The world is witnessing an economic slowdown and India too is facing the music. Companies are facing credit crunch & are adopting to cost cutting measures. Revenues are dwindling and the bottom line across businesses is taking big blows due to adverse environmental situations. Corporates across all sectors likewise, are looking for innovative ways to promote their business. In this hour of decline, the companies, big & small alike, are understanding the limitations of traditional advertising practices. They are now looking to spread their marketing budgets across a 360 degree media spectrum. Just focusing on one media platform is passé. Print, Television & Radio are highly priced and heaps of advertisements across these mediums have only gone to create a distorted, cluttered image in the minds of consumers. Therefore, to carve out a desired brand image in the minds of consumers is getting increasingly difficult. It is here that exhibitions are pitching in. In these difficult times, the exhibitions are stealing the show. They are getting significant not just from marketing point of view, but also because they help build up sales volumes. They help in reaching out to new markets and build reputation in the existing ones. New exhibitions are coming up and even non-traditional industries are understanding the importance of exhibitions. But as the proverb goes,” if you choose to play, then play well”, similarly, one thing that can help you gain desired results from exhibitions is – Exhibit Smart! In this issue we bring together a collage of issues relating to the exhibition industry. It’s an interesting mix of articles that will keep our readers absorbed all through. The special focus this month focuses on how exhibitions can help you revive your business. Need of emergency services during shows is high indeed, & its important that the organizers do not consider such services as an extra burden on their pockets. Our readers will get knowledge about the major event venues in India. Hyderabad, as an inbound MICE destination is captured. We have poured light on the significance of portable services and as usual the reviews of exhibitions held last month are also included. Happy Reading! TarangKhosla

Greater Cochin Development Authority exhibition Centre goes above ground he Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) has finally dropped its preposterous plan to construct an underground exhibition centre at Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium. Instead, the agency will now build one above the ground for an estimated cost of Rs 90 crore. The authority which held discussions with officials of the Kerala Industrial and Technical Consultancy Organisation (Kitco) decided to have a 1.30 lakh-sqft permanent structure for the exhibition centre with a 1.05 lakh-sqft underground parking facility. The auditorium has been planned in 8,000 sqft area. The underground parking area will be able to accommodate about 350 cars. Though the authority said that it preferred an ellipsoid design, it would also consider a shell-like design. The design was finalized on August 26. A four-lane road 15-metre wide will run around the exhibition centre. Pedestrian pathways will be provided on either side. Each walkway will be two-and-a-half-metre wide. GCDA said that they expected to complete the construction of the project in 18 months after work begins. The GCDA had dropped its plan to construct an underground exhibition centre after experts from IIT New Delhi suggested it would entail expensive and deep piling work. For the underground structure, piles will have to be anchored to rocks to prevent the structure from collapsing. This would result in an estimated cost escalation of over Rs 160 crore.
T
GCDA chairman N Venugopal said that Kitco presented five designs. "We have chosen two designs and asked Kitco to give us the complete structural design, including that of interiors." EXHIBITION SHOWCASE | OCTOBER 2013 13

Portable Facilities – a must entity in Exhibitions and Events
WHAT’S IN
he portable toilet industry began in the 1940's in the ship building yards of USA. A wood cabana was developed with a small holding tank which became the first portable toilet. This unique concept soon spread to the construction industry and to organizers of large crowd events. In the early 1970's, portable toilets made of fiberglass were introduced. However, problems persisted. These toilets required more maintenance due to the brittle nature of the material. In addition, fiberglass absorbed odors in the cabana and holding tank, thus proving, to be a poor choice of material. In the mid-1970's, polyethylene portable toilets were introduced. Polyethylene made toilets lightweight and more durable. Polyethylene is easier to clean, since it is a non-porous and non-absorbing material. It is the most popular material for portable toilets today. The success of the clean and portable toilet is almost unparalleled. The advantage of being self-contained, having no moving parts, requiring no power source and the use of attractive non-porous plastic with smooth surfaces, has made the portable toilet superior to many permanent facilities.Whether you are holding a big party at home or you have invited hundreds of friends to an outdoor event, Portable facilities are needed everywhere. Mr. Naresh Wadhwa (CEO), ONSITE RENTALS SERVICES PRIVATE LIMITED is one of the initiators of bringing Portable Toilet systems in India. Portable toilet system is an accepted concept and a mandatory item in the developed countries all over the world for holding any outdoor event or for construction sites. The new advancement that adds to it is Shower facility given in these Portable Systems having the shape of Mercedes Trucks which will be launched soon. Q. Please Share your Growth story of the past 2 years Ans. I have displayed my products at major events like Formula 1, President House, Film Fare Awards, Auto Expo and many more major events. Q. What challenges did you face to establish this organization? Ans. It was a complete hard-work and dedication that has made me launch this concept of Portable Systems. In 2007, I manufactured the item from Abroad. It took 1 year to execute and bring such concept in India. I had myself travelled abroad numerous times to check the product reliability. The biggest challenge was to keep faith and guts to launch such an item which was new to the people and not well known. Q. Where do you see these Portable items in the next 10 years? Ans. The future is great as people are accepting the product. The only thing is that the portable systems should be made mandatory in order to give a world class facility to the industry with more hygienic systems.

COVER STORY
INTRODUCTION:
Exhibitions provide excellent interactive marketing platforms and when combined with Internet or email marketing offer a 360 degree communications channel to reach your new and existing customers.
34 EXHIBITION SHOWCASE | OCTOBER 2013
The Indian economy is nominally worth US$1.843 trillion; it is the tenth largest economy by market exchange rates, and is, at US$4.469 trillion, the thirdlargest by purchasing power parity, or PPP. With its average annual GDP growth rate of just above 5% over the past two decades, and reaching 10.4% during 2010, India is one of the world's fastest-growing economies. However, the country ranks 138th in the world in nominal GDP per capita and 129th in GDP per capita at PPP.
COVER STORY INDUSTRY: The pace of India’s economic growth has dropped significantly in the last three years. The dwindling rupee, rising Inflation ,global recession, together with the deep rooted internal corruption are causing great harm to the Indian business environment. India has to think over the crisis of economy soon; else all the sectors will face a disaster. Local businesses are facing credit crunch, start-ups are being shut down, costs are rising & business promotion is getting expensive by the day. In this hour of downturn, Exhibitions are the source of business promotion which every industry is coming to. Exhibition is the place where the industry interacts and moves a way ahead in making sales and getting recognition in the market. It is a great, cost effective medium to reach out to new markets.
Modes of Advertising: In terms of overall advertising expenditures, media advertising is still dominated by Press and television, which are of comparable size (by value of 'sales'). Posters and radio follow some way behind, with cinema representing a very specialist medium. But is there something more that adds to the value of sales directly?? The answer is yes. It’s Exhibitions.
Press, Television, Radio, Internet/Web Advertising and Mobile Advertising are the common ways of Advertising. But there is another effective way of increasing your sales and recalling Brand identity. Its called “Exhibitions” By the end of 2013, available venue capacity in Asia will reach 6,617,755 m2. The number of venues operating in Asia this year will be 191 across 15 different markets. Of those, more than 100 are in China – which now accounts for 69% of total capacity in the region.
These are normally the most expensive mediums, and as such are generally only open to the major advertisers, although some regional contractors offer more affordable packages to their local advertisers. Advertising has increased greatly in recent years, with the granting of many more licenses. This has only increased the clutter in the minds of the audiences. Its getting increasingly difficult to create brand awareness through conventional advertising alone.
WHY CHOOSE EXHIBITIONS: It is a common assumption that all visitors to a given B2B trade show will be the target audience for the exhibiting company. After all, most B2B shows are already segmented by specific industries; however, there are actually “targets within targets” at any particular exhibition. For that reason, it is important to “sort” the demographics at shows. It’s important to create a striking and visual exhibition stand so that it stands out at a show and attracts the right kind of visitors.
IDEOLOGY BEHIND EXHIBITIONS: Exhibitions provide a unique opportunity to display your product and business to large numbers of potential customers. A clear idea of what you are trying to achieve, and how to go about it, helps you maximize the impact of your stand and the number of sales leads. There has been a lot of speculation around whether exhibitions and trade shows are becoming a thing of the past and that many companies are not bothering to exhibit anymore. Company’s budgets and sizes are smaller but exhibition stands are still very much in demand. Sales are obviously important, but creating a good impression for your company is just as vital. Depending on the type of show you are attending, you can have a themed exhibition stand with lots of additions and giveaways, or you could have an informative and straight to the point stand with literature racks and a reception counter. Lights and graphics are also important to create an atmosphere and make your allocated space stand out. Lighting is very important on an exhibition stand to illuminate the graphics.
EXHIBITIONS AS A MAJOR MARKETING TOOL As a way to meet many potential customers face-to-face in a short period of time, and to do so cost effectively, trade shows can't be beaten, which accounts for their enormous popularity with compa-

nies of all sizes. Because trade shows generally take place at a single location, have short runs, and bring together thousands of exhibitors and potential customers, this is a very costeffective marketing medium. In marketing, trade shows are discussed mainly from the exhibitor point of view – their aims, decisions and evaluation of thetrade show participation, mainly selling techniques or the possibility of using trade shows for selling and communication purposes. It can be assumedthat the course of communication process between the exhibitor and visitor should be adapted to the preferencesof the visitor
Also, it's possible during the course of only one trade show to personally meet most of your important clients and suppliers, making shows a good way to establish and reinforce relationships.
KNOW WHY YOU ARE THERE: To get the most out of a exhibition, first determine what you want it to accomplish. Common reasons for exhibiting include: • Generating sales leads. • Generating actual sales at the show. • Enhancing your image and visibility.

• •
Reaching a specific audience. Establishing a presence in the marketplace. • Improving the effectiveness and efficiency of your marketing efforts. • Personally meeting your customers, competitors and suppliers. • Prospecting for new customers. • Introducing new products and services. • Demonstrating your product in ways not possible using other marketing channels. • Recruiting distributors or dealers. • Educating your target audience. Tradeshow marketing and PR is changing in step with the communications revolution. Traditional marketing tools can still be effective, but driving awareness of events and exhibits is more challenging than ever in a clutter of competitive communications. The most effective exhibition marketing and PR programs leverage multimedia assets to deliver real value to a show or exhibit by engaging target audiences with compelling messages and relevant information.
COVER STORY MAKING AN EXPO WORK IN A RECESSION LED CLIMATE:
At Exhibitions, time is everything, so you can't spend much of it qualifying leads. Yet the better you qualify leads during the event, the less effort you waste following up. A major time and money waster is the fish bowl into which everybody is encouraged to drop their business cards. It's much more efficient to qualify people before you ask for their card.
As the ‘credit crunch’ continues, exhibition budgets are often one of the first areas of spend to get the microscope treatment. It’s a dilemma that we all face and, in pretty much every scenario, it’s vital to continue promoting your brand, even when times are tough. All too often, in today’s e-culture, days are spent re-acting to emails, leaving little time to chat over the phone, let alone meet people face to face. Trade exhibitions give us a rare and valuable opportunity to get together as a whole industry and to
chat to customers and other manufacturers. In the current economic slowdown exhibitions and online marketing come into their own because not only are they effective but perhaps even more importantly they are measurable. With exhibitions and events the buyer/visitor chooses to attend in order to see the advertisements. Time is our most precious commodity. Customers give both their time and permission to clients at events, at a time they are ready to buy. Other forms of advertising hit their target audience on the 'off-chance' that they are ready to buy.
It is fast becoming a saying, “When the chips are down and the profits are dwindling, then go out & exhibit.. & exhibit smart!”

Inadequate Venues has backed the Growth of Exhibitions in India he Indian exhibition industry is in a modernization mode and growing at a rapid pace. New trade shows are being held, new exhibition centers have been constructed, and the market is opening up to foreign investors. The Indian exhibition market witnessed significant growth in the last 15 years. Several new exhibition venues came up during this period in several Indian cities. Despite this growth the country needs massive inputs as far as venue and space availability to hold

exhibitions is concerned. India has the same exhibition capacity as Chicago yet number of venues is by far lesser. India is far behind China, whose exhibition space is eight times larger and where the number of exhibitions held is also three times bigger. This inadequate infrastructure is obstructing the rapid growth of the Indian exhibition business. Venues are the most important obstacle facing the Indian exhibition; convention and trade show industry business. We need world-class infrastructure to host our big exhibitions.

The shortage of space in cities like Mumbai and New Delhi is a particular problem, as it is these cities that have the critical mass of potential visitors necessary to support a busy trade fair calendar. It is believed that for the Indian exhibition industry to achieve its US$990m market potential, needs to create an additional 800,000sqm of exhibition space. Currently worth US$160m, India’s exhibition industry has the potential to grow to US$990m. Opening up India’s international exhibition industry will bring benefit to people on every rung of the socioeconomic ladder, creating jobs and boosting international ties. With so much scope for foreign investment, India must embrace its exhibition sector. Grim Facts : India has huge potential to become an exhibition giant, but for the time being, two related statistics paint a glum story. The first is this: the relatively tiny island state of Singapore, a country with three truly world-class international venues, claims 40 million tourists every year. By contrast, tourist traffic in India last year was less than six million. The second is that China, the coun-
try perhaps most commonly compared with India in terms of size, growth and international potential, has almost four million square meters of space now, and an exhibitions industry over 10 times larger than that of India. Some major Venues of India • PRAGATI MAIDAN: PragatiMaidan is a venue for large exhibitions and conventions in New Delhi, and with 72,000 sq. metres of exhibition space, it is presently Delhi's largest exhibition centre. • BOMBAY CONVENTION & EXHIBITION CENTRE (BCEC): Bombay Convention & Exhibition Centre (BCEC) is the largest and permanent exhibition centre, in the private sector, in India and was set up in 1991. BEC has hosted several prestigious International trade fairs/exhibitions ever since. • BANGALORE INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION CENTRE: BIEC offers its exhibitors services and amenities of the highest quality on par with international standards. Chennai Trade Centre is a permanent exhibition complex in Nandambakkam, Chennai, hosting several trade fairs and conventions round the year. The Trade Centre is 6,714 m2 which includes a multipurpose hall of 1,900 m2, a stage of 500 m2, a banquet hall of 750 m2, a lounge of 269 m2, and business and meeting rooms. Venue rates in India are high. Despite this, it should be seen as economic development weaponry. In some places, organizers of exhibitions are charged with entertainment tax, and in some cases luxury tax. These are not viable approaches to promote the exhibition sector. Also, on the other hand, hotels are the
biggest beneficiaries of large exhibitions taking place in a city. CONCLUSION Indian Industry, very much in the nascent stage, remains unable to capitalize on the potential its international exhibition industry presents. The Indian exhibition industry needs to be recognized as an industry sector by the government. We call it the ‘exhibition industry’, but it is still not given that status by the Government, and it cannot be called with pride, an industry. It is time for the country to tap this opportunity by offering space for large exhibitions and events.

• Space Planning: This is the most important part of the exhibition stall designing. One has to plan the space for proper product placement, branding, live activities for good visibility. A good brief to the marketing person would help achieve the desired result • Cost Concern: The cost of the exhibition booth design and fabrication is based on the materials used. A high quality stall would have materials like wooden flooring, laminates, glass, steel, etc., whereas if one uses material like flex, paint, carpet etc, then it will be a cost effective stall • Appropriate lighting: The exhibition designer should take care of the lighting of the stand so that all the products and branding are in focus and the stand looks bright • Set-up: The exhibit design company should have a functional set-up with a proper office and fabrication unit with all the departments in place so as to manage the project professionally • Warehouse & Storage: The exhibition stall designing company should have its own warehouse & storage
Expert Speak: "Stall fabrication and designing is a challenging task as there is competition in the industry. Though it increases the visibility and recalls brand identity which is very important these days" - Mr. Ashwani Kalra, Director of Legend Expoevents Pvt. Ltd. "Depending upon the requirement of the client, presentation of the products should be displayed in a customized way. You have to be unique in your style to compete in this industry. " -Mr. Sunil Naagar, Director of Naagar Engineering "It is a growing industry and corporates should display their brand better with customized designs and portable displays." - Mr. Shekhar Kumar, Execution Head, Onixx Communication Pvt. Ltd. Usually, booth designers take notes from the client’s discussions and then work around those ideas to design the ideal booth for them. The client gives an approval for the design. The presentation should give an idea of layout, product display, seating arrangement, etc and also about the materials used. The design once finalized then goes to the production team to start the execution process. Thus, creating and designing a booth stall isn’t that simple as it looks. There is a lot of hard work and creativity that goes into it.
