Is it all about winning? Yes! But in saying that - no as well. When you start playing a sport I found as a coach it was about teaching the girls how to catch a ball and to help develop their skills or teach them new skills that they could use on the court. Then as we developed as a squad then it was about putting us out on the score board and showing the other teams we are here to do bussiness. It has seems to have paid off as we played our finals on the weekend and we brought home the first place trophy for pool 3. Was sport important to you growing up? Yes it was. I loved playing sports. My family was so supportive of me with my netball. They helped me achieve goals that I never thought I could - making rep teams not just for the region, but for NZ, so I am proud of how sports helped me out growing up. How do you think team sports benefit our young ones today? Team sports show our kids how to grow as a individual, and as a team member to support your fellow team mates as well. Best piece of advice you could give to parents? I have nothing to say for this as I always say the parent has the last say when it comes to their child and sport. My advice would be that the kids stay in school, play sport, be young, but always remember when winter rolls around and sports time is here, be nice to your parents or you don’t get to play. Remember your parents have the last say on whether you get to play. Just one last thing. I would like to thank all those who supported the Karioi Ferns this year. Thanks to the umpires that refereed our games every Saturday, to the parents who brought our girls to training and to the games as well, and those who transported me to and from the game. Thanks to our sponsers who help us out through the season, and to the Raglan Sport Netball Club for all the support you showed http://www.weathermap.co.nz/?p=ragla this year to our girls. On Saturday we played our finals against Hamilton Rubies and won the game 24-17, so our girls brought home the trophy. Way to go my ladies. Weather Map

Five people caught up in “mock” accident

A

n accident at the far end of Joyce Petchell Park saw five people cut from the car at the scene, including three backpackers from Raglan, last Wednesday, around 7:30 pm. It wasn’t a true accident, however. It was a simulation exercise being undertaken by the Raglan Volunteer Fire Brigade designed to add “a bit of realism” for the volunteers to practice and maintain their skills. Organiser Leanna Darby said the volunteer firefighters trained together once a week on Wednesdays but did actual scenario training exercises - from car accidents to building fires – once every two months, as resources allowed. For the car accident simulations, cars were donated by local car salvage operator, Tiger, she said. “Tiger drops them off for us and we completely obliterate them…the reason we can do these exercises so realistically is because he gives them to us.” Leanna said that the “real people” used in the mock accident were unknown to the volunteer firefighters as “It’s good for the guys to have someone they don’t know” because it added “a bit of realism” and allowed them to act more seriously than if

Rugby wins for local teens R

aglan teenagers have been involved in winning national school rugby titles this month – including two from the same talented family - in a classic Waikato versus Auckland wrangle. Reiki Ruawai, 14, was on the Under 15 team that won the NZ National title in Palmerston North for his school, Hamilton Boys’ High School. His father, Brian Ruawai, said the final was a “real cliff hanger”, with HBHS trailling 26-13 just 15 minutes from the end but coming back to win 26-27 against Auckland’s Mt Albert Grammar team. “I don’t know how they pulled it off,” said Brian, a HBHS former student and league player. The same weekend, Reiki’s 16-year-old sister Kaea, was busy winning the national Girls 1st XV title with fellow Raglan teenagers Haven Garisau and Savon TovioSmith for Hamilton Girls’ High School. The girls had the upper hand in their final against Southern Cross School from Auckland, with a “comprehensive win” of 73-nil. Kaea, who was also a talented netball player, had only been playing rugby for a couple of years but loved the sport just as much as Reiki. Brian said both his children, who were now turning their attention to rugby 7s, worked hard at their sport. “I never thought I’d have two kids at different schools taking out national titles,” said the proud dad. He added that Reiki had received sponsorship from Raglan businesses Top Cut Butchery, Ray White and the Raglan Emporium to cover the cost of his training shirts. Rachel Benn

Young snowboarders grab title

R

aglan has once again proven it is a breeding ground for sporting talent, with Raglan Area School bringing home a first placing at the North Island Primary and Intermediate School Ski Championships at Whakapapa. The RAS team of Kugha Hutt, Zundea Barry and twins Leeto and Eli Hughes – also know as the Raglan Rockets - won the junior title for the snowboard division of the annual champs. The champs attracted more than 300 competitors from schools all around the North Island and was the biggest competition for snowboarders in particular, she said.

Raglan Rockets’ coordinator - and proud mum - Kath Hughes said all four members of the team had individually reached the top 16 and had gaining placings in most of their heats. All their scores were totalled and – just like last year – the RAS team came out on top. Last year’s team from RAS won the championship overall, but this year the competition was split into junior and senior sections. School were allowed to enter one snowboard team and one ski team. The RAS ski team did not place this year. “We love being on the mountain. It’s what we do. It’s easy when you love it,” Kath summed up. Rachel Benn

Xtreme wastes no time with new contract treme Zero Waste’s expertise X is being sought far and wide and has led to a contract to help set up and manage a community waste management centre in Auckland.

Raglan’s recycling business won a five-year contract from Auckland Council to set up the Waiuku recycle centre, vying against some large and international companies for the tender, said co-manager Rick Thorpe. The centre, which would follow a similar model to Raglan, would be operational by November 5. Xtreme had been involved with the centre over the past two years. Once the Waiuku centre was being successfully managed by the local community, which could take two to three years, Xtreme woud pull out. “We partnered with the local Waiuku community to support them through the difficult tendering process. So we’ll be there for just as long as they need us,” he said. The Waiuku recylcing centre would be the first of 30 community recycling centres the council wanted to set up by 2020. Xtreme might tender for some of these contracts in partnership with local groups if they required. Auckland Council, like Xtreme, had a target of zero waste reaching landfill, and believed the best way to achieve that was through changing people’s behaviour and involving the community in the process, he said. Rick said Xtreme’s work included training staff, establishing the business and helping centres develop markets for recycled material, with the focus on minimalising waste in the first place, then repairing and reusing, Xtreme had shared its knowledge and expertise on waste management with many communities around New

Zealand – as far afield as Oamaru and the Chatham Islands to Great Barrier Island - and had helped community groups prepare themselves for Council contracts. In the future, the Waikato District Council (WDC) was looking at setting up community recycling centres in both Huntly and Te Kauwhata, learning from the Raglan model. Matamata-Piako community groups were also wanting to manage their own local recycling and had asked for Xtreme’s help with changing their transfer stations. “It’s exciting times to see Waikato upping their game on waste management,” Rick said. Xtreme was a useful model for other centres because Raglan was a similar size to many of these other communities, and Xtreme was “more than happy” to help them with the transition process. “Lots of our people have been here [at Xtreme] for 14 years and they’re really skilled. There’s a potential for them to take on a lead role in some of these other ventures, recycling in a growing sector,” Rick said. It also meant Xtreme, which was set up in 2000, would get a return on the intellectual property it had built up in Raglan. Xtreme, a non-profit community enterprise contracted by the WDC, now diverted about 75 percent of Raglan’s waste from landfill. It employed 26 people and operated a recycling centre and transfer station, kerbside recycling, pre-paid bag refuse collection, business waste collection, street waste and recycling bins and miniskip hire. Rick said interactive education programmes with the community were part of its work, enabing people to become aware of their waste diversion options. Rachel Benn

Unconnected residents alarmed by rates bill

W

ith the cut-off day for joining the Whaanga Coast wastewater scheme looming tomorrow, some residents who haven’t joined the scheme are wondering why they are now being billed for the connection. A total of 75 properties have signed up for the Whaanga Coast wastewater scheme to date, with tomorrow being the last opportunity for ratepayers to join at the subsidised rate. Those who did not sign up, however, were being required to pay half the $716 District Wide Wastewater “availability fee” for the connection. Some Whaanga Coast residents were unaware they would have to pay this charge so were alarmed to see the fee on their latest rates bills. One Wainui Road resident, who did not want to be named, said there had been no explanation or communication from council about the charge. “It’s a lot of money for nothing. We’ve already paid about $20,000 to install our own system which

has been signed off [by council] as working up to standard, so it’s like paying twice,” she said. A lot of people were already struggling to meet their rates payments, so this would add to their burden, she added. Waikato District Council general manager service delivery Tim Harty confirmed the council had received queries from residents concerned about their rates assessment. The 75 properties that had signed up to the scheme would pay the subsidised amount of $15,390, with council covering 52 percent of the connection cost. “Throughout the process we have discussed this subsidy with property owners, particularly those who choose not to connect to the scheme as they will still be required to half of the availability fee.” He said property owners connecting to the scheme had been given a number of payment options, so the individual rates assessment would vary according to their personal circumstances. The $3.7 million Whaanga Coast project involved the installation of piping from Te Tuhi

Road, along Wainui Road to the Raglan wastewater treatment plant. Individual properties that joined the scheme were then connected to the main pipeline using a low pressure sewer pumping system. Tim said work on the scheme was nearing completion. The council has said that once the project was completed, the subsidy would no longer be available and property owners would have to pay the full amount. Tim said the council was even more keen to maximise the uptake of connections following the recent release of an environmental scan report, which supported it’s decision to reticulate to reduce any public health risk from current onsite wastewater disposal systems. “The results of the survey are consistent with the message we’ve delivered to the community throughout the project, that ground disposal of wastewater in the Whaanga Coast area presents an unacceptable level of health and environmental risk,” he said. If you are interested in joining the scheme contact the Waikato District Council on 0800 492 452. Rachel Benn

Roots, rock and reggae at YOT Club this weekend I

ts all on at the Yot Club this weekend… kicking off with the Bob Marley tribute night on Friday to celebrate and pay tribute to Bob Marley and his spirit for love and freedom which were so important to him and the world. Presented by Uenuku Toa Aotearoa, the night kicks off at 9pm with reggae grooves from DJ Wiz NZ, followed by live unplugged sets from Uenuku Rawiri, Chingy Williams and friends. Local urban artist ‘Sear’ will paint a Bob Marley portrait and best dressed in rastasSteez will win the portrait. Saturday brings one of Raglan’s favourite acts back to the Yotty: Labretta Suede and The Motel 6 are newly back from the USA where they spent the past 5 odd years based in New York, whilst touring the USA extensively. Gathering a huge fan base and spreading their feverish disease long and far from the volcanic pools of lava in Aotearoa, to the apocalyptic urban jungle of New York! A place where only the sick & depraved can truly survive. They were a NYC favourite that took the whole of the USA by storm and now Europe too. Their recent Spanish tour sent heads-arollin’.... So, please welcome back one of New Zealand’s wildest rock ‘n’ roll outfits Labretta Suede and The Motel 6 for yet another heart pounding performance at the Raglan YOT Club.

Their melding sound of nostalgic, yet originally infused swagger has always been at the fore front of bad-ass rock ‘n’ roll, car culture, b-grade art, cinema and burlesque. All this spawned from right here, in our faraway shores of Aotearoa. So come and be apart of the fever and celebrate their brand-new 7 Inch single ‘In Full’ which topped the 95 BFM Top 10 chart. Upcoming gigs at The Yot Club include, Jason Kerrison from Opshop on the 26th September and The Brown Brothers on the 27th. Cornerstone Roots homecoming gig is on Saturday the 4th October. Mighty Mighty on the 11th October and Knights of the Dub Table 18th October.

Letter: To the Editor, On behalf of the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Division of the Cancer Society New Zealand, I would like to extend a huge thank you to the people of this region who supported our annual fundraising and awareness campaign, Daffodil Day! While the funds are still trickling in, we are pleased to report that as a result of your generosity we are likely to raise in excess of $600,000 this year which is a fantastic result and made possible through your support. The 24th annual Daffodil Day, on Friday

29th August was met with tremendous support as hundreds of volunteers stood at collection sites or pounded the pavement collecting donations across the region. The involvement of these volunteers, school kids, parents, grandparents, businesses and the general public made Daffodil Day the successful community event it is known for. Whether you purchased daffodils or fundraised on our behalf, we thank you, we couldn’t have done it without you. Judy Gould Chief Executive

Raglan Area School teachers inquire into the impact of their teaching on their students. How do we ensure that our teachers are providing the best learning opportunities for our students? In the past, teachers have relied on class observation to provide feedback on their teaching. Although this can be effective to improving teacher practice, the research

articulates that excessive numbers of observations can be counter-productive and do not necessarily lead to better outcomes for students. As a result of our dedication to improve learning opportunities at Raglan Area School the teachers have been inquiring into their teaching.

Registered Valuers Property Consultants

Raglan police have been contacted by residents in the Raglan West area, particulary around Nihinihi avenue who have concerns about a wandering dog. The dog is described as similar to a Bull Mastiff coloured brindle. It is a large brown dog with a yellow studded collar. The dog has been wandering onto various properties for the last three weeks. It doesn’t appear aggressive towards people but the residents have concerns that the dog is a risk to the homeowners pets. Police would like to identify the dog so the owner can be contacted.

RAGLAN DENTAL CLINIC

“... inquiry is about challenging teachers’ thinking in ways that promotes their own learning as well as that of their students. For this to happen, teachers need to examine their taken-forgranted practices critically in the light of evidence about students’ learning (Timperley, Wilson, Barrar and Fung, 2007). They should also explore relevant research literature that can challenge their thinking and offer new teaching possibilities” (ERO, May 2011) As part of the journey the teachers have the opportunity to reflect on their own practice by watching a video of their lesson and analysing the student voice in regard to, what they think they are learning, why do they think they are learning it and how will they know they have learnt it? The process has been inspiring and the teachers are fully engaged in their learning action plan. The community should feel proud of their efforts to improve teaching and learning, which will lead to better outcomes for all of our students. Bronwyn Haitana

Death Notice

AUDREY MAUREEN SPOONER: 6th October 1926 – 3rd September 2014. Our mother died of a heart attack at 1pm Wednesday 3rd September. She was farewelled at a private service as to her wishes at the White Rose Chapel in Hamilton East on Tues 9th. She was courageous, kind and gracious to the end. We would like to thanks all her friends and associates from the Horticultural Society, the Golf Club, the Lion’s ‘Op Shop crew,’ the Light Exercise group, the Spinning Club, the Friday Afternoon Bridge Club and all other residents that knew Audrey, walking on the beach or in your everyday lives, for your kind thoughts and condolences. For those who remember Mum as Practice Nurse for Dr. Andrew McNab, we enclose an email sent by him on learning of her passing: “ Audrey Spooner, such a good person and great friend and colleague. An impact on the health of Raglan that was so impressive yet came so naturally. Kind nursing skills combined with accurate, matter-of-fact patient assessment. Wake-up-calls that some less kind than me may have mistaken for blunt and unsympathetic. The one who transformed my much needed half-day Thursdays into a half day. Only the sick would want to explain themselves to her ☺. No hypochondriacs, work dodgers, drug seekers or general malingerers. Often appeared a little surprised at how much I appreciated her ability and unaware of how hilariously entertaining she could be as she went about her work. Condolences to everyone. Cheers, Andrew” Gerard, Megan, Prudence, Priscilla and Harold Spooner. She also leaves behind 15 Grandchildren and 17 Great Grandchildren.
