After the coronavirus pandemic-induced hiatus of over two years, regular international ights are set to resume in India, with airports and airlines getting ready for normal overseas operations. Battered by the pandemic, the airline industry is slowly coming back to normalcy and the resumption of normal overseas ights is expected to provide a llip to the sector. The Indian aviation regulator has approved foreign and Indian airlines to operate 3,249 weekly international departures during the summer schedule—from March 27 till October 29. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has approved Indian Raghav Khosla airlines to operate 1,466 weekly departures to 43 destinations in 27 countries. Indigo, the largest domestic airline which has big plans for international expansion, has been approved to operate 505 international departures per week, followed by Air India at 361 weekly departures, Air India Express at 340 weekly departures, SpiceJet at 130, GoFIRST at 74, and Vistara at 56 weekly ight departures. Despite the ban, few people were travelling internationally through the Indian government’s air bubble arrangements with various countries. Now, with the bans lifted the airline industry will be able to recover some losses due to the negligible operations in the past two years. COVER INTERVIEW

March 2022

In Conversation With ALLISON SODHA President , Sodha

Travel & Author of Go! Girl Guides India As the President of Sodha Travel and India travel expert, Allison is passionate about offering travel tips and destination inspiration. She has curated content for several publications, including Little India, and facilitated panels on sustainable travel in South Asia. Allison is currently the Delhi Destination Expert for AFAR and India Specialist for the Women's Tour Collective.

COVER INTERVIEW

March 2022

MS. Please describe your professional journey with us and tell us how you thought up the idea to start Sodha Travel? Over time, tell us about a major milestone you have achieved in the Travel industry. Allison Sodha. I always had an affinity for India and nurtured this curiosity by studying Indian history and religiosity in college. My favorite courses were History of Modern India, Hinduism, and Foundations of Buddhism. My research continued post-grad as I traveled across the country and contributed my work to several publications. This passion to create experiences fueled by a deeper understanding of the destinations planted the seeds for Sodha Travel. In the past 15+ years I have interviewed diplomats and dignitaries, facilitated panels on sustainable initiatives in South Asia, and held the title of Delhi Local Expert with AFAR Media. However, my biggest milestone was becoming an author! Go! Girl Guides India released on March 8th of this year. The 450-page guidebook weaves a tapestry of cultural curiosities, destination inspiration, health and safety, and travel tales in 20 destinations and five national parks across north and west India.

will still have authentic connections and conversations. It is equally the responsibility of the tour operator to create and execute a less manufactured and more genuine experience. MS. What communication and learning possibilities do you think there are between US travel agents and their Indian counterparts? Allison Sodha. Tremendous possibilities! The key is creating strategic partnerships that cater to both markets and identifying the unique operational challenges. MS. Which aspects of your business concept do you regard to be critical success factors? Allison Sodha. Personalization and connection. It’s important to really listen to your clients and understand the WHY behind selecting a destination. At Sodha Travel, we customize each and every itinerary. The planning process is a time to create, converse, and collaborate. We take a genuine interest in learning what fuels our client’s wanderlust.

MS. Who are your key clients and what makes you apart from other Travel agencies? Allison Sodha. Our key clients are savvy, educated travelers who look beyond the typical mass-produced itinerary; they seek experiential and regenerative offerings that provide a deeper connection to the destination. Sodha Travel’s expertise is not just from living in the region or being welltraveled. It’s a culmination of almost two decades of research, interviews, and insider access to local communities. Our clients recognize and value our passion and expertise. MS. What about India as a tourism destination, in your opinion, is greatly misunderstood? Do American tourists get to see the "genuine" India? Allison Sodha. India is far more complex than arranged marriage, poverty, the caste system, and polytheism. I also believe there are many misconceptions about women traveling to India. There is a fundamental difference between statistics and sensationalism. Of course I cannot speak for every woman, nor do I intend to minimize the experience of another, but I truly believe in being informed and not influenced. Even on a mass-produced group tour to the Golden Triangle, travelers – American or otherwise -

March 2022 learn about the country’s cultural complexities, download a language app, or enroll in a course or certification that explores the history, religiosity, and/or societal construct. Understand the destination beyond the role of a traveler. MS. The simple ageing out of the workforce is one of the most serious issues facing travel agents. What are organizations doing to attract young people to the field?

I also believe it is crucial to know your market; get comfortable turning down business that does not align with your practices and philosophies. MS. How are you predicting the major trends in the travel industry for the coming year? Allison Sodha. In my experience, travelers in a postpandemic landscape are ready to say YES. They are willing to spend more for a unique adventure or splash of luxury. I also predict a spike in the FIT market as more travelers seek out private, individualized tours. MS. Do you think travel businesses should rely on thirdparty tech companies or keep development control in-house because of the level of complexity required in creating numerous platforms?

Allison Sodha. Not enough! There needs to be an initiative to showcase the different ways to engage in the travel industry. It has been refreshing to observe the next generation leverage social media platforms to grow a new audience, but most influencers are not destination specialists. The role of a typical “travel agent” will become obsolete in the coming years and the industry should nurture more diversified roles and opportunities. MS. Last but not least, how do you see the industry in which you work evolving? Have you set any specific goals for yourself ? Allison Sodha. I anticipate a stronger push toward not just sustainable travel but regenerative experiences. As for my goals, I am working toward hosting a travel series that showcases India’s dynamic (and lesser known) destinations. After almost a decade of intermittent language lessons, I also want to (finally) be fluent in Hindi!

Allison Sodha. It really depends on the business model and projected growth. If a company can execute efficiencies by outsourcing, it can often be more cost effective. MS. Which are some of the challenges that travel agents face today? What are some remedies you suggest to overcome these challenges? Allison Sodha. I believe travel agents and advisors need to become more specialized in a region or style of travel. Choose a niche and thoughtfully grow your market. Go beyond simply visiting a destination or working with a DMC;

Learn, Adapt and

Evolve Continuously Asjad Imran, Founder & CEO, Traventions MS. Please describe your professional journey with us and tell us how you thought up the idea to start the Traventions. Please share with us a major milestone you have achieved with Traventions over time. Asjad Imran. I’m a Travel & Tourism professional with over two decades in the industry. Post my IATA in the year 2000 I started my career as International ticketing counter staff in a small travel agency in Bangalore where I learnt Business Travel, but the enquiries for International holidays excited me more to learn about the destinations which gave my career a breakthrough in joining Cox & Kings as Junior Operations Executive, then as Counter Sales Executive in Outbound Tours. Spending almost three years it was MICE division which fascinated me the most as it was always my dream job to work in a corporate world. For the next 16 years I was fortunate to have worked in MICE at highly reputed travel companies such as Make My Trip, TMIC, Yatra.com, Zenith Leisure Holidays and last job as General Manager at Fountainhead Entertainment which gave me a wider exposure on Events and Activations and gauged that all these three divisions can be put together as one stop solution. Throughout my MICE journey I understood that corporate clients defines MICE players only as travel agents but when it comes to Corporate events, activations there’s always a different marketing or event agency to choose from. Hence my inspiration to start Traventions was to create one platform for MICE, Events & Activations for the corporate world. The name Traventions itself is a fusion of Travel, Events & Activations. Since our inception we have not only achieved big numbers in MICE taking corporate groups to Scandinavia, New Zealand, Italy, UAE, Shimla & Manali, Goa, Kerala etc but also as clients trusted in our vision, we were able to successfully handle Annual Events, Rewards & Recognition programs, Product launches and five cities activations for Tata group.

MS. In what ways has Traventions contributed to making the client's experience memorable? What are your key services? Asjad Imran. We believe in the “keep it simple” approach. With clear vision, worldwide experience, outstanding business networks and excellent management skills, Traventions embraces a modern, innovative approach to tailor every aspect of tour and event to suit our clients’ needs. We follow a five step success formula – the brief, the creative, the plan, the delivery and the evaluation. Our key services includes Travel – MICE, Customised Leisure Holidays, Travel Vouchers, offsites, Offshore Travel Service. Event Management – Product Launches, R&R, Fashion Shows, Annual Days/Conferences, Celebrity Management & Entertainment. Activations – End to End Campaign solutions, Installations, Design, Production, Venue Liaison, Media, Photo-Videography, Logistics. Experiential Marketing – Brand Awareness, Lead Generation, Collateral, Signage and Branding, Social Media, Public Relations, Pre & Post Event MarketingEvaluation MS. Which has been the most challenging show hosted or managed by your organization? What behavioural changes have you noticed in your clients after the pandemic Covid19? Asjad Imran. Quite a few post pandemic in all our

verticals. We’ve seen visa rejections of families & children to UAE which has never happened prior to covid, at least not in my tenure. Rejections of Business Visas to Italy of senior directors of a corporate with no valid reason due to which we had to call off the event and postpone. During the five cities activations The world has changed in an unprecedented fashion, and so has client’s preference. Promotional & functional spending have taken precedence over steep budgeting. Corporates are deeply concerned about the impact of Covid-19, both from a health and economic perspective. Clients are responding in variety of ways and have different attitudes, behaviours and purchasing habits. Some feel anxious and worried in doing any event or incentive trip, at the other extreme, some clients remain indifferent to the pandemic and are continuing the MICE and Events business as usual. MS. What are your thoughts on digitalization and the potential for using technology to accelerate the industry's momentum? Asjad Imran. Over the time technology has helped simplify travel, reduce costs, enhance operational efficiency and improve customer experience. Whereas it’s not been implemented widely under MICE division but mostly for intranet based data analytics. Moving forward we at Traventions have plans to develop AI based

applications exclusively for MICE and Events platform. Digitalization would help in easier, faster and more effective communication. Better resource management, improved customer engagements and effective marketing and promotions would surely open new sales avenues. MS. What changes have you made to your services to accommodate the new normal? Asjad Imran. To live in the world is to adapt constantly. While the world starts to make progress tiptoeing post COVID-19 pandemic, businesses are starting to reopen, events are slowly starting to ramp up. Our immediate focus has been to tackle the complex problems in the industry that have emerged from the pandemic by highlighting resilience, recovery and restructuring. But it’s not as easy as slipping into an old work outfit. New strategies are being implemented throughout the business landscape to ensure employees and customers can more easily adapt to the new normal. We are now looking to act decisively and strategically to take advantage of the world’s changes. We are also choosing to organize documentation, data analytics onto a digital platform. It reduces the need to have person-to-person

Mumbai Announces Plans For Net-zero By 2050

M

umbai has announced detailed plans to zero out carbon emissions by 2050, a target that puts it two decades ahead of India's national goal and makes it the first city in South Asia to set such a timeline. In the plan announced, India's financial center, home to south Asia's biggest corporations, stock bourses and the central bank, has proposed exhaustive changes to the way it manages energy, water, air, waste, green spaces and transport for its 19 million residents. “We don't have the luxury of time,” said Aaditya Thackeray, environment minister of the state of Maharashtra of which Mumbai is the capital.

21 | www.miceshowcase.com

Without intervention, the effects of climate change could cost India $35 trillion over the next 50 years. Drawing on inputs from officials, citizens, researchers and companies, Mumbai's plan lists changes across six domains. This includes investments in housing, electrifying public transport and more walkable roads; floodresistant drainage and water conservation apart from adding open spaces, investing in clean water and sanitation, and rooftop solar capacities. In the coming three decades the city aims to cut to zero its total greenhouse emission which in 2019 stood at 23.42 million tons or 1.8 tons per capita. The

largest investments will have to come into energy, which accounts for 72% of total emissions, according to the plan documents. Vehicle emissions and waste comprise the rest. Plans for some crucial aspects of Mumbai's transition — switching its peak 3,400MW electricity consumption to renewable power sources for instance — remain unclear. Private conglomerates including the Tata Group and billionaire Gautam Adani's companies, which supply power to the city mostly from coal plants, have said they will make investments in order to meet their own net-zero transition goals.

Greengage Launches Event Smart To Track Carbon Emissions For Responsible Meetings And Events

G

reengage - an independent provider of advice and accreditation to the meetings and travel industry - has launched EVENTsmart, a carbon calculator for responsible meetings and events of all sizes ranging from virtual meetings to large-scale conferences and exhibitions. EVENTsmart is launched in response to demand from event organisers, hotels and meeting venues for a new approach to responsible event planning. Event venues in particular are planning to use the platform to

demonstrate to bookers their commitment to reducing emissions and waste. The platform has been designed to evaluate all carbon emissions for meetings and events including travel, accommodation, the meeting space, catering, electricity, gas, water, event materials and waste. Greengage CEO Andrew Perolls said, “As companies increasingly focus on reducing their carbon footprint, meetings and events are in the spotlight. Our new software platform will provide accurate data for anything from a virtual meeting to a large-scale conference or exhibition.

Emissions are generated from travel, accommodation, catering, heat, power, waste and it's important to be able to measure each element and cut levels of Co2. “We're on a mission to work with clients and partners to demonstrate that changing some of the norms in event catering can provide a more environmentally friendly outcome, lower emissions, and save money while meeting the expectations of delegates who want to see a more sustainable approach.”

After a successful launch in June 2020, Conferli has announced another innovative addition on its platform. This milestone is the result of cooperation between Switzerland Convention & Incentive Bureau and Conferli who joined forces to find a solution that would help streamline the process of matching association events with countries. With this development an important unmet need in the event industry is addressed, namely conference organizers are now able to base their country choice on data-driven benchmarking. In this additional process, associations are matched with

countries based on their strengths and suitability, which cuts their lead time, increases their success rate, and makes the tender process cost-efficient. Especially for associations being able to compare countries is of utmost importance. Furthermore, Local hosts or national associations can now easily find a suitable destination within their country. “Since the launch of Conferli

This has a special function during the pandemic period because associations will be able to see quarantine rules per country in one overview, next to sustainability measurements, country support and ecosystems,” explains Ms. Nienke van der Malen, Founder and CEO of Conferli. “The tender process traditionally used for selecting an event destination is complex and takes a lot of time and effort,” she added “Until now, with this new feature you can get matched to countries and cities in just a few clicks!”

new ICAO pilot project is helping airlines, airports, and other air transport partners to test and leverage the capability to authenticate travel documents and related health certificates, including official proofs of vaccination. The limited-time pilot project trial is providing the private sector partners with enhanced opportunities to make use of the data in ICAO's Public Key Directory (PKD), a critical backbone supporting the security and efficiency of international mobility. PKD data supports the international system of asymmetric cryptography employed by States to secure documents such as electronic passports, and importantly it contains

no personal information about the travel document or health proof holders. “The ICAO PKD has always been a valuable tool for countries to enhance border security and facilitate travel,” explained ICAO Secretary General Mr. Juan Carlos Salazar. “By allowing the private sector stakeholders to make use of PKD data, in support of the development of new value-added tools and solutions, ICAO is hoping to help accelerate related innovation and deliver numerous winwin benefits for both governments and passengers.” Fourteen companies are already taking part in the pilot project, exploring new types of products and services which

governments and the wider aviation community could benefit from by leveraging existing PKD data. The end-result should be a more varied range of stakeholders being able to authenticate travel and related health documents throughout a traveller's journey, resulting in fully secure, seamless processes, added convenience, and higher efficiency for all concerned. “In this sense this pilot project should also be appreciated as helping to support our overall efforts to reconnect the world and deliver a more rapid return to normal for international air travel as the pandemic subsides.” Mr. Salazar added.

AMR International In Collaboration With AbuDhabi Releases Post-Pandemic B2B Event Subvention Strategies

In an increasingly competitive market, MICE destinations need to up their game post-pandemic, both to remain competitive and to attract events that specifically add value to their destinations Background As the MICE industry returns, AMR International in partnership with the Abu Dhabi Convention & Exhibition Bureau, conducted research to understand subvention and the role it can play in incentivising event recovery. AMR interviewed c.50 industry experts, organisers, convention bureaus and event management companies around the world. This white paper provides an overview of the findings on subvention, including an outline of different approaches, what drives success, the impact of the pandemic, and the outlook. What is subvention and how is it used? Subvention is a grant of support typically paid by a public entity to enhance or support an event in the host destination. Destinations provide subvention as hosting an event brings a

28 | www.miceshowcase.com

range of economic and strategic benefits. Subvention packages vary in size and components. Benefits can be direct, meaning cash. Or they can also be indirect, meaning in-kind benefits (e.g., hosting a reception or marketing support). The current landscape Subvention offerings vary significantly by destination. Some destinations do not offer subvention at all, such as New York, Paris, and London. These destinations rely on their standing and reputation to attract MICE business. Other European destinations typically invest modest amounts compared to other parts of the world. They have a targeted subvention strategy, focusing on certain event types and sizes that fit their current infrastructure. Destinations across the Asia Pacific region with less established MICE industries and often greater distance from attendee bases

tend to offer generous packages. Flexibility is critical to success There is no single ‘right way’ to approach subvention. Schemes vary depending on compatibility requirements with regulatory frameworks and the need to align with a destination’s objectives. Increasingly destinations are choosing to offer a mix of indirect and direct subvention, enabling them to cater to a wide range of organiser needs. In special cases, some destinations choose to flex or circumvent the established assessment process to maximise their chances of capturing desirable or flagship events. Outsized support is justified based on the event’s contribution to the long-term strategic goals of the destination. Barcelona enjoys the legacy of its tech centre of excellence as a result of attracting Mobile World Congress.

hesitant to support the virtual component of a hybrid event as remote participants bring little economic benefit to the destination. Nonetheless, destinations are increasing support for digital equipment and infrastructure, viewing hybrid events as a long-term investment as they evolve into digital destinations. While hybrid events have been adopted across the globe and are slated to continue post-pandemic, many experts believe the return of inperson events will cause the scope of hybrid events to wane.

Ÿ

What are the implications for MICE destinations?

Impact of hybrid events and technology

Destinations face a series of challenges, including:

If MICE destinations choose to adopt at least some of these approaches, they will gain a strong competitive advantage that will position them for future growth and long-term value.

Fortescue Future Industries And Airbus Join Forces To Help Decarbonise Aviation for a pollution-free future,” Dr Forrest said. “We are all citizens of a global world. People want to travel, reunite with family and friends and explore new places without being forced to pollute the planet. The problem isn’t travel, the problem is how we fuel our planes and ships – all of that must turn emissions free. No greenwash, no mirage, just 100 per cent green.

lobal green hydrogen company Fortescue Future Industries (FFI) and Airbus, a world leader in aeronautics, have joined forces to create a working alliance to help enable the aviation industry to decarbonise through zeroemissions green hydrogen.

G

This announcement reflects FFI’s and Airbus’ shared ambition to leverage their respective expertise to support the entry-into-service of a green hydrogen-based aircraft by 2035. Green hydrogen, unlike other forms of hydrogen, is made from water using 100 per cent renewable electricity. To mark the partnership, FFI and Airbus have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at Airbus’ headquarters in Toulouse, France. The MoU will allow both companies to collaborate closely, as one focused taskforce, to implement green hydrogen as a fuel within the aviation industry. FFI and Airbus will look specifically at challenges around green hydrogen regulations, infrastructure

and global supply chains – from the production of green hydrogen, right through to its delivery to airports and transfer onto aircraft. According to the MoU, FFI will provide cost outlook and technology drivers on the various elements of the supply chain and will build infrastructure deployment scenarios for the supply of green hydrogen to targeted airports. Airbus will provide characteristics on fleet energy usage, scenarios for hydrogen demand in aviation, refueling specifications and aviation regulatory framework. FFI founder and Chairman, Dr Andrew Forrest AO, said the global aviation industry produced more than 2.5 per cent of global carbon dioxide emissions, with emissions having doubled since the 1980s. “The time is now for a green revolution in the aviation industry. This exciting collaboration brings together leaders in the aviation industry with leaders in green energy

“Look no further than my home country of Australia to see the disasters of our changing environment. The catastrophic floods on the east coast are being described as “one-in-1000-year events,” which means that every year there is just a 0.1% chance of a flood of that severity happening. Australia’s climate has already warmed on average by almost 1.5°C since 1910, and these extreme events are going to occur more frequently if industry doesn’t come together to decarbonise quickly and completely.” “I ask those remaining institutions who continue to invest in fossil fuels, to think of their kids. In particular, those so-called entrepreneurs who are supporting fossil fuel assets, please consider your children’s future over your profits.” Airbus Vice President of Zero Emissions Aircraft Glenn Llewellyn said, “the future of air travel is green”. “Airbus has identified green hydrogen as the most promising option for decarbonisation to meet our environmental challenges.
