Third-generation Ritchie’s work also provides plenty of food for thought

Raglan family’s proud academic legacy continues next week when a granddaughter of longtime Whale Bay residents Jane and the late James Ritchie graduates with her PhD from the University of Waikato.

Online website Voxy reveals that an overseas examiner described Isa Ritchie’s thesis – titled ‘Shared Lunch: An Ethnography of Food Sovereignty in Whaingaroa and Beyond’ – as “one of the best she’d read in over 30 years”. Emeritus Professor Jane Ritchie, now 82 and living in Raglan West, will be at Isa’s graduation on Monday morning along with daughters Dr Helen Ritchie from out the bay and Jenny – Isa’s mother – who currently lives in Wellington where she is an associate professor at Victoria University’s School of Education. Says Jane: “As Isa worked through her doctorate I enjoyed hearing her talk about her research and writing, and I couldn’t help comparing it with my PhD done back in the 1950s.” Jane – herself the daughter of academics Pearl and Ernest Beaglehole, who were based at Victoria University – was the ﬁrst woman at a New Zealand university to obtain a doctorate in psychology. She subsequently worked in Waikato University’s psychology department which was then headed and had been established by her husband James. Together the couple – while raising their own three and two adopted children

– went on to become prominent childrearing experts, their 1981 book ‘Spare the Rod’ damning physical discipline in favour of alternatives such as the positive reinforcement and time out methods of today. Jane is delighted to see that philosophy persisting into the third generation with Isa, who she often looked after when Jenny ﬁrst studied at Waikato and who is a mother herself now, of nine-year-old Tesla. Jane’s looking forward to Isa’s graduation at Te Kohinga Marama Marae on the Waikato University campus, and told Voxy she is extremely proud of her grand-daughter. “Her research is relevant, and I think will become more so as people become more conscious about food safety, security and food waste.” Isa’s ethnographic study focused around local food providers in Whaingaroa and other settings in New Zealand, exploring the complex interconnectedness of food and its links with the social and political, values and practices, tradition and innovation, wealth and poverty at global, local and personal levels. “I looked at the culture, customs, habits and differences of alternative food networks, mostly based in the Raglan area where there’s a community of small-scale local food providers,” Isa told Voxy. She spent time with and interviewed local food providers who have opted out of the mainstream food system, ﬁnding out

how they operated, the issues they faced to establish and sustain their operations and how they overcame their challenges, often ﬁnding alternatives to conventional economic systems. “I worked with a cross-section of people and businesses and non-proﬁt initiatives,” she said. “They included community gardens, small-scale organic and permaculture farms and other community groups, and businesses focused on producing and distributing local food such as cafes and bakeries, as well as those minimising waste and environmental harm.” Isa found that small-scale local food initiatives are often connected. “The economics of local food systems is dependent on relationships and trust which means that shared resources – land for example – can enable people to grow and share food and experiment with new ways of doing things. “They showed what’s possible and achievable even with minimal resources.” After years of study, Isa now lives in Wellington and works in public policy for the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment. “I’m also writing,” she says. “My novel ‘Fishing for Maui’ will be published next year and has food-related themes that draw on my doctoral research.” Edith Symes

he Raglan Golf Club last week held a colouring competition to promote their mini putt activity. The club caters not only for 9 and 18 hole golfers but also boasts a mini putt and entertainment area for groups to enjoy hours of fun in a beautiful and relaxed location. The mini putt area is currently undergoing an upgrade and will look great this summer. Seventy competitors entered the competition. Ages ranged from 2 1/2 years to 47 years. The judges, Sean Mills and Lynley Clarkson, found selecting the winners very challenging due to the number of wonderful entries. Some where very creative with extra colouring and added embellishments to their pictures. Sponge Bob was the cartoon character playing mini putt that inspired seventy competitors to colour in and submit their entries.

Prizes for the competition were awarded to Blake H. aged 4, Lola Banks aged 4, Olivia aged 6, Ryley aged 7, Ava Bower aged 9, Brooke Salmon aged 11, Cheyenne Dingle aged 12, Poppy Campbell-Briant aged 13 and special recognition to Isla Limbert aged 8 for the most sparkliest and very creative entry. Lola, Ryley, Brooke and Cheyere win $30.00 cash and a family mini putt voucher as ﬁrst prize winners. Blake, Olivia, Ava and Poppy win $15.00 cash and a family mini putt voucher. Isla wins a family mini putt voucher. From December to April the club house is open 11 am to 7pm every day except Tuesdays when the club house is closed. Sprinkler restrictions now in place

The move to Water Alert Level 1 was triggered by a significant increase in water consumption across the region. Water Alert Level 1 means that sprinklers should only be used between 6am to 8am and 6pm to 8pm, but a hose pipe can be used at any time. Warmer weather always leads to an increase in water consumption and since this time last month, use of Waikato District Council-supplied water has increased by 5% a week. Waters Manager Karl Pavlovich says that even though all of the Waikato District Council water supply is now metered, water conservation is still an important part of managing the economic and ecological impact of water supply. “The alert levels are key reminders or checkin points for our communities on how much water we are using as a whole and provide our residents a point to reflect on how they are using their water," says Mr Pavlovich. “Even though we’ve had a very wet year so far, we still need to react to the increased demand and the community can play their part by using water wisely ahead of what could be a long, dry summer. “There are lots of ways to conserve water, taking shorter showers, watering the garden by hand, or washing your car on a piece of lawn which needs watering can save hundreds of litres a day.” Hamilton City Council’s City Waters Manager Maire Porter said, recent summery weather has caused a noticeable jump in water use in Hamilton. “Over the past two weeks the city’s water use has increased by over 20 per cent, the warmer weather means pools are being filled and sprinklers are being turned on.” Waipa District Council Water Services Manager, Tony Hale said it was unusual to see water usage peak so early in the season.

“We have been monitoring the district’s water usage closely over the past few weeks and have seen a signiﬁcant increase in usage as the sun has come out. n 2013, Quenten Browne’s Year 10 students began their journey with harakeke (ﬂax) and weaving. Each week they met with Whaea Gwyn (teacher at the school) and her weaving friend, Annie Cochrane, to learn the art of caring for harakeke, harvesting it and turning it into a range of beautiful things – bracelets, baskets, backpacks and ﬂowers. But we needed to grow the special varieties of harakeke that have been selected and used for generations by Māori weavers. And so the vision began, with these students, and their teachers. A piece of land adjacent to the school and under Council ownership was a perfect site. Noel Barber from council gave the school use of this piece of paradise and prepared it for planting. The next day started bright and early with more challenges. The first event was the Blaster, which involved team challenges, like skipping together, sliding mat number games and memory tests. There was also a water challenge where competitors had pggwre.co.nz to exchange water via buckets attached to helmets - without using hands. “We could've gone a little bit faster in that event!” Said Georgie. Lastly the soaked team moved on to the minute-to-win-it challenge (only three teams passed this but not us). “The cup flipping was really difficult,” said Kahu, “but now I know what to practise for next time.” Our school is very proud to have such an amazing team, who always put their all into everything they do!

Paddy blessed the new classrooms along with the Raglan Area students. All the students and teachers walked along the classroom walls and brushed their hands against the wall to let the room know what its purpose is for, to help the students and adults learn and grow as the years pass. When everyone had ﬁnished blessing the building they all sat on top of the hill under the big tree looking down at the new classroom, we sang a song to ﬁnish off our blessing of the new Year 9 classrooms.

November 19, Emma and Ngakau left for O.P.C. (Outdoor Pursuits Centre) at Tongariro, for a week of outdoor adventures to boost their conﬁdence and leadership skills.

Throughout the week we did team challenges which were really difficult. More confident leaders learnt to help the ones who found it hard. For example: The Giant's Ladder which was a giant ladder held by wire that we had to help each other climb, had three people at a time climbing. The length between each wooden plank got bigger, the higher we climbed. The biggest length between the two planks was about two meters. “I found it very difficult when the next ladder was my height and I had to climb it. I enjoyed helping others who were struggling to climb,” said Ngakau. “My favourite adventure was the kayaking,” says Emma. As every day of the camp we started off with a trip to the resource centre to grab our two-man kayaks. Once we had learned how to tie the kayaks on the trailer we headed for Lake Taupo. Throughout the day we paddled

around rocks as well as jumping off them. We learned to use the “skirts”, which is a skirt you wear but it is designed to seal inside the kayak from the outside so your legs don’t get wet, and it gives you more control of the kayak. It makes it very difficult to get out when you flip because you have to pull a strap to be able to hop out of the kayak, while being under water. The overnight camp on Mount Ruapehu was cold and windy but awesome because of the waterfall close by. We climbed the waterfall and discovered a large piece of ice where the water was coming from. Emma was the first to climb the waterfall and was able to support others to climb. We developed friendships, leadership skills and were challenged physically and mentally. It was sad to leave on Friday and say goodbye to our new mates.

hat do Te Uku School, Whaingaroa Environment Centre (WEC), permaculture, and Waitetuna potter Clare Wimmer all have in common? Making magic happen.

On two separate Mondays this term, Te Uku School’s Year 7 and 8 students made olla with Claire Wimmer. Olla (oi-ya) are clay pots that can be used to water the garden. The magic part is how the water slowly soaks through the clay and into the soil. This process is called osmosis. Making the pots was fun. We got to pound, ﬂatten, wedge, roll, mold and smooth the clay. All that fun created two bowl shapes that were joined together with

a clay sausage. This might sound easy but we learnt that clay shouldn’t be tried quickly because the joins don’t work. This meant some of the pots needed to be squished and remade. We decorated the lids for the pots by painting them and scratching patterns. The completed pots will be ﬁred at 1035˚C. We are impatiently waiting to see what the ﬁnished pots look like. Q3: Winning the Raglan Clubs Anzac Essay Competition was super cool, and I’m also really proud of how my learning has progressed over my time at Te Mata. Q4: Friends and teachers are going to be a big thing for me. I believe that they have helped me grow so much. I’m also going to miss the really nice, laidback feel that our school has. Q5: Raglan Area School. Griffin Pohutukawa: Q1: Eight years. Q2: Camp is definitely one of the best times of the year for me. I also really love agricultural day because we get to see all of the beautiful animals, it is also cool to see my friends awarded with lots of ribbons and trophies. Q3: I got an excellence certificate for my science fair board, which I am really happy about. My basic facts have also been improving over the course of this year. Q4: I have so many things that I will miss about Te Mata School. I think I will really miss the awesome teachers, my friends and even all of the work. Q5: Raglan Area School. Stroopwafels a treat by Dutch and Delicious

his week we had a chat to Derk Barlagen, who has recently been making Dutch treats called stroopwafels.

Why did you decide to start selling waffles? When I lived in Holland, I used to work for a organic bakery. They also went to different markets in the area. I was able to work the markets too. It is a nice way of working and meet customers. And of course to make good money. When we were planning our immigration to New Zealand we liked to travel New Zealand and to sell at different markets. Stroopwafels and Poffertjes were the two main products that are very popular in Holland. I knew for sure people in New Zealand would like them here as well. Where did you get the recipe? When I bought the machine/iron press in Holland the salesperson gave

me a basic recipe. However, here in Raglan, I started to fine tune this recipe and changed almost everything. Until I had the result I’m happy with. Are they traditional? Stroopwafels are very traditional Dutch treats. Every market there is a stall selling fresh Waffles. Nevertheless, every waffle baker has its own unique taste in syrup and biscuit. Where can people buy them? At the moment people can buy them straight from me or order through Facebook Dutch and Delicious. They are also available at Indi coffee shop, the Raglan Fish at the wharf as well as Dutch market in Cambridge and Auckland. Trying to sell more markets coming period. I’m talking with different businesses in Raglan and Waikato area that are keen on selling my Delicious stroopwafels this summer.

All Waikato District Council offices and libraries to be cash free W aikato District Council offices and libraries will be cash-free from 17 February 2018 and rate payers should receive a flyer with their rates notices this week notifying them of this.

The move follows on from the Huntly Library and Council Office being cash-free since its refurbishment last year. The decision to be cash-free across all Waikato District Council sites was made in February of this year. “There are significant benefits to being cash-free which include substantial savings of time and money on managing security requirements. It also frees up our staff time to focus on engaging with customers in our libraries,” Customer Delivery Manager Angela Parquist says. “We can concentrate on building our libraries and offices into a safe hub for community activities, which is what people tell us they want.” It is estimated the majority of our customers will not been affected by this change. “Across our sites we know that

only 15% of people pay in cash. We recognise that, for some, this will require a change in behaviour but we have taken steps to ensure that the inconvenience to residents is minimised,” Mrs Parquist says. Once cash-free, sites will be able to take credit card and paywave over the counter. Credit cards will incur a 2% surcharge. Otherwise, Council offers a full range of non-cash payment options including eftpos to online banking options as well as free wi-fi at all its library sites. Banks are also able to assist customers to set up payment options. For customers still wanting to pay their rates or dog registration fees in cash, they can use a number of other businesses in each of the townships.
