My husband and I were on the hill at Wainui Beach on Saturday watching the 6m swells from the storms. There were two surf club life saving dinghys practicing in the surf below. One, carrying two people went over the tops of the waves and right out to sea by about three quarters of a mile and disappeared, while the other was more cautious and stayed closer to shore. My husband who is a keen fisherman, and is used to watching the sea noticed the boat that had gone further out was suddenly being tossed by the waves, was upside down and with no one in it. We then watched as the more cautious crew of the other craft, turned back out to sea, and went far beyond where they had previously been, and perhaps didn’t want to go. The waves were so high and rough, they were just a speck in comparison. But on they went, up and down the beach, finding the empty boat, and then right out to where the sea was the roughest to look for their colleagues. They eventually returned to find the two who had gone into the water had made it most of the way back, and what could have been an awful tragedy costing perhaps four lives had been averted. Considering the coastguard the evening before had said they would not consider putting their craft out in such conditions, or endangering the lives of their crew, the actions of the two who went to find the empty boat and crew were truly brave and courageous. They deserve to be publically commended.

Raglan arts stalwart honoured with regional award The regional award – presented by Arts Waikato on Friday night at Waikato University’s Wel Academy of Performing Arts – recognised the contribution made by marketing expert and Raglan resident Rodger Gallagher. But Rodger was quick to point out to the Chronicle that the award also reflected the achievements of Raglan Community Arts Council of which he is chair. “These achievements have only been possible through the work of our committee and other volunteers,” said the former top Telecom executive. Rodger joined the committee in 2004,

becoming chairperson one year later. “Since then we have changed the Raglan Arts Council into a progressive organisation able to provide strong support to enable all of the arts in the Whaingaroa community to thrive and prosper,” he said. “The council has been fortunate to have had many people who have made a giant contribution as leaders over the years,” he added, “so what I have been able to achieve has been possible by standing on [their] shoulders.” Rodger was joined by a good team of Whaingaroa supporters at the awards evening, which also saw budding Raglan film-maker Micah Puklowski recognised as an up-andcoming talent and awarded an arts scholarship for continuing studies. Lonely Planet rates Raglan Lifeguards Lonely Planet’s newest edition of the New Zealand travel guide went on sale last week – and Raglan gets a big thumbs up from the authors. This year Raglan is rated number five in the book’s “Top NZ picks” - ahead of renowned tourist hotspots like Rotorua and the Tongariro National Park.

“Laid-back Raglan” says the book, “may well be NZ’s perfect surfing town. It’s small enough to have escaped mass development – perhaps due to a mainstream Kiwi preference for the safer white-sand east-coast beaches – yet it’s big enough for a bit of bustle. There are several good eateries and a bar that attracts big-name bands in summer. This all serves to attract fit guys and gals from all over the planet; Raglan may also be NZ’s best-looking town.” And newly revamped tourism website Raglan Net is also referenced with the

guidebook telling potential visitors to “have a look online at www.raglan.net.nz.” This latest edition of the guidebook lists Abel Tasman Park as the country’s “Top Pick,” with Auckland following close behind. Good old Kiwi hospitality also gets a mention with the book saying, “there’s one dimension of a trip to New Zealand that you probably haven’t counted on: the extent to which the average Kiwi will genuinely want you to have a really, really good time.” This year Lonely Planet included New Zealand in their top 10 countries to visit - saying New Zealand’s spectacular landscapes, from sea-level rainforests to plunging glaciers, geothermal springs and barren volcanic plains, are all part of the attraction. The country’s growing profile on the international stage has prompted Lonely Planet to extend their range of guidebooks for the country, with three more new titles being released this year. tossed from IRB

Two Raglan lifeguards got more action than they bargained on in last weekend’s stormy seas when the IRB they took out for an unscheduled training session flipped at Manu Bay, forcing them to swim to safety.

The pair went with the rip and all but made it to shore, says Raglan Surf Life Saving Club president Anne Snowden, before being picked up by two fellow lifeguards also out training in a second inflatable boat. A turbulent sea, she says, made it very hard for them to be seen. “It could have ended up a lot worse,” adds Anne. “It was a fantastic west coast day but not to be out in – (only) to be watched.” The lifeguards have been spoken to about their decision to train in the dangerous 6m swell. Despite the stormy weather, Raglan’s other emergency services reported a quiet weekend with only some tree branches and power lines brought down by the high winds. Edith Symes

Maca-incan superfood! In women it may help with: Hot flushes Tender breasts Emotional upsets Vaginal dryness Period problems PMS Osteoporosis

In men it may help with: Impotence Fatigue Low libido Stress Infertility

The effects of this root reach far beyond just the hormonal system though. Maca can be used daily as a general tonic to help with overall vitality.

Maca, a dehydrated root vegetable, has been used for over 10 000 years, as an integral part of the diet and commerce of the high Andes regions. So powerful was this food, that the Incas restricted its use to their Royalty’s court! Peruvian medical doctors, in particular, regard Maca not only as a highly nutritious food, but also as a potent medicinal substance. USES Maca contains essential alkaloids which help promote the health of the endocrine system. The hypothalamus, pituitary, thyroid, adrenal glands, ovaries in women and testes in men all form part of this delicate system. Maca has shown to improve hormonal imbalances in both sexes.

Film puts Whaingaroa Harbour Care in the picture Images of Raglan hit the big screen again next month when a new environmental film – Water Whisperer Tangaroa – has its Hamilton premiere at the Lido Cinema, celebrating the work of community groups around the country as they heal river, lake and sea.

Whaingaroa Harbour Care is one of the two groups featured for its work with NZ Landcare Trust, which aims to get communities pulling together to “make a difference” to the environment. The Aorere Catchment Group is the other. Shot at what are described as “stunning locations around New Zealand”, the film sets out to explore the work of 10 communities as they seek to repair waterways and protect them for future generations. It highlights the people behind the conservation work, says Landcare – people

with a passion for their local rivers, lakes and oceans who also have the drive to initiate change. And that includes Harbour Care’s Fred Lichtwark, who has been invited to the launch to answer questions on the work around Raglan. While Fred hasn’t yet seen the finished production, which was filmed about six months ago, he reckons it’s all a good positive plug for Raglan despite possibly revealing some controversial “truths” about Waikato District Council which hasn’t always given its full support to Harbour Care. The fact Landcare sees Harbour Care’s work as “worthy of promoting”, says Fred, is testament to Raglan community’s achievement in its quest for clean waterways. Fred pays special tribute to the rural sector, which he says at first rebuffed then embraced change from traditional farming practices to better, more sustainable methods.

Change has been “phenomenal” despite the recession, he adds, and Raglan’s efforts have been duplicated around the country as the film portrays. Award-winning cinematographer and Wickcandle Film director Kathleen Gallagher says the movie’s about “reconnection of ourselves with our lakes, rivers and oceans”. Old fishermen and conservationists, farmers, iwi and divers are among those she sourced to get to the heart of the story. The film follows the recent New Zealand launch of Last Paradise, an eco- adventure film which includes vintage Raglan surf cuts shot from a board-mounted camera in the ‘60s. *Water Whisperers Tangaroa will screen first in Christchurch early next month with further screenings in Wellington, Hamilton and Auckland. Hamilton’s screening is on Tuesday, October 5 at 8pm.

Tuesday will be a day for the art lovers as you make artworks with a nautical theme for the coming exhibition at the Old School. For those not so fond of picture making, Thursday offers an mix of jewellery craft (also with a nautical theme) and of course knot tying, an essential skill for any sailor –some of those fancy knots are truly beautiful as well as fascinating to make. As usual during Chris and Yann’s holiday programme, Wednesday is Treasure Hunt day and Friday cooking day when you will learn how to make survival food and ‘sea cookies’ – useful to know as well as fun. Parents and caregivers – your children can attend for the whole week, a day at a time or for half days. While it is ok to turn up on the day, it is very much easier for Chris and Yann if they have an idea of numbers in advance, as some of the activities involve a lot of preparation. Tree man rescues moggy

A Raglan arborist branched out from his usual work recently when he em-barked on a perilous mission of mercy to rescue a kitten stranded up high in a tree.

Scott Hunter had to walk through gorse and rugged bush country for half an hour in wet weather before scaling the 20 metre-tall cabbage tree to reach Jonesy, a stranded moggy who’d been missing for five days from his home just east of Raglan. “This guy [Scott] is tough,” says Jonesy’s delighted owner Petra Yorke, who last week couldn’t find enough words to express her gratitude. “He (Scott) climbed that tree like he was walking up the road … he made it look so easy.” And he’d answered her frantic call for help with no hesitation, adds Petra, despite apparently having just showered and shaved for a party. “I can’t leave the cat up a tree,” he told her. Scott arrived at her place in pouring rain with all the gears including spiked boots, a harness and rope.

He told Petra he’d never had quite such a callout before. Petra says she’d been at her wits’ end for days after oneyear-old Jonesy – named in honour of the Mitre 10 TV ad – disappeared. His vanishing act followed some target practice she and her son had been enjoying at the fenceline of a bush property bordering their own off State Highway 23. “I thought we’d shot him,” confesses Petra. But days on they heard a faint meow in the bush and, with a compass and a dog, headed back to investigate. After four hours of searching, ‘Jonesy’ and rescuer Scott Hunter they spotted Jonesy stuck up the “huge” tree and with no way of getting down. Petra says Jonesy appeared none Phone calls to the vet, SPCA and the worse for wear and ventured fire brigade drew a blank. On Saturday 2nd October ‘Jacquemo’ play live at the Yot Club with an uplifting fusion of ska, pop and roots which will get you out of your chairs and onto the dance floor.

Fronted by musician and songwriter Nic Tribe the band was originally formed using some of the best musicians from his hometown Brighton UK to promote his 2009 solo composed album ‘Lucky Sargent.’ This received excellent reviews from music press and audiences alike for it’s wide range of influences and eclectic sound. Following on from his U.K success and now living in Raglan, Nic

has gathered local talent including Boyd Dixon - drums, Jak Prima bass, and Nicky Stevens – keyboards to perform at his New Zealand debut gig and album launch.

Combining catchy melodies with quirky lyrics Jacquemo entertains with tales of colorful characters reminiscent of U.K greats such as Ian Drury, Madness and The Specials and guarantees to provide a great foot stomping night out. Paul Herbert: Born Blenheim 02-12-52 From an early age Paul realized he had a couple of passions in life:design and the sea. (Paul has been a surfer since he was 12 years old.) Paul was fortunate enough to have been influenced by Robin White (Art Teacher and a leading artist of the 70-80’s) and Sam Hunt ( English Teacher) at Mana College, Wellington. Both Robin and Sam helped Paul to focus on his passion and develop his approach to creating and design. After almost 30 years running his graphic design business (Graphic Eyes Limited), and a life changing triple-bypass Paul decided to get back to some of his grass root passions of painting, carving and surfing.

Paul reinterpreted these into an ordered imposition and repetition in his painting’s structure. Repetition of the Nikau palm allows for this segmentation of the painting which reinforces his style of “ordered randomness”. Paul was a finalist in the Yellow Pages Awards in 2006 and exhibits his work in the annual Cambridge Society of Arts “The Exhibition” since 2007, the Heritage Gallery and cafes in Cambridge. Paul feels he is still in a very strong learning curve with his paint style but hopes to explore many different subject matter and mediums. Meet Paul Herbert, Sat 25th Sept 12 – 3 pm, at Matapihi Art Gallery, 34 Bow st.

Paul’s paintings (mainly acrylic on canvas) have a strong graphic design influence in the use of shapes, bright colours, eye to detail, 3D forms, photo realism - all developed through graphic design skills learnt over his lifetime. Paul has formulated a style heavily influenced by his skills as a graphic designer plus his fascination of nature’s wilderness and wildlife... so called “jumbled randomness” of shapes and colours.

A huge thanks to Deirdre, Terry and the team from D’s at the Raglan Club for the wonderful event they hosted on Saturday 11th of September. The dining room at the Raglan Club was transformed into a medieval banquet room and with King “Chic” and his lovely Queen residing much merriment was had. The entertainment included jousting knights, archery contests, singing and dancing. The costumes were spectacular... monks, serving wenches, hunchbacks, damsels, peasants and knights amongst others. The menu was scrumptious and a lot of effort and research had been put into the 3 courses with many dishes representative of fine medieval dining. In keeping with the theme we ate with knives and spoons ( forks had yet to be invented in medieval times ) Goblets of mulled wine certainly warmed the cockles of our hearts and led to some fine exhibitions of dancing and wassailing. All in all a fantastic night and tremendous value! A pity more people did not brave the windy wet conditions that night to join in the frivolities. Still you will be able to check out the photos on the board in the Club Dining Room and I am sure lots of you will be keen to join Deirdre at the next theme event which she plans for early November. See you there. A Massey

OPINION: Requiem for the playtime... by Ian McKissack I have always been fond of the title of a book by Peter Matthiessen: ‘At Play in the Fields of the Lord’. It is incidentally a very good book. The focus is a small tribe of Amazonian Indians and some missionaries. But the title always sticks in my mind as a description how simple and gentle life was for early peoples. There is touch of idealization in my thinking as there was frequent strife between villages or tribes over little things like stealing women, and retribution followed. Today we have left the fields of the lord well behind and reached either new heights of human endeavor or madness, depending on your point of view. Surrounded by labour saving devices and fast modes of transport many people find that there are not enough hours in the day to get everything done. The best way to relax from the hurry and scurry is to get high, one way or another. But above all we have become consumers and from childhood learn the importance of possessing. The better your possessions the higher your status. Just in case you did not learn the rules properly there is a bombardment of advertisements to remind

you of the vast range of possessions that you should be hunting down. Advertisers are like the snake oil salesmen at county fairs, hyping up the attributes of their wares so that you begin to salivate with longing. And there are the cunning little inducements to get you buying. ‘Rush in now’ really means don’t stop and think whether you really need or can afford the bauble. Another is ‘special offer must end Monday’. There is absolutely no reason why sale must end Monday except they say so, it is an invitation to mindless urgency in purchasing. You might hope that we will come to our senses but there is little hope of that because modern economies now depend on this high level of consumerism to keep business going and to sustain a high level of employment. Governments can only keep their coffers full by encouraging us to consume conscientiously and pay our taxes willingly.
