What inspired you to start your own blog? It was actually a little bit of an accident. I’ve loved fashion since I can remember, but for a long time I was just an observer. I was passive in the Fashion World. But then I entered a contest for carnival styling on the internet and ended up winning, so that’s what led me to start up my own blog. Describe your style in three words? Boho, Hippie, Vintage. Were there any influences early on that made you love fashion so much? Not really, I’ve just always loved original, unique clothing, and wanted to express this, so I decided to do it through my blog. Who are your favorite designers? I like “minimalistic” designers like Helmut Lang and Philip Lim. Your pictures are beautiful, who takes them? Thanks!! My mum is my photographer, she is the best photographer ever! Does fashion blogging bring you a lot of career opportunities within the fashion scene? Yeah! Fashion blogging brings me so many opportunities such as fashion trips overseas, interviews for Magazines, collaborations with brands and invitations to Fashion Week shows etc.

9

What has been a main highlight throughout your blogging experience? My trip to Los Angeles for a Billabong Contest!!! I, along with some other fashion bloggers, were asked to design an outfit for Billabong clothing, and I won! I got flown to Los Angelas to take part in “Design for Humanity” event. It was such an amazing experience, and a dream that came true through blogging! Whats your number one beauty tip? I’m a cat trapped in a human body, therefore I love to wear black eyeliner. Cat eyes are definitely my favorite make-up technique! What items in your wardrobe could you not live without? Skinny jeans, shirts, oversized sweaters and my converse sneakers. What are your favorite blogs to read? I have two fav fashion blogs - Fashion Toast by Rumi Neely, and Alicepoint - an amazing Polish girl! What tips would you give new bloggers to help them start out on the path to success? Just be yourself! Blogging should be for yourself and your biggest passion, only then will it makes sense!

When and why did you start up your own fashion blog? I started my first one during summer 2010. Why? Because I love clothes and fashion and needed somewhere to express it. How would you describe your style in 3 words? Haha I couldn’t come up with something myself so I let a friend do it and here’s her answer: Different, Rock, Cool. Do you have any artists, musicians, or otherwise that you return to time and again for fashion inspiration? I used to have Lady Gaga, but not anymore (still love her tho). Now I just kind of get inspired by people. I like to snap up the small things you know. What season inspires you most? Autumn! It’s not to cold nor not to hot. You can dress in shorts, skirts, jeans, jackets, just EVERYTHING without freezing your ass off, or sweating like hell. What else do you do aside from blogging? I work out a lot, go to school, hang out with friends, party. Just all the normal stuff teenagers do. Approximately ow much time do you spend on work related to your blog each week? I don’t know, depends from week to week. But around 10 hours.

ow much time do you spend on work related to your What are your favorite stores to shop at right now? H&M, and a swedish store named ‘Ginatricot’. But lately I’ve been shopping a lot on ebay. It’s the best! What is your favorite fashion trend at the moment? I’m not that into trends. I just dress up in what ever I like. But I like the “tumblr-style”, you know: look like you’re from the street, ad some ‘swag’ and some class to that and then you have tumblr-style, haha! Whats the best thing about fashion blogging? It would have to be all the amazing responses I get from other people! What item in your closet can you not live without? My black leather jacket. For real. What are your favorite blogs to read? Djamila.se - a Swedish girl with an awesome style. Tofauti.se - also a Swedish girl with awesome style. Handfuloffashion.blogspot.com - and English girl with the true tumblr-style. But they are all very unique! Finally, what tips would you give new bloggers to help them start out on the path to success? I wouldn’t say I succeed, but just be yourself, and don’t follow the trends too much, that’s just boring. And I recon you need to have alot of pictures!

What made you want to start up your own blog? About a year and a half ago, I was pretty hooked on Chictopia for getting fashion inspiration and I started contributing and posting my own outfit looks. As I started posting more regularly, more people asked me to start a blog and they wanted to see more pictures. Not long after, I got a style icon status in Chictopia so that pushed me to get a blog all setup and thought it would be a good place to store all my pictures and random rants on my daily life. How would you define your style in 3 words? Evolving (I find that I like changing things up and trying something fresh each time), Adaptive (Always important to dress according to the atmosphere and surroundings), and Striking (I love working with colours and pulling off an outfit that has a striking character. It doesn’t always have to be bright colours, as long as the colours compliment each other). Have you always been interested in fashion? Ever since I was little! My mom told me that when I was young, I was all about wearing pretty dresses all the time or I would throw tantrums if she dressed me up instead or make me wear boy pants! Where do you find inspiration for your outfits? I don’t think it’s one particular source, but I love noticing interesting street wear and I’m always on other blogs or Lookbook.nu during my free time.

17

How much time do you spend on work related to your blog each week? Quite a bit to be honest, and hard to put a number on it. I work full time so I spend most of my week nights attending to emails and putting up blog posts, while the weekends I take outfit look photos if the weather permits. Occasionally fashion related events are held on the weekends so I would be busy attending them as well. What do you do when you are not blogging? I am a bit of a couch potato. I love lazing around and catching up with the latest shows on TV, watching my favourite YouTube channels or catching a good movie at the cinema. What has been a highlight of your blogging experience? Definitely the people and friends I’ve made. Both the local and online fashion community has been a blast to get to know and I’ve met up with so them in person and it’s great to get to meet new people who you have lots in common with.

What’s your view on the ‘Ombre’ trend? I love it because everyone can apply the trend but with their own twist and colours to it. Not a trend where everyone’s hair looks similar. What item in your closet can you not live without? I don’t keep my shoes in my closet, but it would definitely be them! Can not live without heels and can never have enough of them. Lastly, what advice would you give someone wanting to start up their own blog? I would advise them to just do it already, don’t worry too much about audience and readership, but focus your efforts on your content and putting up something your proud of. Over time you can work on other things like the design and other improvements, but as long as you’ve got the content that more people than you think are interested in, your all set!

What are your favorite online stores you shop at? Nastygal, ASOS, MarketHQ are my favourite online stores as their in tune with my style and I can always find something there for me. Does fashion blogging bring you a lot of career opportunities within the fashion scene? I guess it does give you some exposure to the fashion scene and the opportunities are really what you make of it. If you spend the time and effort on your blog, and your truly passionate about it, there are tons of opportunities that awaits you! And I believe that doesn’t apply just for fashion and blogging.

4. Jo Fletcher 23, new zealand What made you want to start up your own blog? I had always spent lots of time reading other blogs, and decided it was time to start one of my own! My boyfriend, Barnaby, was so (so so so!) encouraging, and luckily he happens to be a photographer too!

What do you do when you are not blogging? I sell vintage clothing online, and I’m also coming up with my very first Lost in the Haze clothing collection in the next few months - I can’t wait! So be sure to keep an eye out!

Have you always loved fashion? Yes, always! When I was eleven years old (in the mid-nineties) I had a pair of camel print harem pants.I thought they were absolutely incredible! Nothing much has changed - I still have a huge love for quirky pieces. Nowadays I find myself getting excited over cat skirts and sailor dresses - though if I spotted more camel print I probably wouldn’t say no!

So you are from Christchurch, did the earthquakes effect your blog in any way? They made a massive impact! Barnaby and I started our blog about a week before the big February quake. The earthquakes shaped what happened to the blog - as we had barely any access to any urban environments.

Describe your style in three words? Whimsical, colourful, playful! Whats the best thing about fashion blogging? Getting to do something that you love every day!

21

What are your favorite items in your closet right now? I literally just thrifted a button up dress with a massive sailor collar. I’ve been wearing it pretty much every single day this week, it was love at first sight! I’ve also just recently bought a pair of tights that I’ve been wearing nonstop. They have grumpy cat faces on the knees - so cute!

What seasons inspire you most? Mustard yellow is my favourite colour, so I love any excuse to wear it more often - so of course I love Autumn! Spring is a favourite too, as I love being able to wear wicker bowler hats and playsuits again because of the sunshine. Where do you look to for outfit inspiration? I’m really influenced by other fashion blogs and also the 1960s! I love creating looks based on fairy tales or old stories. It’s so fun to wear something a little bit out of the ordinary - plus, who doesn’t love dressing up! What are your favorite stores to shop at? I mostly just shop at vintage stores, or online! I especially love Modcloth, ASOS, and Vivetta! If you could teleport to another decade, when would you pick and why? The 1960s for sure. I’m all about big hair and short hemlines - so it is a real influence! What advice can offer someone wanting to start up their own blog? Just go for it! It’s easy once you start blogging - and you can just keep moving forward from there!

22

5. What inspired you to want to start your own fashion blog? I followed a lot of other fashion blogs a few years ago and one day I decided to start my own and just see how it would go. Describe your style in 3 words? Electic. Dark. Personal. Whats the best thing about fashion blogging? The best thing about fashion blogging is definitely meeting such inspiring people. I’ve come in contact with some really amazing individuals and I hope to meet each and every one of them one day.

Shevahh Vahdatpour 22, USA

How much time do you spend on work related to your blog each week? No one has ever asked me this before and I’ve never really thought about it. I think the average is about ten to fifteen hours per week on work related to my blog only.Other than that I spend a lot of time on my vintage shop. What do you do when you are not blogging? I’m a full time art student at the University of Central Florida. So, I have to really manage my time wisely between blogging, my business, and my classes.

25

Have you always been interested in fashion? Yes and no. I’ve always been interested in “street style” but not high fashion. I was a gymnast for the majority of my childhood and early teen years so I was very much preoccupied with that. My interest in fashion has really turned into an obsession in the past five years. Did you ever imagine your blog would become this successful? Not at all. When I began I just wanted to share my looks with other people and to use my blog as a way to express myself. Do you have any artists, musicians, or otherwise that you return to time and again for inspiration? I’m really fascinated by nostalgia, so, I listen to a lot of old soul music. A lot of music from the 50’s and 60’s really sparks my creativity. I also love old movies. I actually just really like most anything old. What is your favorite item in your closet right now? My vintage leather motorcycle jacket, because it is perfect in so many ways. What are your favorite blogs to read? My favorites are Jean Greige, The Siren of Mod, Clothed Chameleon, BraveGrrl, Iflyastarship, and many others. If you had to teleport to a different decade when would you pick and why? I think I would pick the 90’s. I grew up during the 90’s and from what I remember it was pretty awesome. It’d be nice to see how it would be as an adult. Is there a piece of advice that could give someone wanting to start up their own fashion blog? I think anyone starting up their own fashion blog should remember to use their own voice. Try to always share your own point of view and your own opinion before anyone else’s because there is nothing more refreshing than an orignal blog and there is nothing more original than the way we each think. 26

What inspired you to start your own blog? I started my first blog around five years ago and it was just about writing. I always had a huge interest for writing, if it was a poem, story or article. But I developed my interest for fashion more and more, and I think it was around four years ago I started up my first fashion blog. There was nothing more than my interest that inspired me to start a blogg, and it’s just around this year I have started to read other fashion blogs! Describe your style in three words? Romantic, rock’n’roll, mixed! Have you always been interested in fashion? I have always been interested in having a personal style and clothing that represented my, but I can’t say I have always been a fashion girl. Do you have any artists, musicians, or otherwise that you return to time and again for inspiration? I’m really inspired by music because it has always been such a big part of my life. I find inspiration in the songs, lyrics but also in music videos, and from the artist itself. A band that has inspired me since I was 11 years old is Evanescence. The lead singer Amy Lee has such a unique fashion style! I have also been very into Lady Gaga and Marilyn Mansons art for some years! Whats the best thing about fashion blogging? All the people you met in the cyber world! I have met some golden people, the kindest fashionaddicts ever. And also inspiring other people with my own style, and hearing all their comments, they makes me so happy. I could only ever say positive things about blogging.

29

How much time do you spend on work related to your blog each week? It’s so different! It depends on how much I’ve got to do for school, but I’m trying my best to do constant updates regularly. But I could probably say around 2h/per day! What else do you do aside from blogging? Right now I just started studying fashion at Lunds Univeristy! It’s so fun and interesting, and I dedicate most of my time to it right now. If you could teleport to another decade, when would you pick and why? This is so hard. I would love to see so many decades! First of all, I would love to live and breathe druing 1850’s. I’m loving how the fashion developed and how the dresses looked. I would also want to live during the 1920’s in Paris. The music, art, authors and be around with designers such as Coco Chanel! I also always been dreaming about 1980’s because of the music! Imagine living during the 80’s with all the cool rockbands as Skid Row and Bon Jovi, going to concerts and when fashion was at its craziest! What shops do you like to shop at the most? I’m an online shopper mostly, so I go for websites like Oasap, Romwe and ASOS. But my favorite site is nelly. com. I also love to shop at H&M and Gina Tricot, that is if I’m not online shopping! What item in your wardrobe can you not live without? I got to say, my Jeffrey Campbell Lita’s! The most comfy high heels I’ve ever had, and they are one of the best looking shoes in the world. What are your favorite blogs to read? I just have one favorite blog, it’s Annawii.blogg.se She is so romantic and boho chic! I’m trying to find some more fashionblogs at the moment. But sometimes I read swedish blogs such as Angelica Blick and Kenza aswell. What tips would you give new bloggers to help them start out on the path to success? Well first of all, you need to show your readers what kind of blog you are. Try to stick to one thing, like fashion or baking. You can mix abit, but not to much! I also prefer blogs with lots of pictures, take pictures sweethearts! So many people are not reading the text, they’re just looking at your pictures so a good start would be a camera. And at last, try to get your personallity in your blogdesign. Show off who you are! 30

Where does the name ‘Toks’ come from? Toks is kind of nickname my parents started calling me when I was small. Actually it wasn’t exactly that, but a similar name, and when I was growing older the name changed with me, so it finished up as Toks and now my parents, my closest friends and my boyfriend call me that. What made you want to start your own blog? I’ve always loved clothes and combining outfits, fashion in general and the idea of starting a blog had been in my head for a while. I used to do some modeling work and the photographers and stylists encouraged me to go ahead and start, so I did. How would you define your style in 3 words? Chic, Lady, Rock. Whats the best thing about fashion blogging? The best thing about fashion blogging is that it gives you a great opportunity to share your styles and combination ideas and receive opinions from a wide range of people. How much time do you spend approximately on work related to your blog each week? A lot! I couldn’t really calculate the hours. To keep a blog up to date requires a lot of time.

Where do you look to find the inspiration for your outfits? I generally watch the fashion shows, and then there are the fashion magazines and of course street style blogs. Usually though, when I’m shopping and see an item I like, combinations start popping into my head What else do you do aside from blogging? I’m still studying but I combine my studies and my blog with my job. And obviously I love spending time with my boyfriend and my friends. And now that I’ve just moved to Munich I’m trying to discover new cool spots and places to shop. What is your biggest challenge about fashion blogging? I think the biggest challenge is getting recognized. Just getting people interested in your blog is quite hard. Do you have a favorite fashion trend this season? I don’t really have a favourite trend. Right now I’m very into camo prints and military and biker style, but I also love studs, sequins and glitter. What are your favorite online stores to shop at? Topshop (as there’s not a store here in Munich), Motel rocks, In Love With fashion, Sheinside, Queen’s Wardrobe, OASAP, and Storets. What is your favorite items in your closet right now and why? Wow! That’s a tricky question… Maybe my new pair of baroque jeans, my leather shorts or my camo shirt…And my new biker boots! Do you have any advice you would give to someone wanting to start up their own blog? You should be consistent with the posts. You should start a blog for yourself, because you want to share your opinions and likes and the most important thing would be, always be yourself!

What inspired you to start your own blog? I wanted to try out the hole thing, and wanted to share a part of my life with others. A joy that’s shared is a joy made double, they say! Describe your style in three words? Playfull, mixed and unexpected. Where do you look to find inspiration for your outfits? First of all: I try to use all the items in my warderobe, and try to use them in a different ways. But I find a lot of my inspiration from other blogs, lookbooks and on the street. Cecilie Slemming When and why did you start blogging? I started blogging about a year ago, and I started my fashion blog because I wanted to inspire people and share my thoughts, my style and my wishes with other people. How would you describe your style? I would describe my style as a lot of things combined - minimal, raw, simple, black / white, feminine, classic, sporty, different and sometimes retro. Do you have any style icons? Yes, I think it must be Mary-Kate Olsen. I have always looked up to her since I was a little girl and I still do. When I was younger I saw all the Olsen twins movies and I was always inspired. I like her style and her way to combining outfits. How much time do you spend on work related to your blog each week? I spend about two hours on average every weekday. Sometimes I spend more time, and other times I spend less. What do you do when you are not blogging? When I not blogging I go to school, doing my homework and spend time with my family and friends. 41

Whats the best thing about fashion blogging? The best thing about fashion blogging is the way I get recognition every day of my work witch I enjoy. When I got these comments, I get more motivated to blogging. What is the biggest challenge about fashion blogging? The biggest challenge to me would be, getting new ideas for posts. I have to get new inspiration about fashion, and this can be difficult to find time when im busy with school work. What is your favorite fashion trend at the moment? At the moment my favorite fashion trend is to combine the raw and the sporty with the feminine. What shops do you like to shop at the most? I almost shop in Weekday, H&M, Acne, Alexander Wang, Birger Christensen, Cos, Wood Wood and Won Hundred. But I also shop on the internet sometimes on Net-A-Porter and Shopbop. What are your favorite items in your closet right now? Right now is it my new tee from ‘T’ by Alexander Wang. Alexander Wang makes the absolute best basic clothes, if you ask me. Whats the best advice you can offer someone wanting to start their own fashion blog? The best advice I can offer someone wanting to start their own blog, is to be a personal blogger and show your own experiences, opinions whilst adding your own individual touch of fashion.

Laura Allard-Fleischl 21, new zealand

When did you first start blogging? Just before I started uni, so about 4 or 5 years ago, I can’t actually remember, the past few years have been a blur haha How did the name Pony Hunter come about? It’s a long, boring story, I think I’ll keep people guessing, I’m sure anything they come up with will be more interesting than the truth. What were your original plans for your blog and why did you start blogging? I had no plans to be fair, I just had too much time on my hands and decided to give it a go, more for a laugh than anything else, I certainly never expected anyone to read it! What were the influences early on that made you love fashion so? I’m not sure, I’ve always loved dressing up so that could have something to do with it, my mother is extremely stylish and an amazing seamstress, she used to make all my clothes when I was younger and I’ve recently learned that my great grandmother was also pretty nifty with a sewing machine and sent my grandma away to university with a suitcase of the most stunning evening gowns.. this was during the war and depression when everyone else dressed rather conservatively.. so I suppose you could say it’s hereditary. What is the biggest challenge about your fashion blogging? Finding the time and effort to keep at it. Also finding a way to keep it true to myself, it’s too easy to misinterpret things over the web, particularly with regard to fashion blogs, I feel like some people take them too seriously, I’m always terrified that everyone who reads mine sees me as apretentious wank, it is a pretty wanky pastime.

45

Does fashion blogging bring you a lot of career opportunities within the fashion scene? I suppose so in some ways, I personally prefer to separate my career from my blog as much as possible, just because that’s not how I want to be seen, as a fashion blogger, I’d rather make my name for being talented at what I do, then having a bunch of pictures of myself wearing clothes on the internet. However that’s just me, there are fashion bloggers out there who write amazing pieces on very relevant topics, Patty Huntington for example, and similar bloggers, they really deserve to do well and I’m sure that’s enhanced by their blogging. What is your favorite thing about blogging? When I get offered deals on clothing, that’s always great as I don’t really make enough to splurge on shopping sprees at the moment. How much time do you spend on work related to your blog(s) each week? Maybe an hour or two every fortnight or so? It’s currently dwindling, but I’ll hopefully boost it back up again asap. What else do you do aside from blogging? I work full time at Red11 and spend the rest of my days working as a photographer, that’s my real passion. In the little spare time I find I like to search for amazing hidden cafes, markets and restaurants around Auckland, then make my boyfriend try them out with me, go for sushi dates with Rosie and Gina, watch friends play gigs, spend time with as many people as possible in the evenings and enjoy being in bed. Finally, what tips would you give new bloggers to help them start out on a path to success? Don’t take yourself too seriously. Do it because it’s something you would enjoy, not because you think people will have any interest in what you have to say. It sounds cynical, but I just believe that there are so many ways to get noticed in this world, bloggers will always have a certain stigma associated with them, and it’s not usually the most flattering. So get out there, have fun with it, but continue pursuing your passsion outside the blogosphere.
