May 2016

These are certainly exciting times for the Indian Exhibition Industry. The last month was fascinating indeed. We witnessed three mega events – IESA India Expo Shop, IEIA Open Seminar and EEMA EEMAGINE 2016. The events catered to their respective segments but each of them aimed to promote some part of our industry in one way or the other. IESA had been formed a year back and it has done exceedingly well to reach this far, so soon. It is a vibrant association that does not shy from being very whatsapp friendly, as long as it is serving their communication needs. This out of the box measure to stay connected with its members has won it criticism and praise alike, but the senior management maintains that the communication platform enables it to be fast, reactive and interactive. The rst IESA Expo Shop saw massive stalls being put up by association members. Each stall was so well built, it imbibed great story telling and legacy of each company could be ascertained by going through the walls. The directors took great pains to be present on all the days of the expo and were positive of the event. The event could have gained well if it would have been promoted comprehensively and extensively. Nevertheless, it was a worthwhile effort considering it was the rst edition. The Sixth IEIA Open Seminar saw over 250 exhibition professionals gather at BIEC, this month. The event saw some power-packed panel discussions, networking meets and industry interactions. IEIA also collaborated with UFI and IAEE to promote the Global Exhibition Day initiative in India. EEMAGINE 2016 was well organized that showcased the strength and expertise of Indian Events Industry. The events sector is very dynamic, glamorous and has huge potential to grow. Sports is a new dimension that is gaining much attention these days. The month also witnessed yet another feat being achieved by Exhibition Showcase. The First India Exhibition Directory was ofcially launched at the IEIA Open Seminar by the IEIA president. The industry leaders were in all praise of the initiative and congratulated Exhibition Showcase for consistently introducing value adds for promoting the Indian Exhibition Industry. Get a copy reserved for yourself today!! In this issue we bring together a collage of issues relating to the exhibition industry. It's an interesting mix of articles that will keep our readers absorbed all through. There are interesting bits on the latest developments in the Indian and Global Exhibition market. CEIR Releases New Report Series on Attendee Retention This series explores how exhibition organizers engage in attendee retention efforts and provides profile data on repeat/loyal attendees or alumni, in addition to what motivates them to visit a specific exhibition repeatedly.

42 Exhibition Showcase I May 2016

T

he Center for Exhibition Industry Research (CEIR) announced the release of the first report in its newest series, 2016 Attendee Retention Insights. Reports from this exciting new, landmark study offers organizers a comprehensive resource to help understand the profile of attendees that visit an exhibition repeatedly and the content that turns them into a loyal fanbase. The series consists of five reports, beginning with Part One: Basics for Creating Your Attendee Retention Strategy: Tracking, Proling and Why They Come Back. “This study series offers organizers a resource to help them benchmark their attendee retention efforts with industry norms or a guide post on how

to start attendee retention efforts,” noted CEIR President & CEO Brian Casey, CEM. “This series explores how exhibition organizers engage in attendee retention efforts and provides profile data on repeat/loyal attendees or alumni, in addition to what motivates them to visit a specific exhibition repeatedly.” Key findings from Part One: Basics for Creating Your Attendee Retention Strategy: Tracking, Profiling and Why They Come Back reflect that 77 percent of top-ranked exhibition organizers track attendee retention. Among those that engage in this practice, 98 percent track retention on a per attendee basis and 48 percent track retention on a per attendee organization basis.

GLOBAL NEWS

The most popular definition of “retention” applies to those who attend at least two of the past four editions of an exhibition. This definition is used by 81 percent of organizers who track attendee retention and 86 percent who track attendee organization retention. Based on this definition, results reveal that retention rates are: 58.9 percent per attendee, and 65.8 percent per attendee organization. Repeat attendees represent a higher concentration of who exhibitors aim to encounter at a business-to-business exhibition; i.e., of those who have purchasing influence and are higher ranked in their organizations. Launched in the fall of 2015, the 2016 Attendee Retention Insights series focuses on the largest trade shows in t h e U. S . t o u n d e r s t a n d w h a t generates loyalty among attendees and how event organizers motivate them to return on a regular basis. Input was sought from organizer and repeat attendee perspectives. The resulting reports offer readers a road map for bench marking attendee retention strategy practices with industry norms; an understanding of commonly held characteristics of professionals who attend a given event regularly; and insights to guide organizers in their marketing and event development. Lastly, the 2016 Attendee Retention Insights reports offer charts that compare repeat attendee wants and preferences to trade show offerings, which enable organizers to assess where repeat attendee needs are typically served well – and where gaps exist in offerings – suggesting potential areas of improvement. Part Two: Exhibition Floor Features that Build a Loyal Alumni Attendee Audience examines the various aspects of an exhibition floor and identifies which offerings have the greatest impact on converting

attendees to loyal alumni to a specific event. Key findings show that: • The quality of face-to-face interactions with booth staff is the primary exhibition floor feature that builds loyal alumni. For nine out of 10 alumni, it is important to be able to have specific questions answered “on-the-spot” and to be able to engage with product experts and designers. • The second exhibition floor feature that builds loyal alumni is the quality of product interactions. Three out of four come back for inbooth product demonstrations and new product showcase areas, among other product interaction opportunities. "Response to this new study is strong,” said CEIR President & CEO B r i a n C a s e y, C E M . “ C l e a r l y organizers are looking for direction on how to maximize retention of a quality attendee base. Part Two of the series reveals that repeat attendees go back to events that deliver the quality faceto-face interaction and product experiences they want, which speaks to the overall power of exhibitions.” The full report lists the level of importance to repeat attendees of a total of 16 different exhibition floor features. It compares these importance rankings to what exhibition organizers think is important to their alumni. This comparative exercise identifies where repeat attendee and organizer perceptions are aligned and where there are gaps, offering areas of opportunity to consider for improvement. In addition to total results, 2016 Attendee Retention Insights Part Two: Exhibition Floor Features that Build a Loyal Alumni Attendee Audience identifies unique preferences by attendee demographics, including by gender, age, role in purchasing

decisions, job level, organizational size, annual purchases of showrelated products and services and profile of event attended. Additionally, exhibition organizer results that differ from total results are reported as well, including by: whether association-run or independently-run; size of exhibition by Net Square Feet and number of attendees; whether an event rotates locations and whether an event occurs during the business week only or includes a weekend day. The 2016 Attendee Retention Insights series consists of five reports focusing on the largest trade shows in the U.S. to understand what generates loyalty among attendees and how event organizers motivate them to return on a regular basis. Input was sought from organizer and repeat attendee perspectives. The resulting reports offer readers a road map for benchmarking attendee retention strategy practices with industry norms; an understanding of commonly held characteristics of professionals who attend a given event regularly; and insights to guide organizers in their marketing and event development.
