The previous year, I’d had to penalise a boy for trying to hit one of our girls because he was unable to catch her again after she took the ball off him (luckily, she ran so fast he failed to connect). Then there was the time a year ago when our girls beat a bunch of boys in a semifinal at a 5 aside tournament, leaving some of the boys in tears and another accusing me of cheating when I refed the second half. The boys might have won the game, but one of them was overheard beforehand telling his team mates that they’d win because girls were easy to get the ball off. That single act inspired the girls to play a tough physical game with the boys becoming visibly panicked as the match wore on. Even closer to home, I’ve seen plenty of situations locally where girls have had to put up with things like boys laughing at their mate in goal whenever a girl achieves the, apparently, astounding feat of getting the ball past them. Aside from offering this litany of stupidity, I’m not entirely sure where to go from here – except to emphasise how very sick I am of these silly attitudes. I need to be clear about one thing though, I’m not here to criticise little boys, they’re only displaying attitudes picked up from the adults in their lives. Besides which, plenty of them have been on the receiving end of this sort of rubbish too, simply because their athletic ability isn’t as good as their peers. Maybe it’s time we stopped it. Aaron Mooar

As part of the fun the players were wearing mics and a commentator asked Lara, with a matey laugh), “You wouldn’t want to get out to a woman, would you Brian?” Lara laughed before stating in a serious tone that he was not going to get out. He did a few more exaggerated defensive shots and then 10 minutes later faced up to Goss again, at which point she got him out. To really rub it in she actually got him out twice in the one ball (caught behind and stumped) which is something I’ve never seen before or since. Maybe the universe was trying to tell us something, but it doesn’t seem like everyone was paying attention – and I’m not just talking about current cricketer, Chris Gayle, who was fired from a professional team last summer after hitting on a female presenter live on TV during a sideline interview. Closer to home, while coaching a girls’ soccer team two winters ago, the opposition coach let one of our parents know that since his team was quite good and ours was just all girls, his team was probably going to win! Much to our delight, we came back from 2-1 down to win 3-2, while that same coach spent the entire the game bawling his team out for the shame they were bringing him.

n Sunday, March 4, local firefighters attended a large bush fire at Whale Bay after multiple calls were made to emergency services at around 12.30pm. Originally covering an area of 50sqm, the fire very quickly spread to about 150sqm. This fire was significant in size and one of three bush fires that the local fire brigade have attended in the past week. While no one was injured and no buildings damaged, over nine firefighting units battled the flames for over two

hours to bring it under control. Raglan Volunteer Fire Brigade were supported by neighbouring units from Kawhia, Te Akau and Ngaruawahia. Kevin Holmes, Raglan volunteer fire brigade chief fire officer, said in a message on Facebook, “No doubt you would have all seen today's fire at Manu Bay. This was a significant fire and the third bush fire the Raglan Fire Brigade have attended in the past seven days. We have spent on average, five hours at each of these fires, thankfully assisted by neighbouring brigades from Kawhia, Te Akau and Ngaruawahia.

“There is a restricted fire season in force which means ANY open air fire other than a BBQ, cultural fire (hangi) or brazier needs a permit! Each year we see homes amongst bush areas lost to wildfires overseas. “The threat here is VERY real. Today's fire could have been catastrophic for the home owners in Manu Bay and Whale Bay. Fire is fast, very fast and there is a REAL risk in our rural and bush clad areas so please be careful.” Kevin suggests that If in doubt, visit this website for more information: www. checkitsalright.nz.

Tarot Talk

H

ello again from Tarot Talk - a weekly column in which I introduce a Tarot card for the week and provide a little information about it. I hope you continue to enjoy this space.

The Queen of Pentacles is a mature woman who is strongly connected to the earth. She is practical, sensible and responsible – a capable manager of people and resources. She has both feet on the ground, is caring and warm and likes to look after people and animals, being kind to both. This card can either represent a person or tell you that you have or need to develop the qualities of this Queen. The Queen of Pentacles represents prosperity and security. No one is more welcoming and nurturing than she. Her greatest pleasure is to care for others - making sure they are happy and secure. In day-to-day matters, she is sensible and practical. If something needs doing, she just takes care of it without a lot of fuss and bother. If necessary, she makes do with little and always comes through in a pinch. There is a down-to-earth, matter-of-factness about her. She is always loyal and steadfast. Because she is trusting by nature, others trust her completely. When you are hurting or in need, the Queen of Pentacles will calm your fears and share your troubles. More information about this card can be found on my Tarot Talk Facebook page https:// www.facebook.com/tarottalknz/ Tarot readings and tuition are available by appointment. End of an era as retiring couple close kitchen three decades on

Kelly, left, and Gun Lai opened the doors to Hong Kong Kitchen for their final day of business on Sunday.

I

t was last orders on Sunday for Raglan’s little piece of China – the iconic Hong Kong Kitchen, open just about all day every day in its prime downtown spot for the past 30 years. At 70 or thereabouts Gun Lai’s retired and so too has his wife Kelly, 17 years his junior. The pair worked together over the decades serving up Chinese takeaways – and other more Kiwi fare – while also bringing up two children in their home above the shop. It’s the end of an era for the hardworking couple but also the start of a quite different use for the premises. Says their 27-year-old son Adam, a mechanical engineer-turned-DJ who returned recently from Auckland to help his parents sort things and move out: “A whole new chapter for this place is about to begin.” Adam’s sister Julia is in Japan, where the 24 year old designs luxury handbags for French fashion house Louis Vuitton. But Raglan has always been home for the siblings, from first learning to speak English at the local kindergarten through to the area school where both ultimately became high achievers. Their parents came here before they were born – for a holiday after the sharemarket crash of the late ‘80s in which, Gun reveals, they “lost everything”. That’s when they spied the abandoned burger bar

on the corner of Wi Neera and Bow Streets. The then single-storey building up for sale was “leaking everywhere”, Gun recalls, and the walls were falling down. But they renovated it “bit by bit”. They’d just opened a restaurant opposite the Auckland Library before the crash, so simply transferred all its furnishings to Bow Street and opened the Hong Kong Kitchen, initially with a sit-down restaurant. They lived in a caravan out the back while Gun built a second storey to house his growing family. “I never actually experienced (growing up in) a residential area, only commercial,” Adam says. Road surfaces downtown were rougher back then, he reckons, whereas now they’re “good for skateboarding”. “And town just got busier and busier with more and more developments,” he adds. In more recent times the Lais have leased out prime parts of the old stucco building to other businesses – currently INDI skate-surf-cafe and Wrong Skate Shop – while continuing to run their own takeaways from an annexe with an outdoor courtyard which includes an impressive goldfish pond. They say this has helped offset Waikato District Council’s ever-rising ground rents on the harbour board lease land – spiralling costs which have now forced them out. “We thought we’d be here forever,” Gun laments.

First up in their retirement they’re off to Hamilton – where Kelly’s father lives – to do a bit of house-hunting, although Gun has no idea really where they’ll end up. He even mentions Australia as a possibility. He’s unfazed by retirement, though was still wondering late last week what to do with the three boats and jet-ski littering the backyard bordering Wi Neera Street Gun was a commercial fisherman in the Hauraki Gulf for a time, and operated a few charters here in Raglan. But he says he came from a market gardening background way back, working the land in the Wairarapa with family who emigrated from China to escape Communism. “I’ve done quite a lot of different things,” he reflects of a life which has also included work in commercial art and mechanical (aircraft) engineering. One initiative Gun’s probably best remembered for around town is organising spectacular community fireworks displays every year for a decade from about the year 2000. “I used the profit from selling fireworks (in the shop),” he explains. From this week the Hong Kong Kitchen’s new owner – Brian Ruawai of Cornerstone Roots, and instigator of Raglan’s Soundsplash music festival – was all set to take over, promising new developments focusing on a music and performance space. Public information sessions on Council’s Long Term Plan

W

aikato District Council is holding 15 public information sessions around the district on its Long Term Plan to help residents and ratepayers with the issues being raised for consultation and to answer any questions. The first of these sessions will be held in the southern part of the district at Tamahere Hall on 15 March, 6-7.30pm, and the final one will be held in the northern part of the district at Aka Aka Hall on 10 April, 6-7.30pm. The schedule of sessions includes more than one in different parts of the district, but not at the same place. So, for example, if Raglan residents miss their local session at the Raglan Hall on 28 March, 5-7pm, they’re encouraged to attend the session at

Te Kowhai Hall in the Newcastle Ward on 11 April, 6-7.30pm. The LTP 2018-28 consultation document adopted this week says the Council’s 10year plan aims to balance the need to spend on infrastructure (such as roads and waters services) - to maintain it and to develop it to accommodate growth - while also keeping rates at an affordable level. The LTP proposes a general rate increase of 6.24% for 2018/19, dropping to 4.8% then 3.73% over the next two years, and 3% in the following years. In addition there will be increases in targeted rates for localised services such as water supply and refuse collections, so overall rates rises may be significant for some communities. Public consultation on the LTP will include options for saving $28.3m on managing the district’s waters services,

with a recommendation that Watercare Services Ltd be contracted to supply these services through a Council-appointed Waters Governance Board. This would keep targeted rates increases under 5% for all waters services from 2019/20. Other options for public consultation include reducing the fixed charge portion of the general rate to reduce the rates burden on lower value properties. Details about the Council’s Long Term Plan, including its infrastructure and finance strategies for the next 10 years, are set out in the consultation document which will be delivered to all residents and ratepayers in the district. Consultation opens on 14 March and submissions close on Monday 16 April. WDC Raglan Inofrmation Session: Wednesday, March 28, 5.00pm to 7.00pm, Supper Room, Raglan Town Hall.

Graffiti turns art for new restaurant

G

raff artists Dallas Mihinui and Jason Messent, with the help of Royce Kerapa and Lance Messent, have left their mark on the wall. Their graffiti-style mural will give former Namaste Kitchen – soon to be The Red Indian – a splash of colour and inject a youth vibe into the restaurant on Bow St. New owners Shaji Thomas and Anish Ibrahim, along with new chef Rejoy Paul, are hoping the artwork and exciting new Indian/Arabic fusion street food menu will entice the youth market to enjoy dining out in Raglan.

“There’s nowhere for the youth to hang out,” Paul says. “We want to create space for them.” Using the power of Google and Facebook, Paul tracked down local artist Dallas and knew he had the right kind of street-style to tackle the mural. A professional graff artist for 13 years, Dallas will be hosting a graff art workshop for young people on Saturday, March 17 at the Raglan Community House. There will also be other workshops by hip hop MC David Greaves and dancer/ choreographer Royce Kerapa. Contact the community house for more information. Janine Jackson

The Laird McGillicuddy, as he’s better known, was to step into the TARDIS at Raglan Vintage & Retro a few minutes before midnight on Tuesday, Census Day, in the hope of being transported to another time. The law requires every person living in New Zealand between midnight on Census Day and noon the next day to fill out a census form. Posing for a photo at the Raglan wharf shop last Friday, the Te Pahu lifestyle block holder confessed he wasn’t sure where he’d be heading. “These TARDISes seem to have a mind of their own, so it may be forwards or backwards,” he said. Whatever, the Laird was hoping he didn’t go back before 1921 as the Raglan wharf wasn’t built until then and “I don’t imagine either passenger or craft would enjoy being submerged below high tide”. Worse still would be to go back to April 2010 and arrive in the middle of the disastrous Raglan wharf fire. Cairns’ previous anti-census activity has included twice completing the form in Latin, hovering in a hot-air balloon above New Zealand – Hamilton’s Garden Place, to be exact – and supposedly being cryogenically frozen and declared dead. Harvest time for Let’s Grow gardeners

Lola Connor, 4, Ines Wrigley-Gignoux, 4, Alana Walmsley, 4, Lhotse Simpson, 4 and Cole Horton, 3, can’t wait to taste their giant pumpkins.

P

int-sized gardeners at Let's Grow Early Learning Centre are reaping the fruits of their labour with a bumper crop of vegetables, including several giant-sized pumpkins. From collecting the seeds and planting out the seedlings to sorting out caterpillars and nurturing the bees, the youngsters are proud of their green-fingered achievements. Budding horticulturalist, Lola Connor, 4, says growing vegetables takes a lot of patience. “We had to leave them there for a long time and we watered them every day.” Let’s Grow educator, Petruschka Heinz, says the children learnt a lot more than just gardening skills. “They learn about kaitiakitanga – about being the guardians of nature and the environment, and understanding the profound

effect we have on our environment and the effect it has on us.” What started out as a secret garden has now developed into a jungle of vegetables, Petruschka says, with tomatoes, courgettes, marrows, beetroot and all manner of companion flowers to attract the bees. Keen to share their vegetable bounty with everyone at Let’s Grow, Ines WrigleyGignoux, 4, is readying her cooking skills for a shared feast. “We’re going to make [the pumpkins] into soup,” she says. Sharing the love through food is a vital part of manaakitanga the children learn about at the centre, Petruschka says. “They are learning about being hospitable and caring towards others, and being mindful of others’ feelings.” Janine Jackson

Helen Clark accepts 150,000 signatures for dolphins

B

erlin – Representatives of German conservation group NABU International, led by the organisation’s Chair Olaf Tschimpke, met with former Prime Minister Helen Clark in Berlin last week to discuss the need for greater protection of Māui and Hector’s dolphins.

Ms Clark also accepted over 150,000 signatures petitioning Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, Minister for Conservation Eugenie Sage, and Minister of Fisheries, Stuart Nash to fulfil an immediate ban on gill netting and trawling across the dolphins‘ habitat.

Ms Clark was in Berlin to attend the German Council for Sustainable Development, for which Mr Tschimpke acts as Vice Chair. "We are delighted to be able to present our petition to Ms Clark in person and urge her and her party’s coalition partners to honour their pre-election promise of fully protecting the dolphins from harmful fishing methods as a matter of urgency, “said Tschimpke. “Unless this happens, Māui dolphins won’t survive.” NABU International has been highlighting the dolphins’ dwindling numbers and actively

pursued their protection for almost to a decade. Besides making representations to scientific forums, the organisation has funded and carried out Māui and Hector’s dolphin research and engaged in national and international awareness and education initiatives. "The disastrous decline of Maui dolphins to around 50 individuals is simply a case of cause and effect," said Dr Barbara Maas, Head of Endangered Species Conservation at NABU International. “Less than 19 percent of their west coast North Island habitat is currently free of gillnets, while trawling is prohibited in less than five percent.

Maui Dolphin Day and Recycled Raft Race 2018 Xtreme Zero Waste Recycled Raft T Race results: he Raglan community once again celebrated Māui Dolphin Day on Saturday March 3, at Te Kopua/ Papahua Domain with food and activity stalls as well as information and workshops provided for attendees.

An immediate and complete ban of these fishing methods across all of the dolphins’ habitat and transitioning affected fishermen to dolphin-safe fishing methods or alternative livelihoods is the only way to ensure the dolphins’ survival,” said Maas. International experts agree. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is the global authority on the status of the natural world and the measures needed to safeguard it. Like the International Whaling Commission (IWC) and the Society for Marine Mammalogy (SMM), the IUCN has confirmed that the immediate and

widespread expansion of existing protected areas across the dolphins’ entire habitat is essential to prevent their extinction. "It is encouraging that two parties in New Zealand’s coalition government have pledged to do the right thing for the country’s only endemic dolphin and New Zealand’s increasingly dented environmental reputation," said Maas. “Unless they make good on their promise now, the small window of opportunity to save these exceptionally rare marine mammals will close for good.” NABU International
