Dear readers, Greetings! In the words of Kevin Hart, “Everybody wants to be famous, but nobody wants to do the work. I live by that. You grind hard so you can play hard. At the end of the day, you put all the work in, and eventually it'll pay off. It could be in a year, it could be in 30 years. Eventually, your hard work will pay off.” In other words, there is no shortcut to success! Last month our special stories on 'Careers in Exhibi on Industry' and 'India Rising' got amazing response from the industry. Exhibi on Showcase is the only organisa on from India to be the media partners of UFI and we proudly represented India at the 86th UFI Global Congress in Bangkok, also known as the exhibi on industry's largest global mee ng of the year. Our content and publica ons were hugely appreciated by the global leaders. We also unveiled the Coffee Table Book of the Indian exhibi on industry.

New Zealand Trade Minister Want India In RCEP Pact
T
he 15 members of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) are commi ed to work with India before the trade agreement is signed, New Zealand's chief nego ator for the pact has said. “We would love to see India as part of the RCEP agreement. We understand the sensi vi es here domes cally and we are commi ed, all the 15 countries, to work with India before the final agreement can be reached,” Damien O'Connor, New Zealand's minister of state for trade and export growth, said on the sidelines of an interac on organised by the
Confedera on of Indian Industry here.India has said it remains open for further talks on the RCEP if its demands are met even though it is out of the pact for now and it put the onus on other countries to come out with a plan to address unresolved issues. “At the moment, our decision to not join is final,” commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal said on Tuesday, a day a er the conclusion of the pact in Bangkok. The pact is expected to be signed next year. India's key areas of concern include strict rules of origin, ecommerce, autotrigger mechanism, base rate, investment protec on and trade remedies. The country's significant trade deficit with China, too, is a major s cking point as it is feared to increase once RCEP is in place. Commen ng on when would
bilateral parleys begin with India and who would ini ate those, O'Connor said, “That's part of the nego a ons and discussions now. I can't prejudge what they might mean but clearly we s ll have good rela onships with all countries and whether India is part of the agreement, that's up for India and its ministers to decide, we hope they are”. Highligh ng that New Zealand will have good rela onships with India “regardless of what”, he said a trade agreement like RCEP will offer certainty. New Zealand is a member of RCEP and was pushing for opening up of India's dairy sector, triggering fears of dumping of dairy products from milk-surplus countries Australia and New Zealand. The minister said total produc on from New Zealand can only feed 40 million people and the country will focus on high value products to complement the dairy farmers in India. “We hope that we can work through to a posi on where Indian farmers and the minister himself can see the value including dairy,” he said.

Commen ng on the launch of the show, Mr. Wouter Molman, Execu ve Vice President Healthcare, Informa Markets, said: “The show firmly brings India Health into our family of global healthcare exhibi ons brands, which includes the trusted Arab Health Exhibi on and Congress. Recent reports have highlighted that the growing demand for quality healthcare and the absence of a matching delivery mechanism pose a great challenge in India. This launch event will allow us to facilitate business interac on within the growing Indian healthcare market and provide a springboard to growth drivers.” He further added, “One of the other common challenges that
companies o en face in the Indian healthcare market is the lack of connec on and rela onships with the right healthcare en es, authori es and associa ons in India. India Health will help bridge this gap.” The three-day event will take place in New Delhi’s Praga Maidan and host 300 plus interna onal and local exhibitors from a variety of sectors ranging from disposables and consumables through to high-tech imaging and diagnos c equipment. The show will welcome 4,000 plus key decision makers and stakeholders right from hospital directors, doctors, medical prac oners, government policymakers, medical laboratory technicians, distributors and traders. As the second most populous country in the world, India has become one of the fastest growing healthcare markets globally, both in terms of revenue and employment. The country’s healthcare market is all set to increase three-fold to US$ 372 billion by 2022. Ÿ India is expected to rank amongst the top three healthcare markets in terms of incremental growth. Ÿ The country will generate 40 million jobs by 2020. Ÿ Projec ons are that US$ 200 billion Ÿ
will be spent on medical infrastructure by 2024. The medical device market is expected to reach US$ 11 billion by 2022. India has emerged as a hub for R&D ac vi es for interna onal players due to the rela vely low cost of clinical research. India imports nearly 80 per cent of its medical devices. The cost of surgery in India is about one-tenth of that in the U.S. This has helped in a rac ng medical tourists and the value of India’s medical tourism industry is forecasted to reach US$ 9 billion by 2020.
The show will a ract interna onal par cipa on and offer access to those who haven’t been able to enter this vast market yet. Mr. Yogesh Mudras, Managing Director, for Informa Markets India, highlighted: “India’s healthcare sector at present is growing at 15.8 per cent Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) for a plethora of reasons. India Health will bring together the key players in the global market to meet and do business with the Indian healthcare sector and to capitalise on this growth.” “A significant percentage of purchasers of medical devices are private medical ins tu ons and hospitals. Due to increased compe on in Tier I ci es, private enterprises have started to focus on Tier II and Tier III ci es, a market which is un l now untapped in India. As private enterprises expand in lesser explored markets, the demand for medical devices will expand propor onally, and India Health will help the industry tap that poten al.” He further added.

Cross-Marke ng And Cross-Selling In The Exhibi on Industry
T
he exhibi on industry is unique because it doesn't just serve one sector but many very different sectors. This brings benefits but also challenges, as show organisers have totailor their team set-up to the specific show and industry they are serving at any given me. It can also make cross-departmental exchange of marke ng and sales techniques harder than for other industries. For example, in the finance industry, product por olios can be different but they ul mately all s ll cater to financial requirements. To successfully promote a show in a specific industry, the strategy should be focussed on that par cular industry and should not be a simple duplica on of a generic show marke ng campaign. In the same way, the sales processes should be setup to serve this specific show. This approach, more o en than not, will result in a marke ng and sales team tha s highly specialised in the industry that their show serves. It also results in the sales team becoming extremely familiar with the exhibitor and visitor group, making them more effec ve in crea ng a targeted sales campaign that is unique to the industry and show itself, forging stronger rela onships, links and hopefully
show loyalty, as the years progress. While there are many benefits to this typical setup, there are also disadvantages to be aware of. A good example is when the lines of business and camaraderie become blurred. Although a close rela onship between the sales team and exhibitors can promote great sales results and can o en guarantee repeat business, such familiarity can also hamper sales. A sales person who considers contacts as friends first and clients second, may not be as asser ve when it comes to up selling. Another disadvantageis that a dedicated show team set-up can work against the ongoing organisa onal need to balance sales and marke ng resources to increase profitability and work efficiency. A show cycle requires different resources at different mes, so sales teams that only serve one show are o en under-staffed at mes when sales need a pusher overstaffed when a show is just over and exhibitors need to reflect on results before rebooking. Balancing resources is much harder to manage when a team is only commi ed to one show. A further disadvantage is that dedicated
sales teams o en have a lower success rate in closing new business leads. This is because the poten al client is only offered one op on and they are more likely to say ÒnoÓ if that op on does not fit their needs. A show por olio offering a range of shows gives a client more choice and is therefore more likely to be successful. In other words, a por olio of show seeable a customer-centric sales and marke ng strategy that is focussed on what the exhibitor needs and not what the show organiser is trying to sell. The challenges above may cause a show organiser to underu lise their resources as they are not able to leverage their teams effec vely and efficiently as they would like to. To solve this problem, there are two poten al solu ons: 1. To set up a sales and marke ng matrix spanning different business units that sells a por olio of shows serving the same industry. This approach is something that some show organisers have already started to do. The idea is that show teams serving the same industry are trained to sell a range of shows in different countries and con nents, depending on where
29 | November | www.exhibi onshowcase.com
Perspec ve the customer is most interested in and on which sales lead is most likely to be closed. To serve this sales and marke ng strategy, common systems for pipeline management and internal company communica on are extremely important. Sales departments must learn how to collaborate across the normal boundaries of business units and show teams. This can generate push back as change is never easy. However, in prac ce, this setup can prove very rewarding for teams due to the interna onal nature of sales. This solu on works well for larger show organisers because many shows in the same sector are needed to execute such a strategy. 2. To set up sales and marke ng teams that can operate across different industry sectors. The idea here is that sales func ons, such as lead genera on, lead nurturing or rebooking, can be executed by specialised sales teams that are trained to jump across industry sectors, whilst lead closing and key account management is taken care of by showspecific teams. The same applies to marke ng func ons, where generic social media campaigns and marke ng automa on processes can be organised by a more central team, whilst industryrelated marke ng can be managed by the
show team. This second solu on can work well for small to medium-sized show organisers that run different shows in fewer loca ons across different industry sectors. Both sales and marke ng strategies, if executed correctly, can liberate sales and marke ng resources and substan ally increase a company's per-head turnover. This is something we as an industry should not ignore as the fight for clients' marke ng budgets will only get harder in future. Trying to change a team's structure can o en trigger push back at the start, as most people don't like change. However, I've seen how a welldevised, cross-unit and cross-cultural sales and marke ng strategy can provide new purpose to the business life of our sales and marke ng colleagues as they act in a wider and more interna onal field. What's more, it can trigger profitability and enhance show quality. Some of our industry' sales and marke ng processes are quite under-developed compared to those of other industries. This means we are leaving money on the table for our compe tors. It's me to change this so that we can invest more money in innova on and quality for our tradeshows.

Networking At Events
G
1How to make networking an easy task for organisers and partcipants (both men & women)? When it comes to trade shows and exhibi ons, the ast majority of par cipa ts will expect some business deals and great networking opportuni es. Thats' why most trade show organisers create networking events or dedicated areas along with the show, where atendees meet for their specific purposes. But how do women and men fare when it comes to networking? For whom is it easier to mingle, engage in conversa ons with otal strangers (par cularly if th y dont' know anybody else in the crowd)and swap business cards? To my knowledge and personal experience, it is s ll not an eay task for women. Especially if they atend alone. According to the Women in exhibi ons report*, women judge that men are much beter at networking than they are. However, men consider women as equal players. So why is it so hard for us? I personally think that this is caused largely by cultural stereotypes and educa on. omen dare less to approach a group of strangers, to engage in a conversa on and o speak their own mind. 'Don't talk to strangers' was my
mothers' advice. So how do you do networking when at trade shows? Here are some s I would recommend for organisers to create successful networking opportuni es or both men and women. Know your crowd, engage in an icebreaker Get a dedicated 'networking manager.' This person should be somebody with diploma c skills, who kn ws the show well and the atendees well. He/she should engage effortlessly in conversaa on with newcomers and be ready to introduce them to the others around if necessary. Create events with a specific interest Organise dedicated networking events around a specific theme. For example, in a show for broadcasters (vast topic), organise a networking event uniquely for professionals interested in video compression facili es. A ain, a specific networking manager should know who the atendees are and what / who they are looking for. He/she can help atendees start conversa ons on ommon themes. Start 'festvalisaaon ' Especially the young crowd (but not only) can easily engage in networking in a fes e atmosphere. Less formal but extremely efficient, some organisers now
swear by event fes alisaa ons. When it comes to music it brings people together and strengthens social bonds. Music increases cultural cohesion, contact, coordina on, and ooperaa on with others. Whatever your tac cs, the most important is to keep your atendees happy and at ease while networking. Remember, they invest their me and money. The more successful their networking, the more likely are they to return to your show. You only need to step into any major market in the country to find yourself staring at huge, relentless sugges ons and tles and ima es of all the shops vying for your atenn on. One ver has to go far to find these banners as they are the common sight in any market place in the world. Flex and star flex are used for prin ng banner which needs o be hanged at home, events, exhibi ons tc. Whereas vinyl which comes in normal vinyl , eco vinyl or digital vinyl are used for pas ng on o any plain surface which can be wall, sunboard, sunpack, wooden board etc. Flex boards, as these boards are called, are made of a material called poly vinyl chloride. The use of this material for manufacturing flex boards has been the major cause of concern for the Na onal Geen Tribunal of India. The flex banners are made of poly-vinyl chloride. It causes a serious threat to the environment, as it is not biodegradable. Flex cannot be re-used or recycled. Made of synthe c polyme, it has to be burnt. When burnt, they emit toxic fumes that have serious effects on health. It can cause cancer and infer lit. The toxins released when the flex banners are burnt are carcinogenic (any substance, radionuclide, or radia on th t

These pollutants are heavier than air and form a thick blanket reducing the supply of oxygen in the vicinity. Plastc or flex by itself is not harmful. The problem begins when they are not recycled. They can choke the earth or clog the drain and when burnt, can release toxic fumes. Incinera on (burning t very high temperature) is an op on but it an be expensive though we can look at op ons to do it on a large scale. Expo 2020 ‘unlikely’ to halt Dubai’s property downturn”
The tricky state of Dubai’s real estate market will not get beter with Expo 2020, S&P Global Ratngs said, where residental property prices have fallen by over 25% since 2014. Dubai could atract 11 million foreign visitors to Expo 2020 world fair, according to the event’s organisers. This is expected to grow tourism and the retail sector, but not the property market. “We believe Expo 2020, just on the back of potental visitor flows to the emirate, will ease temporary pressures on hotels and retailers. However, it is unlikely to materially improve long-term conditons in the real estate sector,” S&P Global Ratngs credit analyst Sapna Jagtani said in a statement. Slowdown intensifies In its latest Middle East Chart book by Capital Economics, consultant William Jackson argues in similar vein, sugges ng early signs ae that the UAE’s economic slowdown has intensified in the second half of this year. “In year-onyear terms, which is what maters for GDP growth, oil output declined for the firsst me since mid-2018 in Oober. This contrac on in output loo s set to deepen in the coming months before fading out at the start of next year. “The non-oil sector has con nued o struggle. Imports – a proxy for domes c demand – are contrac ng t their fastest pace since the end of 2017. Private sector credit growth has remained weak. And the slump in Dubai’s real estate sector shows no signs of aba ng. “Next year’s World Expo should provide some boost to ac vit. But we are concerned that once the Expo leaves town, some government-related en es may struggle to service their large debts.”

McDonald's CEO Steve Easterbrook Lost His Job Over Relatonship With Employee
M
cDonald's Corp fired Chief Execu e Officer Steve Easterbrook because he had a consensual rela onship with an emplo ee, losing the strategist who revived sales with all-day breakfast and led the company's charge into delivery and online ordering. The burger chain's board voted Friday to terminate Easterbrook, 52, afer inves aa ng theelala onship, which violated company policy, according to a statement Sunday. McDonald's policy doesn't allow the CEO to have a rela onship with a yone in the company. Chris Kempczinski, who runs US opera ons, as promoted to president and CEO. “This was a mistake,” Easterbrook said of his actons in an email sent to employees Sunday. “Given the values of the company, I agree with the board that it is tme for me to move on.” Easterbrook was seen as relentless in his push to capture a new genera on of customers who would be willing to order
through smartphone apps, pay online, and choose to have food delivered to home or work instead of venturing into the outlets. To stress urgency, he ed execu es' compensaa ono the speed and breadth of the delivery rollout, and worked with vendors including UberEats. His strategies are paying off: Same-store sales, a key metric of success, recovered with the arrival of all-day breakfast, and he axed poorly selling items and added new ones while crea ng lo er priced value menus to draw in diners. McDonald's shares have almost doubled since he took over in March 2015, more than twice the gain in the S&P 500 Index. “You can make a very strong argument that Easterbrook was the best CEO in the restaurant industry,” said Michael Halen, who covers the sector for Bloomberg Intelligence. The stock closed at $193.94 a share on Nov. 1, giving it a market capitaliza on of $147.3 billion .With Easterbrook now out of the picture, it's le o Kempczinski to conn nue the push into delivery and electronic ordering. He
joined McDonald's in 2015 to oversee global strategy, business development and innova on. He mot recently served as president of the US business and, like Easterbrook, was deeply involved in the drive to expand online delivery. “Chris has been an important partner to me over the last four years and is the ideal person to take on the role of CEO,” Easterbrook said in his departure note. Joe Erlinger, who joined the company in 2002, will become president of the US business. In recent quarters, McDonald's has been one of the industry's best performers, with same-store sales rising 5.9% globally in the latest quarter, more than analysts had projected. The company has sought to renovate its image by remodelling its loca ons -- but franchisees have complained about the high costs associated with changes like building a wall to hide the kitchen opera ons behind the ash registers. In 2018, it slowed the pace of remodels, le ng op ators complete them by 2022 instead of the ini al oal of 2020.
