Glorious Years

I a ended the leading confex on the edible oil industry last month - Globoil. Organised by Tefla's, in its 22nd year, Globoil has become a much sought a er event in the Asian edible oil industry. The event has a parallel exhibi on running with some good amount of glamour added into it through fashion shows and awards ceremony. When it was iterated that it is women who are driving the purchase decisions of grocery and home, during the interes ng 'Changing Consumer Dynamics' session, Hemant Malik, CEO, ITC Foods said that grocery decisions and for that ma er any household decisions are now being influenced by the KIDS! They are now driving the decisions so therefore marke ng campaigns are now being centred around them. It was also revealed that in-store brands are giving a run of life challenge to the large MNC's and there may be several factors that are influencing this trend. Some of them may be be er packaging, be er visibility at the store, be er deals by the store and finally be er persuasion by the store!! It was also men oned that it is very important that the larger enterprises too, renounce the fear of failure & take greater risks. They too need to keep innova ng, as innova on is the new survival mantra. Held at Renaissance Hotel, Mumbai, where I also stayed, courtesy Tefla's, I learnt a lesson about the significance of prompt service in Hospitality industry. When I requested that someone be sent to my room with a basic u lity item, it took two reminders and twenty minutes for the assistance to arrive at my room. This certainly cost me my temperament and some valuable ra ng stars to the five star na onally acclaimed hotel! Exhibi on Showcase is releasing its 3rd annual Coffee Table Book that will showcase India's leading exhibi on organisers, service providers and event venues that won in EEA 2018. The Coffee Table Book will give a glimpse into the Indian exhibi on industry ecosystem. A special white paper has also been published about “How Effec ve Are Exhibi ons” in which we have surveyed over 430 exhibitors and over 450 visitors in different trade - shows of the country in a span of over two months. You can go through the en re survey results in the Coffee Table Book. The nomina ons for Exhibi on Excellence Awards 2019 will open soon. This year, there will be some big changes in the EEA and I can verily say that EEA 2019 will be a glorious extravaganza like never before. The Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, NSIC and PHDCCI have already extended their support towards EEA 2019. I would love to hear your comments on raghav@exhibi onshowcase.com. Happy Reading!

Guest Editor Column Challenges Faced By The Exhibition Industry

In India the exhibi on sector has been ignored and has not yet a ained the status of an industry and due to the lack of this status, the country does not look at the exhibi on sector to propel economic growth Cyril Pereira Managing Director, Reed Triune Exhibi ons Pvt. Ltd.

T

hese days we all live a good part of our lives online, but nothing compares to face to face mee ng. One of the ways through which businesses can meet their poten al customers face to face and connect with them is through exhibi ons and trade shows. Exhibi ons have a huge impact on domes c economy and it's GDP. The exhibi on market is driven by surging expansion in the developing economies. The market is gaining momentum with the increased government ini a ves to boost the domes c industries. B2C or B2B exhibi ons provide an opportunity to promote products and services to a wide group of customers, all in one venue. The exhibi on industry is undergoing a period of turbulent change, even though the Indian exhibi on market has seen a significant growth over the past 15 years, many challenges lie ahead and the industry is at crossroads. Globaliza on has changed the way businesses operate and opened the entrance for a digital era which will lead to customers regarding trade fairs as merely one medium among many in the B2B area in the future. Another major challenge faced by this industry is that more and more millennials (genera on between 1980 and 1996) are holding execu ve posi ons in the marke ng and sales departments of companies and since they are used to living in a digital world it becomes a great challenge to a ract them to be a part of the trade shows and exhibi ons. The research findings suggest that, in order to be a rac ve for millennials, exhibi ons should turn themselves into more emo onal experiences, something that visitors and exhibitors do not want to miss. Therefore, the success of exhibi ons will also be influenced by their 'digital strategy' and their ability to integrate digital communica on.

” One of the main challenges for this industry in developing countries is the lack of venues and infrastructure. Limited venue capacity for holding exhibi ons can be a hindrance. In order for this industry to have con nuous growth it is necessary that the venues are constantly upgraded so that exhibitors can be provided with latest technology and facili es. The escala ng cost for venues is another challenge faced by them. Many of the developing countries lack good transport infrastructure and hence if visitors can't get to the venue, it's not going to be a successful exhibi on. A suitable exhibi on venue determines the convenience of transporta on and logis cs, as logis c inefficiency may affect the opera ons of the exhibi on centre. Exhibitors in developing countries also face the problem of economic, poli cal and social stability. If the economy is not stable, exhibitors from other countries would not want to par cipate in the exhibi ons and hence it becomes a hindrance for the industry. Another challenge is the long planning lead me for the exhibi on organizers which means that there will be uncertain es in the economy and hence the demand forecas ng result will be inaccurate. Further, demand for space at exhibi on venues fluctuates from period to period. Facili es planning and space and space management are main concerns. Exhibi on organizers try to pack in as many booths as possible into a limited floor space. The layout process of the booths cannot be easily automated. These are just some of the opera onal challenges that cannot be readily addressed using conven onal opera onal management. The exhibi on market is largely driven by an increase in the need for specialized, effec ve and high quality exhibi on events,

Guest Editor Column which a ract interna onal buyers. Opera onal risks such as conflicts between exhibitors and organizers, unexpected costs and government regula ons and poli cal and social cultural scenario in the hos ng country can pose a major challenge to the exhibi on industry. These factors could affect the organizers ability to execute opera ons and may jeopardize the organiza on of the exhibi on. India has been a difficult place to do business for many exhibi ons organizers. Un l last year, it was ranked 130th in the world for ease of doing business, by the World Bank. The country has been a difficult place for successful foreign direct investment (FDI) and poor government recogni on of industry and a shortage of world-class venues. Ra onaliza on of GST and easing of permission processes is another problem faced by the exhibi on industry. Generally, 80 per cent of businesses par cipa ng in trade and other exhibi ons in India are MSMEs, for whom 18 per cent GST is high.

In order for the exhibi on industry to grow in India the government should reduce the rate of GST so the small and medium scale industries find it easier to par cipate and use these exhibi ons to their advantage.

In India the exhibi on sector has been ignored and has not yet a ained the status of an industry and due to the lack of this status, the country does not look at the exhibi on sector to propel economic growth. Yogesh Mudras, MD, UBM India Pvt. Ltd. had said, “With an industry status, our economy would grow even faster. It would help us in ge ng the much-needed tax benefit for long term sustainability, compe ve venue rates and the development of good quality venues under the PPP model, structured finance and tax compulsions.” As a result of the many challenges faced by the exhibi on industry, its true poten al has not been realized and hence the sector is unable to contribute as much as it possibly can.

NGT Ques ons ITPO Over The Environment Impact Assessment Report

T

he Na onal Green Tribunal has ques oned the India Trade Promo on Organisa on over the grant of Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) for redevelopment of the Praga Maidan complex as a world-class conven on centre and asked it to show in 3 weeks whether the EIA report was based on a detailed study. A bench of NGT Chairperson Jus ce Adarsh Kumar Goel said it seemed that apparently no impact assessment study was undertaken on the impact of crea on of tunnels and underground parking on the groundwater in the area. The tribunal also asked the project proponent to file replies on the requirement of Cumula ve Assessment Study, Ecological Impact Study, incremental load rela ng to air pollu on standards and the "grossly deficient" Traffic Impact Assessment Study. Senior advocate Sanjay Jain, appearing for the ITPO, submi ed before the bench a detailed plan of the project to show that it has been conceived taking into considera on all relevant factors, including traffic management and parking. He said the project plan envisaged re-rou ng of traffic for

deconges on of the area, supplemented by construc on of several underground tunnels and mul -storied basement parking. The redevelopment plan is to develop a total of 3,26,065 sqm of builtup area, including 1,19,445 sqm of exhibi on space, a conven on centre with sea ng capacity of 7,000 people with a number of different-sized mee ng rooms, space for public circula on in phase-I.

Upon considera on of the submissions, we had expressed to Mr. Jain our concern on the crea on of the tunnels and crea on of underground parking which is stated to be of the capacity of accommoda ng for more than 4000 vehicles which would have deleterious effect on the groundwater in the seriously groundwater starved city of Delhi. Apparently, no impact assessment study had been undertaken on this aspect.

Mr. Jain fairly conceded that he would not be able to answer the ques ons off hand and require to seek instruc ons. However, it was submi ed that the EIA report considered by the Environment Assessment Commi ee was based upon a detailed study a copy of which has not

been placed on record and prayed for a period of three weeks. In view of this and in the interest of jus ce, we allow the ITPO the me sought for. The documents be filed within three weeks," the bench said. The green panel also directed the ITPO to clarify its stand on the submission of Delhi Pollu on Control Commi ee that the consent to establish for the project was s ll under considera on of the Commi ee. The ma er was listed for next hearing on October 3. The NGT was hearing a plea filed by environment ac vist Verhaen Khanna and others seeking inquiry against officers of the ministry and others who had failed in discharging their statutory du es by gran ng the EC. The plea filed in the tribunal has sought quashing of the environmental clearance (EC) granted to the ITPO for re-development of Praga Maidan complex into a world-class conven on centre. "The EC was obtained by concealing material informa on and the appraisal of the project has been conducted in complete viola on of the provisions of the Environment Impact Assessment No fica on, 2006," the plea, filed through advocate Meera Gopal, had alleged.

News Buzz Exhibi on Showcase talks to Aditya Gupta about the journey of DIDAC and its impact on the industry. Excerpts; ES: Please tell us about DIDAC & its journey. Aditya: DIDAC basically comes from the word DIDACTICS, which means anything to do with teaching and learning. We talk about the art and science of teaching and learning and DIDAC as an associa on represents India and the global space, where a conglomerate of more than 20 countries around the world bring together the best prac ces which have been happening across the globe, whether it is about primary educa on, higher educa on or technical educa on. It brings hardware, so ware, content, curriculum, teacher training from all over the world into one common pla orm. The Idea is 'Let's make teaching and learning be er and effec ve'. We all need to learn from each other. No country, no school, no college, no city, no policy maker can actually do everything about educa on by themselves. There are best prac ces, there is learning from each other and events like DIDAC bring all of that at one common pla orm. ES: What prompted you to organise a show on the educa on industry? How has the DIDAC exhibi on evolved over the me to reach this level of success? Aditya: If you look at the journey of private educa on in the last 15 years, we realise that a lot of things are happening around educa on in a very fragmented way. It was not structured and we felt that we must bring everything around educa on under one common roof. The DIDAC journey has been very interes ng! This was our 10th edi on; from the first year we've been trying to bring companies and educators together. However, bringing 500 educators under one roof was difficult. Today, a er 10 years more than 12000 educators have actually visited the event from more than 29 states in India and from around

20 countries. MHRD bodies like NCERT, NIOS, and AICTE, all of them are using the pla orm to exhibit. So the public sector and the private sector organisa ons are coming together, exhibi ng what is required in educa on. For example, somebody from Delhi government showcased Happiness curriculum. Gujarat government showcased the higher educa on curriculum.

was all manual form filling, big lines and big queues and now we have digital registra on. There was no social media 20 years back, so you had to reach out by adver sing, word of mouth, and mee ngs. Today, digital world is making the world come closer. And it's only about how you make things be er, it's only about how you use technology which can make the big difference. ES: What makes the DIDAC exhibi on so popular in the Educa on Industry? Aditya: Well what makes DIDAC exhibi on popular is that we are the only event in the country which brings together the en re global educa on and training products and solu ons. Also, we are the largest event in Asia Pacific for this industry. Exclusive Interview

Exhibi on Showcase Talks To Michael Duck About His Perspec ve On The Informa UBM Combina on And The Indian Exhibi on Industry ES: When did you join UBM and what are your roles and responsibili es as UBM Asia's Execu ve Vice President? Michael: I joined what was then United Newspapers Ltd. and known in Asia, based in Hong Kong as the Hong Kong Trade Fair Group in 1994. It feels like yesterday! As EVP Asia I support the CEO of UBM Asia Margaret Ma Connolly in her work. We have many companies in Asia and a special responsibility towards India, which I have been involved in since its incep on in 2006 along with some of the large Hong Kong Fairs and our largest joint venture in China. Along with this I work in the Mari me sector across Asia. I also hold responsibility as a Director and Treasurer of UFI – The Global Exhibi on Industry Associa on and I am the Informa representa ve. Also I am the Director of HKECIA and a former chairman of Hong Kong Exhibi on Industry Associa on. I serve on the board of the Asia Commi ee of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce as well. ES: What are your comments on the Informa-UBM Combina on? Both Informa and UBM are big organisa ons, what do you think will be the implica on of this Combina on in the Asian Exhibi on Industry? Michael: This combina on is a very exci ng one; it brings together two organisa ons that don't really have any 'clashing' por olios. We compliment each other in many industry ver cals and geographies. For Asia, UBM was a very strong part of UBM plc, and Informa in Asia was a smaller part so the combina on is that much easier and brings together teams that will take the next stages of industry growth to increased heights. ES: Informa has announced Management changes at UBM Asia. Your role as Group Chief Representa ve in China has been extended to all Informa businesses in China. Can you elaborate on your new responsibili es? Michael: All large organisa ons now recognise the importance of China as a full market and, also that representa on in Beijing is very important in having smooth rela ons with the Ministries. I was appointed some me ago to do this for UBM and now it's widened out with the Informa por olio that encompasses, for instance a huge business in Scien fic and Academic publishing.

Exclusive Interview

ES: How much me would it take for this collabora on to take a complete shape in Asia? Michael: Probably an year in all, maybe even sooner. ES: There is a Brand Transi on Programme underway, led by UBM Asia's President and CEO JimĂŠ Essink to re re UBM and create a single en ty and brand by 2019. Can you please elaborate on that? Michael: There are obviously two large brands here namely Informa and UBM. The decision is to re re the UBM brand some me next year and this will be done in an orderly way. ES: In 2017, there was a growth of Asian exhibi ons in terms of net space sold. There was an average increase of 7%, reaching 22million sqm.. We are more than halfway through 2018, what direc on do you think the exhibi on industry is heading to & what are the opportuni es that lay ahead? Michael: In 2018 the growth in the exhibi on industry in Asia con nues to surge. In any por olio some shows are up and a few are down dependant on the industry. India's growth is tremendous! ES: India has just taken over China and become the fastest growing country in the world, what is your perspec ve about India and the Indian Exhibi on Industry?

Michael: India for sure is growing; however the infrastructure it needs is needed today! The two new venues in Delhi will bring good growth, and so will the new venue in Mumbai, but all of these are needed today. They will be welcome, however it's important for venue managers to recognise Interna onal prac ces in growing shows and organisers and stand contractors to modernise the industry. ES: Can you share some insights with us about the event venues in Asia? Michael: In Japan there will be a much needed extension in Big Sight in 2021, in Shenzhen a new 500000 sqm. venue will be partly ready in2020, we're also looking at some extensions in Hong Kong in 2020. Right now, India urgently needs a very large venue in Mumbai! ES: What are your comments on the upcoming UFI Global Congress in St. Petersburg? Michael: Poli cs is always challenging and plans are made a long way in advance. I personally know the head of the Russian Exhibi on Industry Associa on and he will ensure that the St. Petersburg congress will be excellent! If you have not been there then it's a 'must', it is one of the world's most magniďŹ cent ci es. Though do take a warm coat..

Exclusive Interview

Exhibi on Showcase Talks To Kai Ha endorf, Managing Director And CEO, UFI ES: "According to The Global Barometer report of July, for the first me in ten years, all four global regions reported a posi ve turnover development at the same me. Can you elaborate on this, and what do you think is the way forward? Kai: The global exhibi on industry is currently running on all cylinders. The significant growth an cipated for the industry six months ago is now in full swing, throughout all regions in the world. However, at the same me, geopoli cal uncertainty and certain industry shi s have led to more cau ous expecta ons in terms of profits. The outlook for 2018 is currently less op mis c globally, with a smaller share of companies expec ng a profit increase. We are also no cing that all kinds of companies around the world are embracing digi sa on within the industry. ES: For the first half of 2019, the barometer reports the highest ever share of posi ve expecta ons for Europe. Can you give us some insights about the European Exhibi on Industry? Kai: Europe's exhibi on markets are mature and benefit from many ongoing investments into infrastructure. Right now, there

are lots of projects underway across the con nent that will expand and/or upgrade exhibi on venue structures. Alongside the huge na onal markets in the US and China, Europe has established itself as the home for many world-leading interna onal exhibi ons, driven by skilled and well-educated organiser teams. ES: The report results also indicate that the top business issue for the industry remains the “state of the na onal /regional economy” (listed by 24% of all respondents), ahead of “Compe on within the industry”, “Global economic developments” and “Internal challenges” (where “Human resources” are named as the most important aspect). Can UFI play a part towards sor ng out the “Compe on within the industry” and “Internal challenges” issues? Kai: The close rela onship between the state of our industry and the economic situa on – in both single markets and on a global scale – is one of the founda ons of the exhibi on world. “Exhibi ons mirror the markets they serve” At UFI, everything we do is geared towards suppor ng our members with successful business development. UFI research, such as the Barometer, delivers industry trends to allow each and every company to compare their own situa on with global and regional benchmarks. Ÿ We also gather and share many industry best prac ce cases to showcase new developments and innova ve solu ons in areas as varied as HR management, digital innova on, marke ng, sustainable development, and opera ons and services. Many of our members tell us they find great ideas for their internal issues by analysing these resources. Ÿ UFI's educa onal programmes such as the UFI-EMD, the Venue Management School, and the Interna onal Summer University, provide excellent opportuni es to train and educate teams on all these issues. Ÿ And, last but not least, we are a face-to-face industry, so we spend a lot of me and effort on our global programme of industry events – from the Global Congress and the CEO Summit, to annual conferences in Europe, La n America, the Middle East and Asia-Pacific. Make a note in your diary for 14-15 March when we will hold the next Asia-Pacific Conference in Tokyo, Japan. Ÿ

“In the past five years, the Indian market has grown by 39%, which is far ahead of the regional five-year average of 27.3%.

Exclusive Interview ES: Corporates are becoming more aware about the significance of exhibi ons. Do we have any insights about the average percentage of marke ng budget alloca on on exhibi ons (Globally, Region wise)? Kai: There are no global sta s cs available for this, but a few indicators exist. In general, small and medium enterprises tend to invest the lion's share of their marke ng budget into exhibi ons and face-to-face marke ng. Data from Germany's AUMA suggests that German exhibitors allocate around 40% of their marke ng budget to exhibi ons and face-to-face marke ng. Another recent study shows that the shi towards digital in marke ng spend has not harmed exhibi ons – quite the opposite in fact. As spending on print media and TV media is declining, spending on events is rising. At mes, we even see money moving from digital to events. Exhibi ons are no longer just about spending money on a booth to impress your clients, they are also about how to address your clients emo onally and what kind of values your company holds. In many cases, exhibi ons are also integrated into year-round campaigns that cover digital outreach and physical mee ngs, building rela onships with customers both online and on-site.

growth rates for two to three years. In 2018, the trade fair industry is expected to grow at least as strongly as the broader economy – 7% to 8%. ES: What is your opinion on the ongoing “fes valisa on trend” (part celebra on, part conference and part trade show)? Kai: For a while now, we have seen exhibi on and conference business models converging – with ConfEx formats becoming ever more popular. We see that many of the fastest growing business events are driven by communi es who want to meet in an environment that's part fes val, part coanference and part tradeshow – otherwise known as the fes valisa on trend. Here, the quality of the visitors a ending makes it highly a rac ve for companies to invest in a presence, but the focus of organisers lies first and foremost with visitors – and not exhibitors, as is the case with the tradi onal exhibi on model. These developments bring challenges to organisers and venues alike, and there are valuable insights to be gained by looking at other sectors of business events.

ES: UFI and SACEOS are developing a joint 'Asia Pacific Execu ve Development Programme'. Can you tell us about the programme? Kai: We've had some great conversa ons with SACEOS about this, and are working with them on a new blend of educa onal offerings over the coming months. As the educa onal needs of organisers and venue opera ons are different everywhere in the world, we do not believe in a one-programme-fits-all approach. Our EMD programme, for instance, provides the framework for many issues, but doesn't go into the specifics as they are different everywhere. So we intend to combine this with bitesized, tailor-made programmes, depending on requirements. Stay tuned – we plan to announce more about this at the upcoming UFI Asia Pacific Congress 2019 in Japan.

ES: There was also a discussion on Digital Disrup on by the UFI Digital Innova on Commi ee at the UFI European Conference. Can you tell us about the solu ons discussed towards a customer centric management through digitaliza on? Kai: Digital Disrup on is a subject that's been broadly discussed at all our events. UFI's Digital Innova on Commi ee gives a comprehensive insight into what Digital Innova on or Digital Disrup on actually is, and why it's important to any business inside or outside the exhibi on industry. Throughout the European Conference in Verona, we've had many sessions on this topic conducted by knowledgeable experts from different regions. In one such session, for example, Eddie Choi discusses disrup on in the business world and how it can be easily explained, thema cally, using organisa onal structure. You can read all kinds of opinions and insights on this topic on UFI's blog: blog.ufi.org

ES: India has just taken over China and become the fastest growing country in the world, what is your perspec ve about India and the Indian Exhibi on Industry? Kai: While China is s ll the largest exhibi on market in the AsiaPacific region by far, India is catching up, as is shown by the latest UFI/BSG report, published a few weeks back. “It states that India's trade fair industry has been the best performing large market for the past five years. Net space sold increased from 1,065,000 sqm in 2016 to 1,187,000 sqm in 2017, which is an increase of 11.4%. In the past five years, the Indian market has grown by 39%, which is far ahead of the regional five-year average of 27.3%.” India's outlook is equally posi ve. Real progress has been made towards adding significant venue capacity in Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore. This will serve to unlock a lot of pent-up demand – especially in the major exhibi on ci es of Mumbai and Delhi. If the proposed upgrades and expansions at Praga Maidan and Bombay Exhibi on Centre go ahead, India will be well posi oned to record double-digit

ES: The theme of 85th UFI Global Congress is The Dynamics of Transi on – Our Industry's Complex Future. The exhibi on industry is currently facing up to many issues: from consolida on to digi sa on, from investments to restructurings, from fast track hiring to long term reten on. Can you elaborate on what can we expect from the event and what will be the takeaways for the delegates? Kai: The Global Congress is our industry's largest global mee ng of the year. It's the ideal opportunity for members to learn about topics of strategic interest, as well as gain insight into industry trends and the challenges the exhibi on industry is currently facing. We are expec ng hundreds of delegates from around 50 different countries, and look forward to welcoming a sizeable delega on from India as well. Sessions will focus on the various dimensions of transforma on and changes we are experiencing – from private equity investments to venue developments, from new digital opportuni es to the changing show floor. Every par cipant will leave the Congress with new contacts and ideas.

Exclusive Interview

“India Has Emerged On The Global Scene. World Class Venues Are Under Construc on, World-Class Events Are Wai ng To Be Held In India,” Ravinder Sethi, VP, IEIA ES: India is heading for elec ons next year. What is your take on this governments' policies towards the exhibi ons industry? Ravinder: Interes ng and mely ques on. IICC was inaugurated a few days ago by PM, Narendra Modi, and in his inaugural speech he said that, “Exhibi ons are the need of the hour". I think exhibi ons are now being recognised by the government, and this will con nue. Due to elec on, I don't see any changes in policies but I do foresee growth. Dwarka was started by Kamalnath Ji from the previous government and BJP government picked it up. So momentum is in the industry & I'm sure that the next government will take it forward. ES: Do you think the exhibi on industry is impacted by the poli cal environment of a country? Ravinder: No, it's not. The industry is impacted by the economic environment. UFI came out with a study according to which in the past year, Indian Exhibi on Industry has shown the fastest growth in Asia. Our industry grew 1112%, while our economic growth was around 8%. This has happened for the first me that the exhibi on industry has grown even more than the economy has. ES: With India overtaking China as the fastest growing na on of the world, along with the ongoing US and China trade war. Do you think India can pick up synergies and progress? Ravinder: I think we've compared ourselves with China for long. And we would've overtaken China in terms of growth in any case. If you compare the exhibi on industry sta s cs of the past five years from India and China, you'll no ce that while China has been more or less stagnant, India has shown growth. ES: How far has India evolved in terms of Ease of Doing Business? Ravinder: Recently, I was in Taiwan for the TITRA MICE Forum and I spoke about the 3 game changers for the Indian MICE Industry. One, venue developments, two, introduc on of standard taxa on i.e. GST and third, Ease of Doing Business. FDI today is on an increase...IKEA has opened, infrastructure is expanding and Defence industry is showing developments. And the reason behind this is ease of doing business. There are s ll obstacles present, but not as many. And this reflects on the exhibi on industry. ES: Recently at ICPB's CIC Conclave Suman Billa said that India is doing great when it comes to Tourism and that it touched the 10 million mark in 2017. And Mission 20 million by 2020 has been set. According to you, how can India a ract more tourists? Ravinder: A strong ini a ve is being taken by IEIA, Ministry of Commerce, Invest India and many other bodies i.e MEET IN INDIA. It is on the ini al stages now, but we have the tools to promote it. IICC in Dwarka will hold 10000 people, Praga Maidan in Delhi can accommodate 7000 and Reliance in Mumbai can hold 3000-4000 people. We have the venues and now we can move towards increasing the number of business mee ngs, through which MICE Tourism will definitely increase.

Exclusive Interview ES: A lot of factors affect Tourism in a country like Airport, Logis cs and Infrastructure. Do you feel these dots are connected in India, for our development in the sector? Ravinder: As an Indian I feel proud of the infrastructure that we have. Delhi airport is winning all these awards, there are expansions plans being implemented in Mumbai. I think the only drawback that we s ll have, are the Railway services in India. Our railway services are not on par with Japan or Europe in terms of basic facili es like food and washrooms. ES: Do you think we stand by the standards of A thi Devo Bhava? Do you think our hospitality industry is be er when compared to other countries? Ravinder: Hospitality is in our culture. I even said this in Taiwan; we have hospitality in our genes. And if you join it with organised and great infrastructure like hotels and restaurants, the people are bound to visit. I give credit ICPB and Ministry of Tourism for this; they have carried everything in such a structural form that our hotel industry is world class. ES: What can India do to a ract Global Congresses and Global events? Ravinder: The thing is, we don't have venues for global events yet. For Global Congresses, venues are planned 2-3 years in advance. And I've had mee ngs with people from Conven on centres and with LC Goyal, CMD at ITPO, and the inquiries have already started coming in; so tenta ve bookings have been made. 10 years from now I don't see a lack of venues being an issue for the Indian Exhibi on Industry. ES: A large conference or congress involves exhibi ons as well. So should we also be focussing on that? Ravinder: They will come automa cally. FIATA congress is happening tomorrow in Delhi with around 2000-3000 delegates, there is an exhibi on a ached to it. R.E. Rogers has handled logis cs for many conferences and congresses, and more o en than not, there is an exhibi on organised simultaneously. And venue providers are aware of it. If you look at Praga Maidan, they are building a state of the art conven on Centre and exhibi on venue.

Ravinder: Why not? It's a free market. In the me of Fiat when Maru came to business, everyone thought that it would just take over the whole market. I know there are some people who think that these mergers and acquisi ons are not good for the Indian industry. But they are giving employment to people & bringing in new products amongst many other benefits. I believe in a free market and the poten al that it has. ES: Personally, how has the year 2018 been for R.E. Rogers? What were your major projects, and what are your upcoming plans? Ravinder: It has been a good year, there was vibrancy. Our vision is always to be number one. And I say it with humility, that we have maintained that posi on. This year, we expanded in terms of business overseas. We are also heavily involved in defence, and in the free trade zone. We've made ver cal expansions and not at the cost of our core business. Most recently, we have handled the Bryan Adams Tour in 5 ci es across India. ES: You've worn many hats since you joined the industry & taken up many roles. How do you manage to find me for your work? Ravinder: I act as an open, free, transparent consultant to anyone who comes to me. I am there for anybody who needs some advice. As far as R.E. Rogers is concerned, we have a highly professional team running the business. We have highly experienced people working for us. The team members are great leaders and know the importance of delega on. Sudhir Dhawan, Manoj Kumar, they all great at what they do. We have a team of about 120-125 employees, and in order to ensure that no one is overworked, we make it a point that people have to go on holidays. The company pays. We give flexibility wherever possible. We are the Rogers family. And when you use the word family, you have to mean it. We have one of the lowest a ri on rates in the industry!

ES: What kind of support do you expect the government of India to extend to the exhibi on industry? Ravinder: In terms of infrastructure, I think government of India has shown great support. IICC and Re-development of Praga Maidan are perfect examples of that. But most importantly, the government has now started listening. The IEIA has been in dialogue with Services Export Promo on Council under the ministry of Commerce and Industry at the highest level. ES: There are many collabora ons, mergers and acquisi ons happening in the exhibi on industry. What is your take on this? Is it a healthy sign for the exhibi ons Industry?

Established in 1995, our vision was to conceptualize experien al marke ng ideas that would bring brands alive. Over the years we have evolved from experien al marke ng to interac ve marke ng with built and proven experience across consul ng, research, design, planning, produc on and flawless execu on. We pride ourselves for being one of the very few companies in this area who believe in understanding the business objec ves and design experiences to that goal and not in isola on as an 'event'. I would say that over the years, we have grown from bringing brands alive to Living the brand. ES: How do you ensure that you do jus ce to your client while crea ng a brand statement? Sanjeev: At CSD we aim to work with clients who are looking for partners and consultants in bringing their brands closer to their customers. If a brand needs an agency, they will have mul ple choices but if needs a partner, we will definitely be in the considera on set. Most of our clients both exis ng and poten al increasingly need partners who have an understanding of the business, are able to create customized crea ve solu ons instead of one size fits all, integrate with all pieces of the communica on including adver sing etc to ensure

ES: What all factors you keep in your mind in a brand ac va on project, what is the breakdown of importance that you give to designing, experiences and ac vi es and other components involved ? Sanjeev: A brand ac va on is about designing a sensory experience that brings a person into a las ng and meaningful rela onship with a brand. There is no ready formula for the breakdown but we always create immersive experiences that blend analog, digital, and hybrid environments to connect people in meaningful ways. Design and ac vity are the sub set of Experience crea on ES: At the Chennai IESA Expo Shop, you talked about exhibi ons and events crea ng synergies. Can you elaborate on that? Are there any changes that you have ini ated in your team's way of working to bring dynamism? Sanjeev: At IESA , I talked about my strong convic on in the fact that Future of Exhibi on lies in experiences . It's no longer enough to simply tell people what you offer, you need to show them, surround them with, and engage them with your brand. That's why blend of exhibi ons and events are more important

Any project we do, the outcome expected is reach and to ensure that we design our campaigns to be a balance between the physical and digital worlds. Most projects not just a single one are balanced like this, for instance any project we execute at the Auto Expo needs digital media to enhance conversa ons about the brands we work with. Exclusive Interview ES: What kind of challenges do you encounter during your work? Sanjeev: Our biggest challenge star ng out was to change the way event agencies were viewed. Event agencies were the last mile and only meant for execu on. We strived to prove our experience and exper se in that area before changing the conversa on from tac cal to strategic. We some mes asked tough ques ons to our clients on how the events fit in to their overall brand marke ng strategy. It was a risk because we could have lost accounts but our clients appreciated our approach and we were involved in campaign design from the ini al stages itself. Our mo o is to embrace challenges and find a solu on which enhances the core thought process behind bringing brands alive . ES: Can you recollect a crisis situa on at an event and how your team handled it? Sanjeev: Not all crises are created equal. From an accident that disrupts a supply chain to a social media firestorm, companies manage minor crises all the me. It's part of doing business. A single mega event—or a combina on of them—can trigger crises that threaten the very survival of the business by resul ng in systemic weaknesses that undermine trust and reputa on. These kinds of crises lay bare the readiness and responsiveness of an organiza on. They test a company's values, leadership and character and at a me when there is no room for error. At CSD we have a crisis framework that addresses the needs of all stakeholders: leadership, employees, customers and suppliers. The plan defines accountability, roles and responsibili es, processes, governance and communica ons. ES: Recently, there was a mezzanine stall fall at IIJS. A month before that, a tent collapsed at the Midnapore Kisan Rally. Clearly the number of accidents taking place during events and exhibi ons is on a rise. EEMA members pledged for safety at Event Show Asia Safety Mumbai in August. Can you share with us your thoughts on safety during events? Sanjeev: Every single EEMA member is well informed on the dangers lurking within every event and the precau ons that must be taken. Recently, en re event fraternity from EEMA came together and pledged to think safe, act safe and be safe. They pledged 'Safety First Fir This year EEMA also plans to set up a task force of na onal & regional experts, who can advise on be er safety standards, with cri cal inputs from a panel of interna onal advisors as well. At EEMA we propose to conduct sessions to educate and create awareness among clients about health and safety standards and spend a li le extra on the key measures to create a successful event . We will Make it important for EEMA agencies to ensure safety norms and standards, especially the associate partners and vendors who are providing services to the event companies . EEMA is in the process of crea ng health and safety compliant companies to give a direc on to the industry and make it mandatory for EEMA companies to follow it.

ES: Organizers of live events, film fes vals and exhibi ons will soon have a dedicated online portal for all the permissions in the state of Maharashtra. Can you tell us about that ? Sanjeev: Principal Secretary, Tourism Maharashtra had revealed that the organizers of LIVE Events, film fes vals, and exhibi ons will soon have a dedicated on-line portal for all the permissions in the state of Maharashtra. However how it will pan across other Indian states s ll needs to be seen. ES: How different would you say is India's Events industry from that of other na ons? Sanjeev: Events are largely the same everywhere. But there are differences in terms of the skills we have available here and technology. While India is catching up rapidly, I feel that we need to first try and establish a policy framework that promotes events, more venues where technologies and large-scale events can happen, integrated facili es that are truly state of the art, single window clearances in terms of permissions etc, all that will be a boon to our industry. ES: How big is the Indian Event Industry? Sanjeev: The Events and Ac va ons industry has grown at 16% in FY2016-17 and is expected cross INR 10,000 crore by FY202021 according to EY – EEMA (Event and Entertainment Management Associa on) report tled '#Experience Next'. Government spending is expected to grow at 14% and sports is expected to grow at 18% over the next 5 years.
