Venice to start charging visitors entry fee from spring 2024

Venice plans to experiment with an admission fee of 5 euros ($5.35) for day trippers next year to try to manage the flow of tourists drawn to its historic canals, the city council said. The fee will be applied on a trial basis on 30 days next year, focusing mainly on spring bank holidays and summer weekends when tourism numbers are at their peak. All visitors over the age of 14 will have to pay it. The aim was to find "a new balance between the rights of those who live, study or work in Venice and those who visit the city," Venice tourism councillor Simone Venturini said. It is not a moneymaking move, he added, saying the fee would only cover the cost of administering the scheme The exact dates of the plan and how it will be run will be agreed after final council approval The plan, first mooted in 2019, was initially postponed because of COVID-19, which kept tourists away, and later for technical and procedural reasons. Over tourism has long been a problem for Venice In July, UNESCO experts recommended that Venice and its lagoon be added to its list of World Heritage in Danger, claiming that Italy was not doing enough to protect the city from the impact of climate change and mass tourism.

Thailand grants visa exemption to Chinese & Kazakhstani tourists from 25 September 2023

The British government has announced that a proposed hike in visa fees will become effective from October 4, when a visit visa for under six months will cost GBP 15 more and student visas will be GBP 127 more expensive for travellers from around the world. Following legislation tabled in Parliament, the UK Home Office said the changes mean that the cost for a visit visa for less than six months will rise to GBP 115 and the fee for applying for a student visa from outside the UK will rise to GBP 490 – to equal the amount charged for in-country applications. It comes after British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak had announced in July that the fees and health surcharge paid towards the UK’s state-funded National Health Service (NHS) by visa applicants are set to rise “significantly” to meet the country’s public sector wage increase. The hike in fees applies across most visa categories, including health and care visa; applications to register and naturalise as a British citizen; fees for up to six months, two, five and 10-year visit visas. The hike also applies for the majority of fees for entry clearance and certain applications for leave to remain in the UK.

The Royal Thai Government led by Prime Minister H.E. Mr S r e t t h a T h a v i s i n h a s announced the temporary tourist visa exemption scheme to passport holders of the People’s Republic of China and Re public of K azakhstan effective from 25 September 2023 to 29 February 2024, to achieve this year’s tourism revenue target of 2.38 trillion Baht. Chinese and Kazakhstani nationals will be granted a temporary visa exemption for a 30-day stay on tourism purpose in Thailand during the five-month visa exemption period During the five-month visa exemption period, Thailand is expected to welcome 1,912,000 to 2,888,500 Chinese tourists – a year-on-year growth of about 41-62% –and generate a tourism income of around 92.58-140 billion Baht. From Kazakhstan, Thailand has forecasted 129,485 Kazakhstani tourists – a 49.73% increase over the same period last year – and 7.93 billion Baht in revenue. The stimulus visa scheme takes effect just ahead of the Golden Week, one of the longest holidays in China, from 1-8 October 2023.

Santiniketan and Sacred

Ensembles of the Hoysalas have been inscribed on UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites during the recently held 45th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Situated in the tranquil Bolpur subdivision of Birbhum district in West Bengal, India, Santiniketan stands as a beacon of the vision and contributions of Maharshi

Devendranath Tagore and his illustrious son, Rabindranath Tagore Here, Rabindranath Tagore realized his dream of a university town, leading to establishing Visva-Bharati University, an institution of national importance and a Central University. Santiniketan has become the 41st location from

India inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas, situated in Karnataka, is a serial nomination of the three most representative examples of Hoysalastyle temple complexes dating from the 12th to 13th centuries in the present State of Karnataka - the Channakeshava temple in Belur, the Hoysalevara temple in Halebidu, and the Keshava temple in Somanathapura, built during the medieval Hoysala kingdom in southern India.

The excellence of the sculptural art of the temple complexes, as well as their architecture, siting, planning and use, underpin the Outstanding Universal Value of the property. It is now the 42nd World Heritage Site in India.

The Criteria for Selection

To be included on the World Heritage List, sites must be of outstanding universal value and meet at least one out of ten selection criteria. These criteria are explained in the Operational Guidelines for the Implementation of the World Heritage Convention which, besides the text of the Convention, is the main working tool on World Heritage. The criteria are regularly revised by the Committee to reflect the evolution of the World Heritage concept itself. The World Heritage Convention, adopted by UNESCO in 1972, strives to safeguard exceptional places for future generations, recognizing their universal value and the need for international cooperation in their protection

In order to make events like MotoGP into reality, a huge amount of material must travel from circuit to circuit across the globe One of the biggest challenges when organizing a GP is transporting all the material and equipment from one circuit to the next chosen destination for the race. Hundreds of tonnes of equipment have to be moved for each Grand Prix, including motorbikes from all three categories, all the teams’ material, and Dorna’s material that is fundamental for the competition.

With world top class riders and exceptional high quality equipment in place, MotoGP Bharat imprints a spectacle of speed, skill, and

excitement that will be remembered for years to come. MotoGP Bharat Grand Prix 2023 that took place at the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida from September 22 -24 witnessed an incredible turn out.

The Grand Prix of India featured 82 riders from 41 teams who had participated in the race of MotoGP, Moto 2 and Moto 3. The result is out now, Italy's Marco Bezzecchi won the Indian GP, Spain's Jorge Martin finished second position. This is the first time in the

history of the Indian motorsport industry that essential equipment had made its way to the Buddh International Circuit. Previously, F1 was held in the same circuit. The track hosted the F1 race between 2011 and 2013. The MotoGp event included an array of critical components, including

the MotoGP bikes, their engines, tires, and vital safety barriers, and had been air-freighted to New Delhi. From there, they were transported to the Buddh International Circuit, where this event took place.

Now let's dive deeper into the activities of this event and also understand the logistics involved in the execution of such events. Exhibition Showcase Magazine spoke to Mr. Ravinder Sethi, Managing Director, R.E. Rogers, and an exclusive logistics partner for Fairstreet Sports, who single handedly managed entire logistics affairs at the event.

Ravinder Sethi, said, "The bulk of the motorcycles designated for the event had successfully been brought to New Delhi by Boeing 747 and were transported to the Buddh International Circuit. Imagine how delicately the logistics had to be planned each step and its modus operandi in transporting the complete fleet of bikes. This was made possible by the support of my entire team.”

Commenting on the volume of the air freight that had to be transported to

the BIC, he said, "we had almost 70-80 tons of loose airfreight plus four 747 charters which came in a course of 3 days and ofcourse 40-50 containers of sea-freights.”

Exhibition Logistics Industry:

The global logistics market size was accounted at USD 7.98 trillion in 2022 and it is expected to reach around USD 18.23 trillion by 2030. The event logistics sector includes a variety of events such as entertainment events, sports events, trade fairs, and other cultural, festivals, corporate conferences, and governmentsponsored events

Timely delivery is a crucial metric in logistics. Be it on an import or an export movement the dedicated crew ensures timely delivery of goods. At the close of an events participants want goods and materials returned as fast as possible to complete their repacking and leave the venue. On small shows this is easy but on large show like MotoGp it is very time bound thus a challenging task for any logistics provider

One of the top challenges faced by the Exhibition Logistics Industry today is also bureaucratic red tape practice by most of the countries and so it directly

or indirectly hampers the smooth transition of work. With the imposition of such restrictions, it further creates loads and loads of additional work for the Exhibition Forwarder just to move something from one Country to another. Trade show freight is a very time-sensitive segment of the transportation industry

B747 is the most popular freight aircraft having one of the largest cargo capacities. It can transport payloads exceeding 100 tonnes and a flight range of around 13 hours Skyrocketing fuel prices, escalating security concerns, revised inventory management policies, competition from other transport modes, and industry consolidation—these five factors pose significant challenges for the air cargo sector. So, the challenges are many and will exist in future as well, but it is laudable that despite of many ups and downs our service industry manages to handle many such projects. MotoGp was a mammoth event and was successfully conducted within the decided time frame

This highly anticipated event opens many doors to business opportunities and growth in the Indian motorsports industry. The significance of the MotoGP race extends beyond the roar of the engines. With the kickstart of the first edition of MotoGp in India, such events open doors to increased investments in both the state and the nation at large

G20 leaders endorses Goa Roadmap and ‘Travel for LiFE’ program to provide big boost to tourism sector

The G20 Leaders' Summit in Delhi, on 9–10 September 2023, stands as a testament to India's leadership in fostering global unity and collaboration. The summit witnessed the convergence of the world's most influential leaders, united by a shared vision for the future. A significant milestone achieved during the G20 Leaders' Summit in Delhi was the unanimous endorsement of tourism and culture's pivotal role in sustainable socioeconomic development and prosperity

The 'G20 Leaders Declaration' adopted during the summit underlined the significance of the 'Goa Roadmap for Tourism' as a vehicle for achieving SDGs

Delhi Declaration provides a new direction for tourism sector with G20 Goa Roadmap outlining the challenges, objectives, opportunities and recommendations for tourism sector to achieve sustainable development goals. ‘GOA Roadmap’, the key deliverable of India’s G20 Tourism Track, is a pioneering initiative that provides a

blueprint for sustainable global tourism. By focusing on the five interconnected priorities identified and endorsed by the G20 Tourism Working Group - Green Tourism, Digitalization, Skills, Tourism MSMEs, and Destination Management - the roadmap offers a comprehensive strategy for nations to align their tourism policies with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 2030.

The Ministry of Tourism, in collaboration with the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), has launched the G20 Tourism and SDG Dashboard. This pioneering initiative will serve as a global repository, showcasing the best

practices and case studies of sustainable tourism practices and policies from G20 nations. It aims to be a comprehensive resource, aiding nations and industry stakeholders in their journey towards achieving the SDGs through tourism. In another significant development, the G20 leaders’ declaration has further noted the launch of the “Travel for LiFE” initiative, emphasizing its transformative potential in promoting responsible and sustainable tourism. Travel for LiFE nudges all tourists and tourist businesses to take simple actions, which have tremendous signification for environment protection and climate action.

Ministry of Tourism has aligned its programs and initiatives for promoting sustainable tourism under ‘Travel for LiFE’ program and the campaign will cover the entire tourism ecosystem, motivating and inspiring all actors to contribute in making tourism sector sustainable and responsible. While recognizing the LiFE actions by tourists, the Ministry will also recognize the tourism businesses as TFL certified based on STCI criteria of the Ministry. It will also encourage the tourists and tourism businesses to take a “Travel for LiFE’ pledge, which will reflect their commitment for sustainable practices.

The Ministry of Tourism also envisions transforming and promoting the host cities of the G20 Meetings in India into global MICE destinations for national and international meetings

Investment in the global tourism

cluster has started to bounce back from the lows it touched during the pandemic off the back of the steady recovery of international tourist arrivals, according to a newly released report jointly produced by UNWTO and fDi Intelligence

Ÿ The report, which is based on data from fDi Markets, fDi Intelligence's proprietary database of greenfield FDI projects, as well as international tourism data from UNWTO, provides a broad overview of the ongoing investment cycle in the tourism sector, breaking down investment figures by region, segments and companies. Key findings include: Both FDI project numbers and job creation rates in the tourism cluster

grew by 23% from 286 investments in 2021 to 352 in 2022. Job creation in tourism FDI also increased by 23% over the same period, to an estimated 36,400 in 2022.

Ÿ The leading destination region for tourism FDI projects in 2022 was Western Europe with 143 announced investments at a combined estimated value of $2.2bn.

Ÿ The number of announced projects into the Asia-Pacific region increased marginally by 2.4% to 42 projects in 2022.

Ÿ The hotel and tourism sector accounted for almost two-thirds of all projects in the tourism cluster between 2018 and 2022. FDI projects increased by 25% from

"To ensure the growth and competitiveness of the sector, significant investments must be made in education and talent by upskilling the professional workforce and implementing vocational and technical programmes. Only in this way can we equip young people — of whom only 50% have completed secondary education — with the knowledge and capabilities they need to thrive in the sector. These investments will then pave the way for a skilled workforce that can deliver exceptional growth, drive innovation and, by embracing digital technologies, enhance the competitiveness and resilience of the tourism sector," says Zurab Pololikashvili, UNWTO SecretaryGeneral.

TMS. Could you provide the readers about your early life and career?

Prue Daly I’ve been working in the hospitality and events industry for over 20 years now and started my career with a coveted training placement with leading hotel group Accor. This placement led to a career with Accor where I worked for several years in various business development and sales management roles. Over the next decade, I broadened my experience with other leading companies in the events and hotel industry including the Melbourne

During my 7 years at MCEC I was awarded a number of industry accolades, including Meetings and Events Australia’s National Business Development Person of the Year

In October 2016, I made the move “across the ditch” to join the New Zealand International Convention Centre (NZICC) team as Director of Sales & Marketing where my key responsibilities included the development and implementation of sales, business development and marketing activities and programmes; recruiting a new team of professionals; maintaining strong relationships with association, government and corporate clients; and strengthening the strategic partnerships with Auckland Convention Bureau and Tourism New Zealand to ensure the success of large-scale international bidding and the growth of the business events sector for New Zealand Unfortunately, a fire on the construction site of NZICC in 2019 caused the building opening to be delayed and required me to lead the NZICC team and our

Prue Daly, General Manager, New Zealand International Convention Centre - NZICC
“India is a important emerging market

clients through a very challenging period while still ensuring NZICC was being considered for future business opportunities

TMS. What are your plans for NZICC after assuming the charge as GM?

Prue Daly In April 2023, I was promoted to General Manager of the NZICC in preparation for opening in 2025. As General Manager, I’m responsible for ensuring NZICC offers a world class delivery experience for our clients and guests and driving international bidding which will contribute $90 million in economic impact. I’m also responsible for building a NZICC team that is focused on excellence but is also thoughtful in how we embrace and deliver our sustainability goals, community impact to Tmaki Makaurau Auckland and creating authentic New Zealand experiences so our clients and guest leave with a deep appreciation for our unique New Zealand culture

TMS. Located in the heart of Auckland City, what makes it one of the best exhibition centers in the world. Please share with us its key features

Prue Daly. I think what makes NZICC special is that it was designed by world-class architects alongside event

industry experts and our future clients. This collaborative process saw us run extensive experience design workshops with over 70 people who will be our end users including delegates, PCO’s and event bookers and industry service suppliers. These experience design journeys created a building design that is versatile, flexible and adaptable.

The NZICC is dedicated to creating an unforgettable experience, and this starts with a centre that is memorable, provides a place to welcome visitors and show our true culture of innovation, maanakitanga, and uniqueness. We worked with local artists Peata Larkin and Sara Hughes to capture New Zealand's values and strengths of doing things a little differently, our incredible natural landscape and unique light, our brand values around personality and transparency, and channelled this into a defining experience of New Zealand through art integrated in to the building.

TMS. Auckland is undergoing an unprecedented transformation, while Domestic markets are often limited in size, which can restrict a company's growth potential, in what way the domestic market opportunities means to NZICC in generating a large proportion of repeat business?

Prue Daly The local New Zealand market is incredibly important to NZICC and we know they are eagerly waiting for a venue of scale in Auckland. A lot of our clients see NIZCC as an opportunity to grow their events to scale they haven’t been able to do so in New Zealand previously and we are excited to be able to support this

We also work with our local association, academic and corporate clients on how we can support their growth by partnering together on international bidding opportunities. We strive to be a true partner with our clients and their events and believe it is through this mindset that we will become their venue of choice in New Zealand.

TMS. Appropriate strategy and planning are essential for growing the business events and drawing more shows from around the world. How has your team contributed to achieving this objective?

Prue Daly We have very strong partnerships with Tataki Auckland Unlimited who manages the Auckland Convention Bureau and our national tourism body Tourism New Zealand. We collaborate and work together to be strategic in our approach on the conferences and events we want to attract to NZICC, Tamaki Makaurau Auckland and New Zealand. When we are travelling globally to attend events such as IMEX, we know that as ‘Team New Zealand’ we are stronger than each of the individual destinations and venues

We are fortunate to have a strong and collaborative business events community in New Zealand, where each

destination and venue come together to make sure New Zealand is represented first and foremost.

TMS. Are there any upcoming projects that you are working on that you can disclose at this very moment? What major events are in the pipeline?

Prue Daly We recently announced that NZICC will be the host venue for WIPCE 2025 – the World Indigenous Peoples’ Conference on Education in November 2025. WIPCE is the largest, most diverse Indigenous education forum in the world, and is expected to attract some 3,000 representatives from around the world to New Zealand to share strategies for culturally grounded education.

Indigenous Maori culture is so important New Zealand so it is such a privilege to be part of an event that can celebrate this and highlight the important work being done in our education sector on a world stage. Without NZICC, this event wouldn’t have been able to come to New Zealand.

TMS. What according to you will be the role of venues and the preparations they will need to thrive in the new normal?

Prue Daly I believe that venues need to step out of the supplier role and become a true partner with their clients and industry for the success of everyone. For example, in New Zealand, NZICC presents a real step change for our local business events industry, and

we feel a responsibility to make sure our clients and local business events community are on the journey to creating world class experiences alongside us.

TMS. Can you highlight some tourists attractions in Auckland?

Prue Daly Within walking distance to NZICC we have the iconic Sky Tower – which no visitor to Auckland should miss, whether it’s visiting the observation deck for a 360 degree view of Tamaki Makaurau Auckland, or enjoying a drink or a meal with the same spectacular view. We also have Weta Workshop Unleashed and the All Blacks Experience close by

These are two relatively new, uniquely New Zealand experiences. Weta Workshop is world famous for working on Lord of the Rings amongst many other movies and their experience lets you understand the magic of movie making in a hands-on way. The All Blacks Experience shares the story of New Zealand culture through Rugby and offers a spine tingling opportunity to face a haka from The All Blacks

But if stunning scenery and food and wine are your thing – then a 40 minute ferry ride to beautiful Waiheke Island is a must. Here you can explore pristine beaches and world class vineyards. It would have to be my favourite place to visit in Tamaki Makaurau.

TMS. On a personal note, we are curious to know what keeps you busy when you are away from work? Please tell us about your hobbies and other activities that you would love to do at home

Prue Daly I have a wonderful bunch of foodie friends and we are always trying out new restaurants that are opening in TAmaki Makaurau Auckland. I have a never ending list that we are trying to tick off, but never manage to do as we are always adding new ones on.

I also love to travel and while this has been hindered the last few years, during Covid my husband and I managed to visit from the tip of the North Island all the way to the bottom of the South Island – I just loved it. I really got to experience New Zealand’s manaakitanga first hand. But most of all, in my downtime, my favourite thing to do is spend quality time with my family, friends and my Boston Terrier dog Lollie.

TMS. What would be your message to the industry?

Prue Daly A huge Thank You! The journey to NZICC opening has be far from traditional and through this whole process I have felt nothing but embraced by our industry both locally and globally

During both the fire at NZICC and my recent promotion to General Manager the overwhelming messages of support for myself and the NZICC team has just been incredible and very humbling. I’m not sure there are many industries that are as well connected and supportive globally and I think that’s special. I feel very lucky to work in this industry

DAUGHTER DAY SPECIAL September 2023

Rajani Nair Deb. The glass ceiling is a reality, not unique to the hospitality and MICE industries. While these fields have seen women excel traditionally, their presence in senior roles remains disproportionately low compared to men. In my view, two primary factors contribute to this disparity. Firstly, women often exit the industry due to its demanding nature, including long hours. As family responsibilities increase, such as caring for children or elderly parents, careers can take a back seat. Secondly, networking plays a pivotal role in ascending to senior positions. Success often hinges on our ability to leverage our networks, but this poses a challenge for women who may have limitations on travel or the number of networking events they can attend weekly

The solution lies in fostering equity for women, both collectively and individually. Women leaders possess ample

In my view, success should be solely based on merit and should not be influenced by gender or gender identities Equity is the key that empowers individuals to perform at their best, regardless of their diverse backgrounds, personal circumstances, or educational opportunities. Offering equity translates to providing a level playing field for everyone involved

TMC. How do you keep yourself motivated during difficult times?

Rajani Nair Deb. To achieve your goals, it's essential to maintain a long-term perspective and stay focused on your ultimate objectives. Every new day presents fresh opportunities for growth and progress. By consistently keeping your eyes on the prize and considering the bigger picture, you'll be better equipped to navigate challenges and

talent, knowledge, and a willingness to go the extra mile What's needed is an ecosystem that empowers women to excel from their current positions, ensuring they can perform to their fullest potential

TMC. Your thoughts about why we need gender parity in our industry?

Rajani Nair Deb The Hospitality and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) Industry has historically been characterized by the significant involvement of women. While gender parity remains important, I firmly believe that the current imperative is inclusivity and equity. Creating an environment where all gender identities are not only welcomed but actively encouraged to participate is paramount in fostering a thriving workplace

make the most of the chances that each day brings, ultimately moving closer to your desired outcomes.

TMC. What is the most significant lesson you've learned throughout your life and how has it impacted you?

Rajani Nair Deb I've come to realize that knowledge serves as the differentiating factor in becoming a leader. My commitment to staying well-informed has consistently prepared me for the next opportunity. This dedication to continuous learning allowed me to smoothly transition from being a on a career break for six years back into an active leadership role, reaffirming the value of learning each day. or exploring off beat trails together, recharge me. They instil a deep sense of gratitude and appreciation for what we've built together over the years

TMS. How do you balance your personal and professional life?

Rajani Nair Deb. I actively seek opportunities for personal enrichment each day because I firmly believe that selfimprovement has a positive ripple effect in every aspect of our lives. As I acquire knowledge, I also share it with my team, empowering them to engage in more value-driven conversations with our customers. These moments of quality time, whether over a quiet dinner, trying new cuisines, taking a stroll by the beach, or exploring off beat trails together, recharge me. They instil a deep sense of gratitude and appreciation for what we've built together over the years

TMC. Can you describe the challenges you faced in your early days in the industry?

Rajani Nair Deb. I embarked on my career in F&B service and steadily ascended the professional hierarchy. Along this journey, encounters with gender bias and stereotypical reactions only strengthened my resolve to challenge prevailing norms. Fortunately, I had the privilege of early-career mentors who embodied visionary hospitality, imparting the determination to bring my utmost to work daily.

I adopted a holistic approach to learning, extending beyond the confines of my job role. A notable instance from my early career was my unexpected request to assume the role of Stewarding Manager, a move that surprised my General Manager. I firmly believe that when you commit to something with unwavering belief, challenges become learning curves that propel you forward, helping shatter the glass ceiling

TMC. What is your advice to the present and coming generation?

Rajani Nair Deb. I offer these insights not as advice, but as personal lessons learned. Pursuing wealth alone confines

your true value. Chasing a specific job title restricts your potential. However, when you pursue knowledge, you embark on a path to enduring success. Learning continuously is an investment in opportunities for continuous growth, making it the key to everlasting success.

TMC. What is your definition of success?

Rajani Nair Deb Success, in my perspective, entails continuous evolution and adaptability in the face of new opportunities and challenges

TMC. What is the most challenging aspect of your industry and how do you overcome it?

Rajani Nair Deb The industry's most formidable challenge lies in the volatility of market conditions triggered by global events such as the pandemic we've all experienced, wars, or the looming threat of a recession. Although certain factors remain beyond our control, we can navigate these uncertainties through informed decisions driven by data and practical experience, effectively minimizing their impact.

TMC. Where do you see MICE industry in next five years?

Rajani Nair Deb Virtual networking and the rise of largescale hybrid events will remain significant trends in the industry. Technology will continue to bridge the gap between physical and virtual experiences, unlocking a world of opportunities for global connections. Destinations like Bengaluru, known for its exceptional connectivity and MICE venues like the Hilton and Hilton Garden Inn Bengaluru, will emerge as prime MICE hotspots Augmented reality will revolutionize the experience for both attendees and event planners, allowing for remote planning and interaction.

Sustainability will take center stage in event decisions, as both participants and organizers prioritize eco-friendly practices to make a positive environmental impact. Hyperpersonalized experiences, where attendees can tailor their event journey regardless of scale or location, will become the new standard. Finally, India is poised to become one of the world's leading MICE destinations.

Ong Wee Min. Marina Bay Sands is a hospitality destination that places sustainability at the core of our offerings. Sustainability is comprehensively and seamlessly integrated throughout every step of our business to ensure environmentally-responsible practices

The integrated resort focuses its sustainability efforts on four key areas:

Ÿ Green buildings;

Ÿ Environmentally responsible operations, across 29 goals in Energy, Waste, Water, Plastic & Packaging, Sustainable Sourcing, and Biodiversity;

Ÿ Green meetings;

Ÿ Stakeholder engagement.

Taking an evidence-based, impact-first approach, MBS has significantly reduced our overall carbon footprint by over 50% since 2012, aligning with Singapore's goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050. In 2020, Sands Expo and Convention Centre became the first carbon neutral MICE venue in Singapore. Marina Bay Sands’ investment in Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) and carbon offsets covers 100 per cent of the carbon emissions generated from the meeting venue’s gas and electricity consumption. As the only triple-platinum certified sustainable MICE venue, Marina Bay Sands works closely with clients, integrating sustainability into event design and striving to achieve zero-waste events. Initiatives include digitalising

collaterals to reduce waste, allowing delegates to download soft copies through a unique QR code, and implementing ala-minute food stations to minimise food waste. From food waste management to achieving a zero-waste event, our team works closely with our clients and event organisers in the planning phase to ensure sustainability goals will be met. To help strengthen Singapore’s food security, we have an on-property MICE herb garden at Level 4 of Sands Expo and Convention Centre that provides 30 herbs used in signature dishes and drinks prepared by our banquet team.

TMS. How do you utilise technology at your venue?

Ong Wee Min. Marina Bay Sands leverages technology to revolutionise the MICE sector, continuing to provide cutting-edge solutions for events and immersive experiences during and post-COVID. In August 2020, Sands Expo & Convention Centre showcased our agility and commitment to innovation by creating the industry's first Hybrid Broadcast Studio (HBS) in just seven days This achievement demonstrated our readiness to meet the growing demand for hybrid events during COVID. The implementation of broadcast-quality livestreaming technologies bridged the gap between in-person and virtual attendees, offering remote viewers high-quality and seamless access to engaging content from anywhere in the world.

Going beyond livestreaming, Sands Expo also incorporated innovative technologies like holographic presence, Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Extended Reality (XR) capabilities. These advanced tools elevated the level of immersion and interactivity, transforming traditional events into captivating and memorable experiences. In October 2021, Marina Bay Sands introduced the Virtual Meeting Place (VMP), a fully customisable platform replicating real-life event spaces in virtual venues This technology empowered organisers to deliver engaging experiences and reach wider audiences

During the pandemic, Marina Bay Sands also served as a testbed for new meeting concepts and digital solutions, including temperature-checking kiosks, contactless registration via QR codes, and wearable dongles for tracking interactions. These not only enhanced safety but also enriched the event experience for organisers and delegates. Post-pandemic, offerings such as the VMP have been refreshed, allowing organisers to create customised mobile applications for easy access to event information and delegates’ contact details, as part of our omnichannel event strategy

TMS. What are some of the key MICE events that have been successfully hosted at your venue?

Ong Wee Min Sands Expo has successfully hosted diverse key MICE events, including high-profile events like Singapore International Water Week, TFWA, Token2049, ITB Asia, and International Luxury Travel Market (ILTM). The integrated resort has also hosted new-toSingapore events and major international rotating shows, such as ARTSG, Vinexpo Asia, INTA, and MDRT Global Conference in 2023. The ability to continue attracting and hosting these high-profile events at Sands Expo is a strong endorsement from our event organisers and delegates

TMS. How do you view the resurgence of travel after Covid?

Ong Wee Min. International visitors are now coming back in large numbers, and they are staying longer and spending more as they seek out more premium services. These visitors are keen to explore more of what Singapore has to offer. For Marina Bay Sands, we have also stepped up with refreshed offerings and a greater focus on experiences centered around wellness, personalisation, and engagement. To cater to guests prioritizing wellness, we introduced ondemand services, such as a live jogging app suggesting scenic routes around Marina Bay, virtual gym, and yoga accessible via a digital platform from the comfort of guests' rooms. For eco-travellers, we have strengthened eco-friendly solutions like using recycled wooden blocks from disposable chopsticks for guests to request a change of bed linen These initiatives align with our sustainability efforts, aiming to reduce our environmental impact without compromising

guest experiences. We adapt to evolving traveller preferences by offering flexible booking policies, curated experiences, and a focus on wellness and sustainability. The integration of technology, such as mobile apps and digital concierge services aim to provide our guests a seamless and personalised guest experience. Beyond these, we have also observed visitors becoming more sophisticated and inclined towards bespoke experiences. Through the Bay Precinct strategy, we collaborate with our hotel, attractions, retail and dining partners across Marina Bay to offer curated bundled experiences with limitless possibilities

TMS. What is your observation on the Indian market and business coming from Indian travellers?

Ong Wee Min Since our inception, Asian countries have been a pivotal demographic for us. According to the Singapore Tourism Board, Singapore received over 650,000 travellers from India in 2022, making it the second-largest source market after Indonesia. Notably, India also contributed the largest post-pandemic incentive groups in 2022 At Marina Bay Sands, India continues to be a strong source market for MICE, and we have been seeing the healthy return of Indian MICE groups and events These events are typically booked three to four months ahead. We maintain a positive outlook and eagerly anticipate extending a warm welcome to more Indian travelers at Marina Bay Sands.

TMS What message would you like to share with the industry at large?

Ong Wee Min. We are in the midst of a multi-year transformation which will see elevated suite and service offerings. To date, over 1,000 hotel rooms in Towers 1 and 2 have been completed as part of the renovation. The transformation in Towers 1 and 2 is expected to be completed by the end of 2023, with the renewal continuing into Tower 3, the Hotel Lobby, and Sands SkyPark. The suite of world-class experiences will also encompass a revamped Executive Club lounge, new premium fine dining options, and health and wellness offerings, elevating the landmark to a fresh benchmark in Asian hospitality. With these ambitious plans, the integrated resort looks forward to offering guests unrivaled and unforgettable experiences for years to come.

World Tourism Day 2023 is being celebrated to reflect on the growing importance of tourism and the need for green investments, something which goes hand-in-hand with the exhibitions and events industry. Tourism, as we all know, plays a pivotal role in societal and individual lives, more so, in contemporary times when climate emergencies are becoming more of a norm, highlighting the need for us to shift to a sustainable economy and minimize our carbon footprint. World Tourism Day 2023 is also a reminder for us to endorse tourism projects that can make a vast difference in our lives.”

Indian tourists are going to be amongst the top spenders in 2023 for travel. as the flights are still going full and there are plenty of other visitors at popular travel spots. Amongst the travel choices, weekend getaways will be more popular this year.

MICE Tourism or Business Travel is one of the key revenue spinners and employment generators directly or indirectly. During the past several months and as part of India's G20 Presidency, meetings at different levels of G20 Nations were held in 60 Indian cities. The strength of the Indian MICE brand lies in world-class Conference infrastructure, exotic accommodation, an array of exquisite destinations combined with old-world tradition with cosmopolitan sophistication

Tourism is the engine for economic growth which generates not only employment in various sectors but also earns valuable foreign exchange for the country. Economically it is rotating huge spending by tourists domestic or International through which a huge amount of GST is being collected by the Centre and State Governments. This money then encourages the Government to develop the infrastructure of our country in the shape of Roads, airports, sea ports, cleanliness and visitor attractions for tourists which is also beneficial for our citizens.

Looking at the current trend of tourism growth in the country especially after COVID, destinations in the country are experiencing unprecedented footfall of tourists, especially at J & K. Stakeholders in Kashmir Valley are pleased to witness the rush in tourist arrivals with a record number of flights operating from Srinagar Airport. Similarly, Ladakh is also an equally blessed destination. With MICE catching up Corporates are back to their business visits to various places. G20 Delhi Summit eighteenth meeting of the Group of Twenty (G20), a summit in Pragati Maidan, New Delhi in 2023 will leave a lasting impression on the visitors on the potential of Indian tourism that can play a vital role to international travellers.

I am very happy and pleased to see the Tourism Industry back in full force and on track post-C. I am very happy to be part of this wonderful Industry, which is bringing people from different cultures together and making the world a better place to coexist. I recall the strong words of our beloved Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi who is so very apt in this time and age = “Terrorism Divides the World and Tourism Unites the World.

Tourism and green investment” is the most apt theme chosen. We are on the cusp of running short on green initiatives to protect Mother Earth and the environment. The whole world has benefitted from tourism in the last 50 years or so and now Earth is running out of steam with 6 out of 9 parameters already crossed. It’s high time to make green investments. Even the remotest of the tourist sites are facing the brunt of excessive human footprints without protecting them. Tourism is a basic human need and we must invest both morally and financially for its upkeep and a safe green environment.

World Tourism Day 2023, themed 'Investing in People, Planet, and Prosperity' emphasizes the importance of targeted investments beyond conventional ones to foster tourism's growth and sustainability. This call to action encourages global collaboration among governments, financial institutions, development partners, and private investors for a new tourism investment strategy. In conclusion, World Tourism Day 2023 highlights the imperative of investments in education, sustainability, and innovation to ensure the tourism sector's resilience and contribution to global development goals."

Our government is already working on Sustainability by pushing biofuel and our history, rich heritage, flora and fauna, wildlife, culture and traditions shall work as catalysts to achieve the targets provided we capitalise on the global image created by the G20 Summit and G20 Presidency and keep our marketing efforts robust. With the immigration of "Yashodhara", International Convention Centre at Sector 25, Dwarka, we can now attract big international MICE groups. Big Fat Indian Weddings has shown the world that Indians have enough disposable income and we have been spending the most, not only in India but also while abroad that is why all International Tourism Boards are targeting the Indian Market.

As we all are coming out of a very dark phase in the Indian In-coming industry with hope and optimism of recovering our businesses during season 23-24, as things around us are looking much better even though some of the challenges remain in front of us, like hardly any marketing activity in various source markets, High airfare especially for India and high hotel rates along with very difficult conditions in forced by hotels, my sincere request to our hotel colleagues that every segment of business carry equal importance, therefore, they should extend their full support in our endeavour s to get back to pre-Covid number of tourist from leisure segment ( In- Coming ).

Vinod Zutshi, IAS Retd Former Secretary, Ministry ofTourism, Govt of India

The global community, governments, multilateral financial institutions, development partners and private sector investors must therefore work together for green transformation of the tourism sector by making green investments in all spheres of this sector including sustainable accommodations; adoption of renewable energy; conservation of natural and cultural heritage; community development; ecofriendly transportation infrastructure and educating stakeholders about sustainable and responsible tourism practices.

The stakeholders of the tourism industry mentioned every aspect of tourism, its importance and how it has been flourishing day by day. Its growth has led to the growth of other businesses. They also mentioned how this World Tourism Day is special as it not only focuses on tourism but also the future of our planet Earth and relates tourism and green investment.

The MICE industry is a substantial revenue generator for various sectors including hospitality, tourism, transportation, event management, and more. The industry creates a wide range of jobs, and attracts international participants, leading to business deals, collaborations, and partnerships promoting tourism, encouraging repeat visits, and enhancing the country's international image. It provides opportunities to showcase

India's diverse culture, heritage, and attractions, enticing attendees to explore beyond the event itself.

The industry has several opportunities as ongoing and planned infrastructure investments, such as conference centres, hotels, and transportation facilities, provide chances for larger and more diverse events to be held.

India's status as a worldwide technology and innovation powerhouse makes it a desirable location for technology-related conferences and events. The excellent healthcare facilities and experience in medical tourism provide chances for holding healthcare conferences and events.

There is also an increasing need for environmentally friendly and sustainable event practices, which creates potential for businesses that can provide eco-conscious event planning and services. Furthermore, wellness and mindfulness retreats, cultural and heritage events, and specialised industry conferences can be organised.

However, the industry is also facing several challenges such as the scarcity of world-class venues and accommodations. Obtaining the appropriate permits and licences for large-scale events may be a timeconsuming and complicated procedure High tax rates on MICE-related services, such as venue rents and event management, can raise the entire cost

of holding events. Maintaining uniform quality standards across venues, lodgings, and event services can be difficult, influencing participants' entire experience. Some places in India, particularly non-metro cities, may experience issues in terms of direct air access, making international attendees less convenient. India competes with other well-established MICE destinations, which may have more advanced infrastructure and simpler processes Domestic and international political instability might have an impact on the decision to host or attend MICE events in India.

As we celebrate World Tourism Day, we are reminded of the incredible potential of travel to bridge cultures,

encourage understanding, and establish enduring ties among people from all around the world. This yearly commemoration serves as a reminder that our planet is a fabric of varied cultures, landscapes, and customs, each with its tale to tell. As we reflect on the significance of this day, let us reaffirm our commitment to responsible and sustainable tourist practices, ensuring that future generations can continue to be fascinated and amazed by the wonders that this world has to offer

Let us begin on a journey of discovery together, cherishing the limitless beauty and cultural richness that make our globe a remarkable place to explore and cherish.

Building on a fleetwide initiative to add even more options for guests in its dining rooms, Carnival Cruise Line is introducing new vegan menus, that have just been added on board Carnival Freedom in Port Canaveral, Fla. and Carnival Horizon at PortMiami. Going forward, the new vegan menus will be implemented fleetwide in a phased approach through the end of year

Carnival chefs created recipes for each menu item to be prepared without the use of animal products, and the proteins included are made from meat substitutes

our vegan offerings and emphasizing them with specific menus will help to make ordering easier in the dining room and preparation more efficient in the galley.” The new vegan-specific menus will be introduced throughout the fall. The new offerings were already piloted on Carnival Magic Carnival Dream will be the next ship to implement the menus and by the end of this month, guests will be able to order from the menus on Carnival Valor, Carnival Radiance, Carnival Miracle, Carnival Panorama and

City of JOBURG ready to welcome visitors during Tourism Month

With gorgeous late sunsets and ideal weather, springtime in Johannesburg offers an incredible calendar of festivals, carnivals and events, showcasing the city at its very best – and showing off its credentials as a year-round global destination for business, lifestyle, leisure, culture and music. September is Tourism Month in South Africa, with the United Nations World Tourism Organisation celebrating World Tourism Day

annually on 27 September. “It’s also the start of the spring season, an ideal time of year to explore and experience our beautiful country and our great city of Johannesburg,” says Laura Vercueil, the Public Relations and Communications Manager for Joburg Tourism.

According to SA Tourism, the country’s tourism sector is lagging behind many markets, and experienced a 22% decrease in Q1 2023 compared to 2019 levels. This underscores the urgent need for strategic measures to boost recovery and return to prepandemic performance

“Tourist arrivals increased by 57.6% to 2 million compared to 2022, led by

Africa and followed by Europe. While these figures represent growth, we’re still not hitting our target, indicating a clear call for enhanced strategic efforts,” says SA Tourism. Tourist spending has not only rebounded but hit R22.5 billion this quarter - a 101.9% growth over last year and a 28.4% increase compared to the same period in 2019.

“South Africa’s geographic spread index is contracting, down to 8.0% this quarter – a 3.0% drop from last year and still lagging behind the 11.8% from April 2019. This downward trend indicates an urgent call to action for collaborative route and product development,” says SA Tourism. Vercueil notes that although the tourism industry took a knock since the pandemic hit the country, there are still countless opportunities and initiatives that could change the direction of the tourism industry

The popular tourist attraction,

Visit Carlsberg, after five years of extensive modernization, is ready to re-open as Home of Carlsberg with a new and larger exhibition and a historical area to unfold the story of Carlsberg. Since 1847, The Carlsberg Brewery brand has brewed beer at the top of Valby Bakke, which today is known as the Carlsberg City District in Copenhagen. The brewers J.C.
