Kristel van Houte demonstrates how stoat traps are checked and cleared
Local conservationists will be out in force this weekend, with a workshop on bushcraft set to take place in Raglan Town Hall on Saturday before they head out the next day to set up to 30 traps in native bush on and around Mt Karioi. It’s a community-led project of pest eradication which aims to protect native plant and bird life, says A Rocha Aotearoa NZ national president and Raglan resident Kristel van Houte who’s running the workshop to coincide with the tail end of Conservation Week. She’s hoping for a repeat of last year’s success in which 52 stoat traps were set across Mt Karioi’s main tracks from Te Toto Gorge (Karioi track) to Ruapuke Road (Wairere track). Kristel recalls it was “amazing” to have 50 people traverse the mountain in one day, setting traps to determine the feasibility of establishing stoat control over the entire mountain. This weekend’s exercise will be a “mini version” of that, she says, with 20 to 30 traps expected to be set. The long-term aim of the Karioi Biodiversity Restoration Project – run as a partnership between national Christian charity A Rocha, Te Whakaoranga o Karioi, local hapu and the Whaingaroa community – is to
eventually be able to reintroduce stoatvulnerable native species such as kiwi and kaka to the mountain. Volunteers expected to turn out for the hands-on bushcraft workshop and follow-up trap-setting day are in the most part “really committed” Raglan people, Kristel says, although last year’s exercise also attracted some conservationists from Tauranga and Auckland. Judging by the interest in this Saturday’s workshop, she adds, more people are “stepping up” and a lunchtime barbecue is planned to acknowledge that support. It’s a way of building on local enthusiasm with volunteers being trained on the day in bush skills by DOC staff, and people get the chance to be involved in both pest trapping and monthly monitoring of various species’ survival over spring and summer. The pest control project began three years ago in Upper Wainui Reserve and was expanded in 2010 to include Bryant Memorial Scenic Reserve, specifically to protect native forest birds and seabird nesting sites of the grey-faced petrel or Oi. Mt Karioi is the only Waikato mountain which hasn’t had an active restoration plan until now. Edith Symes

Social sport a hit with Raglan youths

While Sunday is often one of those lazy layabout kinds of days - especially if you’re recovering from a big night out - a group of young Raglanders have recently been getting together for an afternoon of social sport every Sunday. Organised by 18-year-old Janet Andre, the social sport days were originally aimed at getting a
group of girls together to socialise and be active, “I was just thinking about how I used to play (sport). Growing older, a lot of the teenagers stopped playing and I really missed it,” said Janet. “It’s also about getting together and socializing and having something other than drinking to look forward to.”

After creating a Facebook page to see who would be interested, Janet found that many of the local boys were also keen to do something active together, with the page now holding around 50 members. “The boys, like my brothers Josiah and Arden were keen so I didn’t want to leave them out, it’s cool because we have quite a few family groups now like the Meeks and the Poulters,” says Janet. There were about 20 participants on the day the Chronicle visited and the sporting get-togethers have been running steadily for the past two to three months now, a great effort considering they don’t have any sports gear. “We don’t officially have any equipment but between us we’ll have something. We usually have to rely on somebody to bring a ball and then we’ll use jerseys and shoes as markers,” says Janet.
The current Wintec cookery student has been looking around to see what kinds of funding is available even if it is just donations of soccer/rugby/tennis balls. Playing anything from netball, tennis, basketball, soccer and ‘jail’ (similar to capture the flag) Janet has mustered a pretty fit crew of youngsters. “Everyone seems to love it and look forward to it every week and they’re all keen to try anything out. It’s so great to see a group turn up like today.” With hope on the horizon for longer and warmer days, Janet is looking forward to summer when she can start organising get-togethers playing sport on the beach. The Sporty Girls and Boys of Raglan meet at the rugby grounds, 4pm every Sunday and invites anybody who wants to play sports and have fun to come along. Maki Nishiyama

Beach-head the centre of fight against erosion Shifting sand about on an exposed and erosion-prone stretch of beach is a dicey task at the best of times, so who better to call in than an experienced local contracting firm by the name of Tricky Excavations. His digger got on the odd precarious angle but Stan Sedcole wasn’t pulling a lever wrong out at Ocean Beach last week as he cleared old vegetation away and set about reshaping the sandbank that forms a natural barrier between the strong tidal currents and the overlooking car parking and picnicking area alongside the council toilet block there. But though Stan made short work of his task, a digger’s rarely a popular sight at a beach and Waikato District Council staffer Noel Barber was away placating an upset nearby resident when the Chronicle called by to take a photo. As it turned out most concerns were quickly placated once it became clear the reshaping was only the first stage in a “Beachcare” project aimed at fighting erosion – even if there was some later worry for the exposed sandbank as a lethal mix of fierce northwesterlies and violent storms brought fresh foreshore erosion elsewhere about Raglan. Waikato Regional Council “Beachcare” coordinator Sam Stephens says it’s a threeway project with the district council managing accessway and earthworks aspects, the regional council supplying and managing planting of native species effective in combating erosion, and the community set to join in the planting day later this month. He says iwi are also involved, and they and the two councils met earlier this year to

Iwi will also help directly with the replanting. “It’s a continuation of the works started at this site two years ago where we have been reshaping and replanting the eroding bank with native dune plants,” Sam says. The project, he says, aims to “help mitigate coastal erosion, improve natural character and biodiversity values of the area, and allow the public to be involved in a hands-on way”. Sam says the native plants chosen to fight the erosion tide are spinifex, pingao – which is culturally significant to iwi as a weaving
resource, and also has spiritual values – and wiwi. “A lot of these native species have been lost from our coastlines as a result of cattle grazing, rabbits, development and recreation – motorbikes and the like – yet they provide a crucial role in building dunes and providing protection from erosion,” he says. He adds other species such as kikuyu grass and the South African ice plant, which currently dominate the Wainamu or Ocean Beach area, do not have the same ability to build dunes and self-repair.
Surf-reef company vanishes but broaderbased venture thriving An American company has “walked away” from Raglan town centre without a word – leaving a large vacant office space next to Vinnies and its former director, Shaw Mead, saying he’s perplexed as to what’s going on. The Wainui Road first-floor premises which until early this year housed ASR Marine Consultants and Research now lies vacant and the company has disappeared, says Shaw, although he adds he’s aware of some ongoing legal action in the background. “I resigned from ASR one-and-a-half years ago as a director,” Shaw told the Chronicle this week, “and one year ago didn’t renew my contract.” As a co-founder of ASR – which was originally based at his home office in Whale Bay – the longtime Raglan resident and environmental scientist said it was “quite upsetting” to see the business he built up over 15 years shut down locally, despite it still having interests in California and India. But he concedes he had a good indication of what might have happened, citing “very poor management” as the reason behind the company’s apparent collapse in New Zealand. ASR was bought out three years ago by a Californian-based group, Shaw explained, and he resigned as director 18 months
later because it became “top-heavy” with management at the expense of technical staff. “I couldn’t see how it (the company) would work,” he said. The upstairs office area on Wainui Road was stripped of its contents and vacated earlier this year. “Tenancy available” adverts in the Chronicle public notices column describe it as a combined administration, kitchen and toilet facility area of 260 square metres and direct enquiries to Raglan lawyer Jon Webb’s Hamilton office. Shaw said he still owned 20 percent of the company. But he made clear he was currently heavily involved with his new company eCoast, which he started last September on leaving ASR. It operated across Asia-Pacific, Europe, Africa, the Americas and in other parts of the world, he said. “We are doing really well.” His new consulting and research business was broader based than ASR, focusing not just on coastal management – of which artificial surf reefs were a small part – but also on both marine and freshwater ecology. “We’ve diversified,” he explained. However Shaw said he still had some input into surf reef projects which 20 years ago, with the new technology available, were
to be the biggest growth area. Two ASRdesigned surf reefs were built in India and there’s a research reef at Mount Maunganui, although its five-year Shaw Mead consent has now expired. Meanwhile there’s another wavemaking reef off Opunake, in Taranaki, which he said never got finished after the worldwide recession hit. Shaw said he took three colleagues with him when he moved from ASR to his new eCoast. His new company now has six partners and was looking to build a good, strong consultancy. As part of that a move from his home office in Cliff Street to commercial premises could be on the cards next year. Meanwhile former Raglan resident Dr Kerry Black, who at one stage owned 54 per cent of ASR, is understood to have sold out to American interests more than three years ago and to now live in Australia. This is expected to be as early as Saturday week – September 22 – once work on fencing the new planting off from the public and providing new accessways is finished. All-up the project is expected to cost only $7000, thanks to the free community labour. The regional council puts the cost of plants at $4000 and the district council estimates its costs at $3000. Commencing at 7pm on Saturday 22nd September, the Raglan Arts Film Festival Awards (RAFFA) ceremony shines the spotlight on Whaingaroa’s own filmmakers and actors with a screening of the short films and highlights of the nominated features before the honours are awarded. Tahi Rangiawha, Luke Lovini and Sam Solomon all raised their hands when the call went out for Jiujitsu competitors to represent Raglan recently in Thames. No easy feat considering the competition that awaited them. The competition was pretty fierce. Sam won two out of three fights to rightfully claim his silver medal. Luke won all three bouts including taking down a black belt opponent. Tahi had to take it to the heavy weights. Tahi dropped his final opponent with a jab cross hook uppercut followed by a single leg takedown and got the decision in his 3rd and final fight - taking 1st place and the gold. My day was complete as I watched the boys receive their medals: Sam Solomon – Silver Luke Lovini – Gold Tahi Rangiawha – Gold What a day! Firstly I am not sanctioned by Coast Guard, local councils or any other authority to write this article. I have tried to cover all points accurately as possible from my own experiences and hopefully it is of assistance to all other users. Listed below are the dangers of Harbour Bar crossings: • •
Lack of experience in dealing with breaking waters. Lack of local knowledge, including current weather, tides, sea conditions, and geographically where the most safest/ dangerous part of the Bar crossing is located. • Planning and working out the optimum time in advance to cross the Bar on that day. • Boat and crew not adequately prepared to cross the Bar. • Cavitation. • Panicking in a situation when it it all goes all horribly wrong. A number of harbours and river mouths around the NZ coastline have harbour bars. Most of these, at times, are notorious to cross, none worse so, than on our North Island’s West Coast. This article is based on my harbour, Raglan. Most of the content in this article is from my own personal experiences of over forty years plus of Bar crossings, and it does not get any easier. Hopefully most points are covered. A Harbour Bar has breaking waves at times because of its shallowing of depth and the size of the ocean swell as it crosses it. Swell can run out at sea up to 25mph, when it comes to the Bar, the bottom friction causes it to slow down, the wave swell length diminishes, but the swell height increases. The crest of the wave becomes unstable and overtakes the slowing waves and it breaks. Just like on any surf beach white water is aerated water and boat propellers can lose traction in white water: This is known as cavitation. Just what we don’t need when we are in the most dangerous of situations. CAVITATION: Because of the amount of air particles in the water your propeller looses its thrust, and the engine revs can change. You need your hand on the throttle like a feather, for if you panic and thrust the throttle down, it will just scream the motor and have no bite or thrust from the propeller. Then you have to pull back on the throttle and start again. You have no time for this. I believe many bar incidents occur because of cavitation. The next moment your boat will be sideways on to the next breaking wave bearing down on you. Swamped. It is not nice. The size of your boat, design of your boat, the size of your motor makes no difference, cavitation in these waters WILL get you. Remember, have the outboard leg right down, you may have it trimmed out whilst running at sea or up the harbour, but you need that outboard leg right down now. PROCEDURE FOR ENTERING RAGLAN HARBOUR: You may well say why are you in this situation, well, we go out on the full tide (optimum time to cross going out) and come back when the sea breeze has come up, swell could be up, the tide is wrong, and the fish bin is full. So stop at a safe distance outside the Bar. The Bar could be breaking right across. Secure everything movable on the vessel. Preferably rods out of the rocket launcher. Ensure anchor and warp are secure. Check petrol supply. Ensure life jackets are on and correctly fitted to all on board. Check outboard is fully trimmed down. Call Coastguard to go onto a Bar Watch for entering the harbour. Channel 86 Raglan. Establish your position with the harbour navigation beacons.(Sector Light) You will not see these when into the bar crossing. You will have a big wave in front of you. GPS. Use your wool trail on the GPS screen of previous crossings and put your boat symbol on them to stay on course. Possibility run one boat at a time in crossing the bar. You can get cramped for space if you have to maneuver. Right, begin your run to the Bar, running on the leads (Sector Beacon Light) and pick a lull in the swell, turn if not happy and wait for the next lull then run with it. Run a planing speed of say 15mph.The swell speed will dictate your speed but you must be planing. Ensure your crew is holding on to substantial fittings. Do not cross the wave you are running with. Stay on the back of it. If you think you have too much speed, do not go off the plane, but run, small runs, back and forth along the back of this wave and stay there.

You are committed now. Do not turn back. Your wave will increase in size substantially. It will break so stay with the coming in procedure. The wave close behind, is about to do the same and will not catch up to you. Stay on the back, do not go through it. The sea will be smooth. White Water. Your hand is a feather on the throttle, the outboard rev will change notably as it fights for a bite in the water. As that wave breaks in front of you, it is still moving in, keep it calm, and you are in. It takes under 30secs. You only have that one wave, it is the one you rode from out at sea. Immediately check your bearings to the harbour beacons. When safely further up the harbour, clear your crossing with Auckland Coastguard. JOGGLE: Before I write about going out, the Joggle is the next stretch of water to pass through after that Bar crossing. The Joggle is pressure waves created by the large tides of the month and is worse when the maximum flood is running out. You have pyramids of water basically condensed at the entrance, but not on the Bar, rushing out to sea, but can hit you diagonally. Here you have to be patient as a skipper and unlike the Bar actually work your throttle through these seas. If your bow drops pull back on the throttle, if the bow is up use lots of throttle, you will not plane in this stuff. Negotiate these waters carefully as there can be some big holes. I have been dumped and the cross slop entering the fishing area meant running the bilge pump. CROSSING THE RAGLAN BAR GOING OUT: If it is a continuous Bar break, white water right across, the Bar is not negotiable! Do not go out at all. As above with coming in, these checks for crossing going out are the same. Secure the boat. Lifejackets on, check petrol. Outboard trimmed down, Call Coastguard to go onto a VHF Ch 86 Bar watch, crew to hold on etc. Try to cross on an incoming tide or high tide preferably. If the Bar is marginal, time the break - is it settled for 3 or 4 minutes before it builds again? Go down close to the breaking water to observe, timing of the breaks, which side of the entrance is it breaking from, stay on the leads (sector Light) to give your position, and stay in water depth 6/7m. If another boat is going out watch him and do not follow, the next set of swells he has judged to miss may hit you, so circle and judge for your optimum time. Two boats can cramp space to move around and you may have his wake to deal with. Look out beyond the Bar, to the horizon for dark blue sets coming, or look South to Whale Bay or further for sets crashing on the shore. Inside the Bar run the boat in slow circles, waiting. It is safe here. If the lulls are judged to be long enough, time your chance after the next break. If you are going, go go go! If the wave/swell rises, go for the saddle the lowest part of that peaking wave. You are committed you cannot turn back. Bow ( the boat front)always to the wave, if you have to wear one, take it easy, just good easy motion up the wave and down the other side, don’t gun the motor for you will be hugely airborne and it’s a long way down into the bottom of the swell and the next one is coming now to swamp you. So next wave quickly look for a soft low saddle to cross, again if the previous broke you may have cavitation, take it easy. Bow to the wave, wear it and the same for the next, if you are through, everyone will be wet then…. Quickly move out of this area, a five minute run, then stop and take stock. Call Coastguard to say you are through the Bar. Give a TR Report for the rest of your day. Boats and outboards are very well made today and the incidences of motor failure and petrol blockages on the Bar have been eliminated. Boats do not fail on Bars, Skippers do! Today it is Skipper error, being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Panic, pushing the throttle down in mushy aerated water, you just lose it. If you are afraid, do not go. If the conditions are marginal do not go, stay away! Local Coastguards run, in our case, two Bar Safety days per year, these are well worth attending. Firstly you are on their vessel and they show how far off shore the Bar actually is, it is not at the seemly entrance but a further kilometer out to sea. They show you the width, depth, take you through and back. They point out the sand spits or shoaling areas on both sides. This is the knowledge you need to build on. Remember, if you go to cross the Bar and you consider it too dangerous and you don’t go, good on you, you live for another day and those fish will still be out there for you next time.
On the search for marine rescue volunteers Raglan Volunteer Coastguard is on the search for new recruits. Our search and rescue personnel fulfil varied roles including rescue vessel crews, radio communication operators, and incident administrators and managers. All of our volunteers train hard, are physically and mentally equipped to take on any challenge in often less than inviting conditions, and are dedicated to the 24/7 year-round service we provide to the greater Raglan maritime community. Training at Raglan Volunteer Coastguard is to the highest level of marine Search and Rescue offered in the country. Some classroom-based learning is required; however, the majority of our training is practical taking into account skills, drills and a range of life-like scenarios designed to the local environment and community needs. “Rescue volunteers are expected to commit to a tenweek induction programme starting 3rd October 2012 before becoming an on-call trainee for approximately 12 months, and then graduating on to operational crew,” says Raglan Volunteer Coastguard Unit Training Officer, Vivienne Regnier. Golf Club Champs The first round of the Raglan Golf Match Play Championships were supposed to be played last weekend. Unfortunately, due to bad weather very few people attended and some games had to be postponed. Most of the remaining matches in the first round will now be played this Sunday the 16th of September. Letter: Vets to the rescue. Recently I have had the misfortune of watching a young healthy vibrant dog stricken with a rare condition – deteriorate to the stages of near death – only being saved by the skills and determination of the vets and nurses at our local clinic and one heroic dog donor. My loved pet was saved in part by a blood transfusion from her pal at home. Which led up to the conversation about setting up a register for blood donor dogs – they would need to be young healthy and of good size and be able to assist a trauma at short notice. Shane & Donna had considered this for some time and potentially a cost of setting up such a scheme may be prohibitial – I’m sure responsible dog owners would be happy to pay an offset cost for the life of their loyal friends.
