Junior students at Raglan Area School all set to start classes with donated stationery from Raglan Four Square:

atagonia and Dave Rastovich have teamed up with the Karioi Project in Raglan to create something pretty special. The film “Karioi” will showcase how a community can protect biodiversity at any level and raise awareness for a great cause! We’re excited to be sharing your story with the rest of the world! The film launches on February 26th at Raglan Surf Co. Thanks to everyone who is a part of this special night especially Patagonia and Raglan Surf Co. Tickets are now SOLD OUT for this event. But there will be many more chances to see the film!

The Karioi Project is a community group based in the New Zealand surf town of Raglan, working to reestablish nearby Karioi as a seabird mountain. A third of the world’s seabirds call New Zealand home, but their nesting habitats are under threat from introduced predators. The Karioi Project is working to save the seabirds, in the process creating a strong community group with a deep understanding of local ecology. Karioi tells the story of the group as they work to save the ōi, restore the maunga of Karioi, and in the process create a strong, vibrant community

here’ll be no stationery costs for parents of juniors at Raglan Area School this year, thanks to an “out of the blue” donation of $7500 from the local Four Square supermarket. School learning assistant Angela Massey – who was contacted in the holidays by store owner Satnam Bains – says it’s an “incredibly generous” offer that helps both the school and the families. “Huge ups to him,” she adds. The funds cover $25 worth of stationery purchased by the school for

the 300 or so children in years 0-6. This includes everything from exercise books, pens, pencils and erasers to glue sticks and highlighters. “It’s funds that parents don’t have to find from their back pockets.” Older students have more specialist and varied needs, Angela explains, so the focus on the junior classes means it was a simple task to add up the overall costs for what is effectively half the school roll. Principal Louisa Barham told whanau in a newsletter “we are very fortunate

to have had the costs for this stationery sponsored”.

Old School Arts Centre manager Jacqueline Anderson says that people around the world didn’t let lockdown boredom dampen their creativity. “There was so much to see online from lockdown songs, dramas, animation, horrors, dystopian thrillers and hilarious comedies. Official America's Cup Fanzone at Isobar

e have an Americas Cup official Fanzone right here in Raglan. The Chronicle caught up with Matt Taggart, owner of Isobar and Ozone to learn about how this came about and what's on offer. Matt you have put Raglan on the map with managing to secure a Official Americas Cup ETNZ Fan Zone for Isobar. Tell me how this came about? I contacted the Americas Cup Org which as winners of the last Cup in Bermuda ETNZ manage the event. Grant Dalton and his team had the idea for signing up Fanzones. There are 15 around the country. How did your connections to yachting develop?

I used to race yachts professionally back in the day and worked in the super-yachts industry as a captain. I have always loved the drama of the Americas Cup plus have a few mates on ETNZ and the Prada team that have come down who learnt to foil with our Ozone NZ Hydrofoil school. Tell us about what the Fan Zone involves? What's on offer at Isobar and when? We will be screening the racing live at Isobar and will be offering free nibbles but the main point that ETNZ were looking for is passionate support for ETNZ. Any predictions from you ? ETNZ will surely take the win, their latest foils look incredible but who knows. No doubt the country will be on the edge of our seats. We look forward to cheering them on at Isobar Pop in to the official America's Cup Fanzone at Isobar to view racing and support your crew.

Raglan Sailing Club Regatta

he weekend of 13th and 14th February saw the annual regatta hosted by the Raglan Sailing Club on our beautiful harbour. What a great weekend of sailing! Apart from our own club members we had a good turn-out from members of the Waikato Thames Yachting Association for enjoyable competition racing on both days. Winds were (mostly!) steady and the sun was shining. We had a range of boats taking part – lasers, open bics, 420s and an opti which had a good run! Several races were held on both days keeping the sailors and support crews busy.

Raglan weekday lifeguards win best patrolled beach after busy season

ver the 2020-21 season Ngārunui Beach, Raglan had the busiest season of all beaches patrolled by Surf Life Saving Northern Region, which covers from Raglan throughout Auckland to the Far North. The Raglan weekday service started the first week of December and will be ending this Friday the 26th of February. During this time the lifeguards handled an impressive 15 rescues, 10 assists, 41 first aids and 5 searches. The team also carried out over 1800 preventative actions involving over 5000 beach goers. For their efforts, the team at Raglan received an award for the best patrolled beach in the region. One of the most memorable rescues occurred just after 9:30am on Friday 22nd of January. The lifeguards were enjoying breakfast when they were called out to a kayaker that had capsized one kilometre offshore. "We were preparing for a big day due to crowds from the SoundSplash festival. Conditions were clean with an eight to ten

foot (2.5 - 3 metre) groundswell,” says Tom Herbert, one of the lifeguards who responded. Herbert and fellow lifeguard Hayley Rewi launched an IRB and located the kayaker, navigating their way through big waves, with help from colleagues who were watching from up the hill in the surf club. The kayaker was successfully picked up and brought back to shore for medical assessment. After assessing the kayaker was in good health, Herbert and another lifeguard Chris Malone were immediately tasked to another incident. “Two surfers were stuck in an extremely strong rip pulling from Manu bay to the outer bar,” says Herbert. “After an hour of action on the water, all patients were returned to shore safely". A message from the Raglan Police:

he summer so far has been a busy one in Raglan with a sharp rise in burglaries and break-ins. After a thorough investigation, two people are now facing multiple charges as a result in the spate of burglaries over December. They are now before the District Court and we have been able to return some property to its rightful owners. In January Raglan commercial businesses were twice targeted in the early hours of the morning by youth offenders from out of the area. The investigation continues and Police are optimistic about resolving these cases. In the last 7 days, Raglan Police have responded to 8 reports of family harm. Although this may raise concern, the positive

side of this is that people are prepared to call for assistance when required and report things that are of concern to them. Additionally, Police have also taken reports for an assault, threats and intimidation and a vehicle crash. Lastly, I’d like to remind people that if it is an emergency, it is time critical and happening now, please ring 111. If you would like to make a report of lost property, or report an incident which has already occurred, please dial 105 to report, alternatively you can go online at 105. police.govt.nz and make a report there. Freedom to Fly Whaingaroa: Ignite the Passion

grant that allows creatives to teach their specialty in schools has allowed Jess and Jair from Freedom to Fly to offer creative classes to students at Raglan Area School. We caught up with the couple to hear about the new programme: Tell us a little about the funding process? The Ministry of Education are wanting to offer more grants for creatives to teach their specialty skills in schools. We looked through what was on offer and saw that there could be a fit to work with RAS. We approached teacher Matua Joe who was incredibly perceptive and supportive of the idea and agreed to work extra hours after school with us during term 3 of 2020 to apply for the project grant. Late term 4 we found out that our project had been successful with a substantial grant and plans have since been underway for getting the programme started this Term.

What year groups are involved? Years 5 and 6 students will receive expert teaching and tutoring and after 12 weeks will perform a show for our community. This is a really exciting opportunity. How do the students benefit? Combining a mixture of circus skills and fun, these classes will develop strength, flexibility, balance, well-being, coordination, spacial awareness and left + right brain function. As well as team building, confidence, patience, discipline and consistent practice to learn a new skill. We are excited how engaging and creative Raglan Area School is in supporting programmes. Tell us about the Ignite the Passion performance on Friday? Ignite the Passion was about getting the students excited and inspired. We (F2F) performed segments of our show ‘The Balancing Act’ which will be performed at the NZ Fringe in Wellington in March.

wasn’t going to get involved in the uniform debate but…

During an interview with local counsellor Maree Haworth it became apparent the disagreement is one of those things that’s driven by people’s value. Sometimes we’re a bit vague about our values and that can make it really hard for two groups to find a resolution – sort of like politics. Maybe this is why I’ve seen both sides claiming their way will be more helpful to families economically and why I’ve seen arguments from a Maori perspective for both sides as well. I’ve also seen people say having uniforms prevents poor kids from feeling the shame of not being able to afford the latest styles while mufti proponents say that coming to school with a second hand uniform is what causes this sort of shame. Both sides are right of course. I should front up and say I’m generally not in favour of uniforms. If I’m honest I just feel bewildered when people start saying things like “uniforms instil a sense

of pride in pupils”. Likewise if I start banging on about “uniforms encouraging conformity and squashing uniqueness”, I’m sure half of the people out there will feel equally confused - or maybe even angry at those ideas being given prominence. As we’ve seen lately this leads to people dismissing each other’s ideas as being sense-less because they literally don’t make any sense to them. Maybe a team of highly skilled counsellor/mediators could help everyone get to the bottom of the disagreement but I doubt there’s room for that in the RAS budget. The worst outcome would be for uniforms to be voted in by a narrow margin because that will encourage the issue to stick around and fester. If I was on the BOT I’d be hoping for a really clear mandate – preferably something over 60% - before I felt totally comfortable. What’s the big picture though? I keep hearing how we need new ways of doing things and new ways of thinking if we’re going to solve the many ecological crises bearing down on us. Happily we

live in a community which is full of people capable of new ways of thinking, which is why we have great organisations like Xtreme Zero Waste. I’m also stoked to say that I’ve met lots of students at Raglan Area School who have this quality too.

The fact that Raglan Area School has been producing great kids despite recent ERO reports is really interesting but the question I’m most interested in now is; how can we keep producing young people like this?
