Some required a little bit of tuition but were soon into the swing of the game. Teams were selected into triples and the games began. After two games of 8 played by all teams, the winning team was Bob Carter, Ethan Pook and Peter Anderson, closely followed

by June Gibbs, Christian Hansen and Amelie Hanson in second place. Congratulations to you all and well done. There were certainly some very good challenging bowls played, after which we all shared some light refreshments and friendly banter before heading off to prepare for the New Year’s eve parade. Many vowed to come back and play in our roll-ups again on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Please report in by 12.45pm. All the best to our Waipa interclub teams playing this weekend. Happy bowling, Eileen Stephens

Xtreme Zero Waste looking to the future of waste

Some of the changes at XZW include a new building to house Kaahu's Nest.

he team at Xtreme Zero Waste are preparing for the bright future of zero waste one recyclable at a time. There’s been a lot of changes recently, including the Tuesday to Friday kerbside collections and the new build (constructed by XZW team) which has increased the size of Kaahu’s Nest, streamlined the traffic flow and the recyclables drop off point at the Resource Recovery Centre. The build itself was done by XZW staff and Rick says the exercise was a combination of team-building and upskilling the team. Partly these changes are in response to Raglan’s growth and the recent increase in houses, residents, visitors and the future substantial housing developments, Xtreme Zero Waste relationship manager and founding member Rick Thorpe says. But, more importantly it’s about futureproofing XZW for exciting developments in the way the organisation will continue to ethically manage Whaingaroa’s recyclables and waste. “If we do our job well, we won’t be here,” he laughs. “In the meantime, we want to turn a negative into a positive and add value to waste systems, and help people enjoy an income from it (waste management).” The community enterprise has always

had at it’s heart the model of zero waste and Rick says this will continue to be the ultimate goal but the team can’t ignore the mountain of packaging thrust upon consumers by manufacturers. The new recyclable collection point has been designed to fit a container deposit system that Rick believes will be legislated by government in the next few years. New Zealand is one of the few countries that has not introduced container deposit systems, Rick says, which has proven to be the most effective waste collection system worldwide with 70 percent to almost 100 percent of all drink containers returned for recycling. “Envision did a cost-benefit analysis for container deposit systems and found 40,000 jobs would be created around New Zealand. Ninety percent of New Zealand’s mayors want this. Everyone wants this except the packaging companies,” he says. There’s been a lot of public concern about the clamp down of Chinese markets taking the world’s recyclables and global waste management companies using illequipped countries like Malaysia and Vietnam as dumping grounds. But Rick says the writing has been on the wall for many years and New Zealand’s largest waste management companies have buried their head in the sand keeping their eye solely on profit margins. “They knew this was happening. We

should have been setting up recyclable processing and manufacturing in New Zealand years ago.” 189 Collingwood St P.O. Box 1030, Hamilton Xtreme’s recyclable collection and Ph: (07) 838 3883 handling methods mean they are able to Email: murtaghs@xtra.co.nz send most of their recyclables to a variety Web: murtaghs.co.nz of markets mostly within New Zealand. Over 30 years industry experience free service Still, in the current state of commodities markets, Xtreme make a loss on nearly all their recyclables and the organisation fluctuates each year between making a loss, a small profit or breaking even. Fortunately, the not-for-profit and lean business model at Xtreme has enabled them to subsidise these losses from its other areas of income. Recyclable processing and manufacturing is something the Xtreme team is keen to provide locally and the long-term goal is to set up a recyclable processing and manufacturing system on site at XZW Rick is excited about the potential to Also at H.G Webb House, Cnr Boundary & Victoria Streets, Hamilton develop locally processed and manufactured fun products such as skateboard decks from Whaingaora’s recyclables. They are also working with Hamilton’s Convex Innovative Packaging managing director Owen Embling to turn number two plastics into plastic film that could be used to make pre-paid plastic bags. However, Rick says, it will be the consumer who determines how waste management enterprises like Xtreme will need to respond to Raglan’s waste dilemmas. He knows of locals – including a family of four – who make a conscious effort to create less waste and are down to one prepaid yellow bag a month. “That sort of justifies us making the bags and eventually people will get to the point where they don’t need them.” And Rick’s keen to encourage people to MP for Taranaki-King Country buy reusable, buy local, buy quality and buy A proud supporter of Rural in bulk. & Provincial New Zealand “We mustn’t lose sight of the need to wean ourselves off single-use plastics and Inglewood Office Te Awamutu Office A 53 Mutu St, PO Box replace them with multiple-use alternatives A 80 Rata St, PO Box 124, Inglewood 4330 302, Te Awamutu 3800 and where necessary replace them with P 07 870 1005 P 06 756 6032 plant-based plastics.” E Kuriger.Teawamutu@ E Kuriger.Inglewood@ For the time being, XZW will parliament.govt.nz parliament.govt.nz continue finding innovative solutions to facebook.com/BarbaraKurigerMP Whaingaroa’s waste on their journey to a barbarakuriger.co.nz zero waste Whaingaroa. Robin reminisces in the garden of her old Nihinihi Ave home overlooking the estuary and the airstrip.

N

oted New Zealand artist Robin White took a trip down memory lane to Raglan over the Christmas/New Year holidays – and found her home town as a teenager “changed out of recognition”.

Junior Doctors’ Strike The union representing junior doctors has indicated its members will be going on strike from

7am on Tuesday 15 January to 7am on Thursday 17 January

This strike will severely affect our ability to carry out our services at Waikato Hospital and some services may be affected at some of the rural hospitals. To reduce the number of patients in hospital over the period leading up to and during the proposed industrial action we will be: • Rescheduling some appointments for surgery, treatments and outpatient appointments • Giving priority to emergency, intensive care and maternity. All patients whose operations or clinical appointments are affected by the strike will be notified by telephone or mail. Not all clinics are being deferred, so if you have not been notified please attend for your appointment.

Emergency for emergencies

Please keep our Emergency Department for Emergencies only. If your illness or injury is not urgent, you may face long delays. • Go to your family doctor or local accident and medical centre • Contact Healthline on 0800 611 611 for advice from a trained professional • Need mental health support and someone to talk to? Free call or text 1737 any time, 24 hours a day. You’ll get to talk to (or text with) a trained counsellor. Should the strike notice be lifted services will resume.

Thank you for your patience.

“It wasn’t like this,” she told the Chronicle, taking in Oram Park on one side of Nihinihi Ave and the 1960s house her father built overlooking the estuary on the other. “Everything looked so different.” Robin recalled Nihinihi Ave as a metal road and just a few baches back then. There was no reticulated water or sewerage and only a carry can for a toilet, she said, standing by the shed her family lived in on the property until their “very simple” two-bedroom house was ready to move into. “I loved living by the sea and being on my own,” the celebrated Kiwi painter and printmaker who in 2003 was made a Dame, revealed of her time here. “I spent hours pottering around the estuary (at the bottom of the section) … fishing for herrings and mullet … or out in the dinghy.” She remembered Wayne Petchell – who went on to run his family’s Bow St supermarket for many years – exercising his racehorse on the beach, and the Kereopa boys riding their horses into town. “And I had my first driving lesson on the airstrip,” the 72 year old added as she looked out across the estuary. “Camp end.” Robin did her fourth and fifth form years (now years 10 and 11) at Raglan District High School, as the area school was then known, where her interest in art was nurtured. “I did art to School Certificate (level) at Raglan,” she revealed to colourful Martinborough publisher Alister Taylor in his lavish 1981 book ‘Robin White, New Zealand Painter’. “My teacher was a man who wasn’t an art teacher but he was very interested in art himself. He somehow got me through School Certificate. Art was the highest mark of all my subjects, but it wasn’t particularly high.” She later boarded at Epsom Girls’ Grammar and then went on to Elam School of Fine Arts, where she rated the celebrated Colin McCahon as “the most influential of all my lecturers”. Robin – who now lives in Masterton – was back in town briefly between Christmas

and New Year for the unveiling of Tex Rickard’s memorial at Poihakena Marae alongside that of his land rights activist wife Eva, a Kereopa. She told the Chronicle her father, Albert Tikitu White, had been great friends with Tex back in the day and both grew large crops of kumara in Raglan’s “perfect” sandy soil. “Dad built a huge box in the garage where he stored the kumara,” she laughs. “He used to give away sacks of it at Christmas … and swap with the Kereopa clan for kaimoana.” Robin said it was wonderful to see how the local land has since been reclaimed, nurtured and developed. She was also impressed at all the activity on the marae, from the kohanga to the carving school. “It is alive and well,” she said, acknowledging the groundwork of an earlier generation. Robin’s work through to the early 1980s focused, as Alister Taylor noted, on the “landscape in which she lives and the people whom she knows and loves”. While paintings like ‘Sam Hunt at the Portobello Pub’, ‘Mana Railway Station’ ‘Mangaweka’ and ‘Fish and chips at Maketu’ rank among her best known works from the period, her catalogue also included locally inspired paintings of her family home in Nihinihi Ave and a series of watercolours entitled simply ‘Sandhills, Raglan’. For the Raglan paintings she worked from her old sketches and photographs from that time. Robin immersed herself during the 80s and 90s in the island lifestyle of remote Kiribati in the central Pacific, turning her hand to woodcuts and other styles of art which still influence her today. She has represented New Zealand at a number of international exhibitions, and in 2017 won the NZ Art Awards Laureate title which helped her continue collaborations with Pacific artists. Robin was made a Distinguished Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2003. Edith Symes

F

rom yoga to gardening, cooking vegetarian kai and patching up an earth dome – it all got filmed over four full days late last year when a television crew visited Solscape eco retreat for an upcoming series on the joys of a life unplugged. “I was surprised how long it took to set things up,” Solscape co-owner Phil McCabe told the Chronicle of the 30-minute Raglan episode to be screened later this year. But he was also impressed with the professionalism of the small crew from Scottie Productions throughout the daily schedule of filming for the series, which will screen first on Maori Television and next year on TVNZ 1. Entitled ‘Off the Grid with Pio’, the lifestyle programme follows Pio Terei as he sets out on a tour around the motu to investigate the lives of whanau and individuals who are embracing aspects of sustainable living. Pio is quite “a character”, says Phil. He is interested in people’s relationships to the environment and has a grounded approach to things. “He’s real.” While Pio – with programmes like ‘Tales from the Trails’ and ‘Tangaroa’ behind him – brings his trademark humour and style to the show Phil found that his director, cameraman and soundman were all “good guys” to host up at Solscape during the full-on days of filming. Phil says the filming was very much an interactive process. Pio joined Phil’s partner

and Solscape co-owner Bernadette Gavin for a yoga session, mucked in with the gardening and composting, created a bit of chaos in the cafe kitchen alongside the head chef and helped out with some repair work on the earth domes. He talked to Bernadette and Phil about the philosophy of Solscape and what their intentions were, Phil says, at which point the couple explained how their backpackers accommodation on 10 acres overlooking Manu Bay had evolved into an eco retreat. That happened on realising they had the opportunity to influence people, says Phil, so they started to create working models of sustainability. “And we’re still not finished.” Phil is proud of what they’ve accomplished so far, especially during the past decade. Solscape now offers a diverse range of accommodation – from camping to contemporary and alternative lodgings – a communal kitchen, a surf school, yoga centre and a seasonal vegetarian restaurant with extensive organic gardens. Educational courses such as permaculture design are also regularly on offer. “Solscape gives a lot of people the chance to be in a different space, to clear minds and hearts from hectic 21st century lives,” says Phil. And the highlight of the crew’s visit to Solscape? Perhaps the song Pio wrote while there. “He performed it on his departure as his koha to us,” says an impressed Phil. Edith Symes

Learning about reflexology with Diane

T

his week the Chronicle caught up with local reflexology practitioner, Diane Davies.

How would you describe reflexology? Reflexology is a natural therapy. It works on all body systems using finger or thumb pressure, on hands, the feet or face. It's a unique journey for everyone, working on a truly holistic basis to aid homeostasis within us. What training is involved for a practitioner like you? I studied at one of the Scottish schools for 18 months before qualifying in 2004. Thereafter I continued with additional practices in pregnancy & fertility, as well as working with diabetic and cancer patients. How did you end up on this path? A very personal journey for me. After being diagnosed with lupus in 1992, I needed a much more natural approach to my health and well being. With lupus, the severity differs from person to person, my biggest hurdle was being told I had six years left before end stage renal failure

Lions New Year's eve parade All images thanks to Margaret Dillon

and that was when my path to learn about reflexology started. A lot of reading and studying commenced as did a new chapter in my life. After nearly twenty years and hundreds of beautiful clients I had worked with, my own body began to fail. I had to give in to dialysis and am currently heading towards my eighth year post kidney transplant. You have spent time in India. What did this involve? Last year was a busy year and this included my three months diploma course in Ayurveda Medicine in India. The whole concept of the traditional Indian healing system works well around my reflexology. What do you offer your clients ? Everyone is unique as is their bodies, each treatment is specifically designed for each person. I like to work with a combination of subtle touch and intuitive energy to allow imbalances to restore or maintain optimum health. I offer a private and totally confidential approach to all health and well being, in the comfort of their own home.
