COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT: AMY HANNA

Weinterviewed Amy Hanna back in 2016 regarding her community contribution and her interest in photography. Today she continues to actively engage in community events and projects.

Her focus, probably because of parenting her girls, is mainly to do with youth and creativity.

We all decided it would be interesting for Blair her husband to interview their teenage daughters for us to learn about their mum from their perspective, to find out about Amy's life 5 years on and the new life chapter she finds herself in.

They last interviewed your mum in 2016. How has life changed for her since then?

Since 2016, Mum has zigzagged around the local schools and now works at Te Mata School teaching a structured literacy course and running and organising the Te Mata school library. Every time we go out she's always looking for a new haul of kids books despite us being about ten years off their target audience.

How do you think Amy has found the experience of parenting teenage girls?

We’re angels so she's pretty lucky. We're sure it's not always easy at times but we know everything she does is in our best interest and because she loves us, which we are constantly reminded about. Taylor would dispute this slightly with the ‘screen time’ Mum puts on her phone but nevertheless we love her the most.

If you could describe Amy in five words what would they be?

It takes a lot more than five words to describe someone like our Mum but if we had to pick five it would probably be, Gorgeous, Colourful, Passionate, Thoughtful, Mum.

Figuratively speaking your Mum is known to not be on the sideline but instead a real team player. What aspect of the community is she currently involved in and what do you think she is really passionate about?

Well often she is on the sidelinesrain or shine - taking photos of muddy soccer players and circus performances. She loves being a part of the Feed the Kids crew at Raglan Area School and recently she’s been involved with the Youth Collective at the Kopua Domain.

Over the past few years she has also been a big part of the Raglan Theatre Academy not just taking photos but chipping in a little bit of everything including sealing love letters with kisses for one of the Harry Potter professors and painting the faces of Smaug the Dragon! Mum seems to always put most of her passion into what we are passionate about which has been so awesome; having her there as one of our utmost supporters as well as participating in as many ways as possible.

Why do you think your Mum puts her hand up to help out in community events?

Mum has always been one to jampack her schedule (until we’re questioning why she keeps putting her hand up) but we think she does it because she genuinely cares about helping to create and capture the most fun and valuable events in the community. Her connection with the Whaingaroa youth through teaching

also sparks her passion to inspire a new generation as well as us to be creative through filmmaking, art, drama, and music.

Your mum has worked up at Soundsplash for the past few years, which I know you enjoyed. What was it like having her there helping out?

Having Mum at Soundsplash is so helpful because we know she is always there if we or our friends ever need anything, even if it's just a quick phone charge or a bit of support in ‘Deep Space’. We can always spot her with her colourful hair and bright outfits which is even better!

When the Local Rag contacted her last week she was at the hairdresser. In a previous interview she said she 'chooses not a life of imitation'. Tell us if this ongoing self expression has rubbed off on the way you live your lives?

Honestly each time she heads to the hairdressers it's like a lucky dip as to what combination of colours and style she's going to come home with. Mum isn't afraid to be herself and that

is really admirable to us and has rubbed off on us in the best way possible. Trust us, we both have had our own spin at trying out hair colours including a full head of blue hair dye on Cass’s 10th birthday. I think mum's colourful style and ever changing hair colour has had an impact on us because it gives us the confidence to have our own unique style and sense of self. Mum isn’t afraid to be herself which we both really admire and hope to emulate.

What other aspects of Amy's character are you grateful for and might hope to emulate moving forward?

We’re always so grateful for Mum’s talent for organisation and that she always has a plan when we need one. She is the trip organiser and we don’t know where we would be without herprobably just at home - although neither of us fully emulate this, we both hope to… eventually. Although one thing we hope not to copy is her inability to multitask when on facebook. Number one rule, never ask Mum anything when she's on facebook.

KNITTED WITH LOVE & CONSCIOUSNESS

Icame across Milla’s work on Instagram (@yarnmaster666) a few months ago and have been absolutely obsessed with it! Milla specialises in crochet hats- and after being easily influenced to get one myself, I can vouch for their durability and trendiness!

After meeting Milla I can also vouch for the talented creator behind these sustainably knitted accessories! We caught up with her to talk about it. Introduce yourself.

Hi I’m Milla Mäntylä from Finland!

I came to Raglan one and a half years ago with my local boyfriend. I make crochet and knit clothes and accessories!

Now I’ve been making mostly hats but want to expand and create different things.

How did this come about?

I’ve been knitting and crocheting on and off all my life I guess, that’s something Finnish people learn at school too. I started to do it more here during lockdown and I didn't know that many people from here; it was and still is something I love to do just to relax and turn my brain off!

I started to crochet hats for myself and then people actually wanted to buy them! Then I started an Instagram page for them - it’s so cool that someone other than my mom started to follow it!

I wanted to create cool things for people like me, who care about this planet and still want to play with their style without buying new things.

What do you love most about your work?

The best thing about my creations is that everything is made from recycled materials! All the yarn and even the hooks are second hand. I believe you can get super cool things without harming the environment. They are also unique, as I can’t go and buy the same yarn again haha; never know what I can source! Shout out for Xtreme Zero Waste and Lions Op Shop for their crafty selections.

What’s next?

This year I want to slow down more and take care of my garden and crochet under my feijoa tree.

I would like to push out more different accessories and when the winter comes, maybe bigger pieces too. I am keen to do some markets as well and perhaps there’s a shop in Raglan who wants to take my hats in ;)

ARTIST MORPHS FROM MUSIC TO PAINTING

After 20 years of making music and performing worldwide with band Rapture Ruckus, Brad Dring - aka shortydubschanged tack to accommodate his young family and morphed from hip hop music to street-inspired art.

“Music and being in a band was an incredible way for me to learn and scratch my creative itches, whether designing album art, editing music videos or designing gig posters, I got obsessed with learning the tools and getting involved,” he says.

As luck would have it the transition away from music happened in 2018 and Brad moved his family to Whaingaroa in 2019 before the ability to travel easily was put on pause by the pandemic.

“I really wanted my boys to grow up close to the ocean as I did, get them into surfing and be connected to the land. So hence why we chose Raglan.”

Any artist will tell you it’s hard to dampen the creative urge and Brad took up painting, which he could fit around family life.

Describing himself as an urban artist dabbling in street art, pop art and graphic design, Brad's work often samples and reimagines well-known imagery like a King of the Pipeline Gerry Lopez photograph or a Goldie painting.

Using layered stencils, spray paint and motifs, Brad reconceptualises the original.

“A lot of the creative work I was doing, other than the performing and playing instruments, was all very computer-based. I really wanted to find a medium of doing artwork and getting dirty with wood and spray paint, and using my hands and getting it out of the computer.”

While it’s not yet bringing Brad the acclaim he found with Rapture Ruckus, he is selling a few pieces online

through his Instagram page @shortydubs, and more importantly he is filling his creative bucket.

“I'm really just doing it for me at the moment and putting some stuff up online, and I’ve sold some work over the Internet.”

Rapture Ruckus first made waves in New Zealand in the early 2000s and in 2004 they headlined Parachute, a music festival held at Mystery Creek and, in their debut performance, broke the festival record for highest-selling debut act.

After winning a New Zealand Music Award (Tui) in 2007 for their debut release, ‘I Believe’, and reaching the Top of the NZ album charts in 2009 with their live CD/ DVD, ‘Live at Worlds End’, they caught the eye of Seattle based record label BEC/Tooth&Nail and signed a deal later that year.

In 2010, Brad, his wife Mel and the other members of Rapture Ruckus relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, before hitting the gruelling touring circuit in the US and beyond.

Their 2015 album 'Invader' debuted at number 1 on the US Billboard Christian/Gospel Album Chart and reached number 57 on the overall US Top Albums Chart.

“Between 2010 -2018 we were on the road about 200 days a year performing 100 plus shows each year across the US and other parts of the world.”

Brad and Mel had their first son Roman in 2013 and Lincoln followed in 2015, and the young boys joined their parents on the road.

“We brought a tour bus in the US so the whole family could travel together. Having our family together has always been a high priority, so we converted bus bunks into baby cribs and just figured it out as we went along.”

Prioritising family and a yearning to return home to raise the boys, Brad and Mel decided to return to Aotearoa in 2018.

“As part of a plan to transition back to New Zealand and away from the extensive touring, I reconnected with friends at Fiasco Cases, a Kiwi company in the Waikato that also had an operation in Torrance, California, and became their creative director,” he says.

“In 2020, with Covid, the world's events industry went into a tailspin, and we knew we had to pivot quickly if we wanted to survive. We put our heads together to think of ways we could produce products using our CNC machines and a supply of premium birch plywood, and Work From Home Desks was born. Within one week we were up and running, and had made our first online sale in New Zealand. The following week we made our first sale in the US, and we were off.”

Now, Brad says, with the events industry back up and running, Fiasco is back at full steam as well.

Being back in New Zealand also meant Rapture Ruckus could have their swansong where it all started for them and they took to the stage for the very last time to a sold-out festival audience in January 2020, a few short months before lockdown would have made it impossible.

“It’s been a big change, and though life now has a different pace and flow, I'm still very much an artist at my core and in my soul, and finding new ways to create and express new ideas will never stop,” he says.

“Painting has been a godsend and I feel very blessed to be living in this incredible community of Raglan, connected to nature and so many other creative people doing cool stuff.”

The born-and-bred Wellingtonian also manages to fit in music and surfing, on top of family, work and painting.

“When I’m not working or painting, you’ll find me surfing out on the Points or pushing my boys into waves down at the beach.”

He also loves working with up-and-coming young musos and artists as a mentor, sharing his journey and wealth of creative experiences.

Join Brad Dring at Artist Talks on Thursday 23 February at 6.30pm at the Old School Arts Centre.

REHABILITATING NATIVE BIRDS

Kylie Martin is a local native bird rehabilitator for sick, injured or orphaned native birds. Having just received her Department of Conservation permit for her facilities, she is ready to provide helpful information about what to do if you find a sick, injured or orphaned bird.

What is your background and what specific skills do you have?

I have been veterinary nursing in zoo hospitals and veterinary clinics in both New Zealand and abroad for 20+ years. I have cared for a huge range of endangered and protected species but always had a special interest in our native birds. So, I actively sought out wildlife hospitals where I could gain the skills I needed to give our avian species the best possible care.

What inspired you to become a rehabilitator?

The inspiration started about 10 years ago chatting with like-minded colleagues about the need for more bird rehabbers in our area. Currently there are only a few people in the Waikato area with Department of Conservation permits to capture and rehabilitate native birds. The timing wasn’t right back then but it has now happened, and I am looking forward to it.

What have you set up near Raglan?

My facilities include a dedicated bird hospital equipped with incubators and speciality equipment to feed and care for sick, injured, or orphaned birds.

Adjacent to the hospital are two large pre-release aviaries where

birds can gain their fitness back and exercise their flight muscles after their stay in hospital.

We are based in a quiet rural location to minimise the stress the birds may experience.

My sole focus is on native species such as Morepork / Rūrū, Tūī, Kererū, Sacred Kingfisher / Kōtare, Little Blue Penguins / Kororā, Terns, Petrels and Wading birds.

What advice do you have about what to do if you find a sick, injured, or orphaned bird?

Firstly, and most importantly, observe the bird from a distance. And assess the situation.

During spring it is common for fledglings (young birds) to be seen hopping around on the ground. Mum and dad are most likely around feeding them until they are able to fly. So please take a moment and think before you pick them up. If there is a threat of a predator, such as a dog or cat, you may be able to provide a safe area where the bird can find shelter.

Signs that a bird may need your help:

They look fluffed up, there is visible blood, or you have seen it being attacked, they have missing or dishevelled feathers, it is having trouble breathing, it is wet (birds feathers repel water), or its eyes are closed.

Before you capture a wild bird, it is a best to call 0800 DOC HOT, a local wildlife rehabilitator such as myself, or your local vet clinic for some advice. You may cause more harm than good by capturing the bird.

A list of rehabilitators can be found on www.wrennz.org.nz/ or if you are local call me on 021 107 3759.

USHER CUP - WORLD CLUB SURF CHALLENGE

After winning the Boardriders Club Championships last year, the Point Boardriders have recently returned from Usher Cup - a three-day event that included the best male and female surfers from 23 board rider clubs.

The Usher Cup is a recently-developed club event held at Snapper Rocks on the Gold Coast of Australia. 2023 marks the first year that the event was international with six countries attending as well as 23 clubs from Australia. The event took place on the 19th – 22nd January and accommodated teams of four from each club in a standard surfing format for males and females with $7,000 going to the winners of each division. Other countries attending included France, Indonesia, Japan, Hawaii and USA.

Jacqui from the Local Rag caught up with Caleb Cutmore who achieved an impressive 7th placing at the international event.

You achieved a very impressive 7th place result, the highest of all the international competitors. Tell us about the recent comp experience.

Yeah I was stoked to make it as far as I did in the competition. It was pretty evident once we got over to the contest that there was a really high level of surfing. I knew that I would have to surf well even to make it through the first round of competition. I enjoy surfing in competitions like this though. There were a few big names and I had nothing to lose, so I just made sure I got two good waves in each heat. I've struggled in the past having confidence when surfing overseas, but having

the point boardriders team in my corner I felt pretty at home and this helped with the way I surfed.

When and where did you first start surfing? Was surfing in the family?

I think I first surfed at Mount Maunganui on a family holiday. My Dad enjoys surfing, as well as my uncle and cousin (Geoff and Taylor Hutchison). So naturally surfing was a part of my life growing up.

What have been some of the highlights of your surfing career so far?

Over the years I have been fortunate enough to represent the country a few times in international events, so it’s opened up a few opportunities to travel. I think surfing can also encourage quite a healthy lifestyle and it has brought me some quality friendships over the years so I'm pretty thankful for that.

Who do you look to for advice or inspiration within the surfing community ?

Growing up surfing around Raglan there were a few guys that looked out for me when I was younger and had time for me. I think those people inspire me a lot. I also went to the surf academy at Raglan area school, where Larry Fisher and Deane Hishon played roles as mentors in my life. I have continued to keep pretty regular contact with both of them too.

What does life look like in 2023 for you? Are you still at Uni? How do you combine study with getting enough time on the water?

I finished studying at Waikato Uni at the end of last year. I will most likely look at returning in a few years time to complete a postgraduate teaching diploma, but at the moment I am working at Green Wave Surf School

and picking up odd jobs. I'm hoping to travel this year and expose myself to different waves around the world, and then I’ll look at committing to the world qualifying series in 2024.

What’s in the pipeline for the year with competitions? What do you hope to achieve?

I'm hoping to compete at all the national surfing events through autumn before heading

overseas, and I'll try win the surfing NZ ratings this year.

What would you say to a young boy who would love to pursue competitive surfing ?

I would just say keep having fun. If you truly enjoy surfing for what it is then it will come naturally. I think a lot of parents push their kids pretty heavily down the surfing path, but it’s not sustainable if the enjoyment isn't there.

SERVING TENNIS TO THE COMMUNITY

Suvi

Muotka is the Head Coach and Director of the Hamilton Tennis Academy. Living in Raglan she also offers tennis lesson locally in Raglan and we caught up with Suvi to hear all about the academy.

Tell us about the Raglan based tennis academy you own and run.

Hamilton Tennis Academy is a small tennis business that was established already in 2008 but I took over in winter 2021.

I have a few coaches working for me full time and part time. We run lessons in Hamilton and Raglan from kids (ages 5 and up) to adults..

As I am based in Raglan, I would like to grow the business more in Raglan and hopefully one day have courts here that are playable all year round.

What is your backstory? Where and how did your tennis career begin?

Tennis is a family hobby for us and I have played since I was 5 years old and then started coaching when I was 13.

Since then tennis has been a part of my life with training, competing and coaching. We still play tennis and nowadays also padel with the family when I visit home in Finland.

What attracted you to Raglan ?

I love surfing and Raglan was going to be just a quick surf stop on my travels here. I loved the vibe, the surf and the community so a weekend trip turned into years and changed my life forever.

How did you get involved with coaching in Raglan?

I was looking for some work in Raglan and I was playing a lot of tennis with my friends here. I heard there is a tennis coach in Raglan so I contacted him to see if he needs more coaches and started working for Hamilton Tennis Academy in 2017.

What do you like about your job and what benefits do you see for your clients?

Tennis has always been my passion and I studied to be a math teacher so I also enjoy teaching a lot. I love to see people enjoying tennis, learning something new, improving their skills and the joy that comes with it. It’s amazing to see when kids or adults find a sport they enjoy doing so much it doesn’t even feel like an exercise. Tennis is an amazing sport that you can play from an early age until your older years.

What do you offer Raglan locals in terms of coaching ?

We have group lessons in Raglan in summer seasons (term 4 and 1) for kids from 5 years olds to adults. For adults we offer cardio tennis sessions which is a fun workout class while playing tennis. I also offer private lessons here in Raglan all year round.

How do they get in touch ?

TALKING ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH

it’s made me have that relationship with my mental health. You really have to face some shit head on and it is scary. I think we live in a culture where you want to put a band aid on things and change the mood and just be happy. I had a really cool chat with some friends a few weeks ago about sitting in uncomfortable emotions and that was quite a moment for me. I think to deal with that deep rooted stuff you’ve got to sit in that uncomfortable time. I always think of other people, I don't want to bring anyone's vibe down, but actually sitting and dealing with the uncomfortable emotions has been a gem. It helps you process them and deal with them.

How have you refined your boundaries and found the balance between people pleasing and looking after yourself?

Well yes, I was very much a yes person, yes to helping everyone and going out to everything. And I think that’s something that I've definitely addressed. Boundaries have been a big one for me. I read Glennon Doyle’s book Untamed and it really helped me to understand that when you're a people pleaser you have that silly mindset that you're letting people down if you say no but you can’t do it if your tank is empty. You have nothing left for yourself and it feels way better to give when you've got something to give, it's a reciprocal energy. You gotta fill your tank first.

What has your past relationship with your mental health been like in your formative years?

this weird spiral sometimes that people weren't there for me. So I really had to own my shit and find my own language for it. And asking for help has been one of the biggest things because I'm always quite an upbeat person. Being able to say to friends or family, I'm not in a good headspace and I need help has been quite a freeing thing for me. I think sometimes when you're the helper it's hard to be helped. It's been awesome because I have the best people around me. I've got friendships that span years, my childhood best friend is still my bestie and we have amazing dialogue about it. My crew here in Raglan, some of us have been friends for 10-20 years. I feel very blessed and really safe and I've grown by having those same people in my life to have those conversations with. In the last few years I've actually weeded out a few friendships, I don't need 100 million friends, I just need a few good ones.

What are some of the lessons that you've learned that you think might be helpful to other people or that have been helpful to you?

Being kind to people and having a sense of faith. My granddad always told me to have faith, no matter what your faith is, just believe in something bigger. And having a sense of humour gets you through things, because I think that it can soften the edgy moments of life. Also not being afraid to let go of things or leave jobs or relationships that aren't serving you. Knowing what to fight for and what to let go of.

In this month's mental health chat, Ruby speaks to Jo Sweeney.

What is your relationship like with your mental health? And is it something that you're considering daily?

It's funny because I guess I'm trying to be more open with this stuff. I did have a really bad dip when I came out of a long term relationship four years ago. That was

a moment that made me put things into place and really address how I manage my mental health.

Do you think that was a turning point in how you help yourself?

Yeah, when a big life event like that happens, it makes all that stuff come to the top. Also being on my own in lockdown really bubbled things to the surface. I think it was actually quite beautiful because

I think I definitely had little dips then, it's something I actually talked about with my school friends recently. I'm 41 now and mental health wasn't really talked about when we were younger. I was just a normal teenager, but I definitely had dips that I think just weren't talked about. Friends would be concerned about it, like why are you sad? It's just like, I don't know! I always get a bit funny about those buzzwords like burnout. But when you are a yes person, it’s so easy to burn out! And so I think now that we've got more words, we've got language to put on our feelings. I find it really different and quite healthy.

When you've been at your lowest point, what was it that kept you going?

A thing that has really helped push me through was owning my shit. Especially as someone who lives on my own. I had

Finally, what are some of the tools in your toolbox?

Having my safe people around me and putting strategies into place. I think it comes down to quite simple stuff. I think of myself like a child where I need rest, food, shelter. My basic needs need to be met. Music is a big one for me, I’m often finding songs that can help me portray a feeling that I can't verbalise. Time in nature helps me realise that things come and go, there's movement, you're not stuck in this. The rain comes then the sun comes out, the tide goes in, the tide goes out. And having a dance and a bit of fun and silliness! Also, living in a community means everything to me. I have lived in cities, but living in a community like this is so special where it's quite common to even talk about mental health at the checkout!

REIKI RUAWAI SOLO TOUR KICKS OFF IN WHAINGAROA

SOLO SHOW AT THE YARD, RAGLAN

Raglan’s

Reiki Ruawai is set to kick off his solo tour this Thursday at The Yard, debuting newly produced music that he’s been brewing up in the studio. Reiki is also known as the frontman of local band, Masaya, but will be showcasing his solo sound; a new generation of heavy R&B with ‘filthy kick and bass,’ during his mini-tour this Waitangi weekend.

With a couple of self-produced bangers already under his belt, including his laid-back debut single ‘Miller,’ - a summer surf anthem - and ‘Express,’ (a song that was written as a reflection on mental health among youth in Aotearoa) you can expect to hear some of these solo releases as well as new tracks during his upcoming shows.

Surrounded by musical influences from a young age and having picked up the guitar at the tender age of six, it’s safe to say that music runs through Reiki’s veins. In 2010, at age 10, he toured around Europe alongside his parents’ band, Cornerstone Roots, polishing his performances by being “thrown in the deep end at a young age.”

Reiki has recently been handpicked to be part of SongHubs UK/ Tāmaki Makaurau - a series of intensive songwriting camps bringing together APRA AMCOS (Australasian Performing Right Association Limited, Australasian Mechanical Copyright Owners Society) members and renowned international songwriters and producers to create new hits.

Singer-songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist, Jordan Rakei, has selected this recent group of musicians to be part of SongHubs UK 2023. Reiki is set to join Muroki and 13 other artists to participate in the songwriting residency, which provides unique collaborative opportunities for both published and unpublished songwriters and composers, irrespective of genre.

Although Reiki has recently relocated to Auckland to pursue his music career he remains connected to Raglan through his parents, Brian and Naomi, who run local music café and venue, The Yard.

RAGLAN OLD SCHOOL ARTS CENTRE SHOWS THIS FEBRUARY

Old School Arts Centre has two fabulous concerts plus stand-up comedy shows in February.

Raglan

On Fri 3rd and Sat 4th Feb Banana Jolie returns to the Old School Arts Centre. Her previous shows here have sold out, so be in quick to get your tickets for “Standing Still”.

As a former dancer and aerobics instructor, her shows are usually very high energy and physical. In a desperate move to 'do less' and 'be more' in 2023, she has created a stand-up comedy show where she will stand (mostly) still. She will still be busting out some moves at key points in the show though!

“Standing Still” examines and shines light on the human experience. Material ranges from being a mature age student, the history of dust, idioms rewritten, how to not smoke and have clean habits, meditation to tidying up, therapy and sibling dynamics.

Friday Feb 3, 7:30pm doors 7pm

Saturday Feb 4, 3:00pm, doors 2.30pm and 7:30pm, doors 7pm

A week later the Old School hosts a unique concert of folk/classical music from Italy. Making their Aotearoa debut, Ensemble Sangineto are touring New Zealand this summer.

Ensemble Sangineto feature harp and bowed psaltery with three voice polyphonic harmony. They skilfully blend ancient harmonies and

sonorities with modern rhythms. The wideranging musical experiences of the individual members converge to create fresh arrangements of traditional Italian, Breton & Celtic tunes and original compositions that display influences from classical to folk, from Gregorian chant to pop.

Thurs Feb 9 7.30, doors 7pm

Tickets from Under The Radar

Live & Local - our popular series of showcases for local performers - is back after a short summer break. Feb features poet Celestial Festival, local songwriter Joe Wilson and guitarist Reinis Jaunais.

Joe Wilson spent five years as a busker travelling New Zealand, Australia and the UK. He has always just tried to write ‘simple good songs’ that speak to people in ways that are honest and easy to digest, nothing complicated or fancy.

Reinis Jaunais, a musician from Riga, Latvia, describes his music as travel experiences painted with sounds. Reinis has been performing all over the world sharing his exceptional guitar skills and unique songs. His music combines distinctive guitar playing techniques, including fingerstyle, tapping, percussive, and live looping. Reinis has played over 200 concerts a year recently and has toured all around Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

RAGLAN SURF EMPORIUM CELEBRATES 10 YEARS

Jordan Bastian, an aspiring writer, with a passion for lifestyle writing, is a newbie to Raglan for the summer and potentially longer. With a part time job at Raglan Surf Emporium she is well placed to interview owners Mel and JC as they celebrate their 10 year anniversary.

Located in the heart of Raglan, Raglan Surf Emporium is a family-run, community-based surf wonderland. With everything from surf essentials, like leashes and ding-repair kits, to the latest trends in surf fashion, the emporium reigns true to its name. But the shop's real treasure is its genuine customer service.

Walk in for a quick shop, and you can find owners Melissa and John Clapham working the floor, creating a homey feel - a quality they have valued for ages. While it may only be one shop, it has been creating smiles and good times since its early days.

So, how did this small-town shop gain such a notable reputation?

After sitting down with Mel, as the locals call her, I heard the story of RSE, from its humble beginnings to the established national brand it is today. It could be argued that it began with a love story, but that’s too cheesy. So, instead, it was when a retail genius met a surfing businessman. At the time, Mel was a brand manager for Burton Snowboards, and JC, CEO of Volcom's Australian and NZ branch; now that's some crazy bragging rights. The duo, while prosperous individually, began making new strides as a team. From heading influential projects in the surf/snow industry to starting a family, these two were building a dream lifestyle.

After years of succeeding within the corporate world, the power couple, now with the addition of their two boys, Kai and Tana, craved a life that flourished at a

slower pace, prompting a trip to the North Shore of Hawaii. JC and Mel immediately fell in love with the relaxed atmosphere, and a light bulb went off in their heads.

"We got our own sort of Hawaii right here," Mel says gesturing out to Raglan harbour from the local Food Department deck. As we sip our coffees, she dives into the reason for their triumphant return to this worldclass surf destination.

JC is the one with Kiwi roots; having grown up in Auckland and Wellington, he spent most of his youth chasing surf comps up and down the country. However, once he hit Raglan, a sense of belonging and excitement ensued; he knew he had to return one day.

With the help of Mel, some friends, and heaps of retail and surf-industry experience, this dream finally came to fruition when the family moved from Sydney to Raglan in 2011. But the idea of RSE was more of a distant reality than a deciding factor.

"It sort of just evolved," jokes Mel.

Upon arrival, the two had hands in the then business GAG, with Tony Bruce, or TB, co-founder of local favourite Raglan Roast. With leading-industry ties blended with a passion for ocean and skate, GAG showcased this friendship's ultimate surf collection, sharing their favourite products with locals, while building the “Volcom Lane.” As more brands decorated the lane, like RUCA and Element, the shop was becoming a central hub, but still something was missing; the perfect name.

"People wanted Raglan product," says Mel, as she explains their process for choosing the new title, knowing it had to showcase the town’s name for starters. The next part was making it unique, and considering the shop's encompassing collection of products, the word emporium came to mind. Thus, RSE was born, and what

followed was a decade of booming business, growing brands, and inclusivity above all else.

Of course, changes have been made since then, with the more drastic ones taking place only within the last five years. From multiple locations including the main shop on the lane, brand pop-ups, and a sales shop down the alley, JC and Mel were plenty busy. As success reigned, soon even Ripcurl wanted in on the action, opening an additional shop with the Clapham clan.

But it wasn’t until 2018 that RSE found its rightful home on Wainui Road, where all operations and staff finally came together under one roof. While the move was a big one, not to mention the timing of COVID, the new location was a perfect fit and the business has been sailing smooth ever since.

Mel and JC continue to funnel love and dedication into RSE, ensuring their community is well recognized and appreciated. With many brands under their belt, the shop proudly sponsors the Raglan Junior Rugby Club, and various local surfers, featuring Navryn and Chris Malone, Kora Cooper, Brie Bennett, Maya Mateja, and their son, Tana Clapham (who also runs the shop’s socials; talk about a power family). "We are a team," Mel states, describing the nature of not just her family but the entire RSE staff.

Down to our last drop of coffee, I ask Mel how she would best describe the store’s overall mission. She responds, "I just want our customers to have a good time;" a trait in my opinion they have not only met but completely blown out of the park.

As the shop celebrates its 10th anniversary, RSE’s lasting history of community values, expertise, and down-to-earth mentality continue to prove its essential uniqueness. Built by a family for the families of Raglan, the Emporium will have you coming back for more, again and again.

WhenI entered room two, the space was clinical, lacking relics or decoration. A stationary bike was in the middle of it all and Trevor sat quietly on his chair staring out the window, a bright midday light pouring on his resting face. Through my squinting eyes, the first thing I noticed on him was his enormous dazzling watch. It was of importance in such a bare room, like an ostentatious symbol that made you stare and think he was a devotee of the clock.

Brought up on a farm in Opunake, he followed his father’s steps amongst cows and early sun rise labours on dairy farms right after high school. By the age of 22, he got badly hit by a bull which vandalised his insides and he suffered an important loss of blood for over 2 years. His entrails were seriously affected: the chance of having children dwindled, his right ribs were shards of bones, repetitive bladder infections were deflating his mood and motivation, and his shoulders were just as wrecked as everything else. What bothered him most was his inability

to drive. A foot on the pedal with windows down was a remedy to clear his mind, a quiet road to remember the power of the wind that led to the volcanic black sand beach and natural rock pools.

As soon as he was able again to push the key and hear the engine without the ancient screams of an aching body, he fed his desire to the fullest. Wanting to chase back the wasted years, he bought a new car and stuck a taxi label on it, and his first business was born just like that. Not limited to his own vehicle, he also drove ambulances.

Hitherto, he still remembers at least 200 cases of heart attacks unfolding urgently right behind his back. It was hard to keep his focus forward when hearing life and death battling behind him. The racing hearts only turned out to beat again, one after the other. Death felt uncomfortably close at times but it never happened in his truck; a halo must have been flying upon the boxy yellow thing. After 2 years of holding his breath while praying for the ones laying in a litter, he opted for a less dramatic environment with NZ Couriers for the 15 years that followed.

His life was spent in mileage. Millions of miles, he claimed. 600 kilometres from Opunake to Auckland and back was a normal day of work. Sometimes even 900 kilometres a day. He favoured the night drives with highways as empty as a cemetery after dusk. His headlights smoothly glided on

the gravel like quiet lanterns held in an inhabited city. The silence grew nicely on him and he felt at peace with the quietness of the world around him.

In the '70s, he moved to Hamilton and continued working long hours as a courier driver. His day started at 4pm on the high seat of his work truck: he would get to Auckland depot, pick up packages, head to the airport and load an airplane that went to Wellington and another that went to Christchurch. The route was done in reverse only for him to switch to his personal station wagon and deliver databank documents in the night ranging from blood samples, to parliament documents and private documents. 160 keys weighted on a steel ring and 40 key cards were nicely packed in his bag to access all sorts of private buildings.

If he got 6 hours of sleep he was lucky; 4 hours a day was normal. He admitted never taking any vacations in his life. It was all about results, beating the clock and making money. The goal was to buy a big farm, which he did eventually - 90 acres close to Waitetuna river with about 100 cows, goats and bulls.

Every day after coming back home from a day on the road he’d tell himself: I made it tonight, I'm still alive after 600km, and that was a result in itself.

UPDATE FROM THE RAGLAN GROWERS MARKET

The first bit of glorious news we have to share is the market is always on! We have had enquiries recently about whether the market is on in wet weather, and thanks to Nigel, we say, “YES,” because we move to inside the hall when the weather goes wonky.

Which brings us on to our second notice, which is a great big THANK YOU to Nigel the pastor at the Raglan Congregational Church on Stewart Street. He has been so welcoming to all of us at WEC and to all of the growers, and the public that come to support this mahi and this kaupapa. With such unpredictable weather this season, the church hall access has meant we can go ahead whatever the weather; this brings certainty and routine for all of us, a big sigh of relief.

And to finish up, we want to encourage MORE growers and MORE kai, in celebration of a resilient and flourishing Whāingaroa. So please, if you want to know more email Tania food@whaingaroa.org.nz and Tania can introduce you to The Growers Network and Grower’s Gatherings. It’s a cool group of people who share skills, knowledge, go on field trips, and give support to one another. Feeling Hungry? Here is one of Katie’s

This bean burger recipe is a great one for using garden glut, it scratches the junk-food itch, and showcases a number of sustainable-kitchen tricks

First preheat oven to 180.

Take two tins of canned beans (or ready to cook beans of your choice). This batch is chickpea & kidney. Generously season with paprika, chilli, rosemary, garlic, soy, honey/sugar and roast for 15mins.

In the same oven, at the same time, take another tray (or two!) of very finely diced veggies – grab a bargain at the Raglan Growers Market (zucchini, carrot, tomato, pumpkin, beetroot, brassica stalks – they all work in this recipe!) Season the same as above and roast for 20mins.

TOP TIP: do not salt the veggies until AFTER they come out of the oven.

Let it all cool down slightly whilst you chop one white onion very finely. Then find a big bowl, start to blitz the onion, veggie mix, and bean mix in a blender. It will likely take you 2-3 batches of blender time.

If you need a binding ingredient plonk a dollop of sourdough starter in the mix or add some corn flour/water paste.

You will have a slightly sticky, but malleable bean dough and it should taste yummy at this stage, so try it, and if it’s not yummy season it. Don’t be a tight with veggie food.

Then let’s make some magic happen. Get a frying pan going with a little oil for a shallow fry (I’m using SWOP shop Rice Bran with this batch). Coat your patties in sourdough starter (quite watered down), then dip them in breadcrumbs (made yourself in a blender with stale bread).

Fry the amount you need for your whānau that day, and bake in the oven to keep warm while you make five million exotic salads –or pour yourself a wine :p

You can make the patties including the crumb, and refrigerate or freeze.

FREEDOM2FLY END OF YEAR SHOWCASE

Jacqui from the Local Rag caught up with Jessica Ramirez from Freedom2Fly to hear about their 2022 showcase - held at the end of last year.

Tell us about the end of year showcase and how it all came together.

Our end of year student showcase was a wonderful opportunity for our students to show off their amazing skills they had been building over the past year with us. This year’s theme, “SHOWTIME” was more like a cabaret style which meant each class had their own theme and style, which was fun and exciting as students didn’t necessarily know what others were doing either. There ended up being three sold out performances which definitely could have been four shows.

Everyone who signs up for term 4 is part of creating something new - something that has never been performed, either a dance/acro choreography or aerial routine. Students experience first-hand exactly what it takes to prepare for and be a part of a major performance. Team work, discipline and dedication are vital skills that grow throughout the process.

What was special about the end of year show?

The show was a special time for our community to come together to celebrate how we love to move and express ourselves. Professionals and amateurs alike united to create unique next-level performances that blew everyone’s' minds. All involved felt the euphoric magic of being a part of something greater than themselves. There really is nothing like the excitement of being in a show and the buzz of performing live for friends and family. With mixed levels, abilities and genres all hanging out together, the show was comprised of Ballet, Jazz, Acro, Circus and Aerials. Students were inspired by inspiring each other and we had positive feedback from parents who said the big kids were helping the little ones and that their children not only learnt skills to perform but built confidence and learnt what hard work and good values can lead to.

It obviously takes a lot of hard work and dedication Jess. What is the lead up like?

A performance has so many different facets that come together to make it work, meaning months of careful planning and preparation to ensure a show's success.

This includes organizing class choreography and setting music and costumes for approximately 150

performers. There is also a lot that happens behind the scenes, from backstage logistics to things like setting up ticketing. Every tiny detail needs to work for the whole performance to work for both performers and the audience.

Who would you like to give thanks to?

It literally takes a village to create and host a show of this scale. We would like to say a massive thanks to EVERYONE who made it possible. There were so many people who helped to make the F2F SHOWTIME show a success including but not limited to:

Student teachers Rita Gomez and Olivia Gausted and teachers Martina and Evelyn; we couldn’t have done it without you. Parent helpers, who helped set up gazebos, do ticketing, volunteers, backstage help, Costuming, Set up, clean up. Lighting and sound - Mel Dring and Graham Hill. Videographer Ray Diprose (who also helped make Jess’s ideas come to life) and Photographer Amy Hanna. 2022 Sponsors- Ozone, Raglan Chocolate, Raglan Food Co, Seed Pilates, SWOP, The Monster Company. All local legendary companies who supported us when we know times are tough; they dug deep and were incredible! Adam Parker from Parkerkraft (and his amazing family) who came to give a fresh new life to the hall bathrooms the weekend before the performances, for our community to enjoy. Evelyn, Nick, Holly, Martina and Val who all helped in HUGE WAYS; we are just so lucky and grateful to have you all as a part of team F2F. Linda Judge, Jess’s mum who ALWAYS steps in to help their dreams flourish by looking after their kids whilst they’re off performing or creating shows/teaching AND Jess’s Bestie Kylie Dyet who is always ready to muck in and do whatever needs to be done including talking her down when she gets "frazzled". There’s so many more - you know who you are, we love you and we thank you.

You have had great success with dance exams too. How did your dancers perform ?

It’s only the second year that students from Freedom2fly have sat dance exams and everyone (ballet AND jazz dancers) passed with ‘flying colours’. It was so wonderful to see the amazing results come in as everyone had worked so hard throughout 2022. We cannot wait to see what this year’s exams bring!

How do people get in touch if they want to join up?

There are some rural views and with many of the surrounding sections now complete with new homes it is easier to see how your new home might fit this situation. The section size is 415m2. There has been a geotechnical report done on the site in preparation for a transportable home.
