Dear Readers, Inflation accelerated in the United States and Eurozone to 8.5% and 7.5%, respectively, with high energy prices as the principal driver. The US economy contracted –0.4% in the first quarter of 2022; economists are citing steep increases in US imports as a cause of the retreat. Developed and emerging economies alike are experiencing continuing supply chain disruptions and productions shortages, challenges magnified by the effects of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Recent monthly data suggest, however, that global economic fundamentals are sound and overall demand remains strong. Output is limited by shortages in labor and supplies. Global trade and supply chains were affected soon after China imposed restrictions in Shanghai to stop the spread of COVID-19. The measures are now being lifted, but China is still recording between 1,000 and 3,500 new cases daily. These figures are low by global standards, but the government there is sticking to a zero-COVID-19 policy. This augurs well for India as India is predominantly competing with China in many spaces.

The pandemic offered us an opportunity to stop, dig deep and comeback stronger with a clear purpose

“After hitting rock bottom during the pandemic, the events and exhibitions ecosystem in India will leapfrog on the back of focussed customer centricity and tech-driven innovations. With its basket of diverse 22 trade fair brands and the hard-earned loyalty of its partners, Messe Muenchen India will continue to expand business opportunities for all stakeholders in keeping with its newly-launched manifesto” - Bhupinder Singh, CEO, Messe Muenchen India Pvt Ltd. 30 | www.exhibi onshowcase.com

May 2022

The pandemic has had a debilitating effect on all businesses around the globe. The Exhibition Industry was at the forefront among those that were hit the hardest. The trade fair industry across the world went into a limbo as the pandemic spread its tentacles across a dumbfounded world. Even as the first wave started waning, the uncertainty over government mandates on large gatherings kept the industry on tenterhooks. Elaborating on the tsunami of uncertainty that gripped the organisation, Bhupinder Singh says, “We at Messe Muenchen India were like deer caught in the headlights; survival took precedence as we explored newer business models to stay afloat. Although several organizations attempted creating digital marketplaces, they at best became a tool to stay connected with the communities that were being hitherto served. As the industry started coming to terms with a post-pandemic new world order, industry ecosystems needed to be satisfied with the risk mitigation measures that organizers were adapting to deftly manage uncertainties. Thus, even credible and trusted marketplaces were being viewed with a doubtful lens. It was amply evident that we needed to rebuild trust and confidence in trade fairs and, by extension, our commitment to deliver meaningful marketplaces to the communities we served. We at Messe Muenchen India needed a paradigm shift in describing our existence. The pandemic had presented the opportunity to stop, look back and reload our purpose statement, redefine our mission, and rediscover our values, aligned with the parent company but customised for the Indian market.” Earlier this year, through a week-long brainstorming session called ELEVATE, Team Messe Muenchen India carefully curated its Purpose for existence, Mission Statement for the defined future pathway, and the Core Values that the organization stands by. Bhupinder Singh explains: Our purpose is “to enable meaningful handshakes; to unlock business opportunities ” TM

about our industry and our organization. Our mission includes the long-term business objectives that we are striving to achieve. This will be the foundation for our short term and medium-term goals.” What sets us apart? Achieving a purposeful mission without clear guiding principles can be unrealistic and hence, Messe Muenchen India’s core values play an important role. “Our values define how we conduct ourselves not just when all is calm but also in times of adversity. These are common behaviours that we practice and want to get better at practicing in our organization. Our workplace practices and rituals are derived from our values, thus making them liveable and real across the organization. As Messe Muenchen India team members, it is our responsibility to reinforce them day in and day out. We will drive into the future whilst espousing our values of “Trust, Team Spirit, Craftsmanship and Entrepreneurship.” In an exclusive conversation with Exhibition Showcase, Bhupinder Singh, CEO, Messe Muenchen India, shares how the organisation has emerged from the pandemic ashes and how it is poised to soar higher and ride the post-pandemic growth wave in the exhibitions industry. ES: How have the last 27 months been in terms of organisation evolution and key learnings? BS: The last couple of years were full of uncertainty but we were quick to re-calibrate our services to best suit our customers’ needs. We have steered innovations through a series of Webinars and Online Expos, including one of the largest online gatherings of industry professionals-Messe Muenchen India Online, a three-day online expo in December 2020, featuring 10 exhibitions and representing 6 clusters. This expo brought together 334 exhibitors from 16 countries, displaying 2,135 solutions, and drawing 8,715 visitors. The idea was to keep B2B engagement quick and seamless despite all the uncertainty. As the global economy was reeling under demand and supply-side shocks, bringing manufacturing and services sectors to a standstill, we continued to believe in our mission of bridging stakeholders’ interests and offering them a platform to share their concerns via our well-curated online shows. Our digital platform MMI Connect was born out of this necessity to bridge trade communities while avoiding

May 2022 going forward exhibition management will leverage a host of technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), Augmented/Virtual Reality (AR/VR) and Machine Learning (ML) to make data-driven decisions. pandemic risks. This platform was developed in-house to offer constructive solutions for networking and brand engagement. We are proud of this indigenous solution which has now extended as a one-stop support platform for all partners of our on-ground exhibitions. ES: How important is the role of talent acquisition for a sector like exhibitions, especially in the post-pandemic world? BS: The pandemic threw our industry into an existential crisis. We required clarity of purpose that we exist to solve business problems of the real world. With this clear sense of purpose, we need to attract, sustain, and develop talent to achieve our mission through lived values. Ours is a servicebased, people focussed industry where we use a vast variety of tech tools to achieve the end-goals of buyers and sellers within a given marketplace. While we use and showcase the latest cutting-edge technology to promote trade and unlock sectoral potential, people remain the key focus of our business. Hence, our in-house talent team is called Human Asset Management, and not human resources because resources are used but assets are built. Our strong focus on Core Values stems from the belief that skills can be taught when there is a willingness to learn, but alignment with the organisation’s Core Value system is nonnegotiable. With the right blend of technology-backed skill sets and a values-driven attitude, we are confident that our teams will live our purpose as we move towards our mission. We also plan for sporting events which I am sure serves as a good time-out from our busy event calendar. ES: How do you perceive the changing dynamics of technology in our industry? How can technology assist show organisers in future? BS: Technology plays a crucial role in helping organisers design a holistic experience for visitors and exhibitors. Following the pandemic, we have adopted increased digitisation of internal operations to fully leverage the power of automation and improve customer experience by reducing turnaround times. Customer experience before, during and after each of our trade fairs is very important for us and measuring these outcomes through NPS is something we are passionately working towards. The exhibition industry’s NPS for on-site exhibitions is currently -15, so we have a long road to improve customer centricity. Thankfully, NPS for online exhibitions stands at -50, so we can be sure that our focus on onsite shows is in the right direction. Due to our compliance with EU’s data privacy laws, we avoid invasive technologies that build on visitors’ personal information. However, we use various technology tools to develop experiences that respect visitors’ time invested with us. And this has an immediate impact on the exhibitor and helps him to strategize which segment should be placed where and why.

Our experience shows us that online events might not be the best substitute for face-to-face networking, but it is necessary to keep developing them for hybrid formats in industries where they are relevant. We have identified a very niche segment of show visitors who actively participate in online events and thus, they are a vital value addition to the main on-site events. ES: Please share with us the highlights of your recently concluded shows and what key takeaways can be taken out of them? BS: The first half of 2022 so far has concluded on a confident note, with Indian Ceramics Asia, analytica Anacon India, and India Lab Expo receiving excellent response.

31-2 June 2022, at the Grand Hyatt, Mumbai. This is the world's leading trade fair for logistics, mobility, IT, and supply chain management. ES: How do you see the evolving role of trade fairs and their relevance in the coming years? BS: This post-pandemic growth phase is an exciting time to be in the trade fairs business. Various estimates peg the CAGR of the Indian events and exhibitions industry to be in double digits. There is a dire need for on-site events in every industry imaginable in order to recover from the pandemic lull, leapfrog innovations to meet post-pandemic necessities, and establish new trade networks and connections that might have been impacted due to supply chain disruptions. As the world order changes due to geopolitical crises and new manufacturing hubs displacing conventional ones, the Indian trade fairs industry will play a pivotal role in realising the country’s aspirations for selfreliance and sustainable consumption. ES: Please share with us your plans for the rest of the year and beyond.

Indian Ceramics Asia saw enthusiastic participation from the business community, with over 100 exhibiting companies from 11 countries. Participants from Bangladesh, China, Germany, India, Iran, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Turkey, UK, United Arab Emirates, and others showcased their solutions and innovations to the visitors. In terms of visitors, the 16th edition of Indian Ceramics Asia saw 6,440 visitors.

BS: In the coming quarters, we are looking forward to some of our leading shows like electronica India and productronica India, IFAT India, drink technology India, PACK MACH, World Tea & Coffee Expo, and bauma CONEXPO INDIA 2023. Another exciting new avenue for us is the South Africa market where we have already planned three shows in 2023—air cargo Africa, IFAT Africa, and analytica Lab Africa. In keeping with our focus on improving customer experience, we will continue to innovate with our trusted exhibition brands and deliver value to our loyal industry partners. This year’s exhibitions will see more contentfocussed conferences, buyer-seller meets, and networking opportunities, in addition to product displays. ES: Exhibition Excellence Awards are back in 2022. Please share with us your comments and feedback about this initiative and its relevance.

analytica Anacon India and India Lab Expo 2022 attracted nearly 4,000 visitors at the Bombay Exhibition Centre, giving much cheer to the laboratory equipment and analytical sector that was looking for an ideal platform to bridge them with business opportunities post the pandemic. Our next show air cargo India is scheduled from 31 May 33 | www.exhibi onshowcase.com

BS: This is a relevant platform for the Indian exhibitions fraternity to get together, collaborate and celebrate the good work being done in the industry. In the spirit of ‘united we stand’ this awards program can help us collectively overcome challenges and inspire us to see the larger picture when taking focussed decisions for our organization’s growth. Like every year, I will look forward to this positive and motivating event this year too.

THE DOMESTIC MARKET FEATURES A NUMBER OF PECULIARITIES

CORRADO PERABONI CEO AT ITALIAN EXHIBITION GROUP

ES. What convinced you that it was important to get involved and ultimately serve in a leadership role? Please take us through your professional journey since inception and some major milestones achieved over the years.

ES. IEG Group has a global network of subsidiary companies. How do you see IEG Group's journey unfolding over the years the timeline of major developments?

Corrado Peraboni. To be honest, I got involved in the trade show world almost by chance about 26 years ago when I represented the Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs at the trade fair organising body in my city.

Corrado Peraboni. Two years ago, just before the pandemic, IEG launched an ambitious international expansion project. For years we have been the national leader in terms of turnover from directly organised events and we wanted to take this expertise outside Italy. With topclass partners, we are now active in Dubai, Brazil and Mexico and have a consolidated presence in China. During 2022 we will be announcing three more important operations that we have been working on for months.

I was so fascinated by this world that I decided to make a career of it, starting from less operational roles and then becoming a manager in companies that directly organised exhibitions. My first experience with a global organiser was the years I spent on the Board of FMI, a joint venture between Fiera Milano and the then Reed Exhibition. When my experience in Milan came to an end, and before starting my experience at IEG, I also enjoyed launching an event as an entrepreneur: the Milan Pet Week.

RiminiWellness Corrado Peraboni. If I had to pinpoint a common trend in all these years, I would say it is the increasing internationality. The pandemic will not stop this trend but it will change it profoundly: the big shows that are able to attract overseas visitors will need much more time to catch up with 2019 levels, if they ever do. For trade show organisers, the international post-pandemic challenge will be having their products directly organised in more markets. In short, I think exhibitors will travel more than visitors and if they don't travel with us, they will do so with one of our competitors. ES. What is the state of the Exhibition sector in Italy? Are there any trends shaping the Exhibition sector in Italy today?

nature of many organisers, i.e., associations, contributes to the fact that the costs of participating in a fair are among the lowest in mature markets. ES. How have you adapted to the new reality in the meetings industry, which is much more digital and hybrid? Corrado Peraboni. It was important to discover, after the pandemic, that the standard set-up for the future of congresses and events will be a format that fully recaptures the in-person formula while absorbing the digital, thus enabling it to reach new targets, especially abroad, as well as

Corrado Peraboni. The domestic market, one of the most important, features a number of peculiarities, for example: the big international players are almost totally absent (among the few, RX with MCE); very few private entrepreneurs organise more than one show; many of the major fairs are organised by trade associations. These things will cause some problems for our trade show system; one only has to think of the difficulties that associations, whose events have become international by bringing buyers from other continents here, may encounter in organising shows in different markets. In fact, in Italy, the non-profit

to be modular, both in the offer and the perceived value of content. In short, conferences and events have not become more hybrid or more digital, they have become “also” hybrid and digital in a complementary way to the traditional inperson formula. ES. What are your thoughts on issues that you believe will pose significant challenges and opportunities for the exhibition industry in the coming times? Corrado Peraboni. In the hope that the problems of the pandemic and geopolitical tensions will soon be overcome, I would say the need to attract talent to our industry. For some years now it has been difficult to convince young talents, who often see trade fairs as out-ofdate, that this is actually a very dynamic sector. After two years of closure, many of the candidates we selected were afraid to enter an industry that has suffered so many difficulties. We are thinking of initiatives to promote in universities to explain how embarking on a career in our sector can be a really smart move. ES. Sitting at the helm of affairs at IEG Group, you must have kept a keen eye on the morale of your employees through the crisis. How did you manage to keep them engaged, inspired, efficient & effective during these hard times? Corrado Peraboni. Let's start with the most important fact: nobody at IEG lost their job because of the pandemic. Everyone, from top management to blue collar workers, gave up something and we came out of it with an even stronger team spirit. During the pandemic, our #IEGNONSIFERMA (Iegdoesntstop) project kept all of our human capital in

36 | www.exhibi onshowcase.com

contact and active and it is no coincidence that numerous business development projects were devised during that period. ES. What are some of the most iconic shows of IEG Group that you are particularly fond of (across various regions) and why? Corrado Peraboni. I would say RiminiWellness (which we are replicating with different formats in Dubai, Mexico and Brazil) due to its dynamism; Ecomondo/Key Energy for their topicality; Vicenzaoro (Gold and Jewellery) for its leadership position; Sigep (sweet and ice cream) for its ability to represent Italian food excellence. These are all products that we are replicating on international markets, either alone or in partnership with other global players. ES. On another note, what do you enjoy the most about your work? Please share your hobbies, what keeps you busy when you are away from work? Corrado Peraboni. I'm a very inquisitive person, so working with a portfolio that ranges from jewellery to beer-bottling machines is really nice because I get to learn about so many different sectors. As for hobbies... since Aleksandra, my first daughter, arrived 21 months ago, I spend every spare minute being a dad. All that's left then is a few good books to read when she falls asleep. ES. Would you like to share any message with the industry? Corrado Peraboni. We are an industry that regularly faces moments of incredible disruption but so far, we have always bounced back, perhaps because we have intangible pillars, in other words, the people who work with us.

May 2022

The Great SHOWMAN I started working with them a few weeks later. I stayed with Clarion for around 4 years. I loved it, I worked with some people that when on to become industry legends, Simon Kimble, Dominic Jones, Nicola Bateman, Andy Baxter, Nigel Nathan, Nicky Barr, Cartsen Holm and so many more. I later got the chance to move to London Event Co and work with Rob MacKenzie and Tim Etchells. Looking back I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have so much access to minds of some of the industries greats from such an early age. I learnt so much from all of them and will always be grateful for the time they gave me. I joined forces with John Bednall and Nick Field to set up Legend Exhibitions and launch Retail Business Technology Show (RBTE) in 2011. By 2016 we had added a design and digital signage element, launched 2 publications, Essential Retail and Retail Design World and the show had become the biggest of its kind in Europe. In 2017 we sold the business to Reed Exhibitions and as part of the agreement, and as the face of the show, I moved across with the event, which we later rebranded to Retail Expo.

MATT

Bradley Director at Nineteen Group ES. Please take us through your professional journey since inception and some major milestones achieved over the years? Matt Bradley. I started working in the exhibition industry as sales exec around the year 2000. I worked as part of in the organising arm of the Business Design Centre in Islington. The show I worked on was a launch called Mode and aimed at this high end gift and furniture industry. After year 1 the business decided not to run it again. I learnt very quickly that disappoint is never too far away in this industry. We had a rival show run by Clarion called Top Drawer. I called as soon as our show was cancelled and, thanks to some favourable feedback from some of our shared clients,

Sadly in 2019 due to the pandemic Reed Exhibitions took the decision to no longer run RetailExpo which left both me without a job and retail tech industry without a flagship show. I was quicky approached by several exhibition companies with offers to revive the show with them. Ironically after quite a few meetings with quite a few suitors it only took a 10 minute chat with Peter Jones and Alison Jackson for me to realise that the best place to relaunch would be Nineteen Group. ES. You are the driving force behind the launch of Retail Technology Show with Nineteen Group. In what ways have you brought Retail Technology Show to the

May 2022 Technology Show 2022 and to whom would you attribute the success of this show? Matt Bradley. So many to mention, selling out the show 7 weeks before the event, the incredible speaker line up including Tinie Tempah, Sam Jones, Mike Coupe and Ella Mills, the Big Reunion Party at the end of day one and so many more. But a moment that really sticks out for me is, on day one at 9am, I announced over the public address system that Retail Technology Show 2022 was now open. I’ve done this hundreds of times before on previous shows and people rarely raise and eye brow.

forefront? What does it take to succeed a business? Matt Bradley. There’s an expression, no passion, no point. I have incredible passion for this industry and for RTS and I think people within the industry can see that. I have a team who share that passion and are equally driven and again people can see that. I am fully immersed in the retail technology industry and take my role as event director of their flagship show very seriously. I spend time with our exhibitors and visitors to try to truly understand the issues they are facing. I’m not and have never been interested in running the “biggest” retail tech show, I’m interested in running the very best and that means we design an event that is relevant to the industry that its serving both exhibitors and visitors who will find benefit from attending.

But this time every exhibitor stopped what they were doing, stood, clapped and cheered. I’ve never felt anything like that. The relief and happiness of an industry that had been through turmoil finally about to be reunited was so visible. It was a very special moment, one that really overwhelmed me and one I’ll never forget. That’s why the success of the show isn’t down to me, my team or Nineteen Group. Its down to every exhibitor, for the incredible stands they built, for every email they sent and every social media update they posted. To the speakers who gave up their time, who shared their insight and knowledge to an audience who were desperate for some sort of road map and to every visitor who attended the show, who took meetings with our exhibitors and who joined to reunite an industry. This show was for them, by them.

I despise corporate, I despise the conventional opinion of what a trade show should look like. With RTS I have tried to be as creative as possible. Whether that’s through the look and feel of the event, the conference programme or the marketing messages and route to market. I ripped up the “rule book” and its worked. I expect a more to follow our lead. ES. Can you tell us what were the highlights of the Retail

continue to live up to expectations. We mustn’t sit back, we must continue to evolve, continue to listen to our markets and in my opinion continue to rip up the conventional.

Matt Bradley. We’ve seen a great surge. As mentioned stand space sold out with 6 weeks to go – unheard of on a launch event and we rebooked 81% on site. Events are well truly back! And although the visitor pre-reg spike came later in the marketing cycle than perhaps we’re used to, we did meet the ambitious targets that we set ourselves. We also saw a significant uplift with a walk up registrations.

ES. What does a normal working day in your life look like? Please take us through the course of your day from the time you wake up till the time you retire to bed.

ES. The exhibitions and events industry, like the rest of the world, has experienced rapid change. What are the most significant changes you've witnessed during your time in the industry? Matt Bradley. If there is one good thing to come out of the last 2 years it’s that people have realised the importance of face to face events. The novelty of working from home and zoom meetings soon wore off for the majority of us and it wasn’t long before people were craving for human interaction. As organisers we have both a great opportunity but also a great responsibility to ensure face to face events

39 | www.exhibi onshowcase.com

Matt Bradley. It varies from day to day which is one of the reasons I enjoy it so much. The only constant is I take an hour every day to go to the gym. I tend to do this in the middle of day and normally come back with a hundred new ideas to pitch to the team. Just having that hour away from the office in a different environment really helps to reinvigorate me. I love meeting clients and talking through the issues and finding ways that I can make RTS even more relevant to our industry. I tend to work quite late, I’m not unknown to send emails, texts or more recently voice notes late in to the evening or at weekends. This isn’t because I’m a workaholic, its because my memory is terrible and so when I have an idea I need to get it to the people that can action it as soon as possible!!

Message From The Desk Of Kai Hattendorf, MD & CEO, UFI am just off a call where a colleague, sounding equally excited and exhausted, shared the results from a show they had run in the past days in Europe. I sensed the pride, and the emotions, and could congratulate on the success (more buyers than at the last show pre-pandemic!). We ended the call, and I noticed that I had gotten goosebumps.

I

In this month on May, leading up to our 7th Global Exhibitions Day, we are an industry that – in most parts of the world – is busier than ever. Shows are back, calendars are tight. Buyers buy, and sellers sell. Experts and leaders meet. Ideas are born. A buyer at a show told me he has not seen so many new products at a single B2B show before. He paused, and then said how impressive it was to see how

his industry had managed to “soldier through” the pandemic. Global Exhibitions Day, on June 1st this year, is the day when we can put a spotlight on this, and if the past years have taught us one lesson, then it is that we have to stand tall as the exhibitions and business events industry, globally, and highlight the important role that we have to play. When it matters, people meet. In real life. On site. Not onscreen.

Trade shows and exhibitions are the fastest of all fast track to drive economic development postpandemic. As an industry, we know (and have proven) that we can operate business events safely. And we will challenge them to reflec on their own behaviour: When it matters, leaders meet in person. Business acts the same way! Finally, to people who we want to attract to work with us, we can showcase that we offer career opportunities in a vibrant industry, and that they cab thrive in our fastmoving environment that empowers human contacts.

Together with dozens of industry associations around the world, and with many of the leading organisers, we have developed clear and concise core messages for GED. We will tell our customers that we help them to grow their business, and show them that business happens best when people meet face-to-face.

Please, do join in on GED – find out how, and what others around the world are doing on www.globalexhibitionsday.org.

Message From UFI President - Monica Lee-Müller

’m delighted to share that preparations for the UFI European Conference, taking place during 4 to 6 May in Poznan, Poland, is well underway. The UFI team has been busy making sure this first face to face regional UFI conference since the pandemic started will be a successful, educational, and enriching experience for everyone.

I

I’m particularly proud of the humanitarian effort in Poznan and I hope many of you will extend further support. In addition, our conference host Grupa MTP is celebrating their 100th anniversary! With so many good reasons to participate, if you still haven’t registered, it’s not too late!

42 | www.exhibi onshowcase.com

Another great event soon after is the UFI LATAM Conference during 11 to 12 May in Buenos Aires. It will be an excellent platform for members to learn and share opportunities in this growth region. Recently I had an inspiring experience chairing the jury of industry leaders for this year’s UFI Next Generation Leadership Grant (NGL). The high-quality submissions by young people from all over the world were most impressive, demonstrating their creativity and communication skills. In fact, the standard was so high we had difficulty shortlisting winners. The jury finally decided to extend the number of NGL recipients from five

to six! These selected candidates from around the world will embark on a group project to develop a dynamic talent narrative for the exhibition industry. I eagerly look forward to their presentation at the UFI Global Congress in Oman in November 2022. With GED on 1 June fast approaching, let’s join hands to once again put our industry in the spotlight. The 2022 GED will focus on the irreplaceable value of physical exhibitions. After the prolonged pandemic, it’s perfect timing to advocate the contribution of exhibitions to local and global economies. I look forward to your active participation.

15th Singapore International Energy Week To Focus On “A Resilient And Sustainable Energy Future” he Energy Market Authority (EMA) has unveiled “A Resilient and Sustainable Energy Future” as the theme for the 15th edition of the Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW) 2022. The theme reflects how the global energy community has accelerated the pursuit of a greener future. Following the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) last year, there is strong momentum for countries to do more to decarbonise their economies and ride the green wave to reduce emissions. Recent events have also shown how sensitive energy markets are to geopolitical events, pushing energy security to the forefront of the global agenda.

T

Asia, which accounts for almost half of the global energy demand, faces urgency to accelerate the deployment of renewables, fortify grid infrastructure, strengthen supply chain resilience of key fuels and develop regional interconnections to enhance security while keeping electricity accessible and affordable

The event will also discuss the opportunities and challenges as the region scales up investments for a green economy, and what roles can investors and financiers play.

Against this backdrop, SIEW 2022 will discuss how the global energy community can ensure secure, diverse and resilient energy supply even as the world undergoes an energy transition. There will also be a focus on how governments and industries will work together to catalyse regional grid development and global supply chains for low carbon solutions such as hydrogen and carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) and advance the development of renewable energy solutions such as

New HEPA Filters For The Re-Start: Messe Düsseldorf Ensures Highest Air Quality And Increases Energy Efficiency or the re-start of trade fair operations Messe Düsseldorf has a new technical highlight in store: the halls hosting the first 2022 fairs – BEAUTY and TOP HAIR – as well as Congress Center Düsseldorf CCD will be completely equipped with HEPA filters. These high-efficiency particulate air filters introduce clinically clean air into the halls while at the same time reducing heating and cooling energy consumption. By the end of June 2022, the complete Düsseldorf Exhibition and Congress Centre will be equipped with HEPA filters.

F

This means that the first Düsseldorf trade fairs in 2022, BEAUTY (6 – 8 May) and TOP HAIR (7 – 9 May), as well as the forthcoming conventions, meetings and events by Düsseldorf Congress will be held in best purified air. international trade fairs for wire, cable and tubes, wire and Tube, are held from 20 – 24 June. 80% of the EUR 1.4 million invested were paid by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection as part of a funding programme. Stressing the advantages for the re-start, Wolfram N. Diener, President & CEO of Messe Düsseldorf, says: “Our new HEPA filters help to ensure that we can offer all guests the greatest possible protection during our trade fairs. In combination with our highperformance ventilation system, our voluntary hygiene measures, our spacious premises and halls, we reduce the infection risk to a minimum. After two pandemic years and a period of intense digital communication participants can feel safe when networking, initiating business deals and experiencing innovations in person again.”

Contribution to sustainability HEPA filters complement and relieve the already powerful ventilation systems at Messe Düsseldorf. The fully automatic system with 60,000 measuring points safeguards optimal air quality and supplies the halls with ten million cubic metres of fresh outside air via ten kilometres of ventilation pipes every hour. Bernhard J. Stempfle, Managing Director Finance and Infrastructure, emphasises the efficiency: “HEPA filters reduce the heating and cooling energy consumption of our ventilation systems and enable their energetically sensible operation. When outside temperatures are low we can mix the outside air supplied with warm hall air, thereby reducing the heating requirements and still achieve clinically clean incoming air. This means that the HEPA filters also make an important contribution to sustainable trade fairs.”

Mr Dingley said APPMA has run its flagship event, AUSPACK, since 1985. “We’re proud of how AUSPACK has grown, and the value that it gives exhibitors and visitors. AUSPACK is more than just a packaging-only exhibition, it is a show aimed at encompassing the total processing and packaging sector – from machinery, ancillary equipment, materials, packaging, and food processing, right through to industry services. Now is the right time to truly bring everyone

together across the spectrum of processing and packaging into one show. “APPEX will be one exhibition for the industry, run by the industry.” Mr Dingley said in representing Australia’s leading packaging and processing machinery and allied component companies, the APPMA aims to promote, integrate, and foster participation and development at all levels of the packaging and processing machinery industry. Tania Carey, GM of Food Processing Equipment Australia & New Zealand, said, “We had never thought joining APPMA until we learned about these changes. This is a great change for the industry in Australia and one we believe will set future expos on an exciting new path.” Mr Dingley said the transition to APPEX will occur after

the current AUSPACK is completed, with APPEX running in March 2024, and every three years thereafter. The event will be anchored in Melbourne. “Three yearly is an optimal cycle for a large show with more exhibitors and visitors, it is a neater flow with other international shows and facilitates better alignment with developments in new technology. APPMA chose Melbourne for its position as Australia’s premier venue for holding larger shows, with facilities allowing APPEX and Processing & Packaging Week to grow while still retaining AUSPACK’s renowned experience. Operationally, the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre site facilitates easier move-in and move-out for exhibitors.” Mr Dingley said benefits of APPEX include having the largest showcase of processing and packaging equipment, thus attracting more targeted visitors across all of industry. APPEX ’24 will be held in Melbourne from 12-15 March, 2024.

“Infrastructure Is The Key To Boost Indian Economy”: Basavaraj Bommai To Construction Equipment Industry - EXCON 2022 he infrastructure sector is receiving an intense push from the Government, propelling India’s overall development and GDP. The new policies announced by the Government of India would ensure the time-bound creation of world-class infrastructure in the country, making it India’s new identity globally,” said Basavaraj Bommai, Chief Minister, Government of Karnataka.

T

Delivering his inaugural address at the 11th edition of CII EXCON, South Asia’s largest construction equipment trade fair organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in Bengaluru on May 17, Basavaraj said that the construction sector will have a major contribution to Prime Minister’s vision to make India a USD 5 trillion economy. To achieve this goal, the government is embarking on major infrastructure and industrial projects worth Rs. 100 lakh crores. “Though our major focus should be growing exponentially in the country by advancing our technologies, inclusion of people at the bottom of the pyramid is also critical since they are the movers of the economy. We urge the industries to collaborate with them to further enable the CE sector,” he said. The Minister mentioned that the state presents huge business opportunities for the construction industry, as it is embarking on major infrastructure development projects in roads and flyovers, industrial infrastructure and power. Participating as the Guest of Honour, General V K Singh, Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways, Government of India, said, “India is an

emerging hub for construction equipment, component outsourcing base and design base. The private players in the construction industry must concentrate on automation, adoption of advanced technologies and global best practices, usage of alternate fuels, and innovations in using waste materials as raw materials for their construction projects to diminish the cost of construction and rate of pollution.” “Infrastructure must be sustainable and the industry should take measures to enhance the quality at an affordable life cycle cost. India is working hard on hydrogen fuel technology and solar energy since we consider it as the future of the country. The CE industry must be prepared for the competitive market situation and focus on Industry 4.0 for revamping itself,” V K Singh added. Deepak Shetty, Chairman of CII EXCON, said that, “This is the eleventh edition of the EXCON and our theme this year is Building India for a New World: Competitiveness, Growth, Sustainability, Technology. India must become less dependent on imports to build large scale infrastructure projects, roads, ports, etc. Hence, developing

and embracing technologies is crucial so that we can expand our innovations and become an export hub globally. The three key strategies that will help us to fast-track developments are – focusing on new growth drivers, understanding the significance of rural economy and curate a roadmap for alternate fuels.” The role of smart technologies and innovation in India’s infrastructure development is paramount in achieving the vision of making India the global hub for construction equipment manufacturing. As a result, there is a need for rapid investments across infrastructure for sustainable development in the country. While proposing the vote of thanks, Dimitrov Krishnan, Cochairman of EXCON, said, “Indian CE industry, being the 3rd largest market in the world, has shown remarkable progress over the years. We aim to become the 2nd largest CE market in the world. OICA Announces Global Decarbonization Policy Framework he International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (OICA) on May 16, announced a global review of road transport decarbonization – reflecting a commitment by OICA’s members to develop specific policy recommendations to support broader efforts to achieve carbon neutrality. OICA believes a broad look at all emission sources, including energy generation to build and power vehicles, is important to achieve the shared goal of decarbonization.

T

OICA President John Bozzella noted: “Electrification is the future of transportation and key to achieving carbon neutrality, but it is not a silver bullet for all nations. OICA represents auto production nations in all corners of the world and recognizes the importance of a technology neutral, multi-pronged policy approach to make progress on transportation decarbonization is required.” OICA’s work will be guided by these principles: Decarbonization of road transport should be flexible and structured to individual countries. Ÿ

Technology neutrality and multiple approaches are necessary to provide individual nations the required flexibility to account for variations in geography, socioeconomics, geopolitics and other factors.

requires government and industry participation as well as investment commitments from entire ecosystem. From shifts in power generation, investments in new charging or refueling infrastructure, and the evolution of the existing supply base, the collective success in decarbonizing road transport extends well beyond the automotive sector. The member countries are committed to the improvement of road safety and environmental protection, and they actively contribute to the global harmonization of technical regulations and standards. OICA also collects and publishes international statistics and coordinates the yearly calendar of Motor shows all over the world.

Bozzella, who also serves as the President and CEO of US – based Alliance for Automotive Innovation, added: “This doesn’t mean that every nation must – or should – adopt the same strategy for carbon neutrality. Instead, the global auto industry is committed to unique and customized solutions with workable policies necessary to achieve a cleaner future.” The world association OICA was

A Global Show With Many Micro-Moments: IMEX In Frankfurt Returns 31 May – 2 June xhibitors from 90+ countries will be represented at IMEX in Frankfurt taking place 31 May – 2 June. This includes a large number of Asian destinations – Thailand, Philippines, Taiwan and Hong Kong among others – as well as all the key European countries plus a strong presence from North & South America, including Canada, Brazil and Costa Rica.

E

This year’s edition sees the largest ever African representation, including Rwanda, Tunisia, Uganda and South Africa, with Ethiopia using IMEX to launch its new convention bureau. Middle Eastern destinations also make a strong showing and include Dubai, Israel, Abu Dhabi and Qatar. Carina Bauer, CEO of the IMEX Group, explains: “The scale of this year’s show reflects how the events sector is truly back in business and starting to thrive again. Demand for face to face events has bounced back in a big way – there are three major tradeshows taking place concurrently at Messe Frankfurt alongside ours and this is the first time that’s happened in our 20 year history.” IMEX in Frankfurt, at its core a global marketplace, has also evolved to reflect the current climate for planners. With many event professionals now facing challenges around budgets, resources, supply chains and recruitment, the show has been designed to include many micro-moments specifically tailored to support the individual as well as education and discussion designed for particular roles and responsibilities.

52 | www.exhibi onshowcase.com

IMEX is supporting specialists with dedicated learning for association, agency and corporate executives taking place the day before the show, on Monday 30 May. Exclusively Corporate is set to welcome experts from SAP, Bolt Financial and Siemens Healthineers (as well as a former Premier League Footballer and high performance coach) for case study-led education and peer-to-peer discussions. Agency planners can shape the focus of IMEX’s co-created Agency Directors Forum, choosing what best fits their needs from subjects including: growth opportunities; adapting to a changed event landscape; trends and technology impacting business strategy, and expectations of clients and employees around DEI (Diversity, Equity & Inclusion). Separately, Association Focus will deliver learning and networking exclusively for association professionals of all levels. The collaborative programme offers insight, inspiration and real-world recommendations and resolutions to the challenges facing associations across the world today.

Underpinning this series of tailored events is the show’s wider programme of free learning where all attendees can choose from 150+ educational events to create an individual programme of forward-thinking professional and personal development to suit their own needs. Tracks include: Trends & Future foresight; Professional Development and Upskilling; Creativity in Communication; Diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility; Innovation and Tech; and Purposeful Recovery. “We’re set to give the global business events community the value, connections and support that it needs right now. IMEX in Frankfurt is a show that’s international in scope, but with many smaller value-intensive moments blended in – from face to face business meetings, coffee catch ups, dedicated learning and discussions designed for different sectors of the industry. We’re really excited to see how the industry is building forwards again and look forward to welcoming our community back to IMEX in Frankfurt later this month,” concludes Carina.

Gainingedge Ranks Intellectual Capital Of Conference Destinations lobal convention industry consulting firm, GainingEdge, has launched its second annual report on Leveraging Intellectual Capital of convention destinations, based on its analysis of international association leadership.

G

The research underpinning this report identifies the relative strengths of 350 destinations via the presence of their local intellectual leaders in the governing bodies of international associations that organize large conventions (500+ attendees). In this report, Intellectual Capital is described as a destination’s strength of representation in international association leadership. Key findings of the report include: A Top 50 ranking of destinations (cities & countries/territories) with the greatest influence in international associations. Ÿ How well destinations leverage their local leaders by engaging them to bring conventions to the city (We term this as their “Harnessing Ratio” or the correlation between number of international association meetings hosted or booked over the last 4 years (2018-2021) and number of local intellectual leaders on boards of international associations). Ÿ

Milos Milovanovic, Head of GainingEdge Analysis and Research (GEAR), said, “In addition to the analysis in our 2020 report, this year we expanded our research to obtain data about the members on boards of international associations which also organize smaller meetings i.e., those with attendance between 200 and 499 delegates. This

57 | www.exhibi onshowcase.com

additional data will enable us to do Intellectual Capital Segmentation where we filter the available intellectual capital of each city by the size of the meetings and also provide insights into the available intellectual capital in the industry sectors the destination is particularly interested in. This means that destinations with fewer resources can focus on priority segments and achieve improved results in business development and improve their ‘hubs of excellence’ branding.” The report found a very high level of correlation between GainingEdge’s intellectual capital rankings and their International Convention Destination Competitive Index 2021 global rankings. The top 20 cities in terms of intellectual capital are all among the top 30 most competitive destinations in the said Competitiveness Index. “Our research shows London again at the top, followed by Paris, Tokyo, with Beijing surpassing New York this year, indicating once again that these cities are true global knowledge hubs with strong influence in international associations,” Milovanovic added. “These five cities are key global knowledge hubs which concentrate over 10% of the total available intellectual capital, with 2,756 local leaders active.” In addition, destinations that experienced the greatest increase in the influence of their local leaders on boards compared to the previous year are: Sydney with its leaders active in 46 additional boards, followed by Kuala Lumpur and Singapore (with +34 more each) and

Seoul (+28). Jon Sivertson, GainingEdge’s CEO, said, “We see Intellectual Capital Engagement as a key to success for a meetings destination. Cities need to explore who are their local leaders with a strong international reputation, and how to engage them. Our Harnessing Ratio provides a great starting point for assessing how to leverage intellectual capital and what action destinations should take to increase its use. By identifying sectors that the destination wants to support and promote, convention bureaus can choose to bid for meetings of associations that strongly contribute to the development of these sectors and take a lead in the strategic implementation of the city`s economic development.” Sivertson continued: “All meeting destinations aspire to increase their conversion or bid win rate. In order to achieve this, destinations should undertake ‘smart’ bid strategies. A very effective tool is to engage local leaders with a strong reputation to support their bids.”
