SWOT Strenghths

Peer to peer transfer Evolves according to student preference Built resource bank could be used by future students.

Weakness

Dependent on student interests? Too demanding on students?

Oppurtunities

Could bring in new people for new industries opening new job oppurtunities.

Threats

Weakness

Less demand could lead do less usage / less value

Oppurtunities

Larger community could get visible and attract more oppurtunities for lab space & ITI Students in general.

Threats

Dependence on external faculty to come and do the workshops

Oppurtunities

Doesn’t depend on external supoort as much.

Threats

COLLABORATION

SELF-UNDERSTANDING

The lab is structured along the four dimensions of an experience. Each dimension focuses on one life skill respectively.

1.Exposure Learning Objective - Students take ownership over the space.

Holidays are over; It’s the beginning of a new semester. Madhu and Srinivasan, two students go to the ITI.

At the end of the English class, their teacher takes them to a new room. It was not a regular classroom. It had cupboards around, boards, a stage and even a mirror!

The trainer says, “This is your room! And we are all going to build it together! We begin next week!”

1.Exposure Learning Objective - Students build collaboration skills.

For their first class, Ajith brings in a photographer. The class is divided into small groups. Each group is given one camera to share for the session.

The photographer takes the students through photography exercises. He teaches them how to take portraits too. The students do these in groups and share the camera.

At the end of the class, Ajith says,“Next class, we shall take portraits of each other. These portraits have to depict your qualities. You can bring props too.

1.Exposure Learning Objective- Students reflect about self - personality, strenghths.

Ownership and Personalisation of space. Introduction to a new skill Reflection about themselves & personality.

Madhu brings a badminton racquet to depict her active personality. Srinivasan brings an old TV’s antenna and attaches it to his head to show his passion for technology.

The students work in pairs and take portraits.Srinivasan volunteers to help Ajith print and put up the portraits.

When the students come to class next week, they all are excited to see their portraits put up on the wall !

1.Exposure Learning Objective- Students are exposed to many different activities.

Ownership and Personalisation of space. Introduction to a new skill Reflection about themselves & personality.

Week after week, the students participate in workshops. They make cardboard tables and stools for the room using videos and little guidance.

Ajith organises a nature walk where the students go for an outdoor trip with an external expert who tells them new and interesting facts about nature.

In another workshop, they create small cloth patches about their dreams under the guidance of a textile artist.

1.Exposure Learning Objective- Students reflect about their interests, build on communication skills, collaboration skills & Personalise the space to develop a sense of ownership.

Ownership and Personalisation of space. Introduction to a new skill Reflection about themselves & personality.

After a few weeks Ajith asks each student to choose between Arts, Nature & Technology after reflecting on which workshop they enjoyed most.

Madhu joins the Arts group. which is creating curtains for the room. They need cloth to do so. So they create posters asking for old clothes and put them up in the ITI.

After they collect cloth, the students use the patches that the students had made in a previous workshop. And put together a curtain of all their dreams!

1.Exposure Learning Objective- Students build on collaboration skills & Involve their families in their learning journey too.

Ownership and Personalisation of space. Introduction to a new skill Reflection about themselves & personality.

Srinivasan joins the technology group. They take pictures and makes videos of the other groups. They create a facebook page for the class.

When they go home, the students show their families what they’ve been making in class through the facebook page. They comment on the other groups work too!

Soon the room is ready, and all the students are excited to see all their hard work come together!

2.Experiment Learning Objective- Students build problem solving skills. They hone their trade skills in new ways.

Ownership and Personalisation of space. Introduction to a new skill Reflection about themselves & personality.

The room is now ready. For the next class Ajith brings in an expert technologist. The room is a setup with laptops and the electronicals components.

The technologists guides the students on how to use an Ardruino board. Madhu, Srinivasan are excited to use what they study about in a new way!

At the end of the two months with the technologist, The students in groups have created projects using the ardruino board based on arts and nature.

3.Expression Learning Objective- Students build communication skills. Involve their families in their learning journey too.

Ownership and Personalisation of space. Introduction to a new skill Reflection about themselves & personality.

Next class, Ajith introduces the students to a drama teacher. They spend the next few hours doing lots of theatrical exercises. The students have lots of fun.

They are too put up a show in a month and a half for their families and other friends in the ITI. The students organise themselves into various groups -music, sets, video, etc.

The day of the show arrives! Madhu’s parents watch her proudly as she dances. While Srinivasan proudly shows off the props he made to his family.

4.Extension Learning Objective- Students build on their self understanding, take ownership of their learning process. Peer to Peer learning takes place, they give back to the larger ITI community.

Exam time is nearing. Each student is to choose one topic from the syllabus and create a project that explains the concept. They are too make videos, songs, models etc.

Madhu chooses “Working of an oscillator” and creates a working model to explain the topic. When she presents her project in class, the topic gets revised for her classmates !

Srinivasan makes a video on “Safety precautions for working in an electronic lab’. Their trade skills teacher refer to their projects while teaching it to the juniors!
