STAYING PR EPA R ED FOR COVID -19 OVER THE HOLIDAYS

We want you and your whānau to be safe and well supported if you need to isolate - being prepared in advance will enable you to make good decisions. We know that Covid-19 is going to be in our community and the best way to be empowered is to prepare ourselves, our whānau and our community with tools and information that will enable us to manage if you or someone in your whānau tests positive for Covid. For our manuhiri/visitors what does holiday preparedness look like? If you are feeling unwell prior to coming to Whāingaroa, please stay home. We are a small town with limited health and medical facilities. If you are holidaying here over the summer and you or someone in your whānau tests positive for Covid-19, what is your plan? Prepare for the unexpected. If you are feeling unwell and have flu like symptoms, call Healthline immediately on 0800 358 5453 If you test positive, are you able to travel back to your home safely to isolate? If you are staying in holiday accommodation like AirBnB check with the provider what provisions they have made should you test positive during your stay - is there an ability to extend your stay? Bring your home doctor’s details with you and your whānau just in case. What does preparedness for all our community look like? Taking care of your health and the health of your whānau - these are only a starter; vaccinate, exercise regularly, walk the beach, dip your toes in the water, swim, walk, laugh, enjoy the company of whānau and friends, smile, eat good kai and importantly don’t be whakamā/shy to reach out if you need awhi/help - you are not alone.

Make a Plan - Decide what happens when someone in your whare tests positive for Covid-19 and needs to isolate. That person must self-isolate for at least 10 days after the last contact or exposure to confirmed cases or until they are told they no longer need to do so, by a public health official. Ideally the positive person should isolate from the rest of the household. The rest of the household will need to be tested. If you are lucky to only have one positive person in your whare, you can prevent transmission by having only ONE person tend to the Covid-19 positive person’s needs. Include in your Plan - What happens for someone in your whare if they test positive for Covid-19. Do you have a room in your whare where whānau can isolate themselves away from others? If it’s not possible to set up a room, create separate zones so they’re away from shared spaces such as the lounge and kitchen Coordinate with whānau/friends to have another whare where whānau can go to safely isolate Set the Tikanga/Guidelines - Decide on what the tikanga is for your whare so everyone understands what needs to happen if you or someone in your whare tests positive for Covid-19. • Talk with your whānau or if you live alone, speak to close friends or reach out to your neighbours, we all need to support each other • Make sure that people visiting know what to do if they are supporting you to safely isolate at home e.g text or message before they arrive, beep from the gate, stay in their car etc • Put up a sign on your front door, set up a table outside the front door with sanitiser, a QR code or register Prepare your Whānau - Prepare a checklist and make sure whānau/friends/support people understand your planning and have a copy of your checklist.

Prepare your whare/home - Think about how to set up your whare to minimise spread. If you don’t have enough room inside your whare, what are your options? An outside room, a caravan or tent set up and made into a comfortable space with all the necessary supplies Prepare your Pataka/Supplies - make sure you have plenty of kai/food in case you need to isolate at home, have enough for 14 days. • Kai, fresh fruit and vegetables • Have lots of fluid, water, broths, ice blocks, kawakawa tea etc • Baby supplies • Pet food • Hygiene products • Medical and cleaning supplies • Sanitizer, masks • Have prepared kai like soup and stews in the freezer so it is easy to heat without a lot of preparation It is important to be connected, make your plan with your whānau, your friends, your support people. If you are feeling unwell or have flu-like systems please get tested or call the Covid-19 Helpline to talk about how you are feeling.

hen erosion threatened to drag Raglan’s surf life saving tower into the sea at the end of winter, the club had to quickly come up with a ‘Plan B’ for the busy summer season rescue operations.

Coastal erosion and rising sea levels along Ngārunui Beach in Raglan is nothing new. Elephant Rock at the north end of the beach, now completely submerged in sand was, until recently, a popular place for children to leap from into the moat at its base. Club president Daniel Wilson says ‘Plan B’ has been evolving as quickly as the tide shifts sand, exposes rocks and moves rips to new spots on the beach. “We’re not setting up flags where we were last season. We’ve had to move quite a bit further north to accommodate the beach change. The challenge we are having is how we patrol the beach and we still in the early phases of what works best and what we need to do to make it work better.” At one point in the erosion saga, one of the tower’s supporting beams had been cut to release it from its concrete footing in order to save the tower from being taken out to sea. Not long after, the concrete foundation was taken by the tide leaving the tower intact. Daniel says the club thought they might get another summer out of the tower and had done a bit of maintenance to get it back up to scratch. “We did a fair bit of maintenance on the tower to then get to the end of winter and go – mmm, we don’t have that confidence anymore. It makes it hard to plan for what’s going to happen.” The Raglan club is not alone in its battle to beat erosion, New Zealand surf life-saving clubs have been fighting to protect their facilities for many years. The club at Sunset Beach, in Port Waikato, moved three times as 50 metres of beach was lost to erosion in the past decade. Advice the club received from the Waikato District Council is in order to future proof the tower they will need it to portable. A rented portacom building situated near the toilets has provided a temporary fix but without the elevation of the tower, patrols have been split with a beach patrol and a tower patrol operating from the club house.

The club are looking at various scenarios for how to best patrol the beach and Daniel says the asphalt pad where the portacom is may not be the ideal location. To provide more flexibility in how they patrol the beach, Daniel says they are also investigating using a trailer with a structure fixed to it to provide elevation or making a more permanent patrol station at the club house. “We’re still working out what the best solution is before we put an application forward. We want to be sure what we apply for is the most suitable thing.” EARLY SEASON FOR PAID LIFEGUARDS Raglan Surf Life Saving at Ngārunui Beach may have had to change the way it patrols the beach, but rescuing swimmers in peril is still high on their agenda. Patrols for paid lifeguards started early for the club this year after a spate of drownings and near-misses in November prompted Surf Life Saving Northern Region to pull forward the start date for weekday patrols on several key beaches, including Ngārunui. In the first weekend of Level 2, a low-tide rip sparked a mass rescue of 14 people at the popular surf beach after rips on either side of the swimming flags dragged people out to sea. A volunteer life guard himself, Daniel says the strength of the outgoing tide caught swimmers unaware and it was a case of bad luck rather than bad management. “Those mass rescues are as much about the beach changes as having eyes on. The way the beach is at the moment it speeds from the north and the south into one strong rip. It has a strong surge, and the rip comes and goes and moves around as the tide goes out. HISTORY The club began informal operations in 1972 when a group of enthusiastic locals decided to patrol the Kopua beach. In July 1973, the Raglan Surf Life Saving Patrol was formed, with Ces Gaukrodger as the first president. By February 1974, they had 17 qualified members and two instructors. The portacom may feel like a step backwards but it is a far cry from the tent that housed the lifeguards on patrol. Equipment was stored in a shed at the wharf and transported to the beach every day. At the time the Wainui reserve was farmland and the equipment was transported either down the Bryant Home track or 3km along the beach.

By 1979, the club had put up premises on reserve land near the harbour entrance. While not the best place to patrol the beach from, many a boatie can be thankful for the club’s location as lifeguards could respond quickly to incidents on the bar. With the development of the Wainui Reserve, the club began planning for a building to be constructed on the reserve. In 2001, work began in earnest to fundraise for the club when erosion occurring made it impossible to get down the beach due to rock being uncovered. By October 2002 the new club was officially opened by the Waikato District Mayor Peter Harris. The original tower was built on wooden poles in the 1990s and was replaced in 2011 by the recently demolished tower. The tower cost $180,000 and consisted of a concrete block basement for first-aid supplies and emergency treatment, and was financed by four years of local fundraising and grants from WEL Energy Trust, Surf Life Saving Northern Region, Raglan Lions Club and Trust Waikato. VOLUNTEERS Volunteer lifeguards take over patrols from the paid guards on the weekends. The Raglan club has a pool of around 70 volunteers, including 40 lifeguards who patrol the beach on the weekends. The majority come from Raglan and Hamilton but some come from as far away as Auckland.

• There were 74 drowning deaths and an additional 202 hospitalisations. • 29 children aged between 5 and 14 were hospitalised – the highest number on record. • The sea was the most common place for hospitalisation incidents (37%), followed by swimming pools (21%) and rivers (17%).

As with any organisation that relies on volunteers, recruiting rookies is vital to the club. This season they welcome three newcomers. Covid has delayed their ability to complete their certificate but they will be ready to join the patrols this summer. To gain lifeguard qualifications rookie lifeguards have to swim 400-metre pool in under nine minutes, undertake two tube rescues in the ocean and pool, run 200-metres, swim 200-metres swim, run 200-metres in the surf, sit a 50-question theory test and complete a first aid and CPR course. HOW YOU CAN HELP Raglan Surf Life Saving chairperson Sarah Bailey says the best way to show support locally is to drop off kai for the lifeguards on the weekend. “They get really hungry on patrol and they don’t often get a break to go and make something for lunch. They would love some baking. They don’t think about eating unless it there in from of them. aglan cafe operators are asking for patience and understanding from patrons over the summer holidays while they get to grips with the intricacies of the new Covid traffic light system. Most eateries around town confirmed early this month they’d opted into the system – some a little reluctantly – and that they were committed to minimising any delays at their doors. All the same, diners needed to be prepared for it taking a little time to get them organised, Lisa James of Orca Eatery & Bar told the Local Rag – time to not only scan the Covid tracer app as before, but now to have their vaccine passes checked as well. Patrons should ensure that all in their party had their passes on hand, she added, and be aware too that cafes were entitled to ask for photo ID. “The onus is on business owners to make sure you are who you say you are.” Lisa said the prospect of turning away some customers “does not sit well with any of us” in the industry. “We are in this business because we love to host guests … to exclude people and check up on customers goes against the nature of our business.”

But neither could local cafes risk not opting into the new scheme, she said. They’d then be forced into solely contactless sales at Orange/Red levels – with little if any Government support while taking only 5 to 20 percent of their “normal” income. Orca had been around for 14 years and she did not want to see it fail now. Meanwhile The Shack’s Justin Thomson last week described the traffic light protective framework as the only way to have a “near normal” summer, urging all-round kindness, patience and understanding to make the system work. “As we move into the orange stage we can only welcome vaccinated people,” he said. “There is a requirement for all our customers, staff and suppliers to scan in with the Covid tracer app and allow us to sight and verify their vaccine passes.” But he and his team also wanted people to know that there were “big smiling faces hiding behind our masks, waiting to serve you”. Across the road at Wyld, co-owner Paul Gittings reckoned the choices were to opt into the Government vaccine pass system “or to close down”. He asked that diners “be patient with the team … cut them a bit of slack” in these trying times. A few staffers among the 20 or so on the books at Wyld had been lost by early December because of

the “no jab no job” policy, and Paul had also lost time during Covid restriction levels to start his run-up to summer. As a result he’d been busy “compacting” preparations, including training up replacement staff. Out of town on Wainui Rd, Rock-it Kitchen’s Cherie Nathan – one of two families who bought the business just six months ago – was also urging diners to be kind and respectful. Staff have a lot to deal with under the traffic light system, she said. “We’re all in a new position.” Cherie too needed to train up a few more staff members early this month to bring the total back to around a dozen for the busy summer season. But Rock-it – like others – could still offer contactless takeaways to those without vaccine passes, Cherie pointed out, as it had to all its patrons during alert level restrictions. People could conveniently order and pay through the Regulr app, she added. “We used it throughout level 3.” Back downtown at La La Land, Monika Suchecka was adamant “we cannot afford to close” so would be checking vaccine passes as well as offering ‘click and collect’ to those without passes. “I will try my best to make everyone happy.” Opposite at George’s Beach Club, owner Dean Teddy was also happy to do contactless sales at the gate, while

making it clear his first obligation was to diners inside. With understaffing a problem in these Covid times, the cafe has been unable to open as much as usual, he said, so contactless orders could only be done during the less busy times. Further up Bow Street, Iso Cafe & Bistro said staff would strive to “make everything happen as normally as possible”, to give patrons a good all-round experience despite Covid restrictions; while Raglan Harbour View Hotel was looking at the possibility of having a designated staff member on the door to check vaccine passports. It would be “pretty unfair” for all staff to have to deal with that, duty manager Mike Anderson said. Helen Rowling of The Wharf Kitchen and Bar was also very reluctant about “having my staff policing our customers”. While complying with the traffic light system she’d keep things simple by having only enough seating “based on my staff situation” and would offer a smaller, concise menu using plenty of fresh produce. “We will not overcomplicate things at this emotionally charged time,” she vowed. *ULO’s Kitchen early this month posted on Facebook that it made “the hardest decision” to only do takeaways “in these difficult times”.

We are actually just starting out our sixth summer now. It’s amazing how much support the Raglan community has shown, so we’d like to thank everyone for that. We love teaching and sharing something we’re passionate about with our students. And we’ve had phenomenal feedback as well - we’ve become the top-rated surf school in New Zealand. It’s nice to know that our students are having such a positive experience. Who’s involved with the instructing? There are three of us that run Green Wave together: Zennor Wernham, Wes Rogers and Bing Lyons. Between the three of us we have over 30 years coaching experience. We also have a team of talented local surfers and former Raglan Surf Academy students helping us out through the busy months. People say how difficult it is to surf but what do you say to those who have never surfed and want to give it a go? Will they get up? Everyone stands up on our lessons. We actually offer a stand-up guarantee or your money back, and so far we have a 100% success rate. We don’t really put any pressure on our students. Sometimes they might feel a little nervous before we start, but we keep everything fun and relaxed. Before they know it, they’re already up and riding a wave. With free photos to prove it!

Do you offer any kind of kids camp / summer holiday programs? We are running kids camps through the school holidays! It’s a great way to introduce kids to surfing in a fun, safe environment. We offer weekly camps as well as daily drop ins to fit everyone’s schedule. You offer daily lessons. Is it always at the same time? Our lesson schedule is based on the best tides and conditions for each day. This ensures that our students surf at the safest time and the easiest tide for learning. With the water getting busier and busier, knowing the rules and practising safety in the water is crucial here on the west coast. The main theme of the Surfers Code in Raglan: Respect the environment, the ocean and most importantly, each other.

I’m not sure why my son is drawn to the turnips with such vivacity; perhaps he is living some sort of anime fantasy reality and the radishes turn into flying castles?! Regardless, it has taken me to dizzynew-turnip-heights in the kitchen.

Turnips have featured on the dinner table now in many forms - I have roasted some with other local veggies to make big hearty dinner salads. I stuffed a chicken with a turnip, lemon and herbs; that was good! Today I am sharing a simple quick pickle that you can whack on the side of any meal at this time of year. Would go well with enchilada, or fried fish, perhaps just eating it while drinking a cold glass of white wine… enjoy.

And if you can get a large laden teaspoon of local honey in there then go for it! You can tumble these gems in a large glass jar or bowl and serve immediately or stash in the fridge for an hour two to make cold and crunchy.

ummer has arrived in Whāingaroa, and it is the place to be. With events, excellent restaurants, beautiful nature and fantastic surf all in this small town, the summer schedule is jam-packed. However, we all know this year has been slightly different to all previous, so let’s take a look at what’s going on in town this summer.

New year’s eve is always a big night in Raglan; with the Yot club and other venues serving tunes, there’s something on for everyone. This year things may look a little different, as unfortunately the annual firework display and parade have been canceled. We thought about what the perfect day of holiday in Raglan looks like, with a good taste of all that’s on offer! Firstly we recommend grabbing a coffee to start the day off right. Raglan now has three independent local coffee roasters, and all are worth a try. There are plenty of excellent cafes dotted around town also serving breakfast, so the morning options are endless. If the heat is hitting town already, one could go straight to the water to swim or surf at the Kopua, Ngarunui or Manu Bay. Kayaking is also an option, with paddling over to the pancake rocks being a beautiful underrated day trip. Otherwise, there’s plenty of options on land, such as walking Bridal Veil Falls or Mount

The town has something for those from anywhere and everywhere, all ages and interests. With so much on offer-get creative with your days! Maybe hike Mt Karioi and finish the day with Fish and Chips at the Wharf or Grab breakfast at one of our local eateries before heading on a surf lesson. This year has been a hard one for all so supporting local businesses is more important than ever. Residents of Whāingaroa know just how many awesome things the town has to offer and this makes for the perfect time to try something new-especially with all of the awesome new businesses that have joined us in the last year. utside appearances are definitely deceiving when it comes to the YOT Club.

In the harsh light of day, the exterior walls are shabby and pinned with community notices for yoga classes, movies, markets, music lessons and other local events. It’s a good place to go and find out what’s happening around town. And punters looking for a Raglan nightlife scene can check out the latest live act headlining at the iconic music venue affectionally known as the Yottie. It’s just as unassuming inside, with a bar that runs nearly the length of the building leading to a performance space/mosh pit at the Bow Street end of the venue. A stage is crammed into one end of this space, and posters and large photos of previous gigs embellish the interior walls. What happens after dark is where you’ll find the heart and soul of the YOT Club and that’s pretty special according to owner Andy Meek. “It might be small but there’s a huge amount of passion that comes from the performers and the audience.” Andy has definitely made his mark on the Raglan music scene. It was something that previous owner Pete Coddington was eager to see happen when he handed over the keys to Andy in 2013. “Pete wanted to take it to the next level. He wanted someone like me with the experience to take it on.” Andy came to the YOT Club with 11 years as owner of K’Road live music mainstays Ink Bar and its sister bar Coherent under his belt.

He still operates Ink Bar, which is known in the dance scene for featuring top DJs from New Zealand and around the world. Coherent no longer exists but it was known in its day for showcasing live rock bands. In the pint-sized YOT Club, Andy has managed to combine the two types of acts very successfully. With a reputation for getting rowdy, rock and reggae gigs and DJs at the top of their game, the club is legendary around the world. It features in the travellers’ guidebook the Lonely Planet and in May this year, to celebrate New Zealand Music Month, the Yottie was named in the Herald as one of New Zealand’s best live music venues to visit. A live music fan from way back, Andy still remembers what inspired him into the business in the first place. “Whenever I get the chance, and there are bands I can’t book here, I’m still travelling to see bands I want to see.” As well as catering to what’s hot on the music scene, Andy tries to book his favourite bands and over the years he’s hosted Kiwi rock legends Head Like a Hole and Regurgitator, to name but a few. “Regurgitator are my favourite band. Me and my mate toured them through New Zealand so having them play at the Yottie was something else,” he says. One of the club’s top acts My Baby hit the stage in January 2014 and they’ve been a drawcard ever since. The Dutch-New Zealand trio had not long released their debut album Loves Voodoo! and they’ve continued to come back every year to headline at the YOT Club. “My Baby are superstars now. They won’t be back this summer because of Covid. But they’ll keep coming back every summer.”

Many of the band members become personal friends, with Andy offering accommodation at the family home; one of the drawcards for the performers, other than playing at the Yottie, is being able to spend some time in Raglan. The YOT Club has also been the breeding ground of many a young local musician with local high flyer Muroki cutting his live performance teeth with his band Cloak Bay at the Yottie. “They did their first ten gigs here,” he says. “For sheer passion, some of Muroki’s gigs have been incredible.” The popular Sunday Sessions which herald the beginning of summer in Raglan, often feature local DJs getting a taste for a live performance bigger than their living room. Andy’s there for nearly every performance and he’s proud of what the YOT Club has to offer, even though some gigs barely break even and the Covid lockdowns have hit hard. “After the first lockdown (March 2020) both my businesses bounced back but this one’s been really horrific.” But Andy’s not been sitting idle all this time, there are funding opportunities he is looking into and now the lockdown has been lifted he’s hard at work planning and confirming the gigs for the summer. There are already some top acts lined up for the end of the year, including top UK drum and bass duo Document One on December 27, Hamilton sixpiece Knights of the Dub Table on the 28th, Dunedin five-piece Summer Thieves on the 29th and eminent nightclub DJ Greg Churchill and Waikato old-school, hip-hop DJs KRS3 on New Year’s Eve. How did your interest in property development begin? I’ve always had an interest in architecture which expanded during my time in London, working initially as a carpenter before starting my own company. Our first project was a 60sqm Victorian Terrace cottage in Weybridge, Surrey. The house had been in the same family for 60 years and had its last make over in the 70’s. The main challenge was making such a small space a workable environment for a young family or professional couple to live in. We achieved this by removing walls, utilising every nook and letting in as much light as possible. Once back in New Zealand, my interest turned towards new builds with a sub-dividable section at the Mount. ‘A Cute House’ was our first project using Red Architecture and it went on to win several ADNZ Awards. We then continued with a development of 4 townhouses on Marine Parade, before returning to the Waikato and doing several developments in Tamahere. With Red Architecture, our projects have been lucky enough to win a total of 8 ADNZ regional awards and 6 national awards. You own the Moonlight Bay house that Red Architecture was recently awarded for. Given it was a tricky steep section how did you find the project? Moonlight Bay was definitely one of our more challenging sites. Our previous coastal development was on an easy to access flat site at the Mount, so we had to be very dynamic here. There were many challenges, the most basic of which was not being able to have a skip or anywhere to park for the duration of the build. All

these were overcome with extra hard work from our builders, lots of imaginative solutions and lots of walking. You have a new project in Rangitahi, Raglan. What are you creating there and why? We wanted to uphold a strong design approach, that takes into consideration the wider community. Our hub of 11 houses and 1 commercial unit, are designed to engage in the surroundings making the most of the stunning vistas, whilst remaining sympathetic to neighbouring developments. With the inclusion of footpaths and elected landscaping we’re wanting to achieve a connected space which endorses the Rangitahi ethos and creates a relaxed, easy living vibe with access to all of Raglan’s raw magnetism. Rangitahi encourages connection with neighbourhood through design guidelines. What are your thoughts around the balance between connection and privacy? Good design will always take in considerations for the wider community and I think it’s great that this is being stipulated in Rangitahi. To be able to walk with neighbours through shared pathways, then retreat to our own areas brings the best of both worlds. It creates space for us to invest in our community. Do you believe that a smaller footprint is the way forward for contemporary living? There’s definitely a trend towards smaller spaces which seems to reflect people’s desire to live more simply. Homes in which to retreat at the weekend, with less maintenance and easy access to

amenities, frees up a greater sense of downtime. How has and will the pandemic affect building projects for you and others with builds in Raglan? The pandemic has placed a huge strain on business in NZ and globally. As, like most, we’ve had to adjust our timelines and are prepared to be more generous to unforeseen factors which may affect us. Supply delays will require some creativity to keep us on track but hopefully

the new traffic light system should keep the building sites open and our workforce healthy and mobile. What are you honestly most looking forward to in 2022? Firstly, like the majority of New Zealand, a summer holiday. Then we’re really excited to get the Rangitahi development underway, and seeing what we can achieve there. e recently released 10 new sections on the peninsula located within The Plateau: the heart of Rangitahi (also known as stage 3). The Plateau is the most elevated area on the peninsula, with views of the surrounding farmland, coastline, and harbour.

In 2020 we sold more than 60 sections in this area; titles have now been issued, and building has commenced. The entire stage is made up of 90 sections in total. There is a small village area made up of commercial and residential development with adjoining urban reserves, and we are currently designing some recreational features such as a tennis court and playground to be built there in the future. There will also be some small and larger commercial spaces developed including a childcare facility. The Plateau is closely connected to the water’s edge and other stages via our open space network of walking tracks and footpaths. The area is surrounded with green space, some of which has been planted with regenerative native planting to create interesting

views and maintain the area. We have planted community orchards across the peninsula in pockets of ‘in-between’ land that are fully accessible and open to the community to use. The 10 sections we have recently released are north facing and have a beautiful outlook of Rangitahi and the Raglan area and snippets of the harbour. Construction of this release of sections is planned to begin in May 2022 with titles for the sections anticipated to issue around Dec 2022. Rangitahi is one of the most unique developments in New Zealand and people from all walks of life are interested in being part of the community we are establishing here. We have gathered a lot of interest in the sections over the last few months and don’t expect they will be around for long. Kia ora koutou, It is hard to believe that the end of 2021 is fast approaching, Christmas and New Year once again upon us. Another challenging time with changes that no one anticipated and an end of year where we prepare to live with Covid-19 in 2022 and beyond. Living in a time of uncertainty and change is hard, it is even more important moving forward as a community that we remain connected and empathic. We have fantastic examples of this in action now, our community growers market is a wonderful expression of this, sharing local abundance from growers gardens, their expertise and knowledge shared out amongst our community.

Sharing resources and collaborating are Raglan’s Destination Management Organisation, which manages our local i-Hub and community-focused energy retailer, Raglan Local Energy (RLE), who have entered into an exciting partnership. This will see RLE in the new year operating out of the hub and they will be sponsors of the growers market. Colin Chungs’ Raglan Community Christmas Picnic is another, spreading love to those in need with a little extra festive cheer on Christmas day; these initiatives have been created through collaboration, working together is good for our community wellbeing. For many of us summer time is a wonderful time of year, the fresh tang of salted air, the warmth of the sunshine, watching the kids jetty jumping, walks along the beach and the long awaited opportunity for those who have been apart from loved ones, to finally plan for the holidays and being together. If you are visiting us, please remember that we are a small community with limited resources, bring a little extra patience and understanding, relax and chill out. Hang out on one of our parklets downtown, take a blanket and sit on the grassed islands on Bow Street or take a streetside seat at one of our coffee shops, watch the world go by, talk, laugh and connect. Take time to let traffic cross the one lane car bridge, from both sides! When you see cars backing up toward town or Raglan west, let them through, a couple of minutes waiting to let others go, won’t end the world. I would like to take time to acknowledge community hero’s like Bob MacLeod, community extraordinaire, young at heart and passionate leader who sadly passed during lockdown. He was a strong advocate for the community and his years of service to Raglan in his many roles is sorely missed. A big shout out thank you to all the people and organisations who contribute to making this community a ‘community’, 2021 has been another difficult one but it has also made me appreciate this place even more. Big thanks to the Raglan Community Board, who have put a lot of time and effort into various projects and issues. Thank you to the Raglan Lions, who have made the tough decision not to host our annual Lions New Years Parade. It is the first time in the history of the parade, but given these challenging times it is understandable, thank you for taking care of our community and our visitors. Enjoy this beautiful place that we are blessed to call home; relax, unwind, take some time to pause, breathe and rest. Take some time to think about the year ahead and how we can work together in the new year to support each other. EVERYDAY HEROES BR ING BACK BIODIVERSITY K A R I O I P RO J E C T their boots to restore biodiversity, checking traps on Karioi and surrounding coastline and in their own backyard. Nearly 400 local families now have traps in their own backyard through the Karioi Backyard Hub, while 130 volunteers check more than 120 km of trap lines at least once a month. In the meantime, staff have been working hard to intensify predator control on the maunga, targeting possums, stoats and rats at a landscape scale. In the past year, we’ve installed 500 bait stations across 250 hectares for ground control of predators. With amazing volunteers supporting our rangers to fill these bait stations, we are potentially eliminating the need for future aerial applications of 1080 on Karioi.

s the west coast town of Raglan’s population swells this summer, Waikato Police are urging people to be vigilant to protect themselves and their property this holiday season. January is the busiest month of the year for police in Raglan. On average Raglan records 122 calls for service a month. This rose to 224 calls for service in January of 2021. Theft and burglaries typically increase during the holiday period with cars, rental properties and campsites becoming a frequent target for offenders looking to prey on easily accessible items and valuables left unattended. Nearly half of all victimisations were theft related, with 27 per cent being burglaries and another 20 per cent related to violence offending.

Raglan Constable Alice Cleveland said the best way to protect yourselves from becoming a victim this summer is to lock your homes and vehicles.

Parking in Raglan will be an issue with increased traffic. There are only limited parking spaces for people to use in the main streets of town.

If you’re heading down to the beach, take your valuables with you. Don’t leave items like wallets, phones, cash or valuable items in plain sight in vehicles and if possible use a car alarm or steering wheel lock to secure your vehicle.

Be mindful not to park across driveways, on broken yellow lines, or on parks and reserves without permission.

As more people head to the beaches, traffic on the roads also increases. Police typically see larger volumes of traffic along SH23 which can lead to long queues of traffic. “We ask motorists to be patient and understand that travel times will be longer. If you notice a lot of traffic behind you pull over when you can do so safely and let other traffic past.”

Waikato Police also deal with higher numbers of family harm and alcohol fuelled disorder over the holiday period. No violence is okay, and if you are experiencing violence please know there is help available by contacting police or a partner agency for assistance. A liquor ban is also in place for areas around the central Raglan township, reserve areas and Kopua Domain. With extra police resources being deployed to Raglan, police will be highly visible throughout the summer period.

Drivers should also be expected to be stopped anywhere, anytime and breathtested. • Lock your homes, vehicles and don’t leave valuables unattended in cars, boats or campsites. • Be patient on the roads, pull over to let people pass • Parking maybe an issue, try to carpool or drop people off and park. n 3 December 2021, New Zealand moved into the COVID-19 Protection Framework, also known as the “Traffic Lights”. While under the new framework the freedoms of vaccinated individuals will increase; those who choose not to be vaccinated will find their everyday lives restricted. In an employment law context, the choice to be unvaccinated may also impact on a person’s job. Employers are currently trying to navigate the legal developments and to work out the impact of Traffic Lights for unvaccinated employees. Deciding whether to make vaccinations mandatory in workplaces is also something many employers are considering. The new Traffic Lights anticipates COVID-19 will be in our communities. Depending on whether we are at Red, Orange or Green will determine what businesses can remain open and those that will need to use vaccination certificates to do so. For example, at Orange, if vaccination certificates are not used, all hospitality will be contactless only. Whereas if vaccination certificates are used, there will be no restrictions. The use of vaccination certificates means that not only

those using a business must provide proof of vaccination, but those who work in that business must also do so. This means that employers whose businesses will be impacted by the Traffic Lights will need to make difficult decisions regarding unvaccinated employees. However, it is critical that any decisions are made while still complying with employment law obligations. This includes: acting in good faith, consulting with employees, considering potential redeployment alternatives (such as whether remote working is possible) before making any final decisions to end employment. A mandatory four-week notice period will also apply if an employee loses their job because they are unvaccinated. It is important that businesses are getting good advice, particularly since we are all heading into untested territory regarding the legalities of dismissing someone because of their vaccination status and the required process for doing so. fter a rollercoaster of a winter season that included an invitation to participate in the Winter Games, 15-year-old Txema was selected for the NZ National Development team heading to the Junior World Champs in Switzerland in March 2022. Freestyle snowboarding is terrain-parkfocused – jumps, rails and halfpipe. The level of the international circuit is very high - Txema will need to do as much training and competing in other events as possible to have the best possible chances. He’ll be leaving for Europe at the end of December, to get as much time on snow in advance on the Worlds. This is the first big step in the direction of his dream - 2026 Winter Olympics. In the lead up, he’s been training with Tom Welby of Whale Bay Fitness on his strength and fitness and doing heaps of surfing before he’s off to colder climes! Ms Binnersley fills an extraordinary vacancy on the board after the by-election’s three-week voting period closed on 9 December. The by-election was triggered by the untimely death of former Chair and Deputy Chair Bob MacLeod earlier this year. Two candidates stood for election and Ms Binnersley prevailed over former community board member Alan Vink, 495 votes to 312. Raglan Ward Councillor Lisa Thomson commended both candidates for their involvement in the Whāingaroa (Raglan) community thus far. “Many Raglan community members are familiar with Kiri and Alan and their contribution to our local community,” said Councillor Thomson. “Alan has been an enthusiastic community member, having previously been on the Raglan Community Board for three terms. “Kiri serves on the Raglan Point Board Riders committee, is a member of the Raglan Women in Business group, as well as being a Business Chamber member.” Waikato District Council congratulates Ms Binnersley on her election, while acknowledging the contribution the late Mr MacLeod made to the Raglan community through his dedication and advocacy in the many roles he played.

Because of Covid 19 Restrictions we have decided that no indoor services will be offered here in our church from now until the end of January, at which time we will revisit the situation and hopefully be able to offer our church as a safe place of worship, This has been a difficult decision to make and we are sorry that it will be very disappointing to many.
