participate in the coming years and will also appreciate the sincere effort of the team behind it.

Exclusive Interview

Mr. Dalvir Singh Nagi, Co-Founder The Flag Company Q. Please tell us about The Flag Company. A. The Flag Company was established in 2006. We are the largest flag banner in Stadium-merchandise and fabric advertisement manufacturers in India. This is basically called, 'Soft Signage' which means all our advertising is done using fabric and not flex. We stand by, Go Green – Go Fabric! In other countries, fabric is being used for advertisement instead of flex because its eco-friendly, UV protected and its colours don't fade. Q. Flag production is a niche market. What brought you here? A. Yes, Flag production is a niche market and it could be my passion for travelling that brought me into this market. Different flags – different countries and I can Identify the countries that I have been to by just seeing their respective flags. A lot of people don't notice flags but I find it really interesting. Initially when I had started off, I was the only player in this particular market. But now I have many competitors. Primarily, Chinese are my biggest competition and we also face certain competition from Indian manufacturers as well. But The Flag Company has been in the market for more than a decade now, so we can say that we are the market leaders. Q. What are the business prospects you see for flags as a product in the Event and Exhibition industry in India? A. At Flag Company, we constantly explore new markets because the

market trends are changing. Demand and usage of flex will eventually decline as more and more customers are getting to know about the benefits of flags. In next 2 to 3 years, the flex market is going to deplete by 20% annually. So I think, by the next 5 to 7 years from now, the percentage of fabric signage being used in India would go up to 50%. I am sure flags are going to be the next media for advertisement. Q. What are the kinds of clients you cater to? A. Our cliental base in wide and interesting. We have offices all across India. We are currently exporting flags to government bodies. We also supply to sports organisations but our biggest customers are event management companies. The demand for our products is increasing day by day because of its features. All our products are attractive, light weight, portable and easy to use which makes it easy for logistics and that's what our customers want. Q. Is The Flag Company only concerned with the manufacturing of flags or does it also provide services like installation and maintenance? A. Basically we are flag manufacturers for which we have our own in-house stitching and printing tools. But, in case a customer asks for deliveries, we help them in deliveries too, almost anywhere around the globe. We send our team to sites if the customer wants to get it installed also.

I also keep getting queries from customers about how should they wash the flag or dispose it off. So we give them instructions on how they should maintain a flag. We also guide them about the disposal guidelines, depending upon whether it is a country flag or an advertisement flag. Q. Which are the major projects your company handled so far? A. Our first break through was in 2007 – the World Military Games. It's a very prestigious event. After that, we have supplied to the Common Wealth Games. Another major event for which we have provided our flags is the BRICS Summit. Apart from this, we have supplied flags to Indian Navy also and we are currently the largest suppliers of the largest Indian Flags which have been put up in Attari, at Wagah Border. There they put a 360 foot flag pole and the flag we supplied measures 120 X 80 feet. This is the largest flown Indian flag in India. Like that we are supplying to 55 monumental flag poles all across India where the sizes vary from 100 feet to the maximum size i.e. 360 feet. Q. What is message for the Industry? A. I would say that please don't use flex because flex is basically made of plastic and is hazardous. Yes, it is cheaper but it's just a 1 time use. With so many events happening every day, it's just getting accumulated. I would suggest, go for fabric. Though it is a little expensive, it is eco-friendly and it can be reused. Not just this, it looks better than flex.

I am George Kayser head the subsidiary of the Sioen Group in the markets of far East from India to Japan and from Mongolia to Indonesia. We have been providing our Exhibition Services from past 20 years and the first country we chose was China but we also provide to other parts of the world. We are trading sales and service centre for the Far East. The Group itself is from Belgium and the products that we sell are made either in Belgium or in France. The company exists since 1960. We manufacture PVC coated fabrics that are used in Event and exhibition industry in the form of tents in order to create venue. And we are very particular about the quality of our products. It has 3,500 employees and 360 million Euro turnovers. Q. When did you enter the Exhibition Service Industry and when did you come in touch with the Indian Exhibition Service Industry? A. Earlier I was working with the paper industry. I entered the Exhibition Service Industry when I joined Sioen and I have been working with the company from past 18 years now. I

already had the knowledge and experience in the Chinese market when I happened to join Sioen in Shanghai. Shanghai is a city that can give you a lot of exposure to other countries with the commendable number of fairs and exhibitions that the city hosts. While working there, I came in touch with a lot of Indian customers and this is how my association with India started. Q. When did you enter the India Market and how big an opportunity is the Indian Exhibition & Event industry to Sioen? A. We had entered the Indian market 17 years ago. In the beginning it was for the Sign industry for printing which was very striving at that time. Then this market went up to very cheap products and sales became difficult both in India and China. But gradually, it picked up again especially in the even industry for tents and for permanent structures. Q. Which is your personal favourite trade shows, globally? A. Few of my personal favourite shows globally include: Techtextile held in Frankfurt, Germany. It is a well organised show and the best part is that they have extraordinary stalls.

Q. Being in the Exhibition Service Industry, what is the biggest challenge that you face? A. Honestly, I would say that the biggest challenge is the market itself because the competition levels are really high. This is not just felt by us but also our customers in the market. So whoever we deal with is under pressure and therefore we are under pressure. But we know that it is a growing business and the pressure is inevitable. The competition guarantees our position in the market. I believe that even if you have 40 SupplierCompetitors, you only need to be in the best five and you are assured to survive. Q. How are you planning to proceed in the Indian Exhibition Service Market? A. Together with our partner, Lucky International, we want to further expand our market share in India. This would be done in different ways which I cannot describe right now. Since, the world is becoming more and more computerised, we are looking forward to introduce fabrics that are visually attractive and have completely new and advance features like integrating electronics.

Exclusive Interview

Mr. Jaideep Anand, General Manager The Leela Ambience Convention Hotel, Delhi Q. What is the relevance of MICE services to a luxury hotel like Leela Ambience? A. At Leela Ambience, we are aware of the growing demand for MICE facilities. Other brands do not capitalize their MICE services but we are highly capitalizing our MICE services. We understand that an exhibition space requires facilities like: ease of access in entry; a great car parking; and a high ball room ceiling. We have a spacious car parking facility in the basement with capacity to park 700 cars. This ensures that there is no traffic jam. Our ball room's ceiling is 19 feet high, one of the highest is in the country. This allows us to bring in huge machines and vehicles like trucks and JCBs for exhibitions. Today there are only few hotels that offer such suitable exhibition space. The Leela Ambience poses a serious competition to other hotels that offer MICE services because we run even better services at a five-star deluxe level.

Q. What differentiates The Leela Ambience from other hotels? A. We offer very sensible rates because we know that MICE operates in a certain bandwidth and people have their set budgets. We have kept our rates in-line with other major hotels but the services and products of The Leela is very different from the others. Also, our product is way bigger than any other property.

Client satisfaction is very important to us. Sometimes we even take a step out of our way to fulfill our customer's need. For instance, we hosted the National Conference for Asian Paints, which is one of the largest conferences in India. The organizers needed had booked our hotel completely but they needed 100 rooms. So Leela Ambience is the mother-ship that provides feed to a lot of other hotels around it.

Q. Kindly tell us about the MICE facilities you offer at Leela Ambience.

Q. Aerocity is gaining a lot of popularity with many hotels setting in the premises. Is that a benefit or drawback for your hotel?

A. At Leela Ambience, we provide a luxury experience. Unlike other hotels, we provide a single – window solution to all Conventions & Exhibitions. We provide Guest Rooms; 70,000sqft of Ball Room space; 25,600sqft big Hall which can accommodate about 300 stalls; and an Outdoor space that can accommodate another 200 stalls. Not just this, we can provide a residence board and lodge to almost a 1000 people as we have 480 rooms on top. We provide these solutions at a very high level of services.

A. Being located in Aerocity is both - an advantage and a disadvantage for us. Most of the hotels in Aerocity are those who did not get space in the city so to get business, the only niche can offer is their location. Their niche is either transient of MICE but they do not have enough MICE capacity too. In comparison to these hotels, The Leela offers 26,000sqft of MICE capacity which is much larger than the other hotels in Aerocity.

“I think that being situated here in East Delhi is a great advantage for us. Visitors & Exhibitors from both Pragati Maidan & India Expo Mart get a conveniently placed 5-star deluxe hotel in their vicinity. Moreover we are best suited for the MICE travelers who desire to go on a quick sight seeing trip to Taj Mahal.”
