SUNDAY SERVICES

Players came from Arapuni, Te Kuiti, Pirongia, Huntly, Taupiri, Frankton Junction, and along with six local teams, competed for top prizes kindly sponsored by Darryl Hawkins. We thank our greenkeeping team for the presentation of our LJ Hooker sponsored artificial grass green, which played very well. We played two games, shared a scrumptious lunch, then went out and played another two games, had afternoon tea, then enjoyed great comradeship with everyone. The winning combination was Dan and Wendy Weinberg and Ray Lincoln from Te Kuiti, with Bill Bond, Denis Pizer and Murray Eddy from Raglan

coming in second place. Two teams had the same amount of wins but on ‘points gained’ Dennis Gill’s team from Taupiri took third place over Blue Stephens, Darryl Hawkins and Des Bishop of Raglan, with 40 points over 31. Congratulations to you all. Our last Winter Tournament is scheduled to be played on Saturday 11 August. Our 2018-19 personnel are: Jack Peel (President) 022 156 7509, Eileen Stephens (Secretary) 8258323, and Ruth Rawlinson (Treasurer) 027 206 3171. So, contact any of these persons for any queries you may have. Roll-ups are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 1pm, weather permitting. Report in time is 12.45pm. Fees apply. leven Raglan Area School senior students bought home the Area Schools Regional Championship Cup from the National Sports Tournament 2018 held in Christchurch last week. They joined students from other Central North Island Area Schools, taking on the four other zones from around the country in seven different sports and were the overall top region winning in football (girls and boys), rugby, and basketball (girls and boys). Sporting highfliers Shay Cornes, Karewa Irvin, Te Kaha Broadbent King, Emma Blaikie, Adi-Grace Mooar, Jake Ellison, Sasha Kirkwood, Awatea Dillon, Keylin Walker Pitman, Rudy Regnier, Tommy Ford represented the school in rugby, soccer, netball, volleyball, basketball and golf. Shay Cornes, Karewa Irvin, Emma Blaikie and Adi-Grace Mooar were selected for the New Zealand Area Schools team, after showing great skills throughout the tournament representing the Central North Island team. Supported by Matua Quenten and Matua Te Whaiwhaia, the students competing in Area Schools were involved in specialist coaching and then team up with other area school students to compete nationally. As well as helping with fundraising, the two teachers went to Christchurch to support the young sportspeople in this highly competitive environment.

“It’s a testament to Matua Quenten’s hard work how successful our students have become," Te Whaiwhaia says. In the past few years, the school has upped its sporting game with many of the senior students proudly wearing the Raglan colours. Senior teacher Year 9-10 Joseph Rao says sport can be a motivating factor for learners and can enhance their schooling experience. Raglan Area School is now fielding strong senior teams in rugby, soccer, basketball and volleyball and a recent survey of Year 9 and 10 students found over 60 percent are playing for at least one of the school teams. “That’s (Y9 and 10) when kids traditionally drop out of sports,” Joe says. Due to the size of the school, Raglan Area School teams has students playing in several codes and many of the teams draw on the sporting talents of students from Year 8 up to Year 13 and some teams are mixed boys and girls. “We think of our teams as community teams.” Joe says the school is grateful for the support of local sponsor Mark Frost from Baylys Real Estate and to the Whaingaora community for supporting the many young sportspeople representing Raglan. The school is keen to hear from locals with skills to share with the school teams – either as one-off coaching sessions, managing or coaching a team. Contact Joseph Rao at joseph_rao@raglanarea.school.nz or 07 825 8140. Janine Jackson

Tarot Talk Hello again from Tarot Talk. I have been running a weekly column for several months now. In early March I moved from Raglan and I am now finding that the continued column is confusing for people who phone for an appointment and find that I am no longer in Raglan. So this is my last weekly column with The Chronicle. I would like to thank the team for their support. If you have enjoyed reading about the tarot cards then head on over to my Facebook Tarot Talk page. And if you would like to learn more about the Tarot, I run Intro to Tarot classes and will have a class coming up soon.

his T card Two of

week's is the Wands. This card says that an offer may be presented to you. If you don't feel right about it or it isn't enough, don't sell yourself short or settle for less.

There IS something better on the horizon. The twos in tarot represent discovery, cooperation, effort. Wands also represent energy - such things as: growth, personal identity, new ideas, goals, lifestyle, career, success, enthusiasm - the ways in which we present ourselves to the world. This card shows your intent. You've set things in motion and now wait to see what will happen. As ideas begin to develop, things start moving along, you begin to see how things materialize. It also means beginning a new project or venture. Trying something out; doing research. Allow yourself free rein and you could be surprised at the results. Make a plan before you start though and think about what or who can help you and what might be holding you back. Overall, great opportunities are on the way. More information about this card can be found on my Tarot Talk Facebook page https:// www.facebook.com/tarottalknz/ Tarot readings and tuition are available by appointment. Introducing Raglan to the world using social media

oosting Raglan and local B businesses using social media was the hot topic at a recent Boost Your Town event held at the Raglan Town Hall last Wednesday.

Over 60 people turned up at the event to upskill and gain knowledge in the art of using social media avenues Facebook and Instagram. Wood Works Raglan craftsman Ben Grant found #BoostYourTown useful for helping with the marketing strategy for his new business. “The workshop has been a great incentive to get out and market my emerging woodworking business using social media,” he says. The #BoostYourTown initiative was led by About Us founder Steve Adams in association with Facebook NZ and is designed to help business communities lift their online presence and performance. The workshop looked at how to use Facebook and Instagram effectively, from setting up pages to producing cool content and measuring results. “This is about putting towns on the map in a digital sense because Facebook and Instagram are where all the customers are. There are around 3.2 million New Zealanders on Facebook, so you could say everyone is using it,” Steve says. With many people turning to online shopping, he says it's important business communities are armed with the tools available such as Facebook and Instagram and know how to use them. “Raglan is the perfect place to be

promoting a business on Facebook and Instagram, because it's such a beautiful town - there's a great post around every corner. The reach of Facebook and Instagram means you can run your business from Raglan and reach customers anywhere in New Zealand or the world.” The #BoostYourTown initiative has been touring the country since May and has taken in towns such as Whanganui, Whangarei, Kerikeri and Hawera, getting businesses excited about using social media

Amanda Chruch with some of the crew from the Dog Pack Walk.

aglan Dog Pack Walk makes R taking the pooch for a walk fun for both humans and canines. Founded by Amanda Church several years ago in order to provide a safe environment for dogs to hang out with their four-legged buddies, she also noticed the humans were getting just as much socialisation.

“It was all about the dogs when I started the walks, I never anticipated how close the humans would get,” she says. Amanda has a zoology degree from Otago University and her main interest has always been in animal/human interaction. “I started Pack Walk just for fun and to meet all the different dogs in Raglan. My

primary goal is to get the dogs out of the house, off chains and leads and having fun.” She says her own dog Ngala taught her so much about managing dog behaviour and also about herself. “She was a real challenge. I read lots about animal behaviour and training and pulled out the bits that worked for Ngala.” The idea that some dogs didn’t get to have interactions with other dogs due to their owner’s concerns about inappropriate behaviour gave Amanda the incentive to provide support and advice garnered from her own successful training of Ngala. “It’s so much fun seeing the dogs playing with each other. Pack Walk provides such a supportive environment if you are having problems with your dog.” Amanda says everyone on the pack walk has had some sort of issue with their dog and there are no judgments passed. “People come and have all these expectations of how their dog will behave in the pack walk. But with good management the dogs adapt very well,” she says. On average around eight dogs do the pack walk, but in the summer months there have been up to 30 dogs. The walk takes the pack across the airfield and heads towards Ngarunui Beach. Amanda says all the owners are conscientious about picking up dog poo and it helps to have more eyes checking out what the dogs are up to. For many, Pack Walk is a family affair with children tagging along and Amanda says it’s great for the younger members of the family to learn how to handle their dogs as well as the adults. Raglan Dog Pack Walk is every Monday and Thursday at 5pm in winter and 5.30pm in summer (after daylight savings) and leaves from the airfield carpark – look for the group of humans and dogs mingling near the entrance. Janine Jackson For more information contact Amanda via the Raglan Dog Pack Walks Facebook page.

Netball fans stand centre court at ANZ Premiership

A

local Raglan netballer got the chance to get up close to the thrilling on-court action at the July 9, ANZ Premiership match, as she stood side by side with Magic captain Samantha Sinclair and Steel captain Wendy Frew in front of a stadium of fans. Winning the ANZ Future Captains competition, ten-year-old Kowhai-Pearl Rumbal, joined by friend Tiari Gibson, also ten, had the opportunity to meet the team captains and lead the teams out onto centre court at the start of the match. Kowhai-Pearl attends Raglan Area School and has been playing netball for three years. She broke her arm at the beginning of the season and is excited to get back into netball. One day she hopes to play for her favourite team, the Magic. “I loved watching how the Magic play and how they strategise. Casey Kopua is

my favourite player because she plays goal defence, which is my position too, and I feel like I can learn a lot from her.” ANZ Head of Sponsorship Sue McGregor says ANZ is passionate about supporting netball at all levels, from the players out there practising every weekend, to top-level athletes in the ANZ Premiership. “That’s why we’re giving 94 children from around New Zealand the chance to be a Future Captain and meet their sporting heroes at each of the ANZ Premiership matches this season. “We’re so pleased we’re able to offer this once in a lifetime opportunity to young Kiwis and hope that offering them the chance to meet their heroes and stand on centre court at the start of the match will help inspire them to keep training hard and achieve their goals.” The match saw the Steel beat the Magic by 76-60 goals.

C Mindfulness at Waitetuna School

Don’t go past Waitetuna when enrolling your child for a local school!

here are numerous new and exciting T initiatives and developments happening at this small country school only 15 minutes Teacher Mariella Brunton is practising mindfullness with students at Waitetuna School.

few weeks ago the A Chronicle was kindly invited to Waitetuna School to learn about their mindfulness programme.

On a Monday morning we sat with the entire school for a mindfulness session that focused on breathing, visualization and gratitude. Mariella Brunton the junior teacher who is passionate about it's benefits facilitated the session. Mariella is so passionate infact that she is applying for sabbatical leave next year to complete intensive mindfulness training in India. After experiencing the exercise we can appreciate that the students would start their week and day feeling both calm and focused. The discussion afterwards had many contributors each wanting to offer what they were grateful for and how they were feeling. Each response was heart warming and testament that the programme was well worth introducing. The Chronicle caught up with Mariella to find out more about the programme and its benefits. When did you implement Mindfulness at Waitetuna School?

We have been consistently practising Mindfulness at Waitetuna since February this year. Why did you decide to introduce it? We decided to start the year with a focus on relationships and friendships; how to practise kindness towards everyone. Mindfulness was a way of celebrating everything we are thankful for, and focussing on the positive. It was such a success in term one, that we decided to continue it as a regular programme. To be able to promote mental health and to increase positive states of wellbeing is so important. If we can offer these tools to primary school students, they will then be better equipped for their transition to high school and beyond. With increasing anxiety, stress, and greater amounts of screen time, it is evident that our tamariki are desperately in need of mindful practice. Mindfulness is a way of being in the ‘here and now’ and developing positive life skills and a focus that helps create confident and resilient children. What benefits have you observed for the students throughout the different stages? It was not until we gave the students ownership of their learning and asked

them to do a presentation (in their chosen format) about what Mindfulness means to them, that we truly realized the benefits of Mindfulness. The teachers and parents were overwhelmed to see what was created. The senior students showed that they use the techniques in their sports and were interested in exploring how professional sports people also practise Mindfulness. Senior and Middle Room students explained how it helps when preparing for testing situations. Mindfulness enables students to calm down and focus on the task at hand and to be confident in their own abilities. The Junior classroom use mindfulness to find peace and focus, and to experience gratitude for things in their lives. In addition, the Junior and Middle Rooms are developing greater balance and flexibility through their yoga sessions. Sports experts who regularly come to work in our school have noticed a change and are interested in this aspect of the children’s learning. We are also thankful to the community for supporting and encouraging this new initiative. Chronicle

from Raglan.

Last term a re-designed staffroom was opened with resonating voices of the children singing waiata. “Staff feel valued and appreciated in this warm and inviting space and we feel proud to show visitors through the school,” says Principal Margery O’Connell. A new initiative this term has been the introduction of After School Care. Offered are a variety of interesting activities like baking, playing games, hut making, crafts and the occasional rainy day movie. Children love it! The Mindfulness programme is nicely linked to our schools health and wellbeing practise and has been introduced school wide to continue to develop confident and resilient children. The school has a very pro-active PTA group, who plan and organise the Waitetuna Windfarm Trail Run. After a highly successful Trail Run in 2017, the school was able to fund sandblasting and re-painting our school pool. Registrations are now open for 2018 and the money raised is to go towards re-surfacing our courts. Please check out the website https://waitetunatrailrun. co.nz/ or facebook page. There is a school van available to transport children from Raglan to Waitetuna School daily. The van is also available for day trips so students can have a wide experience of education outside the classroom. Use of our school van at our small rural school also enables all children to experience everything! Waitetuna School is open for new enrolments so check out our website https://www.waitetunaschool. com/ and Instagram. Ring on 8255827 and feel free to pop in for a visit.

Raglan Vintage & Retro time travels to retirement

Raglan Vintage & Retro owners Sue and Paul Marrow are looking forward to & Retro owners Sue and Paul Marrow are looking retirement,Raglan travelVintage and indulging new interests. forward to retirement, travel and indulging new interests.

R

aglan collectors, renovators and entrepreneurs, Paul and Sue Marrow, are calling full time on their treasure trove shop Raglan Vintage & Retro. Listed with Ray White Raglan, the shop is

up for sale along with all the stock and a very good reputation across the country for retro and vintage furniture and memorabilia. The couple are not about to give up on collecting but retirement beckons and Sue has macular degeneration which will eventually limit her vision - the couple want

time to travel and to indulge some of their other passions. “We will miss this place. We’ve loved it here and could have happily stayed for another couple of years,” Sue says. Located at the Raglan Wharf, the wellloved shop with a spectacular view over the inner harbour is a step back in time to the 50s, 60s and 70s. From lovingly restored retro furniture and snazzy reupholstered chairs and couches, to everybody’s favourite, Crown Lynn china and Temuka pottery, Paul and Sue are passionate about their collectibles and about the memories the pieces evoke. “Collecting is about nostalgia,” she says. “You often collect for what you had, what you didn’t have or what you couldn’t afford,” Paul adds. The couple, who met when they were 16 and celebrate 47 years of blissful wedlock this year, love seeing the smiles as people walk into the shop and recognise something from their childhood. “People always wander around the shop and say – oh, I recognise that from home or from my grandmother’s house,” Sue says. Introduced to collecting by her mother who loved carnival glass, Sue also started collecting the shiny, metallic, pressed glass. She then added Noddy, teddy bears and golliwogs, New Zealand Rail memorabilia, New Zealand pottery and a large amount of Crown Lynn to her collection. Sue has a penchant for upcycling furniture and she sources all the fabric and designs the look of all the couches, chairs and footstools, which are reupholstered in Hamilton. “I love chairs and fabric and I always thought I would like to have a second-hand shop called TLC – tables, lamps and chairs,” she laughs. A former banker, Sue has taken meticulous care of all the bookwork and she has her

finger on the pulse of the shop’s profitability. “The shop has provided us with an income and a stress-free lifestyle for the past five years,” she says. A cabinet maker by trade, Paul also began his collecting journey at a young age – his passion is for toy cars, buses and trains. He utilises his wood crafting skills on restoring the furniture to a very high quality and all the chrome work is lovingly given a new lease of life by Paul. The shop is well-known for a replica Tardis crafted by Paul and the couple say they get a lot of tourists come in just to do a bit of time traveling in Dr Who’s favourite mode of transportation. A large record collection is also Paul’s work and he shares his love of music at Raglan Community Radio where he hosts Friday Freak Zone from 2.30-5pm. In the summer months, the shop is open up to seven days a week to keep up with the demand, but in the off-season they open from Thursday through to Sunday and the couple say they are well-supported by locals and by sales they get through Facebook. The couple have excellent sources for their furniture and collectibles all over the country, and they love getting in their van and travelling far and wide to purchase special pieces for the shop. Just like collecting, restoring and upcycling will always be in the blood and the couple have plans to finally renovate the 1977 caravan that has been sitting neglected in their driveway. “We want to do it up all retro and maybe go to different markets selling smaller pieces,” Sue says. Notice of Meeting - Raglan Community Board

Public Notices *** COMPOSTIBLE T A K E A W A Y C O N TA I N E R S ARE NOW BEING COLLECTED BY XTREME ZERO WASTE *** Collection points can be found at: The Herbal Dispensary, Raglan 4 Square, WoK and Waikato District Council (Raglan Library). Thanks for removing single use plastics from our environment.

On 27 June 2018 Waikato District Council formally adopted its 2018 – 2028 Long Term Plan (LTP). The LTP establishes Council’s infrastructure, key projects, and financial strategies for the next 10 years in line with its liveable, thriving, and connected communities vision. Council approved a 6.24 per cent general rate increase for the 2018/19 financial year, with rate increases expected to drop progressively to between 3.0 per cent and 3.1 per cent in the years from 2022/23 onwards. About half the costs associated with the 6.24 per cent general rates increase are for transport and roading, which will add an extra $1.8m to general rates from 2018/19. Following public consultation Council approved delivery of its water services through a professional Councilappointed Waters Governance Board, and also to reduce the fixed component of general rates (the Uniform Annual General Charge) in order to ease the rating burden on lower value properties in the district. More than 700 submissions on the LTP were received, with 47 submitters also choosing to share their thoughts on the plan with Council at a hearing. For further information or to view a copy of the Council’s Long Term Plan please visit our website www. waikatodistrict.govt.nz or visit one of our Council offices or libraries.

Proposed Gambling Venues Policy 2018 Waikato District Council is seeking feedback on the proposed Gambling Venues Policy 2018.

This policy sets out if and where class 4 venues or standaloneTAB venues may be established in the district. This policy also supports Councils ‘sinking lid’ approach, which is a gradual reduction of class 4 venues and machines in the district over time.

AGM RAGLAN C O M M U N I T Y ARTS COUNCIL 7pm 14th August, Old School Arts Centre. Members and community welcome. For info phone Rodger 825 7443.

Proposed changes to the current policy include: • Measures to strengthen Councils ‘sinking lid’ mandate by increasing controls around mergers and relocations of class 4 venues. For further information, copies of the statement of proposals, proposed bylaws and submission forms – visit www.waikatodistrict.govt.nz or any Council office or library. Have your say by 13 August 2018 Tell us what you think about what we’re proposing. Consultation on the proposed policy will open 11 July 2018. And you can make a submission by:

Lifestyle Block

 

Lot 1 Cornes Road, Te Mata Valleys, Views and All Day Sun Located on a quiet no exit road overlooking green pastures and enjoying rural valley views sits this 9000m2 lifestyle block opportunity. Only 15 mins drive from the conveniences of Raglan township, you would think you are a world away with the peace and tranquillity this area offers. The property has a big view of Mt Karioi, slopes to the north and a small patch of native bush on the boundary adding character. Electricity to be installed at the boundary, although with the all day sun on the building platform it would lend itself nicely to solar energy too. No building covenants. STT.
