Twenty local creatives have put many hours of work into their wares ahead of the big opening in a fortnight. Among them is champion stitcher Wendy Coxhead who comes up with something different each year to raffle off, adding a few hundred dollars extra to the Raglan Old School Art Centre’s coffers. Her passion is fabric and this time around the prize is an embroidered wall-hanging that took Wendy – now into her 80s and not as dexterous as she once was – many painstaking hours to complete.

From left: Wendy, Susanne and Robyn get into the spirit of Christmas.

Suzanne says the annual exhibition has been a major fundraiser over the years for the new clayshed out the back, and still contributes these days to its running costs. “There’s always a need to replace equipment (like kilns),” she explains. The ever-popular clayshed now has more than 100 members, tenfold that of a decade ago when the ‘Spirit of Christmas’ exhibition was mooted. “We’re now getting three or four new members a month,” says relative newbie Robyn Marsters. She’s matched her husband’s obsession for surfing with an obsession for pottery and “it’s my sanity”, she laughs. Instead of making Christmas trees for the exhibition, Robyn ended up this year fixated on ceramic cats and has made 40 of them, their upright tails possibly good as ringholders.

The cats are raku-fired in a kiln then finished off “quite dramatically” using smoke and flames, she explains, whereas her pit-fired vessels use natural combustibles Home-baked Christmas cakes in crafted bowls can be ordered Nov 24-Dec like local coffee grounds, banana skins, 10 ($45 ea). eggshells and copper wire for effect.

Building community resilience - sharing local stories:

Farming well in the face of climate change

This story is part of a Whāingaroa Climate Collective’s series - sharing stories from people in our community who are building resilience, making connections and taking action on climate change. by Holly Dove

M

ike Moss has lived and breathed farming his whole life.

Currently living in the Waitetuna Valley, on the same land he grew up on, his journey began as a teenager raising sheep and beef on his family farm. He helped transition the farm to dairy in 1983 and then converted to organics in 1999, supplying milk to Fonterra’s organic range. Leading up to this interview, I realised I had a personal connection with Mike – he lives right next to my family’s old farm, and I’d already heard stories of how my great grandfather, Tom Macdonald, used to teach Mike and his brother how to do leatherwork. Driving up the windy valley road, I was excited to spot familiar landscapes I’d seen from pictures in my family photo album and imagine what it would be like to grow up farming around here – catching eels in the Waitetuna river and living close to the land. Two years ago he decided to have a rest from milking cows, sold half the farm, and downsized – “I’m as much a house husband as a farmer now,” he says. When I arrive, he proves this by offering me some freshlybaked banana loaf he just got out of the oven. We’re getting off to a good start. So how has a beautiful place like this changed over the decades and what is farming here in the future going to look like, with a changing climate? What kind of support do our rural communities need to weather the storms (and drought)? Mike says while he doesn’t have all the answers, he does have a few reasons to stay hopeful. You have been farming using some organic practices; I’m keen to hear more about what led you to want to choose to farm this way. I started getting disenchanted with conventional farming - the industry always had a lot of pressure to produce more – carry more stock, put more inputs in and I felt like the profitability was dwindling as well as the health of the animals. A lot of the inputs - like nitrogen fertilisers - were creating imbalances that you then had to spend a whole lot of money to balance out. Once we’d gone through the conversion process [to become organic] we were creating a premium product. Our costs were lower and the revenue for our milk was higher, and it clipped the ticket of where we needed to go

environmentally – we ended up with lower inputs, a much lower stocking rate and a system in balance, which I was happy with. What do you think a changing climate means for farming? We need to get our emissions down – there’s a public and international expectation on that, so that’s one of the biggest challenges. The other challenge is that climate change is upon us and it’s happening harder and faster than a lot of people would have expected. We’re gonna have bigger dry spells, we’re gonna have significant rainfall events, tropical storms and winds that are bigger and harder than what we’re used to, and that in itself will test our farming and infrastructure systems. For farming we’ve gotta think about our pasture species and our animals; planting on hillsides to stabilise them – we know that some pine forestry has been an absolute disaster and we need to learn from that. How would you like to see farming change in the future and what kind of support do you think farmers need to get there? We know that good farming practices can actually build topsoil and carbon and there is a lot of research being done to reduce nitrous oxide and methane - it’s not easy but it is progressing and I can see a time in the not too distant future where, if done right, we can change farming so that it can be part of the solution – not part of the problem. Kiwi farmers are innovative - that’s one of the things that are hopeful - and we can respond to stuff we have to do pretty quickly. I don’t think there will be one silver bullet, but there will be a whole lot of incremental things that will make a difference. We’re already seeing a reduction in dairy cows and our sheep have become more efficient a smaller number of animals are producing more product. We need more funding for research, and we need to make compliance and start-ups easier; let’s have more home-grown, local industries. When I was supplying Fonterra, that milk would go to Auckland to be delivered back down to the Waikato in a plastic bottle. Now look at Dreamview milk – it’s from Raglan and it’s distributed around Raglan and other places. One of the things we need from our government is a more enabling approach for local start-ups like this.

Waitetuna farmer, Mike Moss. Image credit: Becki Moss. What springs to mind when you think of building community resilience here in Whāingaroa? If you add up all the things Raglan is really good at, it’s pretty phenomenal! We are food secure, which is a strength; between kaimoana, meat and milk and vegetables, pretty much everything we can do here – we can grow crops. We have a town bursting with talent - it never ceases to amaze me the people you meet and the skill-bases they have. Everything from working for the United Nations, to computer programming, building, making art and music and the many environmental

initiatives like Xtreme Zero Waste and the Karioi Project. If a situation occurred, where Raglan was for some reason cut off from the rest of the world, we’d do okay. I’ve eaten fish three times this week and none of it I’ve caught – neighbours have given it to me because we share. I love the village economy for what it is, and I think back to my parents’ and grandparents’ day – they didn’t rely on the government for their own resilience, they found it in their own community;

Package free refillery destined for Hamilton by Janine Jackson

A

fter the 2020 lockdown extended her New Zealand holiday, Bridie McNamara found herself reevaluating her next step and started successful bulk bin refillery SWOP instead.

“I was supposed to be going back and just finishing off a bit of travel but the day we were due to fly out was the day we went into Level 4 lockdown.” Launched in Raglan in December 2020, SWOP (Shop Without Packaging) survived the pandemic and now Bridie’s branching out with another store in Hamilton, Bare Refill Grocery. “We definitely didn’t pick the easiest three years to start a new business. I guess the mindset now is, if you can make it through that, surely you can make it through anything else?” she laughs. The Hamilton store will be part of the newly developed urban precinct that houses a mix of produce markets, artisan eateries, dining and retail located in the former Waikato Regional Council building in Hamilton East. “Made approached us because they wanted to have the full supermarket shopping experience, but without a supermarket. So that was kind of where we fit in and there'll also be a butcher and greengrocer. It just felt like the right next move.” The Hamilton store has a larger footprint than the Raglan store which means there will be room for a fridge and freezer to store unpackaged berries, frozen vegetables, milk and oat milk on tap. It doesn’t mean Raglan shoppers will miss out on the new products; Bridie says they will be available online for click and collect in Raglan. Bridie’s business philosophy is simple; providing zero waste products packaging free to help reduce shopping’s environmental impact and encouraging a zero waste lifestyle. “We buy in bulk as much we can and basically you can buy as little or as much as

you want in your own containers. We do sell some prepackaged products in jars and you can drop the jar back. Essentially, you're not creating any new waste, you're just refilling and reusing” she says. SWOP and Bare Refill Grocery have a jar library and customers are encouraged to drop off other packaging that can be reused in the store. Getting behind local boutique foodies is also something Bridie supports; the Raglan SWOP stocks local Dreamview products, Raglan Chocolate and Hunt and Gather refill honey, and she hopes to tap into local produce artisans in Hamilton and around the Waikato. “I’d much rather stock local produce. We've recently swapped a few products to New Zealand growers now that their seasons are starting to get a bit more regular as well, like the walnuts and the pumpkin seeds.” Bridie started SWOP with her auntie Sarah McLeod who lives in Raglan; the pair had seen a similar shop in Wellington, and Raglan had recently lost its bulk bin shop so they knew there was a gap in the market. “She spoke to locals who were travelling to Hamilton to shop in bulk bin stores. We thought if people are willing to travel into Hamilton just to shop this way surely, it's more convenient to bring this way of shopping out to Raglan.” In the first few months Sarah helped out in the shop to give Bridie a break, but Bridie now employs a fulltime shop manager, while Sarah has her hands full running the midwifery degree at Wintec. Having left high school and heading off to spend a gap year travelling, Bridie had not yet had a chance to consider her career options. “I've kind of just done your typical Kiwi OE. I never saw myself going into business.” And, she says, no-one in her family has ever run a business, so it was a matter of learning on the job, and during a pandemic at that.

“Now I feel like having been in business, I wouldn't want to do anything else. You create this skill set that you can't really find anywhere else.” Bridie says the Covid supply chain issues and the weather events that closed the main road into Raglan for a short period of time

and impacted Raglan’s busy summer season have been a blessing in disguise for her growth as a business owner. “You learn those harder lessons quite quickly, and then you adapt and that's kind of your baseline. Whereas now that things are going well you appreciate it a bit more.”

The Yard Sale: rebelling against fast fashion I

n a world overrun by disposable fashion and cookie-cutter trends, there's a rebellious undercurrent challenging the mainstream narrative. Enter the scene of thrifting and vintage clothing—a counter-culture uprising against fast-fashion.

Forget the mass-produced monotony; this is a rebellion fueled by a desire for authenticity, sustainability, and a little edge. We're talking about sifting through racks of the unexpected, unearthing threads that carry whispers of the past and wear their history with pride. And where does this rebellion culminate? None other than The Yard Sale, previously the Raglan Vintage Market, curated by local resident Channelle Ruawai. The Chronicle caught up with Channelle ahead of the next Yard Sale on Saturday, December 2. What inspired you to start the Raglan Vintage Markets/the Yard Sale? I was driven by inspiration to develop a shopping experience that merges clothing, fashion, art, and music. With the philosophy of ‘less is more’ the aim is to promote sustainability, affordability and fulfill the diverse needs of the community in style.

What do you enjoy most about thrifting? One of the most enjoyable aspects of thrifting is its economic and sustainable nature. Additionally, it offers the thrill of discovering a unique vintage piece and evokes a sense of nostalgia. Who or what inspires your personal style? Forever Rihanna cause she has mad style! And nofaithstudios has been inspiring me at moment. How long have the markets been running for and when did the name change happen? We started as one stall pop up in 2021 and last month we rebranded as 'The Yard Sale'. Aptly named, as it takes place at The Yard Cafe, within The Yard. Our new brand identity aims to appeal to a broader audience. What can people expect from the next market coming up in December? Expect a bunch of pre-loved and vintage clothing, OG streetwear, local designers, music, art and tooth gems. We offer a diverse range of fashion choices that cater to individual tastes and preferences. The Yard Sale, pre-loved, OG streetwear and vintage clothing market, 10am - 3pm, Saturday, December 2, The Yard Raglan, Volcom Lane. Playlist by Kaea.

Empowering Community: Whāingaroa hosts inspirational ShotBro performance and Hikoi for Hauora by Maki Nishiyama

I

n a celebration of community spirit and collaboration, Whāingaroa recently played host to a special event featuring Rob Mokaraka, renowned actor and mental health advocate, who brought his impactful Shotbro show to the heart of Whāingaroa. The community had the opportunity to witness Rob's skillful storytelling, where he candidly shares his personal mental health struggles and the transformative journey to healing. The event, held in early November, was made possible through the dedicated efforts of local organisers and the generous support of various sponsors and businesses. The brainchild of Teresa Morgan, a kaiawhina at Raglan Medical, the event's initial vision was to bring the inspirational speaker Butterbean (David Latelli) to the community. However, as the planning progressed, Teresa and Lara Sweetman of Raglan Naturally were introduced to the impactful work of Rob Mokaraka by Michelle Levy, a consultant for Raglan Naturally. The idea gained traction as the Suicide Awareness Roopu enthusiastically supported the suggestion after viewing a documentary about Rob's work on Māori television. Rob Mokaraka, known for his Shotbro show, also became an integral part of the planning process. His positive and flexible approach, coupled with the support of sound technician Taungaroa Emile, created a dynamic and collaborative atmosphere during their stay in Whāingaroa. The duo even had the opportunity to connect with the local community, including a kōrero and kai meet up with Daniel Kereopa and interactions with Armin and Phil of Whāingaroa Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Te Whatu Ora, Raglan Naturally, Raglan Medical, and Raglan Area School were instrumental sponsors, and their support was further amplified through the endorsement of Eddie Neha. The Te Whatu Ora funding came through Neha's connection, who fully endorsed Rob Mokaraka's work and extended the support to include both the Huntly and Whāingaroa communities. The key organising crew included individuals from various community sectors: Teresa Morgan (Raglan Medical kaiawhina), Lara Sweetman (Raglan Naturally Community Well-being Connector), Betty Diprose (RAS counsellor), Craig Mitchell (Raglan Naturally and Raglan Radio), Campbell Imlah (community member), Jo Levy (RAS admin and counselling student), and Joe Rao (ex RAS teacher). The event also received substantial support from local businesses and individuals. Raglan Medical's Takarangi mental health support team, Super Value, Dreamview, Youth Intact, Rose from Rural Delivery, Property Brokers, Margaret Dillon event photographer) and the Surfside Hospitality Team alongside Angela Massey, all played pivotal roles in making the event a success. Special thanks were extended to Deputy Principal Quenten Browne and kaumātua Sean Ellison who welcomed the Shotbro crew to our community with an opening and closing karakia which anchored the event, and to Daniel Kereopa for offering a free surf session. The Suicide Awareness Roopu, a dedicated group within the community committed to addressing mental health issues, played a central role in the event's success. Their collective effort, combined with the support of numerous community businesses, made the Wednesday school show, attended by 90 students and 30 adults, and the Saturday community show, attended by 130 diverse community members, truly impactful.

6 RAGLAN Chronicle

The event's unique touch was felt during the Hìkoi around the three bridges, fostering a sense of unity and trust among attendees. The Hikoi was the brainchild of Grace Mindoro (ex head girl of RAS) who had approached Betty, Lara and Lisa Thomson earlier in the year expressing her concerns for rangatahi mental health and wanting to take some action to address this issue. Ruby Gibbs also came on board and created the fabulous poster for the event. Rob Mokaraka expressed his gratitude for the diversity within the room, acknowledging the interconnectedness of the community. “This community of Whāingaroa//Raglan has the heart of a raiona//a lion! They have brought everyone together to illuminate the suicides in their hapori with aroha, mana, knowledge and heart to increase their basket of knowledge to navigate the tragic losses they have experienced. But most of all, to connect to each other more and utilise the resources available in their community.” Look up "Shotbro - Confessions of a Depressed Bullet" on Facebook to explore Rob Mokaraka's kaupapa and gain further insight into this powerful and special event

he voluntary hours put into the museum by Dr. Patrick Day and Rodger Gallagher would certainly exceed the number of concrete blocks used in the construction of Raglan’s beautiful, custom-built museum. And both these men were instrumental in securing this wonderful facility for our community. After nearly 20 years of hard work, both Pat and Rodger have finally hung up their museum hats, and have stood down from the Committee. Their knowledge and interest will be sorely missed. Their departure has given us an opportunity to speak to Pat and Rodger and hear of the numerous projects they have been involved in during their time at the museum. The first Raglan Museum Society was established in 1966. The original museum committee were Raglan community leaders, keen to see the history of the town and area kept alive for future generations. Initially the museum was housed in the Town hall and then the old fire station building in Wainui Road. It was in the early 2000s that Pat and Rodger attended meetings, and it was not long before Pat found himself being elected as Vice President, then President and Chairman of the Building Committee! The museum collections had increased and could no longer be suitably housed in the space available. Although funding was available through Lottery Grants and other big funding organizations, much work was needed before applications could be made. A Collections Policy had to be developed and a full record of items made. Both Pat and Rodger worked hard at these tasks, and after the Policy was evaluated by historian, Lyn Williams, they proceeded with applications. Neither of these men was retired at this time. Rodger ran his own international consulting business from Raglan and Pat was a lecturer at the University of Waikato and writing books on New Zealand media history, so their commitment to their museum work was even more commendable. Rodger was very much the man in charge of getting the funding for the new museum, while his wife Virginia was in charge of the money, moving the accounting onto a computer accounting package. Rodger was also fully invested in the artefacts and collections side of things. In the early days he started examining the artefacts already held by the museum, considering what could be improved-and then he started improving them!

He and Pat identified the exhibitions that were most important for the area-pioneer Settler history, stories of Wi Neera and Maori history, the World Wars, collection and protection of local adzes-and of course, they acknowledged the significance of surfing for Raglan. Pat had lived in the area since the 70s and was a surfer. He was also the first windsurfer in Raglan. So it was no surprise that his passion led to him curating the surfing exhibition, with Gregor Divett. Good relationships were established with local Ngati Mahaanga iwi representatives. Pat said: “We were keen to show them what we were doing and to seek their support”. One of the kaumatua, Wally Crawford, worked with Rodger on an exhibition of old Raglan photographs, displayed at the Old School Arts Centre. This same exhibition was used at the opening of the new museum building in 2011. One of the achievements of which both Pat and Rodger are very proud, is the acquisition of the Bird collection of numerous Maori artefacts, from the old homestead at Te Akau. The Bird family and local residents of the area had collected and stored these over many years. This was recognized as a “significant world class collection” which had fallen into a poor state of repair, and Pat and Rodger were united in their intentions to protect it for posterity. Pat worked closely with kaumatua, Russell Riki, who spoke with local iwi on both sides of the harbor. The collection was finally brought across to be exhibited in the museum. This was no simple process and once again Rodger’s project management and funding skills came into play, as money was required, and was secured, for the repair of artefacts and the design of what is now an exhibition of world-class standard, which opened on 17.10 2015. Pat and Rodger both recognized the importance of bringing the museum into the 21st century and identified the Past Perfect software package as appropriate for storing information about the museum’s artefacts and collections. Pat supported a part-time employee to attend training sessions so as to be able to enter this information. Rodger’s interest in all things digital led him to develop 3 digital touch screens for visitors to access: Town and Around, Surfing and World War 1. He also developed and maintained the museum website. And now we return to that beautiful building. After all the fundraising, negotiations with the Council (which led to their contributions and agreement to maintain the building) plus a final donation from a mystery donor (later identified as Eileen

Dr. Patrick Day, left, and Rodger Gallagher. Beach Kelly), not to mention input from committee members and interested community members, the new museum was opened in 2011. A long battle, hard-fought, and one that would not have happened without the input from these two men. So now we leave them to enjoy their interests and involvement in other areas of the community. Pat keeps busy with violin playing, art, tai chi and golf-to mention a few. And Rodger continues to put a huge amount of work into his role as Chairperson of Community Arts Council, updating his Raglan 23 website, genealogy and running the cinema at the Old School. We are grateful for their work and enthusiasm and wish them well into the future.

Volunteers - the beating heart of the Karioi Project Written by Holly Dove

Karioi Project news is proudly sponsored by:

Lenny and the small team of rangers.

S

etting off into the forest with a pack full of bait and spare rat traps is just a normal day in the life of volunteer-turned-ranger Lenny Reynolds. Growing up in Wh.ingaroa, Lenny got involved with the Karioi Project from an early age, joining the after-school education programme as a junior ranger and developing his conservation skills as a teenager through the Manaaki Ao (Earthcare) programme.

He volunteered to adopt a trapline which he checked regularly for predators like rats and stoats. Six years later Lenny’s still checking his trapline – and now working as a part-time ranger while he finishes his studies in ecology and biodiversity at Waikato University. “I love it – I get to go out, look at cool things, constantly learning and networking with like-minded people, not to mention the health and wellbeing benefits of being outside in nature,” says Lenny. It’s thanks to volunteers like Lenny and many others that the Karioi Project can operate. There are more than a hundred regular volunteers, checking over 2500 traps every fortnight, and helping out in one-off events like bait-fills and working bees. Their efforts ensure that precious, local native fauna like the .i, koror., ruru, kerer., k.rearea, k.k. and pekapeka can successfully breed each year. Volunteer coordinator Jasmine Edgar says volunteers are the beating heart of the Karioi Project. “I know sometimes people wonder how one person can make a difference, but when you’ve got a hundred volunteers, catching thousands of rats and possums, that makes such a huge difference for our forests and wildlife.” Get involved: -Our next trap-building working bee is on Sunday the 26th of November (contact karioi.backyard@arocha.org for more info). -Want to learn more about volunteering? Raglan Noho Marae visit inspiring health students and rural rangatahi: a cultural immersion experience from Hauora Taiwhenua Rural Health Network

L

ast week, the Raglan community and Poihākena Marae welcomed fifteen tertiary health students from around Aotearoa New Zealand, for a Noho Marae as part of Hauora Taiwhenua’s Rural Health Careers Programme. Noho Marae is a significant aspect of the programme, as a unique opportunity that bridges the gap between tertiary students aspiring for rural health careers and the kaupapa of Māori health. Graciously offered by Ngāti Tahinga in Raglan, hapū of Tainui, this three-day experience highlights the unique and fulfilling opportunities of working in health, as demonstrated within the Raglan community. During their stay, the students will immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of traditional Māori health and wellness principles. Through workshops, cultural interactions, and visits to

local practices and hospitals, they will delve into Rongoā Māori, gaining insights beyond the textbooks.

Last week Poihākena Marae welcomed fifteen tertiary health students from around Aotearoa

Bianca Bisogno, a Social Work student who attended the wānanga, spoke of the learnings offered by the mana whenua. “Te Ao Māori is a space where a lot of people can come in and out of, and bring their own beliefs in and connect to things that exist in this space, with us being a very diverse group. I think the way that the mana whenua invited us to engage in Te Ao Māori by bringing ourselves, what we carry and what’s important to us, is a really beautiful thing because it’s very inclusive.” “A lot of people here aren’t Māori, but at the same time a lot of us will work with Māori people in the health sector, so the way mana whenua brought everyone in makes people feel comfortable, and my hope is that we all would feel that comfort and be able to take Students partake in Mau rākau, a traditional Māori martial art. that with us from this experience.”

Raglan writers’ programme poised for 2024 From Raglan Community Arts Council

P

ens, pencils and keyboards are poised for a 2024 writers’ programme. Following on from the successful March pilot pop-up gallery writers’ programme featuring 18 local authors and publishers, the Raglan Community Arts Council is keen to coordinate another series of pop-up book events. Thanks to funding received from Waikato District Council Creative Communities, the programme will promote Wh.ingaroa writers, illustrators and publishers combined with workshop talks, events and artists in residence programme at the Old School. The aspiration now is to create a hub and further networking opportunities, enabling a broader range of related events to be run throughout the year. The 2024 programme will provide an opportunity for local authors, illustrators and publishers to display and promote work on a regular basis. It is also an opportunity for

Raglan residents and visitors to enjoy, engage with and buy local books, and meet local wordsmiths. A hui on Wednesday 5 December, 6.30pm at the Old School will provide an opportunity to brainstorm ideas to shape the future of this

exciting new series of pop-up programmes and discuss how this may develop. All writers, illustrators, publishers, bloggers and poets interested in coming together as a central writing hub to support and connect with each other are welcome.

In the meantime, if you are an author, publisher or illustrator and are keen to find out more about the 2024 writers’ pop-up programme, contact the event coordinator Jacqueline at Jacqueline@raglanartscentre. co.nz.

Biennial Flower Show a blooming success by Janine Jackson

R

aglan Horticultural Society’s Flower Show was awash with the colours and fragrances of locallygrown flowers and vegetables. Society president Geoff Pownall says the change in date from August to November provided gardening enthusiasts with an opportunity to present different flowers and vegetables. "It was a very successful show with 144 entries and close to 100 visitors during the day." The flower categories included roses, sweet peas, poppies, geraniums and pelargoniums. Vegetables were represented by brassica, root vegetables and legumes. Entrants were judged on their gardening and creative abilities with sections for floral art and a children’s section. Floral art categories included miniature, beachcomber art, flowers and foliage, and native plant decorations. The youngsters competed for best sand saucer, aqua jar and miniature garden on a dinner plate.

Raglan Karioi Trail T

he annual Raglan Karioi Trail event is soon approaching. We hear from a few more past participants who thoroughly recommend the experience. 2023 marks the 10th and I’m told, the last year for Francois Mazet’s epic trail run up and over and up and over the beauty that is Mt Karioi It’s impossible to explain what a special experience this event is - the trail is hard, it will push you to your limits, the rewards however are endless. Native bush, views to Taranaki (on a clear day) and the rugged west coastline that sits perfectly against the twisted jungle-like foliage. You’ll get a bit muddy, sweaty and sore. And after all of that, when you pop out the bush and onto the farm, you’ll hear the beat of the village, that’s when the smile will begin to grow, where stories are being shared,

arrivals cheered and family and new friends celebrate the challenges of the adventure over beers and BBQ. Something tells me this year those celebrations will take on a whole new level! If you haven’t done it yet and want to, if you did it and haven’t been back for a bit, if you do it every year - don’t miss this one Rachel Brown Love the energy of this event, not to mention the terrain and the team! Best adventure out there, for all levels. Dawn Tuffery. Winner of the G.J. Gardner Homes 24km in 2015. As a long time supporter and volunteer of this fun race I thought it was time to have a crack as see what all the talk is about. If it is half the fun that happens at the finish line it'll be a great event. Really looking forward to it. Ron Rumbal – Ruakupe local – long time RKT’s volunteer with his wife Cat.

O

n December 2nd and 3rd, Raglan residents can see the stunning documentary Pacific Mother at the Raglan Old School Arts Centre. The film follows freediving couple Sachiko Fukumoto and William Trubridge navigate maternity systems for the birth of their first child, which awakens in them a fierce realization about the lack of choice many parents face. Director Katherine McRae follows Sachiko as she connects

with ocean women from around the Pacific, from Hawai’i, Tahiti, the Cook Islands, and Aotearoa New Zealand. Through their interwoven stories, the film explores the importance of community, reclaiming traditional birthing knowledge and the connection between caring for the planet and nurturing both parents and their children. The film won multiple awards at the 2023 Doc Edge Film Festival including Best New Zealand Feature, Best New Zealand Director, Best New Zealand Editing, Best New Zealand

Cinematograph. The film will also be under Oscar consideration for 2024. Entertainment reviewer Graeme Tuckett wrote in Stuff NZ, “Pacific Mother is a stunning – stunning – looking film, with many minutes of undersea photography in crystal clear Pacific waters… See this film on a big screen, if you get the chance. It really is a bit special.” It’s exciting to have the film come to the big screen here in Raglan. The film is produced by Migiwa Ozawa a long-time resident of Raglan and Titirangi.

She will attend the showing at Raglan Old School Arts Centre along with local midwives for a special QandA. There will be no door sales, presale only. Tickets are selling fast so book now! If you miss out, you can request to host your own screening in your own community through the website: https://www.pacificmotherfilm. com/watch/ Follow @pacificmotherfilm on Instagram and FB for more news and showings of this stunning birthing film.

Whāingaroa Youth Movement presents: Case of the Missing Meaning from Whāingaroa Youth Movement

W

e invite you to join us in the Bush Park, Wainui Reserve for ‘Case of the Missing Meaning’, a whodunit by Whāingaroa Youth Movement. ‘Case of the Missing Meaning’ is a dance inquiry into our breakdowns and break throughs. We investigate our collective pain, the ebb and flow of life and how relationships and change can challenge us. We are always looking for meaning; it’s a search that never stops. We get drawn down paths where we can’t connect in the same ways, where we can no longer look out for one another, then a deep disconnect invades our existence. Isolation brings layers of complexity, and perspectives distort. We learn to take time and make as much space as we need, for who we are. Then find a way to embrace

our humanness, accept the breaking and rebuilding of connection through kindness and forgiveness towards ourselves, whānau and friends. This is what helps to bring us home, reminding us we are better - together. Whāingaroa Youth Movement (WYM est. 2003) is celebrating 20 years of dance making, created with and directed by Patti Mitchley. We are a group of 70 local youth, aged 6-17 years and we love to move. We are about being together; to dance, create and explore ideas collectively. Our performance work is about who we are, where we live and how we see the world. BYO seating. What: Case of the Missing Meaning Where: Bush Park, Wainui Reserve When: 11am Saturday, December 2nd Cost: $5 entry (cash only) Duration: 45min
