My name is Rahma, I am an ITS student who graduated in September 2023 who lives in Surabaya. Through this portfolio, I want to tell you about the architecture that I have been through. The explorations carried out varied, ranging from cultural contexts, structures, functions, and even utopia. I am very grateful to the partners who accompanied me on my journey, without them this work would not have been possible. quadrilateral area that shows the synergistic phenomenon between the existence of original villages. This phenomenon is part identity of the city which is formed based on the interinteractions of the people in it.

Kebangsren Village | 2022

Kebangsren Village is one of the existing village located in Tunjungan. This village has the origin culture of Tunjungan or Surabaya that have to be survived. Several years back, numerous skyscrapers have been built around this area. It also brings west cultures that could shift the value of the origin culture. This Village also doesnt have a decent life, a lot of problem face them. Their children neither have a playing area nor safety for them. So, to keep their value of origin culture, they need public space for them to do their activity in well.

The site is in the historical and commercial area of Surabaya, Indonesia. Spesifically, it is in Tunjungan district. This place has had numerous valuable moments in the past. In 1945, this place become one of the historical places that became a key role in Indonesia’s independence. A lot of national heroes had also lived around this area. Also, Historical buildings still exist in this place. They always become the face of Surabaya.

The Concept

1. Using the typology of existing buildings in Tunjungan

2. Providing a new space for traders and villagers to interact with visitors

3. Adapting the concept of ephemeral structure to recreate the quality of the space so that it can transform according to the needs of the community

4. Adapting the concept of sunken public space to create a new atmosphere and more quite space

activity. Susuh angin is designed as a pavilion type building at spot with the surrounding landscape as a camouflage for not interfering between cover and exposure of a shelter that blends with nature.

ISSUE

The site is located in Nansha Bird Park, Nansha District, Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, China. It is a man-made wetland park where 141 known species of migrant birds visit the wetlands every year. In addition, it is also known as a tourism spot where people come to escape their busy life in the city and spend some quite time to be blended with nature.

ACTIVITIES

Visitors usually enjoy the park by sitting and relaxing while watching the birds fly around. The activities that took place in the park then become our inspiration to design a shelter related to birds. It will be a half-pavilion covering the people below it and exposing the view of the park in the same time. As for the concept, the form of the pavilion is taken from the metaphor of bird’s nest that will become a nest both for humans and birds.

DESIGN PURPOSE

The purpose of design is to let human becomes part of the nature. It will allow visitors to engage in bird-watching activi ties in camouflage within the pavilion. The pavilion is supposed to blend in with its surroundings, be hidden, and serene.

Interwoven bamboo laths as structure element and woven bamboo strips as cover shade.

Cut form to expose structural random complexity and provide entrance.

Random gaps between bamboo laths to minimize wind load and maximize air circulation.

Semi circular shape and random openings to provide view and interaction to all directions.

Half nest as shelter for shading and rain protection. The nest concept with porous pavilion’s envelope allows a little sunlight and rain to still penetrate so that people inside can still feel the sensation of being part of nature.

This design is a speculated design to the future according to the principle of No-Stop City. No-Stop City makes a building where the technology is not yet existed in the era, mentioned the technology is microclimate that can manipulate the weather inside building. A similar approach was taken in this design with the help of generative AI for speculate about future technology. Based on prompt “toward which technology to make a residential building in the future”, 3D printing technology will become a structural system in the future and will be used in this design. Future buildings will be able to manufacture himself with a self-printing building system. System This will help reduce the environmental impact incurred in the construction process.

The shape of the hill will represent an immoral building, but it also represents a building in the future where natural shapes will be able to be produced by 3D printing (Figure 12). In addition, the hill geometry is also solid so that it is easy to produce using a 3D printing machine in the future. The shape of the hill also blends in with the site’s green environment and could become a new habitat for birds and vines when in the future the water level will rise.

The chosen typology is a boutique hotel because of the design focus on future experiences and the uniqueness of forms that blend with nature. For room specifications, the generative AI tends to lead to a calming room. These spaces support several relaxation activities such as meditation and yoga rooms, spa rooms, outdoor gardens, shaded indoor gardens, and spaces with natural views. The hotel units are made modular with a natural experience that is free to be in the sky, lots of glass that does not limit views
