I’M RAHIM.

ABOUT ME.

For me, design never feels like work, rather an experience. I design primarly with graphics in mind, as I see this as a portal to engage with people. Designing with empathy is a key focus as it allows me to place myself in the user’s shoes, helping me to later mould my design thoughts.

“What will the kiosk of the future in Nike stores look like?

To design an intuitive, user-friendly, kiosk for Nike stores, which will relieve consumers of the current frustrations of shopping in-store. The Kiosk will be accompanied by an application, with the goal being to reshape how we shop.

4

HIGHLIGHTING THE PROBLEM Previous findings have highlighted how consumers require shorting waiting times, instant access to information on products and the ability to shop on their own. A culmination of interviews and store observations highlighted this view. A target user of 16 - 25 was also observed. Further findings were documented all with-in the dissertation “Kiosks for Nike Stores?”.

EXPLORING DIFFERENT DESIGNS. As the kiosk was to be created for the Nike shoe store of the future, a strong emphasis was held on Nike branding. The use of the infamous “Nike Tick” was heavily focused on, with it being used to cut the kiosk shape. This was to instantly allow consumers to subconsciously recognise the Nike kiosk.

UNDERSTANDING PROPORTIONS. To help understand how the kiosk would work in 1:1 scale, initially tape drawings were used, with the aim being to mark out where all components would fall. As the Airstation kiosk would make use of a mechanism which would deliver the product to the consumer, a 1:1 mechanical model showing the delivery mechanism was created. An scaled down aesthetic model of the kiosk was also created.

THE AIRSTATION KIOSK. The Airstation Kiosk looks to relieve consumers of the current frustrations of shopping by delivering the product straight to them. An integrated deliver mechanism allows them to order products on the kiosk to which it is then delivered straight to them. A User Interface also allows the consumers to access information. The Kiosk also pairs with the Airstation app creating an eco-system aimed to make the whole shopping experience better.

WIREFRAMING. To create the Airstation App initial wireframing was conducted. Quick ideas and concepts were delivered straight onto the paper with a focus simple and minimal user interaction. These concepts were then shown the target age group for feedback.

THE AIRSTATION APP

Accompanying the Airstation Kiosk is the Airstation App. Dedicated user profiles based on past taste and current interests allow the application to recommend new shoes to the consumer. Alongside a new shopping UI, consumers can shop for products which they can then later pick up at the Airstation Kiosk through booking. A working application has been developed for the Airstation App.

HOW WILL THE AIRSTATION ECOSYSTEM WORK? Ultimately the Airstation Eco-system looks to bring the best of online shopping (through the App) but merge it with the ability to touch and feel products before purchasing.

PROBLEM / USER HOW AIR POLLUTION IS AFFECTING PEOPLE WHO SUFFER FROM ASTHMA? Air pollution affects asthma suffers in a variety of ways from, pollutants that trigger their symptoms to particles that block their airways, with also many reporting that it gets in the way of their work. Many of users reported they don’t feel comfortable using their inhalers in public as they feel it draws too much attention and also doesn’t look very good. Furthermore, they find them awkward to hold and use. Hence the goal is to design an inhaler that is discreate and is instinctive for consumers to use and hold.

DESIGNING FOR FORM.

A variety of initial sketches were completed for breathe. with a wide source of inspiration being utilised, including fruit shapes, toothbrush handles and drill handles. Once an initial concept was picked it was then later developed with an emphasis on the sketching to portray how the user would hold it in their hands.

EXPERIMENTATION. HOW WE HOLD PRODUCTS? To identify and understand how we as users hold items, initial blue foam models were created. These was then used in an experiment to conclude which form consumers felt comfortable holding and putting next to their mouth. Furthermore, button experimentation was conducted to understand where the consumer’s thumb naturally sat.

“Translating digital design into physical form.”

To identify a digital company which is yet to establish a physical brand language and design a product which they can sell. The ‘product’ should encapsulate their brand language with a focus on the physical form being highlighted. Create a hi-fidelity visual prototype of the design.

23

23

IDENTIFYING A COMPANY.

In today’s market, companies such as Amazon, Google and Apple all having their own dedicated streaming hubs. Hence, I have chosen NETFLIX as my digital company, as they currently are a digital specific based platform. Therefore, I have decided to create a dedicated media hub/ remote for NETFLIX to sell. A focus will be placed on the physical form of the design, with the initial goal to translate NETFLIX’s brand language into a physical state.

FINDING THE RIGHT DESIGN.

To help identify a design style for the Media Hub and Remote a wide range of initial sketches were done. Select few initial concepts were then taken and developed through perspective sketches to help refine the form. The final designs for the media box and remote are highlighted in red.
