Cabinetmaker turns his hand to climbing walls
Local cabinetmaker Roger Woolston is scaling new heights in the business world.
At his workshop on the โdownโ side of Raglanโs Park Drive, alongside the panelbeating and engineering workshops, business is definitely looking up as he and a small team of workers go about building massive themed panels for one of Aucklandโs Extreme Edge rock climbing centres โ similar to those he tackled two years ago for the same Marlin Cafe & Grill. WeatherMap - New Zealand weather forecasts http://www.weathermap.co.nz/?p=raglan He says the addition of Climbzoneโs novelty panels at Hamiltonโs Extreme Edge has doubled the turnover of the company which is now starting to talk not just Auckland but also exports.

Bay residents kick up a stink over $17,000 wastewater bills
โOur rates are outrageous enough already,โ Te Tuhi Road resident Jenny Ritchie told the Chronicle last week in reaction to the projected cost, which was revealed in a recent report to the Waikato District Councilโs water and facilities committee. She said Whale Bay landowners paid big bucks even without council water or sewerage services for their properties. โWe pay a lot of rates (just) to have a view.โ She wondered how their share of the proposed low-pressure wastewater system โ estimated by council consultants Ecoflow at about $17,148 per property โ could possibly be added on to property ownersโ already onerous financial obligations. Another Whale Bay resident, Jo Gibbs, said it was โnot fairโ to lump such huge financial costs onto longtime residents who generally were not wealthy but whose property values have skyrocketed over time.
owner Bernie Brown told the Chronicle the problem was a historical one, dating back to poor planning when the original 1965 subdivision allowed for 750-800 square metre sections with not enough room for effluent fields.
โWeโre not wealthy people,โ he said. โWe bought long ago when we were young surfie guys and have seen our rates quadrupled.โ Bernie reckoned his land cost him about $2000 in 1969 but now had a value around $600,000. โIโll have to leave,โ he said. โItโs not sustainable for me because I own three titles out here.โ He said 10 years of discussions between the council and the local community had come up with no better solution than the proposed low pressure wastewater system, which would discharge to the existing Raglan wastewater treatment plant. Currently, he explained, most Whale Bay residents had septic tanks, with waste going from soil to bedrock to ground water to streams and finally into the ocean. Some more recent residents had installed a threestage polishing system with an irrigation field, but Environment Waikato staff said that process had a limited life anyway.
She questioned whether owners of properties yet to be developed would also ultimately cop a share of what she termed a crippling cost for a basic necessity.
โWe are polluting,โ admitted Bernie, who is conscious of protecting water quality at Raglanโs world-renowned surf breaks. โEveryone has a responsibility to be connected to the reticulation system.โ
Longtime resident and Karioi Nursery
He said Whale Bay residents were now

โanxiously awaitingโ council consultation on the proposal. The $2,124,364 estimated all-up cost is based on connecting up the 120 lots zoned urban living. That includes not only the likes of Te Tuhi and Calvert Roads but also โ closer to Raglan town โ Earls Place and Upper Wainui Road. The public toilets at the Whale and Manu Bay reserves would also link up to the new system at a cost to the council, and in the end ratepayers, of about $65,000. Despite having made submissions to council over the years through Whaanga Coast Ratepayers Association in an effort to get the โover-the-topโ costs down to a more manageable level, Bernie maintained the current proposal was far from โon a parโ โ as some people thought โ with a townie connecting to sewerage for a couple of thousand dollars.

Whale Bay property owners are aghast at the prospect of having to cough up more than $17,000 each to meet an estimated $2.2 million capital cost of getting rid of their septic tanks forever and hooking into the existing Raglan wastewater treatment plant in Wainui Road.

Through โno fault of our ownโ things were much more complex for Whale Bay, he said. Ongoing maintenance costs would also have a big impact on rates in the bay. The recent council report on the issue, presented by water and facilities general manager Richard Bax, estimated the annual operating cost of the system at $70 per property, each of which was expected to have a new storage tank and an associated pump. The council has previously investigated but discounted for Whale Bay both local treatment of sewage and a conventional gravity wastewater collection system. Edith Symes

Surf Life Saving celebrate โtoweringโ achievement
Raglanโs new surf lifesaving tower is due to be opened early July and it promises to provide a much better space for lifeguards to operate from. At a total cost of $180,000 the new tower was made possible by grants from WEL Energy Trust ($35,000), Surf Lifesaving Northern Zone ($47,000) along with local support from Raglan Lions ($5,000). โWe raised the rest of the total ourselves over four years. When I look back at it, we just kept plugging away with fundraising but now that the building is sitting there and almost complete, I can see that what we achieved, for a small club, is pretty amazingโ, says Bernice Richards, Chairperson of the Trust Waikato Raglan Surf Life Saving Club. She puts the remarkable fundraising effort down to a small club with a very big heart and a really supportive community. Local Kaumatua, Sean Ellison,
has blessed the site and now all that is left is some finishing touches to the building before the official opening which will include past and present members of the club along with invited guests. โThe building programme has gone along really well with work on the site commencing after Easter. We think the design, with the curved roof-line blending into the bank fits in well on the beach and matches the contour of the clubrooms aboveโ, says Bernice. The club was very grateful for the fine job local builders Rob Gillard and Mark Fitzgerald did on the construction of the tower. Mike Goodison designed the building and local roofer Nathan Taranaki generously donated the roof materials. โThat felt like a turning point for usโ, says Bernice. Now the tower is settled and will be in operation by the start of the season in October, the next project is to bring power supply down from the main club, something Bernice says will make the space much more comfortable for the guards on duty.
โWe looked at solar power as an option but it wasnโt going to stack up and produce enough power for our needsโ. Along with funding for the tower project, WEL Energy Trust and Raglan Lions also gave money toward the purchase of a new IRB (Inflatable Rescue Boat). A new motor for one of the boats was donated to the club by State Insurance, who celebrated 100 years doing business in New Zealand by giving a motor to every surf lifesaving club in the country. Raglan surf guards perform almost as many rescues as their counterparts at notorious Piha Beach, north of Auckland. This is something that might come as a bit of a โsurpriseโ to many, says Bernice. โOur guards work 100 hours on average per season, actively patrolling the beach. When you compare this with the average guard patrol time of about 25 hours per season at Piha, you can see how dedicated our members areโ. The public are welcome to attend the official opening of the tower at 10.30 am on Sunday July 3. Sue Russell
Council doubles downtown rents
Raglan businesses may be hurting from the hard times but that hasnโt stopped the Waikato District Council in some cases doubling the rents on old harbour board land in the townโs CBD. The hikes mean the amount paid by lessees of 9 Bow Street โ site of the building housing the Yot Club and Surfing New Zealandโs offices โ rises from $12,075 to $24,000 a year while the annual rent on adjacent 11 Bow St, where kebabs and icecream bar Raglan Roll-Up operates, goes from $14,175 to $29,500. There are also big rent rises for three blocks of old harbour board leasehold land in nearby Wi Neera Street, some of it vacant land earmarked for development and another the site of the Raglan police station. The increases were revealed in a report to Tuesdayโs Raglan Community Board meeting, where board members questioned their timing โ with chairman Rodger Gallagher suggesting it would have been better to put the rents up โout of a recessionโ. But water and facilities general manager Richard Bax said the seven-year term was up, and ran board members through a rent review process which includes up to two independent valuations and negotiation and agreement with the lessees. He said rent reviews for five of the nine leases in downtown Raglan had now been completed, and the rest were currently being negotiated. Mr Gallagher said on his website that โwhile it is the leaseholders who will be paying the increases at this time, when shop rents come up for review it is likely the increases will be passed on to retailersโ.

Timely arrest in Raglan sexual assault
A man will appear in court today in relation to the alleged sexual assault of a woman in her Raglan home on Friday night. Detective Sergeant Mata John of the Ngaruawahia CIB said good initial investigative work by local Raglan officers enabled investigators to secure a timely arrest over the weekend. โA mother had been home with her daughter and gone to bed when she noticed someone next to her that she initially thought was her partner. โShe quickly established it wasnโt and put up a struggle after which the offender fled the house and she raised the alarm. Local staff responded and within a quick period of time we were able to identify a person of interest who was arrested yesterday.โ The 19-year-old man was held in custody overnight and will appear in the Hamilton District Court today facing sexual assault charges.

St John honours Raglan member
It was a proud moment for Raglan Resident Sue Gilshnan when she was honoured at the St John Investiture ceremony in Wellington on 12 June and made an Officer of the Order of St John. The Honours are sanctioned by Her Majesty The Queen, Sovereign Head of the Most Venerable Order of St John. The Honours presentations were made by the head of St John in New Zealand, the GovernorGeneral His Excellency Hon Sir Anand Satyanand GNZM QSO. Susan Gilshnan has contributed over 30 years to St John in Raglan where, as an Appointed Area Committee Member, her experience, local knowledge, promotional and fundraising efforts are appreciated and considered invaluable. Sue also served as a Volunteer Ambulance Officer, and for 16 years was Senior Control Officer in the Midland Regional Operations Centre until it relocated to North Com in Auckland. She is currently employed Susan Gilshnan and the Governor-General Sir Anand Satyanand as Workshop Administrator for Central Region. St John has its own honours system. It confers membership of the Order of St John on individuals who New Zealand: to prevent and relieve enhance the health and well-being of have acted conspicuously in carrying out its mission in sickness and injury, and to act to people of all races and creeds.
Raglan Roosters juggernaut rolls on
The โRaglan Roostersโ (Raglan International Football Club) returned triumphant after a dominant 5 nil victory over C.T.C. Aviation at last Sundayโs away game held at Discovery Park in Hamilton.

This elevates The Roosters 10 points clear at the top of the table. A sensationally sunny Sunday provided a perfect backdrop over a slightly soggy and at times difficult pitch. Standard conditions for โDiscoโ Park. Both teams started tentatively
concentrating on ball control until early in the first half an attacking cross from the left made it through the defensive line. The Roostersโ strikers then flooded into the goal box. It is still a mystery who scored as simultaneous contact with the ball was made by โThe Fluffsterโ and โLate asโ Leighton Sugarboots. However, the account had been opened. The momentum kept on building for The Roosters who dominated from there on scoring periodically right up to the final whistle.
Another clean slate for the defence led by The Roostersโ ever vigilant Goalkeeper Erik โThe Invincible Man-tankโ defending the โmuddiestโ part of the grounds (very muddy). C.T.C. Played hard, fair and were gallant in defeat. It was a great game regardless of the outcome and enjoyed by all. For those who like statistics, so far this season... 7 wins/ 0 loss/ 0 draw. Total Goals = 22 for/ 3 against/ +19 goal differential.
The next match is held this Sunday at 1pm at the Te Kopua Domain, Raglan versus Union Latino. There is going to be a BYO BBQ post match (weather permitting) so please feel welcome to come down and support The Roosters at home and join us for some food and drinks. Make sure you bring something to put on the BBQ and anything noisy! COCKADOODLE - DOO! The Colonel

I read the somewhat negative article in June 2nd issue regarding the proposed wind farm at Te Akau. As one of the local โnon-protestersโ I wish to say that most people I talk to regard wind farms as an acceptable option for providing sustainable power. Perhaps thatโs why the protesters are disappointed they didnโt get enough support.

The alternatives seem to have an even greater affect on the environment. Most households are using increasing amounts of electricity to run new technology and I donโt believe we should be opposed to new ways of producing power. After all, the west is where most of the wind comes from. Lesley Stephenson, Raglan
OPINION: A Raglan Rumination by Albert Einsteinlager The Astronauts hit town recently. They left behind numerous signatures on school kidsรข€™ hands and a good number of our womenfolk weak at the knees. OK give the boys their dues. They are physically fit, have some amazing campfire yarns and have three university degrees pinned to their study walls. However their allure goes a lot deeper than this. It boils down to their spunky uniform. Whether it is a fireman, sailor or pilot, we board short blokes will never compete with a dude resplendent in full uniform with accompanying medals. This รข€œjacket jealousyรข€? has prompted me to point
out a few pitfalls surrounding dating an astronaut. It may also help break down the romanticism surrounding รข€œthe uniform.รข€?
#3. รข€œHouston we have a problemรข€? wears a little thin when you have heard it a million times.
#1. Toilet habits. Mr Astronaut has been used to floating around space with zero gravity. Generally his crew is all boys. No toilets. Need I say more. When he gets back to earth the chances of him hitting the bowl each time are very low.
#4. Picture this. You and the handsome Astronaut plus your two adorable children are on a roadtrip to a northern beach. One of the little darlings pipes up from the back. รข€œWhen will we get there?รข€? Mr A pulls the car over, whips out a calculator and proceeds to give you an accurate estimation on how many light years it will take before docking.......... Yawn. Give me a good old fashioned รข€œShut up. Itรข€™s when we get there.รข€?
#2. Mr Astonaut has three degrees but absolutely no culinary skills. Now hang on, I hear you girls cry. This criticism can be levelled at your earth based boys. However those jacket jocks, after years of living out of a packet, are a bit useless on the Sunday roast lamb.
So there you go girls. Food for thought.
OPINION: Lively old layabouts. by Ian McKissack Here is the best thing about being old, it is too late. No point in trying to be the best parent in the world, the chances of becoming Prime Minister are very low. It is time to rest on your oars and drift with the current. However you do need to remember that the river you are on is the river Styx, the final journey. It would be a good time to make any apologies that you need to make, or to write that amazing story, poem or philosophical insight that you always meant to put on paper. Personally I find it a very satisfying time of life. You can indulge the freedom you once had as a child, but even more fully as you donรข€™t have to go to school. And the government pays you good pocket money for being old, you have become a beneficiary. But there is a snag, there are too many of us. The problem will get worse as the number of superannuitants increases with the wonders of medical science keeping us alive longer. A ruthless
government might decide to target us and make retirement far less attractive. Luckily we are quite safe because as a voting block we are very powerful and would quickly bring down such politicians. Winston Peters has let his foxy mind dwell on this fact and used it well. Isnรข€™t democracy wonderful? The most unattractive aspect of getting old is the gradual deterioration of the body, the wrinkled face that looks at back at you from the mirror, leg muscles that twitch at night. And memory, you can remember the painful insult from 20 years ago but not what you came shopping for. Quite a large group of us are fighting against this downward slide. Varying from hardly old to very definitely old we meet at the Old Gospel Hall in Raglan West for light exercise. (Monday, Wednesday or Thursday, 10 รข€“ 11a.m.). You hear very few complaints about ailments but the cheerful social talk level sometimes sounds like the public bar on a busy night. And the exercise isnรข€™t all that gentle. We may be over the hill but its still fun as we drift further down the river.

Green belt a notch above at champs Brooke Bowes may have been โout of her leagueโ at New Zealandโs recent karate champs but that didnโt stop the gutsy green belt getting the better of a black belt โ two levels up โ to make it through to the semifinals. โI was real happy,โ says the Lorenzen Bay teen of her surprise victory. And that despite getting nailed by another black belt during her following fight, suffering bruising and a pulled leg muscle that had to be strapped for a week โ injuries that were not too surprising considering it was bare-fisted knuckle fighting with no protective gloves, headgear or breastpads. Brooke was one of several Raglan competitors in the tough national full-contact open tournament, with eight divisions and five judges, that was hosted by Raglan Kyokushin Karate Club at Hillcrest Highโs sports stadium on the Sunday of Queenโs Birthday Weekend.
nationally last year in Wanganui where she took the title in the colts open division. The pair, along with black belt Mario Gatt, all made it through โ like Brooke โ to their respective semifinals. Edith Symes
Club leader Pablo Rickard describes the annual event, which attracts competitors from all over the country as well as from Australia, as being of a really high standard โ โlike the All Blacks of Kyokushinโ. And he concedes that Brooke was definitely out of her league in having recently turned 17 but, with no other girls her age, being forced to fight โupโ in the womenโs open lightweight division. Brookeโs been attending karate classes in Raglan Town Hall twiceweekly for years now, and competed
