RAGS2RIC HES, IN C.
• Who we are: We are a fashion & design house empowering community artisans. We make things that matter and weave joy into every story. In a world where fashion and design are often seen as excess, R2R is proof that style and sustainability coexist. • What we do: We partner with local artisans across the Philippines to create eco-ethical fashion and home accessories out of up cycled, overstock cloth & indigenous fabric. • And most importantly, WHY we are doing it: We don’t just love seeing transformation, we love being a big part of it! R2R is a life and livelihood partner for empowered and dignified artisans as they strive to weave better futures for their families and communities. • And another big WHY: You! Your decision to surround yourself with things that matter inspire us every day! We thought you should know. Thank you for weaving joyful stories with us!
HOW DID WE GET HERE? Rags2Riches (R2R) began in Payatas, one of the biggest urban poor communities in the Philippines, back in 2007. Our co-founders (9 people from different industries and backgrounds) met a group of talented & passionate artisans (mostly women) from Payatas who were making woven rugs out of scrap fabric. While these artisans were hardworking, enterprising, and joyful, they were between a long chain of middlemen who pass on the raw materials they use as well as the finished products they make, without necessarily adding value to the chain. Because of this long chain of unfair trade, the artisans were only getting Php12-16 per day (about 30 cents in USD), which is far from enough for even a decent meal. The cofounders and artisans decided to do something about this. They started working together and built not just a business partnership, but lasting friendship. And R2R was born. We got our first break a few months after we were founded, when we partnered with one of the top fashion designers in the Philippines, Rajo Laurel. He re-imagined our woven panels into amazing fashion accessories. Through his creative vision, our artisans also re-imagined their craft into wearable & functional art pieces (fashion & home accessories). This collaboration started many more with some of the most amazing, passionate, and compassionate designers in the country - bag designer Amina Aranaz-Alunan, couturier Oliver Tolentino, and contemporary artist Olivia d’Aboville. And today, we are in partnership with artisan communities from all over Metro Manila (beyond Payatas) and we also work with other social enterprises and indigenous communities around the Philippines. We always look back to our history with so much joy and gratitude! Our family has gotten o much bigger (with our team, artisans & advocates) now but our spirit and major WHY remains the same. We are so excited to continue this journey because we believe that when we really put our heads and hearts together and create things that matter, we can weave joy into every story.

Olivia d’Aboville is a French-Filipino artist who graduated with honors from Duperre, a prestigious Textile Design school in Paris in 2009. She specialized in tapestry and textile structures and adapted the techniques to create her own woven forms. She has been exploring sculpting with textile technique since then and had her first solo exhibition: Chasm of Fantasies at the Ayala Museum in 2010. She was nominated and short-listed for the Ateneo Art Awards 2011: Anatomy of Autonomy In 2012, Olivia d’Aboville collaborated with R2R to launch a chic Home Collection dubbed “Merienda”. The collection was inspired by Filipino desserts - sparked by comments of the artisans on the likeness of the pouf to puto, a local rice cake. Thus, Olivia named each piece after a popular Filipino dessert whose colors also inspired the collection — the purple use, leech flan beige, the sapin-sapin bright magenta and the gray suman.

Dimensions: Small - 18” x 18” Large - 20” x 20” Wholesale Prices: Small: US$25.00 Large: US$29.00 *T’nalak is a traditional cloth woven by the T’boli women of Lake Sebu in South Cotabato, Mindanao. These women continue this tedious and age-old practice involving the ikat method using natural dyes and threads from plant fibers that are indigenous to the Philippines. The T’boli women weave without the use of drawn patterns, but instead rely on mental images for their designs. The T’nalak weavers, also known as the “Dreamweavers”, believe that the textile patterns are bestowed on them through dreams either on their own, from their ancestors, or through Fu Dalu, the spirit of the abaca.

Dimensions: 18” x 18” Wholesale Price: US$20.00 *Binakol is a textile pattern handwoven on a small-scale in Ilocos, a northern region in the Philippines. Also known as binakel, binakael, or binakul (meaning “twill” in the local dialect) is a variation of the abel. Binakol was popular by the end of the 19th century; today, however, its weaving is considered a dwindling industry due to the non-availability of local cotton and its price disadvantage compared to factorywoven alternatives. Binakol can be easily recognized by its uniform, interlocked geometric patterns that result in psychedelic optical art designs, which are said to represent the waves of the sea and, among indigenous peoples of the Cordilleras, protection against malevolent spirits.
