Several weeks after the Raglan Chronicle’s website www.raglanchronicle.co.nz was hacked and all the files needed to keep the site up and running were lost, the paper is back with a new online presence.

You can now find the latest edition of the Chronicle on the home page of www.raglan. net.nz. The new format allows readers to scroll through the pages in much the same way as flicking through a hardcopy of the paper. Previously readers who wished to read an online copy of the paper had to download the file. In order to keep downloads at a small size, images from the paper had to be compressed and this meant quality was lost. With the new format there is no need to compress images.

Tender prices hold key to new Raglan museum

architecturally designed residences & renovations

James Parrott p 07 854 5526 m 0272 559 537 e evolvearch@xtra.co.nz

Raglan’s long-awaited new museum on prime waterfront land in Wainui Road has moved closer to reality with the first of the two-step tender process completed and Waikato District Council this week looking at the crunch issue – price.

Conceptual drawing of the new museum and information centre on Wainui Rd. The loss of an estimated $100,000 of funding previously agreed by the trust comes less than three months after the Raglan and District Museum Society urged the council to “bite the bullet” and get on with the project. It warned building costs were rising and that timesensitive funding had lapsed and would have to be reapplied for. The society insisted it had finance all arranged in 2008, the year after resource consent was approved, but accused the council of dithering trying to find a “zero risk” situation after being handed a little over a year ago the job of finally bringing the project to fruition. Drawings for the two-storey museum were finalised early last year after the building was

scaled back to fit the project’s budget. While a café that was to open out on to Kopua inlet got the chop, the society says the complex will still be substantial enough. Key features are a reading and education room looking out to sea, an open auditorium area on entry, a mezzanine floor, a relocated info centre and internal rooms for the exhibits themselves. Facilities of that sort are a far cry from the cramped current museum building – originally Raglan’s fire station – which is set to be demolished along with the public toilets bordering Joyce Petchell Park. Award for retro home comes as big surprise Longtime Raglan residents Katherine and Jeremy Hughes had no idea until recently that their retro-style Greenslade Road home overlooking Lorenzen Bay was up for a regional architecture award for designers from the lower North Island. But it was an even bigger shock to discover their threebedroom home had actually won the Architectural Designers NZ award – in the residential new home up to 250 square metres category – and will now go on to compete at the national awards in Nelson in October. It was a complete surprise, says Kath. “We didn’t even know it (the design) was in a competition.”

The couple only found out the good news late last month in an email from Kath’s brother Chris Shaw, who works for Gisbornebased Pacific Modern Architecture. He’d entered his design from a decade ago and hadn’t even gone to the awards dinner down-country in Paraparaumu, not knowing he was a regional winner. Chris was pretty pleased about it all the same, says Kath, although according to his wife very quiet and laidback “like any Shaw”. The Hughes, who moved into the house six years ago, agree that Chris did a great job of designing them a very liveable family home which shows off to best advantage its sea view – with a glimpse of the wharf – in between the surrounding trees. “We love it here,” they say. “Chris knows our style,” adds Kath who’s into the ‘50s and ‘60s look with its pedestal chairs and vinyl couch – splashes of the era’s trademark orange and green cushions roundabout. It’s a single level, L-shaped, three-bedroom

home of just 140 square metres with floor-to-ceiling glass windows and doors a feature of its simple openplan living space. Because of its “orientation to the sun”, says Kath, it’s a very warm house and thanks to cork floors easily maintained despite the couple’s brood of four kids – including twins – aged from four to seven. Kath reckons that from the kitchen and large living space she can see the kids out on the trampoline in front of the house, and on their home-built skateramp to one side. The hallway bedrooms also capture the sun and light, she says – theirs at the end because, like the living space, it’s framed by lots of glass; and the children’s in the middle because of three-quarter high hallway walls that let the light in from high hall windows opposite. Chris believes the design has been judged on its overall composition including how it’s “orientated for the sun and how it works as a family home”. The Hughes are moving on soon to a similarly-designed home by Chris, on a four-and-a-half acre section with “mostly covenanted

bush”, says Kath, in which the children love to play. And they’ll have an ocean view not far from where the couple like to surf at Manu Bay. Edith Symes

With the non-price portion of the three tenders received for the expected million-dollar project out of the way, the council has turned its attention to how much the construction companies say they can build the museum for. “This (the price portion of the tenders) is expected to be evaluated this week,” council water & facilities manager Richard Bax told the Chronicle. The next step, he said, would be for council staff to prepare a report recommending to chief executive Gavin Ion the preferred bidder and how the project would be funded. Raglan and District Museum Society president Pat Day said he understood none of the three tenderers was from Raglan. Mr Bax revealed the council had been unsuccessful in trying to get funding from the St Lazarus Trust and that other options might need to be considered. “But this will depend on the tender price,” he said.

Win tickets to comedy show at Orca Mayor Tim Shadbolt and loyal sidekick Gary McCormick are bringing their comedy show A Barrel of Laughs to Orca on Friday 13 August.

Gary, co-host of the MORE FM breakfast show in Christchurch and Mayor Tim have played over 80 shows around New Zealand in the last three years. The pair say they specialise in playing local community venues. “The people who come along are very friendly and as performers we can have a

lot of fun with them, says Gary.

Mayor Tim and Gary come from the tradition of comedy being a storytelling and user-friendly art form. “We’re a little over the full-on swearing thing which seems to be popular in comedy these days, says McCormick. “We like comedy to be fun and about New Zealand. “A sense of humour is the key to everything, especially in these difficult economic times. That’s why we are on the road now! says Mayor Tim.

Q: A:

Over the next few weeks there will be some earthworks happening at Te Uku Church as Meridian Energy develop a viewing area for the wind farm. Because of the heavy machinery on site we have decided to move Mainly Music to the Te Uku Hall for the next 2-3 weeks from Monday 9th August. Once the work is completed we will be enjoying a bigger parking area and safer entrance way as Meridian are also widening the road. Other church activities in the weekends or evenings will not be affected. The Food Bank continues to be very busy as the affects of the recession continue to bite into family budgets. Thanks to the ongoing support of so many in our community, we are keeping up with demand, but only just! A special thank you for recent donations from Raglan Lions Club, Catholic Care Foundation and Ray Whites. Also don’t forget the donation box at the Video Shop and food basket at the Supermarket.

Does a small community like Raglan really need a Chamber of Commerce? Well, we believe it does! Commerce is essential to any community. Businesses obviously provide jobs for locals who in turn put money back into the community. Many businesses also use other local enterprises to supply them with the items they need to operate or they may outsource work to locals. Businesses continue to provide sponsorship for non-profit neighbourhood organisations. The Chamber promotes and supports Raglan businesses to be more successful so the whole community prospers. We’re involving the community to promote the community. What about those businesses that consist of only one person? We welcome all people in business or those thinking of going into business as well as community organisations. Often people who work on their own benefit most from the support and networking opportunities offered by the Chamber. Some businesses may not employ a lot of people but if their business encourages people to come to Raglan, that also benefits the community.

Events This Month

Youth Group continues to be a highlight of the week for many of the youth in Raglan with a variety of activities, inspiring speakers and discussion on relevant youth topics. One recent improvement for the youth, which is much appreciated, has been the donation and installation of a floodlight at Te Uku by Alpha Electrical so the youth can skate, play basketball and enjoy other activities even on a winters evening. Right now several people in our community are facing serious health issues and as a church we at Surfside are joining with others in our community to pray each day at 6:30pm. Even simply knowing that others care enough to stop and pray uplifts those that are dealing with big challenges. A final thought from Gods Word. Psalm 121:1 Where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the maker of Heaven and Earth. Lets continue to look to Him! Bless you all! Pastor Roger Peart

12 August - 5.15 Raglan Community House - AGM 18 August- 7.30am - Breakfast at Blacksand - Gareth Bellamy is Guest Speaker (preparing submissions to council) 25 August - Guest Speaker evening - Ernie Newman, CEO of the Telecommunication Users Assn (TUANZ). Ernie appears regularly on TV to comment on telecommunication issues. He’ll be talking about how telecommunications and the Internet have changed people’s lives thus far, and the vast opportunities ahead to transform business, education, health and rural living. Not to be missed!

Business Tip of the Month Why having satisfied customers doesn’t help your business. That’s right, recent research shows that customers’ expectations have grown. Customers are not content anymore with “satisfactory service when spending their hard-earned cash. A satisfied customer is just getting what they expect and it’s no longer enough. So, to create loyal, raving fans, think about ways you could surprise and delight your customers on a ongoing basis. Customers who are delighted tell others and word of mouth advertising is an extremely powerful way of getting more raving customers.

Whitebait - it’s that time again The annual whitebait season is underway, with the season extending from 15 August to 30 November in all parts of New Zealand except the West Coast of the South Island. White baiters are reminded that Department of Conservation staff will be patrolling fishing sites to check that people are abiding by the whitebaiting regulations. Offences against the whitebait regulations carry a fine of up to $5000.00, so it is important fishers refresh their memories about the rules and regulations.

Regulations are in place to protect whitebait species and therefore the fishery, so it can be enjoyed by future generations. Whitebait is the young of the native fish inanga, koaro, banded kokopu, giant kokopu and shortjaw kokopu collectively known as galaxiids. All whitebait species spend part of their life cycle in fresh water and part in the sea. Tiny fish hatch in late autumn and are carried along rivers out to sea where they live and grow over the winter. In late winter and early spring whitebait migrate back up rivers and streams, finally settling and growing in bush covered streams and swamps. Compliance patrols by the Department will concentrate on ensuring fishers are abiding by the whitebait regulations, with a particular focus this year on ensuring all fishing equipment complies with the regulations, and that all fishing gear (including screens) is removed at the end of fishing day. White

baiters need to be aware of the rules relating to net size, hours of fishing, where they can fish on the riverbank, and the need for fishers to stay within 10 metres of their set net at all times. OPINION: The worm in the bud - by Ian McKissack Variation 15 to the Waikato District Plan is on the table. Essentially this would extend the possibilities of business development in the central area and authorise light industrial development just east of the city on Highway 23. There is a body of opinion in the town that is opposed to any change and wants Raglan to stay ‘au naturel’. This is a sentimental view and could lead to a town that is a playground for tourists and part time refugees from Auckland and Hamilton. Raglan could lose its heart as a place where people live their lives. There needs to be enough variety of businesses and other occupational • opportunities for a living • town to develop without losing the essence of the • past. •

district plan or variation that opened up the possibility of the Eastgate shopping centre development (corner of Clyde and Grey Streets.) It is extremely doubtful if there is any need for further retail development in that area apart from a supermarket. The possible entry and exit points are already heavily congested traffic areas and it is easy to predict the possible gridlocks ahead.

has done its best to oppose this dubious development, with limited funds, but apparently the internal processes and authorisations within the council bureaucracy have been appropriate.

There really needs to be a stage after this where specific developments in Raglan are presented for public comment instead of being approved behind closed Council doors.

This is the problem with Variation 15 of the W.D.C. District Plan, rational in its essence but what could it lead to?

(Submissions on Variation 15 close on 27 August 2010.)

We offer 20 FREE hours per week for all 3 & 4 year olds!

SERVICE & ADVICE

Looked at from this point of view Variation 15 seems to be a reasonable revision for the future, though there may be dispute on some details.
