hat a great family morning on the Raglan wharf. The Raglan Sport Fishing Club hosted Kids on the Wharf on Easter Saturday arranged to coincide with high tide, which sees the best fishing in the wharf area. Entry was free to all participants under 15, accompanied by a parent or

guardian. We had great weather with 59 children participating along with their parents. All the kids got an ice block and a drink care of Fish at the Wharf, and Bill from Sweet As Popcorn and not to be forgotten, Hamilton’s Top Catch supplied the prizes for the winners. The event is not only about the heaviest fish but also about the kids learning to handle fish for release in the correct manner. Each child got a Black Magic fish towel with instructions to wet it and for it to be used in the event of catching an undersized fish. MPI measuring tapes in a bag of other goodies were provided to all. One of the highlights of the day had to be the hand-feeding of Hugh’s pets. The yellow tail kingfish that arrived were not small and it’s a real tourist attraction at the wharf. Let’s hope that they get to stay there unmolested. The Raglan Sport Fishing Club enjoyed the event just as much as the children. Thanks for all the compliments we will be back next year. Raglan Sport Fishing Club

Three generations of women gather for storytelling on Ngarunui Beach.

Best wishes to these young women in our community - Vida, Hineora, Luna, Stella, Taimania, Kowhai and Bella.

even girls and their mothers shared a special “journey” recently exploring their feminine identity through the revival of ancient Māori rites to support the 11 and 12 year olds as they transition from childhood to young womanhood. Described by local mum Cassandra Arthur as “quite transformative and essential”, the four-day Kōhine Rite – held across six locations around Whaingaroa and Waingaro – culminated in an overnight campout and a celebratory reunion with the community. The whole experience was magical, Cassandra told the Chronicle, as they journeyed together to an understanding of “how our bodies work as women” and “our connection to nature”. Monika de la Cruz Carbello said she and her daughter also gained lots of insight into old rites of passage. Both appreciated the cultural dimension which was delivered mostly through storytelling and imagery. The experience was “really quite profound”, she said. The weekend began at the local surf club, where the girls and their mothers

got to know one another and the old but new rites of passage. Some of the girls arrived apprehensive, said facilitator Madelin Watson, but quickly warmed up to the journey ahead. Their “Māmās” had put in the groundwork months before – fundraising and so on – to make it all happen. Kōhine was a community-led initiative, Madelin explained, like its forerunner Poutama Tāne rites of passage for local teenage boys and their fathers. It was essentially a learning journey weaving together ceremony, education, challenge and celebration – designed to support young people and their whanau to navigate the passage from childhood to adolescence. Highlights included a dawn pure and tohi – a cleansing and affirming ceremony – led by Māori elders at Ngarunui beach, followed by a moving-through-transition rite for mothers and daughters with local choreographer Patti Mitchley. The rites were designed to support girls to separate from their childhood identity, transition into their changing lives and bodies and reintegrate with their community as young women, added

Madelin whose background is with Natural Fertility New Zealand. Madelin was delighted with the outcome of the inaugural Kōhine Rite and the feedback has been really positive, she said. Her partner Tiaki Coates runs the corresponding Poutama Tāne Rite, which will be held again in November. The couple have established local charitable trust Poutama Rites of Passage whose work is currently supported by the J R McKenzie Trust. The Kōhine rites of passage was also made possible by generous contributions from Raglan Lions Club, Raglan Surf Life Saving Club, Raglan Buds Flower Farm, Top Cut Butchery Raglan, The Herbal Dispensary, WOK, Soul Food Farm, Raglan Four Square, Raglan SuperValue, The Naked Dairy, Raglan Honey, Volare Bread, Taunga Kereru Farm, Zinnia, Eye Spy, Raglan Surf Co, The Monster Company, The Shack, Fallenfront, Michelle’s Happy Place, Raglan Coconut Yoghurt, Ocean Inlays Jewellery and others. *To find out more email info@ poutamarites.nz. Karioi Project biodiversity ranger Dayton Keremeta is concerned the misuse of the stolen traps will pose a danger to native wildlife.

A

spate of rat trap thievery is hampering Karioi Project’s predator control programme in a year when the numbers of rodents are predicted to spike. A 'mega mast' event – exceptionally heavy seeding – in New Zealand forests boosts rodent and stoat numbers, and when the seed is gone, they turn to native birds, bats, lizards and insects. Karioi Project manager Kristel van Houte says it comes at a vulnerable time as oi (grey-faced petrel) – the project’s keystone species - return to the Whaingaroa coastline for the first time this year to begin breeding. “We’ve noticed three times as many rats this year and we are increasing our trap checks in response to the increasing numbers of predators.” Karioi biodiversity rangers Duncan Mackay and Dayton Keremeta are finding the traps missing but say the thieves are leaving the tunnels behind and are concerned the misuse of the traps will pose a danger to native wildlife as well as domestic animals. “The tunnels are designed for a predator to enter at one end to take the bait, without the tunnel

other animals are vulnerable to getting trapped,” Duncan says. The team of mostly volunteers have their work cut out for them as they battle the rodent plague and Kristel says it’s disheartening to encounter the missing traps. “We had an amazing response from the community when we put the call out for more volunteers. We would encourage people who are interested in predator control to use our trap library.” The Karioi Backyard Hub Trap Library loans traps for up to three months at little to no cost and there are already 240 backyard traps in Whaingaroa. Karioi Project volunteer coordinator Bexie Towle is hosting oi nights, which provides the opportunity for the community to learn about oi monitoring, visit their habitat and possibly hear or see the birds. To find out more about the trap library or oi nights visit www.karioimaunga.co.nz or check out Karioi Project Facebook page. Janine Jackson

Outdoor Bowls aggregate challenge winners T his bowls challenge is run through the summer season and is made up of eight local tournaments. Some years back the decision was made to encourage members to enter into these events by incorporating them all into an ‘aggregate competition’.

Players must play in a minimum of six events to remain in the competition. Each event has it’s own significance in that each trophy has been donated by a then member or a past member’s family. These are the Moore Cup, the Harbour View Cup, the Reeves Trophy, Crake Memorial Plate, Tom Stephens Triples Trophy, Marx Triples Trophy, McDonald Pairs Cup and the Knowles Trophy. The last two events of the competition were run recently, the McDonald Pairs on April 13 and The Knowles Triples Trophy on April. The McDonald Pairs saw 17 members take part in it, so one team had to be a ‘triples’ team. They played three games of eight ends to find the winners. These were Blue Stephens and Pim Blair with two and a half wins and winning 19

ends over all three games. Denis Pizer and John Carr came in second with two wins but with 14 ends won. In third place were Colin Bouzaid and Gordon Mills and fourth were Terry Green and Chris Montford. Eighteen members took up the challenge on April 27 in the Knowles Triples Trophy event in a last ditch effort to win it and then win the overall Aggregate Competition. Maws Wahanga, Sharon Llewellyn and Gordon Mills won the Knowles Triples Trophy having two wins and 15 ends won, Denis Pizer Murray Ansley and Murray Eddy came in second with two wins and 14 ends won with Alan Price, Alex Lorenzen and Pim Blair in third place, also with two wins but only 13 ends won. Once all the calculations were worked out the overall winner of the Aggregate Competition was Murray Eddy with 41 points, Alan Price a very close second with 40 points and third equal were Maws Wahanga and John Carr on 38 points each. Wow, what an outcome. Congrtulations to you all. Roll ups are still being held on Wednesdays and Saturdays with a 12.45pm report in time. A small fee applies. Happy Bowling , Eileen Stephens

Call for Further Submission on Spectacular rock 'n' roll Stage 1 of Proposed District Plan double header at the YOT

W

Waikato District Council Chief Executive Gavin Ion examines about 12,500 pages in 16 volumes of submissions that were publicly released today along with a call for further submissions.

aikato District Council has today called for ‘further submissions’ on nearly 1,000 submissions that it received following notification of the Proposed Waikato District Plan (Stage 1) in July last year. Waikato District Council Chief Executive Gavin Ion says, “This is an important milestone on our progress towards finalising a new District Plan that brings together the old Franklin and Waikato sections to provide a consistent approach to development and growth across the district.” A further submission is a written statement that allows you to support or oppose other people’s submissions. It gives you the opportunity to comment on how a submission may impact you, and to have your views considered by the Hearings Panel along with the original submission. You do not need to have made an original submission to make a further submission. The period for further submissions is open until 9am on Monday, May 27, 2019. Anyone requesting to be heard will have an opportunity to present their submission in person at the hearings which are scheduled to start later this year. Gavin Ion says the District Plan is an important document that tells the community how the district’s land can be used, developed and subdivided. “The Plan gives guidance as to what you can do with your land, for example, whether you can subdivide your property and where you can site a building. It also protects our cultural heritage and our environment by identifying Māori sites of significance, heritage buildings and significant natural areas.”

Stage 1 of the Proposed District Plan includes all topics and provisions except those related to natural hazards and climate change, which form part of Stage 2. A draft of Stage 2 is expected to be released later this year. The Waikato District Council’s planning and policy team’s advice for people wishing to make further submissions on Stage 1 is to take the time to read and understand the submissions that have already been made in the areas of interest to you, and how these submissions might affect you. In order to assist you, the submissions already made, and the Summary of Submissions (listed alphabetically by submitter and by order of the chapters in the Proposed District Plan), can be found on the council’s website www.waikatodistrict.govt.nz. Printed versions are also available in all the council’s offices and libraries. You are entitled to make a further submission if you can demonstrate a special interest in the Proposed District Plan. So please take care to show either that your interest is greater than the public in general, or that you are representing a relevant aspect of the public interest. If in doubt, council staff suggest you make a further submission and the Hearings Panel will decide whether it can be considered.

The council encourages anyone making a further submission to do it online, but hard copies of the submission forms are also available from all council offices and libraries, or you can phone 0800 492 452 to request one. WDC

T

he YOT Club have a spectacular rock 'n' roll doubleheader at this Saturday with Bob Log III as well as Labretta Suede & The Motel 6 playing. Bob Log III is a one-man mutant blues/ guitar hero from the Untied States who is constantly touring globally. Labretta Suede and The Motel 6 are one of the finest live acts in New Zealand who are heading to Spain after this tour. Both these acts are two of the finest live acts you

can hope to see, which means an epic night of underground rock 'n' roll. We have a couple of other epic band gigs coming up as well. San Diego natives the Schizophonics are playing Saturday, May 25. They are being toured by the man who first brought The White Stripes out of America. Expect a blistering live act possibly on the cusp of greatness. On Saturday, June 1, we have Japanese rock 'n' roll fiends Watusi Zombie. These guys are rom the same scene as the King Brothers and The Vottones. Supported by Auckland band, Cindy, who are once again a live act not to be missed.
