Walkway celebration marks completion of Raglan Wharf projects
from Waikato District CouncilThe much anticipated Whaaingaroa / Raglan Wharf Western Walkway is now open to the public.
The walkway was officially opened last week, Friday 3 May, in a Karakia ceremony led Kaumatua Atutahi Riki, of Ngaati Maahanga and Tainui, alongside Mayor Jacqui Church and other dignitaries
“YAY!!.... it’s a celebration of so many parts coming together, the synergy of us all collectively, and what more can we celebrate on this lovely Whaaingaroa day than this,” she said.
Waikato District Council’s General Manager of Service Delivery Megan May said today marked the end of a project a
government approaching us in 2019 with the suggestion of a wharf project”.
“We couldn’t have done it without the funding we received from Kaanoa Regional Economic Development and Investment Unit, and this was further supported by the Department of Internal Affairs with additional money from the Better Off Fund, as well as our partnerships with Raglan Community Board and our Iwi partners - Ngaati Maahanga, Ngaati Hourua, Tainui o Tainui, Ngaati Tahinga and Ngaati Tamainupō.”
Raglan Community Board chair Dennis Amoore said when you looked around it was amazing what you could do when you get a few people in a room who are positive and enthusiastic about making a difference. “We can achieve a lot.”
Councillor Lisa Thomson acknowledged local Simon Te Wheoro for his artwork ‘Pā Kahawai’ at the entrance. “The sculpture is a lure for manuhiri and for locals alike to come here,” she said.
The Western Walkway is the final piece of work completing the redevelopment of the Whaaingaroa Wharf and wider harbour, which started in August 2021.
There were four key projects identified by the community, which included the Pontoon Design and Build, The Whaaingaroa Wharf Structural Repair project, Whaaingaroa Harbour Strategy, and the Whaaingaroa Wharf Walkways project. The aim of the walkways project was to create a pedestrian-friendly precinct that is safer and more accessible for all ages and abilities.
The Western Walkway features a new seawall, tidal steps and terraces to improve access to water at the northern end, and a kayak ramp at the southern end where the walkway connects with the existing footpath at the end of Wallis Street.
Other significant features also include cultural and historical signboards, the ‘Pā Kahawai’ entrance sculpture, tree pits and planting and a raised pedestrian crossing at the entrance.
While the walkway is open and the new area ready for the public, the tidal stairs are still undergoing some finishing works before the fencing can be removed, this is

Junior golf coaching restarts
by Pete AimThe sun was streaming down as were the golf clubs, balls, and giggles last week as Raglan Golf Club celebrated the start of term 2 Junior Golf Coaching.
Junior Golfers delighted in the various golf activities set out by coaches Glenn, Bob and Pete.” We always have a start up drill so that when the students arrive they have a challenging but fun activity to do. Keeping them busy and challenged is very much our coaching philosophy", quoted Bob.
Following the initial warm up it’s off for skills and drills then finally play a few holes where we can introduce some golf rules and etiquette.
Junior Golf coaching runs for eight sessions on a Tuesday afternoon from 3.30-4.30pm. There are vacancies so if you wish to enrol your child then either visit the Golf Club on a Tuesday afternoon 3.00-3.30pm or enrol via the club’s website.

Old School Arts Centre building project nears completion after 11 years
from Raglan Old School Arts Centre
When Raglan Old School Arts Centre committee sat down with community members in 2013 to discuss the possibility of building a new home for their increasingly popular pottery classes they had little idea they were looking at an 11-year, $560,000 project.
The project eventuated in the Art Centre’s Creative Space and Clay Shed building which is due for completion at the end of May with the installation of an accessibility lift.
The ground-floor Clay Shed now sports two kilns while the first floor Creative Space, with its stage, lighting, sound panels and tiered seating, is in demand by diverse community groups – everything from yoga classes to drama groups and the popular Live and Local music concerts.
The installation of the lift ensures no-one in the community should be excluded from the upstairs activities.
However, with spiralling costs, the project committee is again fundraising – this time for $4000 to complete lift shaft work.
Raglan Community Arts Council committee chair Rodger Gallagher said it is hoped benefactors and art lovers might consider buying a personalized fund raising brick for $300. The bricks, with the donor’s names engraved, will be permanently placed around the building.
Rodger said from its start in 2013 the building is an example of community planning backed by support from small and large donors.
“A multi-year structured funding and construction approach is then possible starting with feasibility, followed by the many hurdles arising that are necessary to jump. Finally, the reward comes in seeing our local community using the facility every day.”
The first sod of the project was turned in 2018 and the building blessed in a dawn ceremony in January 2020.
If you would like to donate to see the project to completion please go to https://www. raglanartscentre.co.nz/brick-by-brick/ or call into the Old School office on weekdays.
RAW on the hunt for emerging artists for The Hatch
from Raglan Arts WeekendRegistrations for artists for the annual Raglan Arts Weekend (RAW) have now closed with the same amount of artists signed up as last year, but emerging talent still has a chance to enter through ‘The Hatch’.
Throughout May, those artists who consider themselves ‘new’ or ‘emerging’ will be able to apply to be a part of a group exhibition in the Town Hall over the RAW weekend. Approximately 15 artists will be selected to not only exhibit, but to receive guidance and support in their creative journeys.
“Last year’s opening at The Hatch had well over 200 people attend and it was very rewarding to see our next wave of creatives putting themselves out there, meeting potential buyers and selling their work,” says Nicky Brzeska, RAW co-ordinator since 2019. “We are very fortunate that we have Caleb Osborne running the show for us again as he brings a great inclusive energy, has an instinct for what works, and is clearly well tapped into the scene.”
The team is on the hunt for emerging artists to apply for one of the 15 spots up for grabs. “Our application process is simple and the only two requirements are that you identify with the emerging artist definition on our website, and that you live locally in the Whaingaroa area,” Caleb says. “You won’t need a huge body of work either, typically 3 to 4 larger works or 6 – 8 smaller works per artist. We are here to help our new artists by
providing a platform, exhibiting materials and guidance around promoting and exhibiting,” he adds.
Applications will be open until 31 May. Visit www.raglanartsweekend.nz and look under ‘’Emerging Artists” for the application form. For any questions, please reach out to Caleb on rawemergingartist@outlook.co.nz.
A big shout out to the team at Rangitahi Peninsula for their generous support of this event, as well as to the Waikato District Council Creative Communities for their grant.
Why has RAW called it ‘The Hatch’?
The name ‘The Hatch’ represents the process of nurturing and the incubation of new life. It’s also representative of a doorway which points to the transitioning of creative practice and experience.
Whāingaroa Raglan Water Tower Mural project and survey results
from Whaingaroa Destination Management Organisation
Acall for artists interested in creating a new mural on Raglan’s landmark water reservoir has seen an excellent response from around the motu, locally and internationally.
Project Facilitator Jacqueline Anderson says 17 expressions of interest were received and the Whāingaroa Raglan Destination Management Organisation Advisory Panel now has the tough job of selecting just five to move through to Stage Two of the selection process.
“The calibre of artists who participated in the EOI process has been exceptional and we are excited about this next stage of the project,” she says.
A community survey held last month showed 67.2% of respondents supported a fresh new mural, with 25.8% wanting to see the existing mural touched-up while 7% wanted the reservoir left in its current state.
The survey also asked for ideas for the new mural, and the key themes developed from the 270 responses are: Ocean/Water/Wai; Maunga/Mountain; Te Ao Māori; People and Community.
Keep an eye out next month, when we hope to unveil the successful artists and design.
- For further information, contact Jacqueline Anderson, Project Facilitator jacqueline@raglanihub.nz
The five short-listed artists will have until Friday, May 17 to create a concept for consideration by the panel, with the successful artist selected by early June, subject to funding approvals.
Raglan Junior Rugby Club Update
by Jacqui Smith (RJRC President)Raglan junior rugby club is chuffed to announce our Club day is on the 11th May from 9am12pm.
Our kids are chomping at the bit to get onto that field and give their opposing teams a run for their money.
Club day means that all our tamariki teams are playing here at home at Raglan Rugby sports club. We would love your support! There will be a sausage sizzle, raffle and our mates at Morning glory will be there to warm us up with delicious hot drinks available for purchase.
We just want to show some appreciation to those who are good to us. We are incredibly lucky to live in a community who supports and pitches in for our kiddos.
We like to ‘support our supporters’ as much as possible and it would be amazing if our community could help us with that. We give back to those who help us out wherever possible by supporting their businesses, and it all so easy, buy a beer & pie, treat yourself to a cool new hoodie or even just get your groceries at 4Square.
Cheers to Raglan Bakery for once again sponsoring our player of the day certificates. These absolute legends have humbly sponsored us forever. The kids LOVE IT.
Thank you Bowl and social at sky city for sponsoring our tackler/ripper of the day certificates. The kids will be over the moon to receive these.
Huge thank you to our friends at Raglan sign company for the ongoing support and mahi. These guys always have our backs and are always helping out.
We would like to say a huge thanks to all our team hoodie sponsors for their generosity. With the help of these magnificent people, we are able to bring the cost of our club hoodies down for all our players.
Waitomo, Rural safe, Fensin LTD, Property brokers, Wally Smiths & Mr Glass Waikato. Our kids wear these hoodies with pride and we are unbelievably thankful to these businesses for making this possible for our players.
Cheers to our main man JC and the surf emporium team for always giving us heaps of support and help.
They cover our leavers hoodies, help with club trophies, help in raffles and even with our club RJRC T-shirts and much more. Our children are privileged to grow up in a community with people like this.
Satnam and the Raglan 4 square team and Andy at Raglan Rosoi are amazing! We are always incredibly grateful for the support and the awesome player of the day prizes from these top notch people. It fills the kids buckets to see their rugby club logo hung proudly in Raglan 4 Square. These are things the kids won't forget and will always cherish.
And a massive thank you to Raglan Fish at the wharf for sponsoring our club and filling our kids bellies with some delicious Kai.
Big thank you to our club sponsors-

Update from the Raglan Football Club
by Katie LowesAnd we’re off!!! Thanks to everyone that has helped get this season started. Our club has risen by 16% this year alone.
We have teams wearing vintage shirts, we have new roles established throughout the club and committee to manage the growth. We have over 40% female players again… a huge statistic that we should all feel really proud of.
At this point in the season it normally takes a few weeks for all teams to settle in. Every team has its own mini identity; every team has its strengths and weaknesses!! Some teams like to play with a competitive edge and others turn up to enjoy their time together and up-skill collectively. Whatever form your team takes, enjoy the season and remember that Football sports psychology on a global scale is taking the form of inclusivity, participation and frequency
as being major drivers for “success”. The kids just want to PLAY.
If you have questions, reach out to the team coach, the team manager, and committee. Annette is picking up First Kicks coordination, but really, we ALL run this beast, so if you can see something that needs to be done, step-up and make it happen! Everyone in this club is a volunteer; we are a 100% volunteer-run incorporated society structure.
As we prepare for further growth we invite those in our community to step in to the largest sports club in our town and help develop the sport and the club to its best potential.
To keep up to date follow the calendar on our website, and make sure you are connected to comms through our facebook page, and your individual team messaging.

hardware and as always, our good mates at Hunting and fishing Waikato.
We are spoilt to have such great people in our community. They contribute so much and we wouldn’t be able to do what we do without their help. Our little tikes are smiling ear to ear because they know their community believes in them. We are continuously blown away by the generosity and support we receive and the help never goes unnoticed. We are in the process of building life sized statues of them all at our club (just kidding, but they do deserve it).
Last but not least, I would like to say a huge thank you and give a big snuggle to our coaches, managers, committee members, volunteers, supporters and players. Without all of you, none of this greatness would happen.
5.99% - as good as it looks?
Financial advice and mortgage management tips with local mortgage advisors, Loan Market - award winning mortgage advisors
Mortgage advisor Brendan Brits. Contact 021 913 302 and email brendan.brits@ loanmarket.co.nz
Analready slow autumn housing market is heading into winter and NZ owned challenger bank SBS (Southland Building Society) has come out with an enticing headline mortgage rate of 5.99% in an effort to increase its market share.
On the face of it, 5.99% looks pretty good. It’s the first rate starting with a 5 that we’ve seen since July 2023 and it’s around 0.66% lower than any main bank’s published offer. When faced with rates in the mid 6’s to mid 7’s this is sure to tempt many.
However, it is a 3 year fixed rate.
Typically in NZ, the longer you fix your mortgage for the more expensive the interest rate gets. Rarely, this switches and the longer term fixed rates become cheaper than the short term rates. That’s where we are at the moment.
The last time the long term fixed rates (3, 4, 5 years) were cheaper than the short term rates (6m, 1 year, 2 years) was in 2007/2008, just before the Global Finance Crisis kicked off. A heap of NZ’ers locked in 3 - 5 year fixed rates in the high 8’s and early 9’s at that point as they were the cheapest rates. Rates then fell fairly quickly by 3% down to 6%. Those locked in on 5 year fixed rates around 9% were ‘very keen’ to get out of those high rates and into a 6 but the ‘fixed rate break fees’ were so high that for most it wasn’t worth breaking.
That’s the key here – ‘fixed rate break fees’. When you take a fixed rate in NZ, if you want to exit the rate before the fixed term is finished, you’re liable for fixed rate break fees. Most banks publish their fixed rate break fee formulas on their websites.
Mortgage advisor Brett Wood. Contact Brett on 021 886 444 email brett.wood@loanmarket. co.nz
The formulas are rather long and complicated and always have a variable which is the ‘cost of wholesale funds’ on the day you go to break your rate. Which no one can accurately forecast.
So no one can accurately forecast what a fixed rate break fee might be in the future. But a very rough rule of thumb is that if the rates have gone up from when you took the rate, there probably won’t be a break fee. If the rates have gone down from when you took your rate, there likely will be a break fee.
As no one can read the future and tell you where interest rates are going to go, if you’re considering taking a long term fixed rate such as SBS’s 3 year at 5.99% you want to be pretty sure you won’t need to break that rate before it finishes.
Having said all that, if you follow the financial news and have a view on where you think rates will head, it’s good to look at the numbers on it and compare total costs for various rates. For example, if you’re trying to decide between the 3 year 5.99% rate and a 1 year rate of 6.85%, the break even between those rates is 5.56%. That means that in 1 year’s time, if the 2 year rates are lower than 5.56% you would have been better off taking the 1 year rate then refixing for a further 2 years (to make up the total 3 years). Do you think 2 year fixed rates will be lower than 5.56% in 1 year’s time?
So yes, 5.99% is a headline grabber but there is quite a bit to consider before jumping on it. It could be a great move or it could be a decision that costs you many thousands. Of course everyone’s situation is different so seek professional advice before making a decision.
Cat Flu and Respiratory Issues
Flu is extremely common amongst humans, especially during the Winter months but did you know that this highly-contagious respiratory disease affects cats too?
Younger and much older felines are especially vulnerable to flu, with notable symptoms including constant sneezing, a runny nose, dry coughing and a sudden loss of appetite.
Pneumonia refers to inflammation of the lungs, and many of the symptoms for this pet emergency are similar to that of flu. If your pet exhibits any of these behaviours, please visit your local vet team.
Susceptible cats (kittens, elderly, immunecompromised) can get an infection by direct contact with another infected cat or by environmental exposure to objects that have been contaminated with infectious secretions, such as food and water bowls, litter boxes, toys, and bedding.
If you’ve recently acquired a kitten, please make sure you fully vaccinate, or if you have an elderly cat it may need a an annual booster to prevent disease.

So Floral: Making It Work
News from RangitahiMeet Sophia, the owner of So Floral. Creator of earthy, unique and creative floral pieces.
We love the supportive, creative community of Raglan and we are always interested in meeting people who are making their businesses and lifestyles work to suit our small-town living.
Sophia specialises in NZ grown flowers, both fresh and dried. You may have seen her dried flower work around town or complementing the interiors of some of our beautiful homes in Rangitahi! Sophia uses flowers as a form of art and is passionate about sharing her knowledge - whether it be to her lovely customers buying individual bouquets, or to groups of enthusiastic audiences in the workshops.
We spoke to Sophia about why she chose to live in Raglan, and how she has created a successful business in our thriving town.
"I was wanting to move back to NZ for the last few years. We visited last February and fell in love with Raglan's charm. The surf is definitely one of the main reasons and we loved the community feel and holistic lifestyle it had to offer."
Sophia has been based in Raglan for the past 12 months. With the economic challenges which we have all been facing, we were keen to hear about how she is adapting
what I may need. I have become good at improvising!! We do find NZ so expensive compared to Australia, but we have planted and grown veggies which is also so rewarding and what I really missed about NZ."
"We are taking on more local workshops and will focus more on our DIY online courses which are accessible to anyone with a postal address."
"We also sell pre-made designs and do custom designs and styling. Weddings will become more of a focus next season. Raglan is definitely a spot for intimate weddings which I love."
Sophia began her studies in Hawke’s Bay, then continued her education in Sydney at Pearsons School of Floristry. "I’ve always loved creativity and nature, so it was the perfect career for me. I guess it’s in my DNA too… my Grandma was a florist and had her own shop and also Mum used to make wreaths and love dried flowers."
You can see Sophia during the week at the Tiny Shop in Raglan town centre and hear all about what she has to offer. You can even create something beautiful in the comfort of your own home - her workshops are fun to do for birthdays, hens parties, dinner parties or whichever occasion you wish to celebrate.
And if you decorate your home with any of her beautiful creations, be sure to share photos with us - we would love to see them!

Owners fully committed to move abroad
This brand-new lifestyle property represents fantastic buying, so good in fact that the owners are taking a loss on the cost. The 1.2 hectare (2.9 old fashioned acres) section is very gently rolling with sweeping rural views, partly comprising 'the sleeping lady' that is Mt Karioi. Whether you choose to extensively garden the property or fence off small paddocks for your grazing animals, the land lends itself to both options. The bright and airy 158m2 home consists of generous open plan living and kitchen space, 3 bedrooms, master with ensuite, double internal access garage plus a 112m2 shed.
5 acre compact farmlet
It is rare to find a compact farmlet with as much on offer as 397 Ruapuke Road. For starters, the modern 2-bedroom home lies well for the morning sun and is tucked away from the prevailing westerly wind. The home is warm with double-glazed joinery throughout, a wood burner is on-hand to heat the spacious open plan Lounge, Dining and Kitchen quickly and the rest of the home with ease. The home is in tip top condition with plenty of internal storage, a separate laundry and 2 toilets. All of this comes complete with a garage/ shed/ workshop that could easily
Best view of the Bridal Veil Falls, hands down.
The Newton Homestead was originally positioned in the very best location to capture the very best views of the Waireinga, Bridal Veil Falls and her surrounding reserve and to this day she arguably still retains this honour. The Homestead also provides generous vistas out towards, Aotea, Kawhia and onwards to Albatross Point as well as the ever changing and somewhat moody Mt Karioi. It was built in an era of practicality when timber was cheap and 'big bones' were the norm, with separate kitchen/ dining, a ginormous lounge, 4 bedrooms, master with ensuite, a separate laundry and ample shedding.
